1. QUIET YOURSELF Pause. Invite the Holy Spirit to help you see your day as God sees it. Ask God to be with you and for His grace. Know that you are in God’s presence.

2. REFLECT ON GRATITUDE Look at your day in a spirit of gratitude. Everything is a gift from God. What are you thankful for today? Recall the moments of good news you received and the blessings you were given. Look for the small and large gifts that God has given you that day, and thank God for these blessings.

When you pause and thank God for all that you have been given, you will discover the hidden joys in the moments of our lives. Gratitude is the hallmark of Ignatian Spirituality, for God endlessly bestows gifts on us.

Discover GOD IN ALL THINGS As St. Joseph’s Academy embarks on its new strategic plan for the next three to five years, our school community is implementing strategic initiatives in six areas. In the area of faith development, we want to ensure that the mission of St. Joseph’s Academy is grounded in the Gospel of Jesus Christ in harmony with the teachings of the Catholic Church and the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph. One step we are initiating is the expansion of our daily prayers to include a method of prayer called The Examen.

St. Ignatius of Loyola believed that we discover God in all things, at every moment, even in the difficult and ordinary times. To do this, he developed in his spiritual exercises a prayer called the Examen, which helps us discern God’s presence in our lives. The Examen is a method of prayer that reviews your day to see where God was present in our lives and where He was absent. It is a time set aside for thankful reflection and to grow in our relationship with God. We become more aware of how God has guided us in the past, how he is with us in the present and how he calls us in the future.

3. NOTICE GOD Where did you feel an abundance of faith, hope, love, joy or peace? Were there moments in your day when you felt God’s presence? Look for signs of God’s presence in the events of the day: lunch with a friend, a walk around the lakes, a kind word from a colleague, a phone call from a friend. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to discover where God is in your life. Listen for the voice of God. He is speaking to you throughout your day.

4. NOTICE WHERE GOD FELT ABSENT Where was there a lack of hope, joy and peace? Ask for the grace to know where you turned away from God and did not listen to His voice directing you to kindness, compassion and love of others. Ask God to help you become more loving and giving.

Where did you fail to respond to God’s invitation that day? Maybe you chose not to help a friend or call someone who was hurting. Ask God for forgiveness and to help you grow in the graces He gives you each day.

5. LOOK AHEAD Ask God for the grace you need in the coming day and for the ability to see God’s presence more clearly. What is the Holy Spirit leading you to pay attention to, and what is your response to it?

6. CLOSE Always close with a prayer. Many say the Our Father. We at SJA close with a prayer to St. Joseph who is our provider, our protector and a model of a humble servant of God. The Examen reminds us of the simple joys of life.

It also helps us to find God in the moments of our lives. We are pilgrims on a journey, and God is with us every step of the way. Pray the Examen as you journey with God. Every moment of every day is a blessed time when God can appear and help us.

By David Williams When you’ve rocketed into space and flown rings around Earth, what else could possibly compare for Hayley Arceneaux, a 2010 graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy?

How about her hero’s return to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital on a blue-sky Thursday morning, with enthusiastic supporters, including patients and their families, gathered to greet the first pediatric cancer survivor in space. They cheered, clanged bells and waved hand-made signs that said, “Welcome back to Earth!” and “There’s a special place-n-space 4 Hayley” and “We love you to the moon & back!” Even the St. Jude facility dogs, Huckleberry and Puggle, were there, in custom silver space helmets.

And Hayley’s response to all this love? Turns out you don’t need zero gravity to float on air.

“Every single one of you patients are my heroes,” said Hayley at the parade’s first stop, just outside the doors she entered, nearly two decades before, as a 10-year-old with osteosarcoma. “I just want to show you that if I can do this, you can do this.”

St. Jude saved Hayley’s life, and her left leg. After limb-sparing surgery, she received a titanium rod in her left thigh and hasn’t slowed down since.

She’s a world traveler who’s visited five continents and in September became the youngest American in space, part of the first all-civilian crew into orbit. The aptly named Inspiration4 mission has St. Jude as its charitable beneficiary for an unprecedented fundraising campaign, with commitments for $225 million so far.

“It was almost 20 years ago exactly that I was standing right here, walking through these doors for the first time, and I was so scared,” said Hayley, wearing her Inspiration4 flight suit adorned with a St. Jude patch. “And St. Jude became my home, really quickly.”

As a patient, she vowed to return to St. Jude someday to work; and she has, as a physician assistant. But never has her arrival at her “dream job” been met with this kind of pomp. She rode through campus atop the back of a convertible, smiling and waving, basking and glowing.

There were three stops along the way, starting outside the Patient Care Center, where patients and families filled the crowd. She also addressed employees of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude, and researchers, doctors, nurses and other employees of St. Jude. continued on next page

Asked about her favorite moment of a flight that took the Inspiration4 crew 366 miles above Earth, traveled at 17,500 miles per hour and orbited the planet every 90 minutes for three days, Hayley brought it all back home to St. Jude.

“Of course, the highlight of my mission – and, really, my other crew members said the same – was that call from space with the St. Jude patients,” she said. “That was a life highlight. It was so meaningful, and several of the kids on that call were my patients. Getting to hear their little voices was just so uplifting.”

