FROM THE PRESIDENT Spring has finally sprung, and the beautiful Jacksonville weather is back. I want to thank you all for frequenting the Club and enjoying the amenities and weather. It’s great to see such a vibrant patio and Donald Ross Dining Room on Friday and Saturday evenings. As the warm weather quickly approaches, our Golf Course Maintenance team is working to subsidize some grass nemesis by aggressively spraying baited mole crickets and the emerging poa annua. They have done a great job to keep the course in wonderful playing conditions and we ask that you continue to do the same. Remember to fill a few extra divots or pick up lingering trash while enjoying your round with friends. As of 2020, more than 4 million Americans have taken up pickleball, according to the Sports and Fitness Association’s 2020 annual report, with numbers rapidly approaching 4.5 million today. The sport is on pace to grow by at least a half million players each year, and likely more. Pickleball statisticians and enthusiasts are predicting worldwide participation to be high enough for the sport to be an
Olympic event by 2028. Last month I outlined the approval from our Board of Governors, the expansion of this ever-growing sport to San Jose. The four-court conversion will take place on our current court #2 with a new court to be constructed in our current dirt parking lot. As you may have noticed, we have begun preparing the back lot for the new construction. In addition, next week we have the long-awaited return of our Tennis Member-Guest! Marie and the Tennis staff are excited to host another successful event and we encourage you to swing by and support the players. Stephanie and I wish those that celebrate a Happy Ramadan and Happy Easter and look forward to seeing you at the Club!

GOLF NEWS April brings the Masters and even more important the San Jose Club Championship! The Club Championship will be held on Friday, April 22, Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24. Toby Ragland will be looking to reclaim his title for the fourth year in a row! Spring is growing season for the grass and we encourage and remind you all to please take care of your course. Fill your own and extra divots, repair ballmarks on greens, rake bunkers and throw trash away. It is critical now, more than ever that each golfer contributes and practices player care on the course. The course will only remain as nice as you leave it each time you play. Penalties, including fines and suspension have been discussed if golfers are found not following proper course etiquette. As a
courtesy, please always leave the course in better shape than you found it. The Men’s Wednesday Night Golf has returned and we encourage you all to participate. As a reminder, if you play in more than two (2) nights, you will get billed the $25 league fee. If you have any questions or would like to sign up, please contact Bryce DiPatri at bryce.dipatri@sjccjax.com. Lastly, we are happy to introduce our new Teaching Professional, Stephanie Connelly-Eiswerth. If you have not already, please swing by the Golf Shop to introduce yourself and make her feel welcome. We are looking forward to a bright and busy spring!

TIP FROM THE PRO When it comes to putting, most golfers know that the stroke should look something like a pendulum, with the length of the backstroke about the same length as the forward stroke. And from inside six feet, I generally see this type of action. But from long range? Oh my. That’s when most golfers’ strokes tend to fall apart, getting progressively wristier and out of sequence. Poor distance control is the result. The culprit is usually too short of a backstroke. That same backstroke you use on a six-footer will only work on a forty-footer if you flick your wrists and over-accelerate your putter. As the putt gets longer, your entire stroke needs to get bigger, not just your forward stroke. If this sounds like you, try hitting some
forty-footers with a much longer backstroke. Swing the putter far enough back that the putter head feels like it “coasts” into the ball. If you’re used to having a wristy stroke and over-accelerating the putter, this will feel weird at first. It may feel like your backstroke is now longer than your forward stroke. Almost like you’re decelerating. But stick with it. Have a friend video you. I bet it doesn’t look as weird as it feels, and as you get used to it and your acceleration becomes more constant, your speed control will greatly improve.

HEAR THE DIRT Golf Couse Superintendent, Clayton Estes, attaches a wire tracker to the perimeter wire on hole #6. The Golf Course Maintenance staff will be starting the greens edging program during the month of April. Using the tracing wire helps to maintain the original green size and edge contours.
