FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hard to believe it is already February I guess it’s true that time flies when you ’ re having fun Seems as though you all agree Our social events continue to be a high draw January was no exception We held our first ever family Mini Glow Golf event Members of all ages were able to participate Even our youngest members got into the action on the kids course set up on the event lawn. If you couldn’t attend, check out the highlights on our Instagram and Facebook pages. We also sold out the dining room for A Night of Sinatra. The performance was crowd pleasingly authentic. It wasn’t just our scheduled events that shined. Our staff did an amazing job hosting a pop up watch party for the Jags playoff game against Kansas City. With only days to prepare, they scored a Touchdown providing a fun environment for us to cheer on our hometown team!

As we look ahead to the month of February, I encourage you to visit our event calendar available on line or on our San Jose CC app. The highlight of the month is Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Dinner. The menu is incredible. Reservations will go fast We are also hosting an arcade night for the kids on the 24th We will have laser tag, old school arcade games, and the ever popular game truck The event will be chaperoned, so drop your child off and stay for dinner

If you haven’t had a chance to tee it up in 2023, you are missing some awesome conditions The greens are as good as I can remember We are excited to have the opportunity to showcase our course as we host the JU Women’s Intercollegiate Tournament for the second year in a row This tournament draws some of the best teams in Women’s College Golf and will be streamed live The event is also open to spectators and we encourage our members to come support the JU women ’ s golf team

I’m happy to report that construction is moving along down at the Tennis complex. Court 12 has been completed and we have begun converting courts 1 and 2 into hydro courts. We expect construction to take 8 to 10 weeks. Once complete we will have the much-anticipated Pickle Ball courts. We are very pleased to add another first-class amenity for our membership to enjoy.Look for more communication on events and schedules for pickle ball as we get closer to completion of the project.

Lastly, I want to invite all members to attend our all-member meeting on February 8th at 6 pm. This is a great opportunity for us to come together as a community and discuss the club's progress, future plans, and any concerns or suggestions you may have In an effort for more transparency from leadership, a separate communication will be coming out prior to the meeting with a link where you will have access to the presentation slides and our updated financials available on our website

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to San Jose Country Club We look forward to seeing you at the club and working together to make it an even better place for our members and their families “It Was Always the Jags!”

Stephen Frick, Jr. Stephen Frick, Jr.

GOLF NEWS AND EVENTS

February 5

What a great start to the year it has been! With San Jose Country Club taking on record number of rounds course care and adhering to the club’s bylaws are extremely important Please be aware when you are playing to continue to fix ball marks, fill divots, and rake bunkers When walking on the green please be courteous to players behind you and pick up your feet When taking your ball out of the hole please use care to not damage the cup edges, remove the flag stick or use your hand without a glove on. Making tee times and checking in is a part of our club’s bylaws, please do not access the golf course without making a tee or checking with the golf shop to make sure the tee is open for play. Thank you for being a member of San Jose Country Club, we are looking forward to a great 2023!

February 9

As Bobby Jones once stated, “Few written rules are needed amongst a club of Ladies and Gentlemen” Please be reminded of our club rules as we head into 2023, no bags are to be brought in the clubhouse including the hallway of the golf shop Please utilize the bag drop in front of the golf shop and our outside attendants will assist you Men and Juniors must keep their shirts tucked in at all times, please remind your guests prior to arrival. All players must register prior to play, please check in with the golf shop before heading out for your tee time, this ensures proper check in and helps avoid billing errors.

I hope most everyone has taken the opportunity to visit the club’s website and read the recent USGA CCS report There is a lot of good information and article links within the report Numerous times during the CCS tour the USGA staff mentioned small area maintenance and management Thinking about this, we Superintendents have been doing this for many years, although we know them as microenvironments Different situations within the whole of the course

Microenvironments are caused by variations in soil conditions, sunlight, slope, drainage, traffic, air movement, or any combination of these Throughout the course here at San Jose we have many microenvironments, even within each hole, within each green, tee, and fairway. It is understandable why we employ small area maintenance and management techniques on golf courses, and rarely are any the same. The CCs report also noted data collections, which is part of or standard protocol, i.e., soil sampling. We routinely sample all greens and select tees and fairways for soil macro and micronutrient levels, pH, buffer pH, base saturation, Cation Exchange Capacity, and organic matter percentage. With these samples, we determine fertilizer needs and applications based on what the soil needs. Examples for greens above our normal ¼ pound of nitrogen every other week the sample shows that #1 green has good phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium levels.

However, the soil needs calcium to reach our target number Since the magnesium levels are adequate and the pH does not need to be raised, we will apply gypsum at a rate of 6 pounds for the entire green This will give us the calcium required and sulfur to help with oxidation of the other nutrients in the soil Our #3 green has lower than desired phosphorus levels so we will apply an application of 12-24-14 (phosphorus is the middle number) at a rate of 6 pounds of material for the entire green, roughly 1 pound of material per 1000 square feet of green As you can see, each of the 20 greens is its own little microenvironment and we use the soil samples to prescribe individual treatments for each It is kind of like having 20 children, all with different needs of attention Some need love, some need discipline, some just need understanding Please

FITNESS & AQUATICS NEWS AND EVENTS

The January rush in the fitness center definitely didn’t disappoint this year. We have seen about a 44% increase in member usage since the new year started and we ’ re loving it. To help keep that energy and enthusiasm going we have quite a bit planned for this year. Not only will we be making some significant upgrades to some of our equipment, but we are also ramping up the programming in a big way this year Each month we will be hosting special fitness/wellness events that you won’t want to miss! We are kicking off our new programming with a very fun evening “Pinot & Pilates” class on Thursday, February 9 at 6:00pm. Be sure to RSVP early as space may be limited. We are also forming a team of members and staff to compete in the Spartan Race on Sunday February 26. If you are interested in joining the team, please shoot me an email or stop by the Fitness Center front desk to sign up.

We have so much more planned throughout the year, so keep an eye out and come have some fun while you exercise in 2023!