Amid the cheers and applause, the parade had a quiet moment, too, as the car stopped so Hayley could talk to a patient in a wheelchair.

It was a reminder of Hayley’s remarkable story and the arc it has followed: A scared little girl facing a lifethreatening disease. A second-chance life that’s seen this 29-year-old survivor return to work for the cause.

And a seat on a historic flight that captured the nation’s attention, inspired kids everywhere to dream of the cosmos and has exceeded its extraordinary fundraising goal.

“And we’re not stopping,” said Hayley, who knows a little something about accomplishing a mission.

In celebration of fellow Redsticker Hayley Arceneaux ’10 blasting off aboard Inspiration4, the world’s first all-civilian mission to space, SJA students, faculty and staff donned astronaut and space-inspired attire on September 15 in her honor.

Hayley looks back at her time at SJA with fondness and gratitude. She said she had a great foundation for meeting the challenge of traveling in space. “SJA set me up for success,” she said. “I was grateful to have gotten such a great education. I was well prepared for college and was then able to become a PA and get my dream job at St. Jude. I especially loved the femaleempowering culture at SJA. It’s something I carry with me and feel passionate about sharing.”

On the morning of September 15, as St. Joseph’s Academy graduate Hayley Arceneaux ’10 and three fellow Inspiration4 crew members were set to blast off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, SJA students, faculty and staff came together in prayer.

O God, you are always there, for your love reaches everywhere Above the clouds and below the seas I know your hand will cover me through the starry night And in the dawn’s bright light You are beside me always Knowing when I need you most I carry your presence within me Along with Sticker Sister pride As I reach new heights on this space ride Keep me safe, watch over me.

S JA B OA R D O F D I R ECTO R S H OSTS 1 8 6 8 D I N N E R The St. Joseph’s Academy Board of Directors hosted The 1868 Dinner on October 11 at the Renaissance Baton Rouge Hotel. The event honored Donor Society members, families and individuals establishing or endowing scholarships in the past two years and those who served in volunteer leadership capacities. SJA’s Outstanding Alumnae for 2021 – Elise Gauthier Fryou, class of 1957, and Kellie Michelli Barton, class of 1986 – were honored, as was Sister Joan Laplace, the 2021 Spirit of SJA Award recipient.

SJA Board Chair Shane Morrison welcomed the large gathering of guests and thanked them for the important role they play as partners in the Academy’s mission. Kelly Sword Hurtado, class of 1981, served as emcee of the event.

Enjoying The 1868 Dinner were Principal Stacia Andricain, Spirit of SJA Award recipient Sister Joan Laplace, Outstanding Alumnae Elise Gauthier Fryou ’57 and Kellie Michelli Barton ’86 and President Jan Rhorer Breen ’69.

Seven new scholarships were established in the SJA Foundation during the past two years: the Walter L. Comeaux II Memorial Scholarship, Grace Morrison ’19 Scholarship, Katie Thompson ’16 Scholarship, Toni Silva Kirby ’80 Scholarship, SJA Mothers’ Club Scholarship, Carolyn Perkins Memorial Scholarship and the Francis and Sally Crifasi Family Scholarship.

Another six scholarships were fully endowed during this time.

Andrea Clesi McMakin ’74 was surprised by the announcement that SJA’s first endowed chair, the Andrea Clesi McMakin ’74 Endowed Chair for STEM, has been established by her husband, Wally McMakin.

SJA President Jan Rhorer Breen recognized former recipients of the Outstanding Alumnae award in attendance. The evening culminated with the celebration of the 2021 Outstanding Alumnae and Spirit of SJA Award recipients.

Elise Gauthier Fryou ’57 In the fall of 1943, Elise Gauthier Fryou ’57 was too young to start kindergarten at St. Joseph’s Academy.

But her older brother was headed to school, and Elise didn’t want to be left behind.

She would spend two years in Sister Thecla’s kindergarten class, and her educational career at SJA would span 14 years.

A self-described average student, Elise enjoyed many of the extra-curricular activities offered by SJA, including the drama club, intramural sports and cheerleading. She also spent a good deal of time in the office of the Academy’s principal, Sister Claire Germaine Henritzy, who told Elise’s parents that her tongue was connected in the middle and wagged on both ends. Even with the occasional behavioral misstep, Elise never missed a day of school and received the attendance award upon graduation in 1957.

Diploma in hand, Elise went to work at Fidelity National Bank, where she would spend six years.

When she married Roland Fryou and started their family, she became a stay-at-home mom, raising four children and being an active volunteer with Our Lady of Mercy parish. She was elected to the parish council and worked as altar server supervisor, trainer and scheduler. She is now a member of St. George parish, where she serves on the prayer line committee.

In her late 40s, Elise joined the Jammin’ Grannies, a group of tap dancers who entertained nursing home residents throughout the city. Elise also accompanied her mother, Elise Gauthier, in visiting friends and relatives in nursing homes. After her mother passed away, Elise honored her memory by continuing to take home-baked treats to friends and loved ones.

With her four children raised, Elise decided to reenter the workforce. At the age of 50, she went to work at the Baton Rouge General Hospital and has now been there for 31 years. She has been recognized for her hard work and dedication and is the recipient of the prestigious Award of Excellence.

