Selected Highlights of 2019-2020 On Friday, March 13, 2020, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards announced that because of the growing threat of the coronavirus, schools statewide would close effective Monday, March 16. At St. Joseph’s Academy, a Continuous Learning Plan was devised to enable virtual teaching and learning from home. When schools were ordered closed for the remainder of the semester, end-of-the-year events at SJA were cancelled or held virtually. Science students competed in an online version of the Louisiana State Science and Engineering Fair. Ten seniors participated in the traditional May Crowning ceremony from their homes. The Academy Awards program was shared online, and members of the class of 2020 presented their Senior Poem and Farewell Skit virtually. SJA recognized the many achievements of the senior class with a virtual Honors Convocation on May 15, and on May 17, graduates and their parents came to campus in carefully orchestrated shifts to receive their diplomas. Sister Helen Prejean, a 1957 graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy, said of these times, “Our social contract is holding together while staying apart.” Throughout the year, the Academy community was guided by the charism theme of Great-Hearted Love: Serving the Dear Neighbor. Students, faculty and staff were called to address the needs of the times and of all people without distinction. SJA students contributed 39,435 hours of service during this shortened school year. One hundred twelve seniors dedicated 50 or more hours to service during each of their four years. In 2019, 385 Academy students took AP courses, with 301 students, or 81 percent, scoring a 3 or higher on their AP exams to earn college credit. SJA had a record 137 AP Scholar Award winners, including three National AP Scholars. It was a banner fall season for SJA athletics. The swim team won its ninth consecutive Division I-Class 5A state championship, and the cross country team won its fourth consecutive Class 5A state championship. The volleyball team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA state volleyball tournament. In winter competition, the track and field team made history by winning the indoor state championship for the first time in school history. The basketball and soccer teams advanced to the quarterfinal round of their respective state tournaments. With the statewide closing of schools, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association cancelled the remainder of the spring sports season, including postseason play. Spring sports at SJA are bowling, golf, gymnastics, softball, tennis and track and field. The St. Joseph’s Academy cheerleaders finished second in the 2020 National High School Cheerleading Championship, competing in Super Varsity Division II. In the World School Cheerleading Championship, the team finished second to earn another silver medal. The Red Steppers, established in the spring of 2019 as SJA’s first competitive dance team, competed in two categories at the National Dance Team Championship, finishing fourth in Game Day and ninth in Jazz. Glynis Davis, whose teaching career spans 44 years, was named the 2019-2020 Distinguished Catholic School Educator by the Diocese of Baton Rouge. Stephanie Spielman Cargile, class of 1988, was named SJA’s Distinguished Graduate for 2020. Inducted into the SJA Athletic Hall of Fame as members of the 2020 class were Linda McCall McCann ’61 (basketball), Kathy Saichuk (athletic director and coach of cross country, track & field and basketball) and Stephanie Dellocono Osorno ’06 (tennis). The mission of St. Joseph’s Academy is to educate young women as responsible and unifying members of the world community. In the spirit and charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph, St. Joseph’s Academy offers opportunities for faith development in the Catholic tradition, academic excellence and personal growth.
