FROM THE
PRESIDENT As summer winds down and we are now halfway through the year, I wanted to update you that SJCC wages and cost of goods continue to rise with inflation and are exceeding our current revenue. Over the next couple of months, the Board, finance committee, and our able staff, will be closely monitoring all operations to ensure our fiduciary stewardship while maintaining the experience we have created at San Jose. A huge congratulations to the entire San Jose Team for an incredible 75th Anniversary Party. It was one of our most attended events of the year with over 500 people in attendance. The event featured activities for the children of all ages, including a rock-climbing wall, bungee trampoline and bounce houses. We had incredible music from the Bay Kings Band, the drinks were flowing, and the night ended with a spectacular firework show. I am looking forward to making July 3rd an annual event and a staple for San Jose. Be sure to stay on the lookout for some upcoming signature events including the Fall Festival on September 30 and our beloved Oyster Roast on October 28. After an undefeated season, our San Jose Pool Cats are the River City Champions for the second year in a row! Beating the competition by almost 1,100 points, our swimmers and coaches came out on top, and we are so proud of all their hard work and dedication. I look forward to seeing all of their success in the future and defending their championship title next year. The summer growing season has been huge for the golf course this year and we are definitely seeing more usage with rounds, practice range, and lessons than in 2021. As we enter our second aerification week between August 15-19, we are looking forward to a healthy fall season for the turf. Today, August 1, San Jose is proud to host the USGA Mid-Am Qualifier – the top three will advance to the US Mid-Amateur Championship at the legendary Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wisconsin.

HAPPY HAPPY HOUR As we head into the second half of our fiscal year, we are pleased to announce that the highly requested Happy Happy Hour will be returning once a quarter. Happy Happy Hour will be returning as follows: Each member number will be billed $1/month. This will be accumulated into a 50/50 pot at the end of each quarter that will be raffled off to one winning member at Happy Happy Hour. Each month you are billed $1, you will receive one entry into the pot, for a total of 3 entries per quarter. 50% of the pot will be given back to the winning member in the form of a check or club credit. You must be in attendance at Happy Happy Hour to be entered into the pot. If you do not pick up your tickets at the beginning of the event, you will not be entered. Members are able to opt-out of the $1/month charge. If you opt-out, you will not be able to participate in Happy Happy Hour. 50% of the winnings will go back to an employee engagement fund that will help cover costs of future employee engagements, programming and education. Happy Happy hour will be held on the last Wednesday of the quarter, beginning Wednesday, September 28. The location of the event will be revealed 3 days prior to the event as we will be hosting it around different parts of the club. Please note, dinner reservations will be REQUIRED the night of Happy Happy Hour. We will not accept any walk-ins that evening. We look forward to bringing this highly anticipated event back to San Jose. If you have any questions, please contact Brett Curley, GM at brett.curley@sjccjax.com. To opt-out, please contact Marissa Rehberger at marissa.rehberger@sjccjax.com.

UPDATES In February 2022, our Club embarked on the first steps with a new operating platform to enhance our communication through a new website and mobile application. However, to-date the majority of our membership has not taken advantage of several capabilities the platform has to offer. With increased traffic throughout the Club, we are beginning to increase our security measures and the first step begins with all of you. The Clubessential platform allows members to add a headshot into their profile that will populate across all backend systems. This will allow Club management and staff to be able to enhance your member experience through name personalization, correct charges and security throughout the Club. The system also allows you to add preferences into your account, choose communication groups and update any allergies/dietary restrictions. Below you will find details on how to update your profile, add a headshot and add preferences. If you need assistance logging into your account, please contact Marissa Rehberger at marissa.rehberger@sjccjax.com. As most have seen by now we have been spending a lot of time utilizing our mats for the range in the past couple of months. Some of this is due to lack of rain, transition from rye grass back to Bermuda, etc. You can help our range turf grow back faster by using proper divot patterns while practicing or warming up. Below is a brief explanation of each pattern and how it affects the growth of our practice facility. A scattered divot pattern removes the most amount of turf because a full divot is removed with every swing. Scattering divots results in the most turf loss and uses up the largest area of a tee stall. This forces the golf facility to rotate tee stalls most frequently and often results in an inefficient use of the tee. A concentrated divot pattern removes all turf in a given area. While this approach does not necessarily result in a full-sized divot removed with every swing, by creating a large void in the turf canopy there is little opportunity for timely turf recovery. The linear divot pattern involves placing each shot directly behind the previous divot. In so doing, a linear pattern is created and only a small amount of turf is removed with each swing. This can usually be done for 15 to 20 shots before moving sideways to create a new line of divots. So long as a minimum of 4 inches of live turf is preserved between strips of divots, the turf will recover quickly. Because this divot pattern removes the least amount of turf and promotes quick recovery, it is the preferred method. The golf course will be closed for aerification August 15th – 19th and will re-open for our Superintendents Revenge on Saturday, August 20th. Please contact the golf shop for your reciprocal needs. If you’re looking to plan ahead, here is a list of courses that will be available for tee times on a limited basis: Deerwood, Jax Golf & CC, PV Ocean & Lagoon, Eagle Harbor, Eagle Landing, Oak Marsh, Amelia National, King & Bear and Slammer & Squire.
BI-ANNUAL COURSE CONSULTING VISIT JOHN FOY
These 2 lightning strikes were moments apart. Note the presence of golfers in the first picture and their absence in the second. This group did the right thing and obeyed the Thorguard warning siren after the first strike. Often, we see play continuing after the warning sounds out. The following are some interesting facts about lightning: 1. Light from the flash of lightning travels 670,000,000 miles per hour but the actual lightning bolt only travels at 270,000 miles per hour, probably a bit faster than most of us can move 2. When lightning strikes sand or sandy soil it will fuse the sand together into small glass tubes called fulgurite 3. There are 1,400,000,000 around the world every year. That’s about 44 strikes every second 4. Lightning destroys trees. When lightning hits a tree, it travels just under the bark or skin in the sappy water layer that becomes instantly heated and expands typically blasting the bark off the tree and sometimes splitting the wood 5. While lightning bolts appear big, they are actually about the size of your thumb (1 inch wide) can average 2 to 3 miles in length and are 5 times hotter than the surface of the sun The next time you're golfing and the Thorguard sounds please remember these interesting facts.
Below is a link to our most recent notes from John Foy. John has been coming to San Jose for almost 30 years and has seen the transitions through the years to where we are today. It is a very good read and has some great suggested articles for additional information.