Elise is an Associate of the Congregation of St. Joseph. Associates are individuals who desire to live in union with God, one another and all creation.

In response to God’s great love and with mutual support, associates are deeply engaged in living the Congregation’s mission of unity and inclusive love of God and the dear neighbor without distinction.

Elise also serves as her class representative at SJA and is an active volunteer for alumnae events.

Elise and Roland’s children are Melanie Kleinpeter (David); Mark Fryou, Sharyn Lithgoe (Brandon) and Stephen Fryou (Christie). They have three grandchildren, Sidney, Lanny and Jeremy Kleinpeter, and two great-grandchildren, Lillian and Griffin Kleinpeter.

Kellie Michelli Barton ’86 Kellie Michelli Barton '86 is the vice president of talent management for the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System (FMOLHS) in Baton Rouge. Her work includes recruitment of talent, team member engagement and retention, leader assessment, performance management, coaching and succession planning for the FMOLHS workforce, which includes more than 18,000 team members. She has served in this ministry since 1998 and has worked to streamline the overall team member experience and leadership formation process. She specializes in working with groups to reach and sustain business goals.

Council for a Better Louisiana. She is also an adjunct faculty member for the LSU Executive Education Program.

Prior to assuming this role, Kellie was the director of leadership development at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. Her work included design and delivery of leadership development programs and hardwiring the “onboarding” experience for new employees.

As a breast cancer survivor, Kellie has been a guest speaker for the Go Red for Women Campaign in Monroe, Louisiana. She is committed to health and exercise and has completed eighth half-marathons.

With more than 22 years of healthcare-related experience at FMOLHS, Kellie’s focus is strengthening leadership groups to maximize business results. She is known for her enthusiasm for learning and bringing an abundance of energy to every task she assumes.

Kellie is a member of the National Institute of Healthcare Leadership, a certified human resource professional and an alumna of Leadership Louisiana, sponsored by the

Kellie serves in numerous volunteer activities that support her church, school and community.

She has served as the chapter advisor for Delta Delta Delta Sorority at LSU and created a leadership development program for Tri-Delta that focuses on newly elected officers each year. She served on the LSU Greek Task Force after the hazing death of fraternity pledge Max Gruver to create a safer collegiate experience.

She was named Greek Gala Outstanding Alumni in 2016 for her volunteer work.

For many years, Kellie has served as a guest speaker for Career Day at SJA. Her talks focus on making good career choices and mastering the three skills young women need to be successful.

Kellie graduated from Louisiana State University with an emphasis in communication and business. She and Bob have been married for 29 years and have three children, Sam (CHS class of 2015), Kate (SJA class of 2016) and Anne (SJA class of 2019).

Sister Joan Laplace

Sister Joan Laplace is the recipient of the Spirit of SJA Award, given to a member of the SJA community who has provided years of loyal service but is not a graduate of the Baton Rouge campus. Honorees embrace service to the dear neighbor without distinction; are generous in their response to the needs of St. Joseph’s Academy; and support the mission of the Academy. The Spirit of SJA Award is bestowed upon an individual who embodies the mission of the Congregation of St. Joseph, living and working that all people may be united with God and with one another.

Sister Joan retired in June of 2019 after 55 years in Catholic education. After she graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy-New Orleans in 1959, she earned a bachelor of science in secondary education: English and French from Loyola University New Orleans in 1964 and an M.Ed. in counseling and administration from Louisiana State University in 1968.

Her ministry at St. Joseph’s Academy began in 1964. She taught English, French and religion. From 1966 to 1968, she served as assistant principal and counselor, introducing the first formal guidance

program at the high school. She was named principal in 1968, a position she held for 11 years.

Sister Joan spent 1979 as the public relations director at SJA-New Orleans, directing internal and external communications as the Sisters of St. Joseph closed the school after 125 years. She returned to Baton Rouge in 1981 to join SJA’s guidance department and establish a development program. She served as SJA’s first development director, overseeing a capital campaign in the mid-1980s that resulted in the construction of the Activity Center and renovation of the former gym into today’s library.

In 1991, Sister Joan joined Brother Martin High School in New Orleans as community relations director, a post she held for 15 years before returning to SJA on August 1, 2006, to direct the development office, now Mission Advancement. She retired as the department’s associate director on June 27, 2019.

Sister Joan continues to be active in the community.

She was a member of the board of directors at St. Vincent de Paul from 2012 until 2020 and continues to serve on the executive committee. She has been a committee member of the Mirabeau Water Garden project since 2008. Located on the site of the former convent and land of the Sisters in New Orleans, the project will provide for storm-water management to enhance and protect the neighborhood. Additionally, Sister Joan serves on the St. Joseph’s Academy board of directors.

S JA W E LCOM ES V I S I TO R S TO O P E N H O US E 2 0 2 1 St. Joseph’s Academy hosted Open House 2021 on October 21. Girls in 7th and 8th grades and their families registered for specific tour times to comply with social-distancing and crowd-size restrictions.

Guests toured SJA’s beautiful and historic campus and enjoyed the Academy experience firsthand. They enjoyed student performances and demonstrations showcasing the arts, academics, sports medicine and the Andrea Clesi McMakin ’74 STEM Lab. Visitors saw the volleyball and basketball teams practicing and watched student technicians at work in the student-run Help Desk. SJA cheerleaders and the Red Steppers competition dance team performed.

