Let Peace Begin with Me At mass on New Year’s Day, we ended the Eucharistic celebration by singing Let There Be Peace on Earth. Trust. ݯ ɠs O Ř Ķs NjŘ ǼŸ ǼNjȖǣǼ µŸ_ʰ ɠs ǼÌsŘ learn to trust ourselves. Trust that God has a path for you and will never leave you on your journey. Ana Wiggins Barras, Class of 2003 Ana Wiggins Barras fell in love with gymnastics at the age of 5. So enamored of the sport was the youngster that when she wasn’t at the gym, she was walking on her hands throughout her house. Ana began her competitive gymnastics career at the age of 8 and would compete at the club level throughout her high school years. An outstanding athlete, she also swam in the Baton Rouge summer league during her elementary through high school years and ran track in middle school. Ana entered St. Joseph’s Academy excited to participate in high school athletics. Like many high schools at the time, SJA didn’t have a gymnastics team, so Ana joined the swim team and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. But juggling swimming, year-round club gymnastics and schoolwork proved daunting, and Ana knew it was time to choose the one sport on which she’d focus. Given her passion for gymnastics, the decision was easy. During a physical education class early in her sophomore year, Ana was approached by her teacher, Brenda LeBlanc, who was also the coach of SJA’s volleyball team. Brenda noticed Ana’s athleticism and asked if she had any interest in volleyball. Ana politely responded that gymnastics was her one-and-only sport.

Following the state meet in the spring of 2002, Ana’s club teammates couldn’t stop talking about how much fun they’d had. Ana decided to explore the possibility of establishing a gymnastics team at SJA. Before her senior year, Ana met with Brenda to ask if she would be willing to serve as the sponsor for a new gymnastics team. Ana had already talked to her club coach, Robbie Banta, who was on board to coach her as a competitor in the LHSAA state meet. SJA Remembers Beloved Science Teacher Sister Ursula Harelson Sister Ursula Harelson, CSJ, a Sister of St. Joseph for 71 years, passed away at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas, on December 13, 2016, at the age of 88. Sr. Ursula was born in Baton Rouge, one of six children of the late Andrew Leo and Mary Zilma Edmonston Harelson. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1945. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in New Orleans that year and professed perpetual vows in 1950. She attended Loyola University and earned a bachelor of science degree in education in 1960 with minors in math and chemistry. She attended Union College in New York on an NSF grant in 1968-1970 and earned a master’s in mathematics with a minor in chemistry in 1973. She attended numerous workshops and conventions to further her professional growth in theology and science. Sr. Ursula began teaching primary grades at Our Lady of the Rosary School in New Orleans in 1947. She continued teaching at the elementary level at St. Joseph Parochial in Baton Rouge and at St. Rose in New Orleans. From 1960 to 1965, she taught at St. Joseph Academy in Bay St. Louis, followed by three years at SJA in Baton Rouge and four years at SJA New Orleans. From 1972 to 1976, she taught and was the coordinator at Catholic High of Pointe Coupee. Her last teaching assignment was at SJA from 1976 to 2007. She was named Outstanding Chemistry Teacher of the Region in 1990 and was honored as a distinguished graduate of her alma mater in 1994 and 2001. Monsignor William L. Greene Scholarship Established “Uncle Bill and Aunt Rosalia were very close to the Sisters,” said their niece, Susan Greene McCall. “The siblings were raised in the shadow of the Convent.” Father Greene received his master of arts from Notre Dame Seminary and was ordained a priest on June 3, 1950, at St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans by Bishop L. Abel Caillouet, the same priest who baptized him and gave him his First Communion. He served at St. Joseph Cathedral and Our Lady of Mercy and was then the founding pastor of St. Pius X Parish from 1963 to 1970, pastor of St. Thomas More from 1970 to 1990 and pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in St. Francisville and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Jackson, Louisiana. Father William Greene poses with former SJA President Sister Adele Lambert at a book signing in Mother Alice Hall.
The Monsignor William L. Greene Scholarship has been established in the St. Joseph’s Academy Foundation to provide tuition assistance to deserving young women and their families. Father Greene passed away on October 17, 2016, three days after celebrating his 91st birthday. He was preceded in death by his Ƽ NjsŘǼǣʰ NJŸEsNjǼ ƻ ȖĶ µNjssŘs Ř_ r¯ʩs ËÞOĨŎ Ř Greene; his brothers Paul, Hickman, Roy and ǣǼÌŸŘ µNjssŘsʱ ÌÞǣ ǣÞǣǼsNjǣ NJŸǣ ĶÞ r¯ʩs µNjssŘsʰ SJA class of 1928, and Stelle Greene Cogan, SJA class of 1931; and nephew David Greene. He is survived by one brother, Frank Greene; nephews John Cogan, Dr. Bobby Greene and Dr. Ned Greene; and nieces Trimi McRea, Susan McCall and Barbara Morrison. For more than 50 years, Father Greene’s mother maintained a steadfast dedication to the Sisters of St. Joseph and shared an especially deep friendship with Mother Alice. Upon his retirement, Father Greene purchased his family’s home across the street from Mother Alice Hall on Kleinert Avenue. He continued to say mass for the Sisters and served as St. Joseph’s Academy’s chaplain for several years. “Because he considered the Sisters his best friends, it was very important for Uncle Bill to leave a legacy at St. Joseph’s Academy,” Susan said. “The scholarship in his name is a wonderful tribute to those lifelong friendships.” Father Greene authored several books and enjoyed his extensive travels to conduct research.

