PRESIDENT Dear Members, As we enter the midst of our “Winter” season at San Jose Country Club, the weather is certainly reminding us how much we enjoy Spring! Yet, January was a lively event month, from the Lion’s Plunge to The Mentalist dinner to a Mommy-and-Me Workshop and more. The event schedule continues to be robust and diverse, offering something for everyone. Check out our newsletters, emails or Facebook posts for upcoming activities. We are honored to congratulate our Teaching Professional Stephanie Connelly-Eiswerth for earning the 2023 Women’s PGA Professional Player of the Year! If you need to sharpen your golf game, book a lesson or two with a great trainer, located right here at San Jose. After finally securing permits from the City of Jacksonville, renovations for our tennis and fitness facility started on January 8 with ShayCore (our general contractor). We will provide updates, along with progress photos. However, members are prohibited from entering the building because it’s an active construction site. Working with a third-party industry consultant, member interviews and surveys are underway to develop a formal strategic plan. Please participate if you receive an invitation for feedback as your insight will help establish a go-forward approach for San Jose for years to come. We anticipate having our blueprint to share during the second quarter. Our Annual All Member Meeting will be Wednesday, February 7 at 6:00 p.m. I look forward to recapping 2023 achievements and announcing our goals for 2024. If you can’t attend in-person, a virtual option will be available. Throughout 2024, we will provide an operational dashboard. As shown below, this data will showcase how the Club is being utilized. Remember, the well-being and longevity of San Jose Country Club is dependent on existing member involvement and attracting new members. ALL MEMBER MEETING Per Article VI, Section 6.1 of the Club’s By-Laws, the San Jose Country Club Board of Governors will host an Annual Meeting of the Members on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at 6:00 pm. With an extraordinary 2023 for our industry, it is imperative that we look back on what we have learned and stay present to what we are still learning so that we can continue to move forward. It has been a wet and cold start to 2024, but we are certain that it will turn the corner soon. With San Jose Country Club continuing high volume of play, course care and adhering to the club’s bylaws are extremely important. Please be aware when you are playing to continue to fix ball marks, fill divots, and rake bunkers. When walking on the green please be courteous to players behind you and pick up your feet. When taking your ball out of the hole please use care to not damage the cup edges, remove the flag stick or use your hand without a glove on. Making tee times and checking in is a part of our club’s bylaws, please do not access the golf course without making a tee time or checking with the golf shop to make sure the tee is open for play. Thank you for being a member of San Jose Country Club, we are looking forward to a great 2024! New apparel is out in the golf shop with our new launch of the San Jose vintage golf logo, and it looks great! Some have asked, where does this logo come from or what is the significance of the logo. Next time you walk in the main entrance of our building, look up. This logo has been around for quite some time, and we have implemented it in our merchandise operation to give us an alternative member logo. We hope you like it! If you’re looking to get started in this great game or looking to enhance your skills, our ladies 36 program is back in action starting at the end of February. On March 22nd, Hayes Farley and Joshe Wolfe will be conducting a Titleist Vokey fitting day and clinic. More information will be available starting mid-February, if you’re in need of a new wedge and want to improve your playing ability around the green you won’t want to miss this!

Dear San Jose Members, I wanted to address the issue of Poa Annua that we have on the golf course. I have spoken with other superintendents in the area, and it seems that we are not alone in our search for control. Unfortunately, the available solutions can cause damage to the Bermudagrass, which is why we have not gone that route. My goal, given the El Nino winter we are facing, has been to reduce as much damage to our turfgrass as possible. You may have noticed the large patches on our fairways. That is Large Patch, and the weather we have experienced is the perfect environment for it to thrive. However, it will recover once the weather is more conducive for bermudagrass to grow. TENNIS NEWS AND EVENTS MEN’S SUPER MONDAY’S There may not be football on the tube for the guys, but we guarantee some great tennis, good food, and ice-cold beverages. Dorian will host “Pizza Night” on February 5th. Reservations are a must for Super Mondays and should be made before 2:00pm on the day of the event by signing up on TennisScores.

2024 JUNIOR CLINICS Calling all parents, February is a great time to sign your son or daughter up for our junior clinics. We develop junior players through a clearly defined training structure and competitive pathway while maintaining a fun environment. Daily practices will include technical progressions as well as rallying and point play. The Junior spring party will be held on March 1st the summer party May 17th.
JUNIOR TEAM TENNIS The junior Friday afternoon USTA league will begin this month. Please contact Dorian at dorian.porada@sjccjax.com if you have a Junior in green dot or yellow ball that would like to participate on a team.
ADULT CLINICS The USTA season and Spring tournaments are just getting started. The SJCC staff of USPTA and PTR professionals will work hard to get you into great playing shape with fast paced and hard-hitting team drills. We have clinics for men and women at every level. Space is limited in all our clinics. Players may sign up at TennisScores or contact Marie or Dorian.

FITNESS & AQUATICS NEWS AND EVENTS Our new year is off and running and we’re officially about a month into the renovation of the Fitness and Tennis Center! The demolition of the inside has been completed and you can begin to see some of the new areas being constructed. We have begun the planning for the Grand Opening and are very excited to showcase the new and exciting offerings we will be rolling out! One new feature you will see each month is our Member Spotlight, highlighting one member who is seeing success on their health and wellness journey. This month we highlight Chuck Kalb! Keep up the good work Chuck! Remember, we are still located in our temporary space inside the San Jose room and are continuing to offer group fitness classes each day during the week. We thank you so very much for your patience and understanding during this process and can’t wait to get into our new home. CUBS CORNER FEBRUARY 2024 VALENTINE’S RICE KRISPY TREATS INGREDIENTS 3 tbsp butter 4 cups mini marshmallows 6 cups crispy rice cereal 1/2 cup pink & red m&ms
INSTRUCTIONS In a large pan, melt butter over medium heat, add marshmallows and stir continuously until melted. Remove pot from heat and stir in cereal. Stir in chocolate candy and remove from pan as quickly as possible so it doesn’t melt. Place mixture in a greased pan. Wet fingers to smooth out treats. You can reserve some candy to sprinkle on top and press in with wetted fingers if desired. Use a heart shaped cookie cutter and cut rice krispy treats.