Visitors were also able to speak with administrators, teachers, counselors and parents.

The Mothers’ Club was in charge of decorations for the evening and also helped greet and direct families. The SJA Dads’ Club provided gumbo for faculty, staff and Student Ambassadors prior to the start of the event.

The Crifasi family established The Sally and Francis Crifasi Family Scholarship in thanksgiving and gratitude for the generosity shown to Sally when she was a student at St. Joseph’s Academy. Her father was ill and unable to work, and SJA provided partial tuition assistance to enable Sally to continue her education. Sally (White) graduated in 1952 and would eventually teach a sixth-grade class of girls for a year.

The scholarship, which Sally said enables her to “pay it forward,” helps other young women enjoy the gift of an outstanding education based in the spirituality taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Sally considers her Academy education to be a blessing, helping to shape the core values she and others continue to hold dear. Among her family members who are Academy graduates are sister Sylvia White Zimmerle ’56 (deceased), daughter-in-law Julie Holliday Crifasi ’85 and sisters-in-law Jenny Crifasi Fonte ’34 (deceased) and Rosemary Crifasi Orr ’50 (deceased). Granddaughter Grace Anne Crifasi will graduate in May of 2022.

Wally McMakin established SJA’s first endowed chair in honor of his wife, Andrea Clesi McMakin, class of 1974. An endowed chair is a permanent fund established by one or more donors as part of SJA’s Endowment Program. Only the annual earnings from that fund are used to help provide additional opportunities for students and for professional training for faculty and staff in areas designated by the donor.

The Andrea Clesi McMakin ’74 Endowed Chair for STEM will enhance SJA’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines as well as provide additional training for faculty and staff.

Andrea worked with WBRZ-News 2 for more than 30 years until her retirement in 2007. She was a trailblazer, not only in local journalism but also in opening doors for young women to pursue opportunities in multiple fields.

In 2015, Wally established the Andrea Clesi McMakin’74 STEM Lab at SJA. The STEM Lab is popular with students, who enjoy working on laser cutters and 21 3D printers. It’s also a classroom for engineering courses and the Robotics team.

G R A D UAT E S E RV ES AS A RT D I R ECTO R O N M EG A- P O P U L A R ‘ Y E L LOWSTO N E ’ D R A M A Yellowstone, cable TV’s most watched show, is widely praised for its captivating storyline, larger-than-life characters and stunning vistas.

Set in picturesque Montana, the Paramount Network drama follows the Dutton family, owners of the largest ranch in the United States, and its conflicts with land developers, a Native American reservation and a national park.

Starring Kevin Costner and written by Taylor Sheridan, the must-watch drama returns for season four in November. And a St. Joseph’s Academy graduate is in the middle of the action.

Yvonne Boudreaux ’96 is Yellowstone’s art director.

She is part of a three-person team charged with creating the look of the set. Their work landed Yellowstone its first Emmy nomination, for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program.

In 2018, Yvonne got a telephone call from Cary White, a television and film designer with whom she had worked previously. Cary was the production designer for the upstart show and wanted Yvonne to join the project as art director for season two. “I had never heard of the show, but I thought a modern-day western in Utah and Montana with Cary White sounded like a dream,” Yvonne said.

As supervising art director, Yvonne facilitates the production designer’s vision. “I work with the set designer and graphic designer with the overall designs of the sets,” she said. “I engage with the construction, paint and greens departments to help aid in the creation of sets on a sound stage and on location.”

Now entering her third year with Yellowstone, Yvonne is on location in Montana and Utah five or six months per season. Prep, filming and wrap of the series demands 12- to 14-hour days, five days a week. But the rewards are as vast as the Montana skyline. “The crew on Yellowstone are the most talented people I have ever worked with,” Yvonne said. “We have built a beautiful community that is family to me, and we have been through the trenches together and come out on top, literally and figuratively. I keep in touch with many crew members between seasons and hope to continue to build relationships with them moving forward on other projects.”

On weekends and at the conclusion of each season, Yvonne heads home to Austin, Texas, where she spends as much time as possible with her husband and daughter. “We live on 10 acres, and it brings me great joy and peace to come home and look up at the stars at night,” she said.

“Working on Yellowstone in Montana gave me the courage to move out to the country and live on some land. We are extremely happy and grateful on our little ranch.”

She’s also extremely happy to be part of the show’s popularity. “When I started working on this show, no one had ever heard of it,” she said. “Now I laugh when I see people wearing Yellowstone t-shirts at the grocery store or getting really excited when they find out I am on the show. A gentleman almost tipped over at Home Depot when he found out I worked on the show.

They call me the Yellowstone lady at the doctor’s office.”

Yvonne graduated with a degree in architecture from Louisiana State University. She earned her master’s in theatrical design with a concentration in set design from the University of Texas at Austin. She has been the production designer at the Sundance Institute Directors Lab and teaches production design for film and television at UT Austin. She also produced a documentary, 61 Bullets, about her Cajun family’s association with the 1935 shooting of Huey P. Long.