SJA Breaks Ground on Academy Student Center St. Joseph’s Academy gathered as a school community on the morning of November 16 for the groundbreaking and blessing of the site on which the new Academy Student Center will be built. Construction will begin in late January and is anticipated to be completed by August of 2018 for the start of the year-long celebration of the 150th anniversary of SJA’s founding by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1868.
“Our health and wellness curriculum, as well as our interscholastic and intramural athletic programs, are a vital complement to our strong academic and religious OȖNjNjÞOȖĶ ʳ ǻÌs O _sŎɴ ǢǼȖ_sŘǼ NsŘǼsNj ɠÞĶĶ EsŘsʩǼ ǼÌs young women of SJA by providing a wonderful space for personal growth and a holistic education.”
The Academy Student Center is being built on the corner of Broussard and Parker streets near the current Activity Center. Additionally, SJA student-athletes will compete in a state-of-the-art complex, and the Academy will be afforded much-needed space to celebrate masses and other school events with extended families, grandparents and friends.
The Academy’s current strategic plan, launched in 2013, called for the assessment of school facilities to ensure a top-quality educational environment for the young women of SJA. Students, parents, alumnae, faculty/staff and friends were asked to provide feedback. Across the board, constituents weighed in on the need for a facility to ensure the continuation of the Academy’s outstanding athletic program as well as to further the wellbeing of each student through exercise, conditioning and learning opportunities focused on healthy lifestyles. Additionally, survey and focus-group respondents underlined the need for adequate space for school-wide gatherings.
The new facility will include a multipurpose gymnasium, ʩǼŘsǣǣ NjŸŸŎʰ ƼÌɴǣÞO Ķ ǼÌsNj ƼɴˀÌɴ_NjŸ ǼÌsNj Ƽɴ Njs ʰ sports medicine classroom, Hall of Fame gallery, locker rooms, concession area and lobby space featuring the history of SJA and its athletic program as well as interactive screen walls. The gymnasium will meet LHSAA requirements to enable SJA to host basketball and volleyball playoffs as well as support other SJA athletic teams and educational needs. An exterior Plaza of Champions will pay tribute to SJA’s state championship teams. “The Academy Student Center continues our vision of balance among the three pillars of our mission statement,” SJA President Jan Rhorer Breen said.

Participants also shared practices and learned valuable strategies by attending various breakout sessions. National Blue Ribbon Schools are on education’s cutting edge, pioneering innovative educational practices from professional learning communities. Schools are nominated by their respective state departments of education and then complete a comprehensive application about school practices. Schools may be nominated as Exemplary High Performing (among the top schools in a state) or Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing. SJA was honored in the former category.
Three additional Baton Rouge schools joined St. Joseph’s Academy as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2016: St. George School, St. Thomas More Catholic School and Madison Preparatory Academy. Art Department Showcases Course Offerings The St. Joseph’s Academy Art Department hosted the inaugural Passport through the Arts art fair during lunch hours on December 1 and 2. Students visited display tables in the Academy Arts Center gallery and rotunda to learn about the wide variety of art classes offered. Students were able to ask questions of other students who had taken the courses in which they were interested. Students received a “passport,” which was stamped at each art table and entered into a drawing for Amazon gift cards. Art Department faculty member Stacy Rennhoff coordinated the two-day event. “We wanted to
promote the Art Department to current students,” she said. “Passport through the Arts enabled students to learn about each art discipline, including course structure, prerequisites and content.” Students were also able to gain a better understanding of the many courses available to them. Each table featured video, sound and/ or visual works of art. Students visited displays to learn more about AP Art History; AP Music Theory; ƻ ǢǼȖ_ÞŸ NjǼʱ NjǼ Ýʰ ÝÝʰ ÝÝÝ Ř_ Ýəʱ D Ř_ʱ NÌŸÞNjʱ ^ ŘOsʱ Drama; FACS Sewing; FACS Nutrition; Fine Arts Survey; Media Arts; Music & Media; and Music & Technology.
“We are excited to offer this innovative program to our students,” Dr. Lambert said. “Not only does it help prepare students for college and beyond, but it aligns wonderfully with our emphasis on 21st century skills. The program also gives our teachers more leeway with curriculum choices so students can access more challenging coursework and sharpen their reading and writing skills.”
As they prepare to select courses for the 2017-2018 academic year, students participated in the inaugural Passport through the Arts to learn about the many arts electives available.
