History of the Tried Stone Adult Choir

On a summer evening, back in July of 1960, a group of young people gathered at Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church for worship through song. Most of them were elementary and junior high school students with one goal in mind – to give praises unto God through song. Under the leadership of J. Cornell Proctor, the choir began to grow in number and by 1965 had established itself as a frontrunner in the field of Gospel Soul Music. They originally sang as the junior choir, but overtime transitioned to the Young Adult Choir

Over the course of a few decades. they traveled on special concerts in Tennessee, South Carolina, Ohio, Missouri, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Virginia. The choir has also performed on a number of programs in Asheville including Bele Chere, Goombay Festival, The University of North Carolina, Craggy Prison, The Asheville Civic Center, Warren Wilson College, LBJ Job Corp Center, Southeastern Technical College, The North Carolina Bar Association Annual Convention, University of North CarolinaCharlotte, Western North Carolina University and the Asheville Community Theatre with the Ann Dunn Dancers, Asheville City and Buncombe County Schools.

Some of the momentous events of the choir’s travels were to have been in recording sessions with Lynn Nabors and Grover Norwood, to have been one of the guest choirs for the General Baptist State Convention and to have appeared in concert with the Reverend Isaac Douglas, The Walter Hawkins Family, The O’Neal Twins, Shirley Caesar, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Kingsmen, Big Freada Wallace, Barbara Mandrell, Luther Barnes and John P. Kee, all world acclaimed gospel singers. Another achievement of the choir was to have been the guest choir in Norfolk, Virginia, for the Commissioning of the USS Asheville.

The choir has received numerous awards for its achievements in gospel music including “Best Dressed Choir” presented by the Western North Carolina Gospel Music Workshop, “The Golden Note Award” presented by the Central Optimist Club and “Soloist of The Year” presented by the Western North Carolina Gospel Music Workshop to Carolyn McClellan. The choir received the Mountain Heritage Award presented by Western Carolina University. In 2010, the choir changed its name from the Young Adult Choir and transitioned into the Adult Choir.

To my choir,

Over the past 65 years, God has blessed us to lift our voices in praise to His holy name. I am deeply grateful for the time, energy, and unwavering commitment each of you has given to the choir and to Tried Stone. You have served faithfully, often sacrificing your own busy schedules to glorify God through music. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

This journey has not always been easy. We have faced laughter, criticism, and even mistreatment but through it all, God has carried us. If it had not been for the Lord on our side, we would not have made it! We have witnessed His miracles within this choir, and we have each been showered with blessings beyond measure. To Him alone belongs all the praise!

As we move forward, let us continue to serve Him wholeheartedly and trust Him in every season. Keep striving for excellence and pressing toward the mark for the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Thank you for allowing me the honor of serving as your choir director for the past 65 years. It has been one of the greatest joys of my life.