During her four years at SJA, Brianna was a talented and hard-working student while staying busy year ’round as a member of the volleyball and track and field teams. She was the 2011 state champion in the shot put and discus, earning All-State honors. As a junior, she set the state outdoor meet record in the discus (132-5) and placed second in the shot put, once again earning All-State recognition. She was named SJA’s Outstanding Athlete for 2010-2011 and would attend Southeastern Louisiana University on an athletic scholarship.

After graduation, Brianna studied at the Southern University Law Center while also working as a graduate assistant for the Louisiana Board of Regents. Her work was unique, as she held two positions. As a program manager for the Louisiana Center Addressing Substance Use in Collegiate Communities, she oversaw and coordinated university participation in the 2021 Biannual Core and Drug Alcoholic Survey. She advised and consulted with university liaisons to ensure federal compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act.

After graduating from law school in 2020, Brianna added a second set of responsibilities as associate general counsel and policy advisor with Legal and External Affairs. She advised the agency and in-state public post-secondary institutions on laws and statutes concerning higher education.

As a first-year lawyer, she was entrusted with the responsibility of being lead policy drafter for the Board of Regents’ Uniform Policy on PowerBased Violence/Sexual Misconduct. The policy was recently passed unanimously by the board.

Brianna said the experience was the pinnacle of her time at the Board of Regents.

“This was my first major project as a first-year lawyer who was only one year out of law school,” Brianna said. “To be entrusted to be lead policy drafter for a policy that would impact all public post-secondary colleges and universities in the state of Louisiana was a big responsibility, especially as a new lawyer.”

Today, Brianna is employed as a judicial law clerk for a federal magistrate judge. With her wide range of interests and areas of expertise, Brianna is exploring the next steps on her legal career path when her clerkship is complete. “I have a deepened interest in pursuing higher education law,” she said.

Away from work, Brianna enjoys taking walks and listening to podcasts. “I am a huge fan of Brené Brown and all law-related podcasts,” she said.

“I also enjoy experimenting in the kitchen and painting on occasion.”

A PAS S I O N FO R S E RV I C E L EA DS G R A D UAT E TO H A I T I Brooke Barisich was just 12 years old when Hurricane Katrina tore through St. Bernard Parish in August of 2005. Her family’s home and all of their possessions were lost, and friends and family members were scattered across several states.

Brooke’s family fled to Baton Rouge with not much more than the clothes on their backs.

Brooke said that becoming a “refugee” before her 13th birthday was traumatic. But even in the face of devastation, Brooke discovered the beauty of the human spirit. “Our family found ourselves on the receiving end of aid, and I experienced firsthand how life-changing and life-giving it can be when someone offers their time and skills to help you when you are at your lowest,” she said. “It was then I promised myself that when my family got back on track, I would live to return that favor and be that hand reaching out to someone in need.”

After graduating from SJA in 2012, Brooke studied at Clemson University. She graduated in 2016, then earned her doctorate of physical therapy from LSU Health Science Center-New Orleans in 2019. She moved to Austin, Texas, in 2020 to begin her career at an outpatient pediatric clinic.

But something was missing. As an undergraduate student at Clemson, Brooke had secured grants to perform two summer internships abroad. The fulfillment she gained from those experiences continued to beckon, and in January of 2021, she moved to Cap-Haitien, Haiti, to become the disability coordinator for Hope Health Action. She works with patients in one of the only neonatal intensive care units in Haiti, in an adult inpatient rehabilitation center and in a respite care center for children with special needs.

Brooke trains local therapists and childcare workers to further their education and enhance their skills in body mechanics, positioning, transferring and feeding the children. She also

visits the homes of children in the special needs center to evaluate accessibility needs, make home modifications and improve the carryover of therapy activities to the home environment.

She said she has been embraced by the local community and loves using her skills to help empower those who need it most. “It’s so easy to see God at work here,” she said. “Each time I can make a modification to improve a child’s life and a parent is beaming with gratitude, I see it. Each time a child gains a new skill or does something for the first time in therapy, I can see Him in the joy on their faces. The simplest things can bring everyone here so much delight, which truly encompasses that it’s not what you have but who you surround yourself with that brings joy.

Some of my happiest moments here have just been sitting with one of our children, talking and playing, while looking out at the most beautiful views of aqua blue beaches with the backdrop of the never-ending mountains.”

Brooke said she rejoices in the beauty of daily immersion in a culture defined by hard work, love of family and simplicity of lifestyle. “I absolutely love getting to learn and experience traditions, taste local foods, learn a new language and hear the stories of our friends in the community,” she said. “We live in such a giant world, and the ability to live internationally in a place completely different from your home is so eye opening, perspective changing and an amazing way to make the world seem more connected.” continued on next page

While simplicity is often the way of life on an island, there are challenges inherent in living and working in a third world country. Prime amongst them is a lack of resources. “Whether it is a wheelchair for a child with special needs, paint for a bedroom, foam to modify adaptive seating or even access to something as simple as a ball for children to play with, it is so difficult to source these items, and when we do find them, they come at great expense,” Brooke said. “Almost every day I face a problem here that would take minutes to solve in the States, but that is part of what our community faces.”

Brooke often relies on the skills she learned as a 12-year-old displaced from her home by a hurricane.

She adapts, perseveres and trusts in God’s plan for her life. She also remembers the Academy’s commitment to serving the dear neighbor as an expression of the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

“Each year at SJA, I completed the 50-plus hours of community service because I enjoyed it so much,” she said. “There were always so many opportunities to dedicate your time to others and give back, and I enjoyed volunteering for those events because I loved getting to spend quality time with the people we were serving. Going to high school in an atmosphere that encouraged and fostered service work so much was definitely one of my first steps on this journey.”

FO R M E R T EA M M AT ES CO N T I N U E TO S H A R E S P EC I A L MOM E N TS When Mallory Hitt was one of a handful of freshmen on the 2002-2003 St. Joseph’s Academy soccer team, she looked up to senior Emily Magee. Emily, in turn, took her young teammate under her wing, helping her learn the ropes and feel welcome.

Fast forward to 2015 and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Shreveport, where the former teammates would connect once again: Mallory was a med student doing her clinical rotations in pediatrics, and Emily was in residency as an obstetrician/ gynecologist.

Following her residency in Shreveport, Emily moved home to Baton Rouge and is now a partner in the private practice group of Schwartzenburg, Lafranca, Guidry, Chapman, Magee & Bourgeois Obstetrics and Gynecology. (She joins fellow Academy alumnae Dr. Cheree Schwartzenburg ’94 and Dr. Kristin Chapman ’95.)

Mallory would do her pediatrics residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, then return home to join the Baton Rouge Clinic.

When Mallory became pregnant with her second child and was looking for a doctor, it was only natural that she would reach out to Emily. “It just made the whole experience more fun and special to have someone I knew be there and help me along the way,” Mallory said. “As a freshman on the SJA soccer team, I looked up to Emily as a senior and then again as a medical student when she was a resident. She’s now a great

example of how to be a physician and a mother, and I value her insight in balancing those roles.”

Emily said she was thrilled to learn that Mallory had moved back to Baton Rouge upon completing her residency. “I was honored to serve as her physician during her pregnancy,” Emily said. “It was an honor and a joy to once again take care of her, but this time during one of life’s greatest moments (which is not to downplay the excitement of the state semifinal SJA soccer team!). I am also excited to have Mallory back in town so that I can refer new babies to her.”

Both doctors trace their decisions to pursue careers in medicine to their days at St. Joseph’s Academy.

As a biology honors student taught by Linda Messina, Emily placed second in the regional science and engineering fair with her project in the Health & Medicine category. “I am very thankful for the strong foundation that I received in not only education from SJA, but also in character and determination to follow my dreams and believe that I could succeed in anything,” Emily said.

Mallory first considered the medical field when she spent Job Shadowing Day at SJA with cardiologist Dr. Steven Gremillion. “St. Joseph’s gave me a solid foundation and the skills to succeed at an academically rigorous university and helped instill that spirit of service to others that is so important to a career in medicine,” she said.

SJA President Jan Rhorer Breen ’69 welcomed the families whose legacies are woven throughout the Academy’s history and said it was especially meaningful to gather as the Academy community in this, the Year of St. Joseph. She recognized the Coco-Hargrave family whose members have been a part of SJA for five generations and who trace their legacy to the early 1900s. She also recognized the class of 1957 as the most “mature” class in attendance and 1989 graduates as the class with the most members in attendance.

On Friday, July 9, the group gathered at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church for noon mass with Father Cleo Milano. He offered a blessing for the class and their family members to begin the weekend on a special note.

On Friday evening, the graduates enjoyed a girls’ night out at Beausoleil Coastal Cuisine in Baton Rouge. They shared memories and enjoyed appetizers courtesy of owner Stephen Hightower (Catholic High School class of 1991).

On Saturday, July 10, the alumnae were joined by their spouses as well as 1991 graduates of Catholic High School in the CHS Student Center. The event was catered by City Pork. Live music was provided

Members of the class of 2020 returned to campus on Thursday, August 5, for their long-awaited first reunion as graduates. Their traditional Six-Month Reunion, which would have been held in December of 2020, was cancelled due to COVID. The young alumnae gathered on campus for an Ice Cream and Snowball Social, catching up with their classmates and visiting with their former teachers and administrators.

Allen Breazeale Franklin ’64 visited campus recently to donate an SJA charm bracelet and an historic photograph.

The charm bracelet was a gift she received at a banquet held in downtown Baton Rouge, likely at the Capitol House Hotel (originally the Heidelberg Hotel). The banquet honored youngsters from across the city who were voted the most courteous students at their school.

Allen was in sixth grade at the time. Her teacher was Sister Renee. “I have always loved the bracelet, but the time has come for me to part with it,” Allen said.

Allen also brought a photograph of Sister Isabel Gosserand’s kindergarten class from 1951-1952. Allen was among the students pictured and one of six students who attended SJA from kindergarten through graduation. Since her college days at Louisiana State University, Liz Martin has enjoyed researching her family’s history.

Since she retired, she has been able to devote more time to her hobby.

Liz had long been told that her great-grandfather, Emile Hebert, was adopted, so she didn’t hold out hope of finding much information about that side of her family. But she learned that Emile’s parents had died young and that he had, in fact, been raised by his aunt and uncle. With further research, Liz discovered that Emile had married Aurelie Ory. In researching the Ory family, Liz stumbled upon an article in The Advocate dated June 27, 1893. The story mentioned closing exercises at St. Joseph’s Academy and listed her greatgrandmother, Aurelie, and her great-aunt, Virginia Ory. Liz reached out to SJA Archivist Sara Brignac, who was able to discover that the Ory sisters were boarders at St. Joseph’s Academy in the 1890s.

Aurelie was born in 1875, and Virginia was born in 1881. “I was surprised that they both attended the Academy,” Liz said. “The family lived on the Golden Gate Plantation in St. Gabriel at the time.

It would have been too far to commute on a daily basis.”

With further research, Liz was able to learn that the Ory family had survived an arduous journey to south Louisiana from Maryland. “They were one of the first families to clear the land on Highland Road and live on that property,” she said. “They also brought the Kleinpeter family here from Maryland.”

’57 SISTER HELEN PREJEAN, CSJ is one of three Lifetime Achievement Award winners bestowed for the first time by the Leadership Conference of Women Religious.

Sister Helen has spent more than 60 years in ministry. She is a best-selling author and leading advocate for the abolition of the death penalty. She began her prison ministry in 1981 and became pen pals with Patrick Sonnier, sentenced to die in the electric chair at Louisiana’s Angola State Prison for the murder of two teenagers. She visited him as his spiritual advisor and described her experiences in Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty, which was number one on the New York Times Best Seller List for 31 weeks. It was also developed into a major motion picture starring Susan Sarandon as Sister Helen. Her second book, The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions, was published in 2004. Her memoir, River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey, was published in 2019. Sister Helen is the founder of Survive, a victim’s advocacy group in New Orleans, and she continues to counsel not only inmates on death row but the families of murder victims, as well. She also facilitates education programs on capital punishment for colleges and high schools.

’69 JAN RHORER BREEN is among the 10 individuals who will be honored with the Emerge 2021 Baton Rouge Area Volunteer Activists award. Each year, the program honors a class of men and women who give of their time and talents to organizations across the local community, above and beyond volunteer requirements, for the betterment of the Greater Baton Rouge area. Jan, who is the president of St. Joseph’s Academy, has been actively involved in the community and has served on many professional, civic, educational

and church organizations. She was president of the Junior League of Baton Rouge and vice president of the Association of Junior Leagues International. She was honored as Sustainer of the Year for her service to the community and for developing the potential of women.

Jan was a founding board member of Young Leaders Academy, an organization that develops leadership abilities of young African-American males. She also helped in the formation and publicity of Miriam's House, a place for women who need housing and employment. Civic boards on which Jan has served include the Greater Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce, Chamber Leadership Alum Board (president) and the YMCA. She was president of the Public Relations Association of Louisiana and received the First Circle Award for outstanding work in public relations. She also served as president of the Louisiana Scholastic Press Association and is currently serving on the board of regents for Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University.

She was also a member of the Parish Council at St. Aloysius. The awards luncheon will be held on November 12 at The Crowne Plaza Hotel.

’86 COLONEL KRISTIN HEFLIN MCCOY officially retired from the U.S. Air Force on October 1, 2021, after 30 years of active duty service. During her career, Colonel McCoy had four overseas assignments (three in Germany and one in Okinawa, Japan), lived in six different states and deployed twice. In her final assignment, she was attached to the Ohio National Guard serving as their command inspector general.

’96 MELISSA SHAW ’85 LIZEL FLETES VARNADO ’85 Lizel Fletes Varnado’s daughter, Katherine, is the only East Baton Rouge Parish female resident to be accepted into the United States Naval Academy this academic year. She plans to study mechanical engineering and is a member of the Academy’s rugby team. Lizel is pictured here with her husband, Paul, and Katherine, who said that one of her favorite elements of the admissions process was getting a telephone call from U.S. Congressman Garret Graves to tell her she had been accepted.

has been named to the position of wellness educator in the St. Joseph’s Academy Counseling Center. Melissa will work to expand the school’s Social Emotional Wellness Program and integrate initiatives across the school community. She will provide education and training to students, parents, school personnel and counselors, collaborating also with community mental health providers. She is the director and clinician of Mind Spring Wellness Center in Prairieville with a small caseload of clients.

She recently served as a case manager for outpatient programs at Baton Rouge Rehab Hospital. She graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a bachelor of social work degree in 2002. She earned her master of social work degree from Louisiana State University in 2003. In her spare time, Melissa enjoys spending time with her husband and their four daughters and juggling a menagerie of animals.

Becky is an Ignatian-trained spiritual director, retreat facilitator and author. She leads a ministry that invites and accompanies people deeper in their walk with Christ through the practical tools of Ignatian spirituality. She is currently working with St. Joseph’s Academy in its mission integration initiatives.

is an undergraduate nursing instructor at Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University and serves as vice president of the newly formed Greater Baton Rouge chapter of the Louisiana Nurse Honor Guard. This volunteer organization of nurses recognizes those individuals who have dedicated their lives to the nursing profession.

The honor guard attends, in traditional nursing uniforms, funerals or memorial services of nurses to provide comfort to the family and let them, as well as the community, know the value of each nurse. Emily earned an associate of science in nursing from Our Lady of the Lake College in 2005, with an RN-BSN transition completed in 2015 at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She completed her master’s in nursing education degree at Western Governors University in 2019. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, spending time at the softball field with her oldest daughter and cheering her youngest on in swimming.

She is now a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner and is working at Premier Pediatrics of Manassas. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society. She lives in a suburb of Washington, D.C., with her husband and son.

’09 BRIENNE GRIFFIN opened the Law Office of Brienne Griffin on September 1, 2021. She will be working primarily in the area of family law. She previously spent five years working as a law clerk for the East Baton Rouge Parish Family Court. Brienne graduated from the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law School in May of 2016 and passed the bar exam in October of the same year. In 2016, she began working for the Honorable Judge Hunter Greene.

In 2017, she began working for the Honorable Charlene Charlet Day, whom she interned with for a year during law school. After four years with Judge Day and after her May 1, 2021, wedding to Justin Bice, she decided to open her law office.

Cori graduated from Tulane University with a degree in public health and tropical medicine and was a two-sport letter winner. She was an indoor volleyball All-American and beach volleyball player who participated in the first NCAA-sanctioned season. After graduating, Cori began her career in corporate health management with a small firm in Dallas.

She returned to Louisiana in August of 2018 to coach beach volleyball for Tulane. She returned to SJA in March of 2020 as the assistant admissions director before beginning her new role in July of this year. Cori also serves as an assistant volleyball coach for the Redstickers. Cori spends most of her free time outside, saying she finds it easiest to ground herself to God by admiring His creation. She particularly enjoys boating with her family, gardening, reading primarily historical fiction novels and being active.

has been named the counselor for the St. Joseph’s Academy class of 2022. She most recently served as the career counselor at Southeastern Louisiana University, providing career-related support to university students.

Prior to that, she served as the student services advisor with LSU Global, working with international students to help them enjoy a successful undergraduate experience.

Sarah graduated in 2014 from Louisiana State University with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a minor in psychology. She graduated from the University of New Orleans’ Master of Education in Counselor Education program with a concentration in mental health counseling. In her spare time, Sarah enjoys doing fun activities with her husband and 3-year-old daughter, traveling and watching live music.

is the recipient of the 2021 Louisiana Dental Association Student Award. She graduated in May of 2021 from the LSU School of Dentistry with a doctor of dental surgery. The student award is presented to a graduating senior who best represents and conducts his/her life in accordance with the ideals of the profession of dentistry and who has demonstrated a willingness to be involved with organized dentistry. The winner of the LDA Student Award is selected by the LDA president, the chairman of the LDA Council on Government Affairs and the LDA executive director. Bailey graduated from Louisiana State University in 2017 with a bachelor of science degree in biology and a business minor. Bailey is practicing at a private practice in Birmingham, Alabama.

has been promoted to senior consultant at Altman Solon, a global strategy consulting firm dedicated to the telecom, media and technology industries. Her responsibilities, including strategic problem solving and financial modeling, now expand to include management of analysts and consultants and a larger role in client interactions. In addition to her consulting role, Marianne is a member of Women at Altman Solon and the community service committee and serves as a coach for new employees. In the fall of 2020, she implemented diversity, equity and inclusion recruiting initiatives during an eight-week recruiting rotation, modifying the candidate review process, training interviewers and collaborating with affinity groups to achieve a more diverse and equitable recruiting pipeline.

’12 TIFFANY KELLY was selected to participate in the Techstars Sports Accelerator Class of 2021 Indy Class.

Her company, Curastory, based in Brooklyn, New York, allows creators to shoot and edit high-quality video, monetize shows and distribute to all of their video channels at no cost. The Techstars mentorship with startups is a 13-week accelerator program, which culminated with a Demo Day on September 2, where participants showcased their progress in front of investors from around the world. The adtech startup announced a $2.1 million seed round of funding, which followed a deal with the National Basketball Players Association. With the new funding, Curastory plans to expand from five full-time staffers to 10, growing its marketing, sales and engineering footprint. Tiffany is a 2016 honor graduate of Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida, in sports management and computer analytics. She is a former analytics associate at ESPN, where she was the first minority woman of color to be hired.

’13 KRISTEN SHAFFER MORAN is a maintenance engineer at The Dow Chemical Company in Plaquemine. She graduated in 2018 from Louisiana Tech University in mechanical engineering and married Kevin Moran, a 2013 graduate of Catholic High School, on May 25, 2018. They had been set up as a date for homecoming their senior year. After their wedding, they relocated to Longmont, Colorado, where Kristen worked for The JM Smucker Company, facilitating the startup of the Uncrustables (frozen peanut butter and jelly sandwich) manufacturing facility. Back in Louisiana, the Morans welcomed Vivienne Ida on July 10, 2021. Kristen says, “Vivienne is excited already to be a future Redsticker like her mom.”

’15 ADDISON HOLLIS CHASTAIN earned her juris doctor degree and graduate diploma in comparative law degree with honors in May 2021 from the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center. She served as managing editor of the Louisiana Law Review. She graduated from LSU in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in political science as a University Medalist. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. Addison is continuing her studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where she is pursuing a master of science degree in information studies with the goal of becoming a law librarian. Her work as a teaching assistant in law school classes led her to realize that she is called to be an educator. As a law librarian, she will teach legal research classes to first-year law students and advanced legal research classes to upperclassmen. In her spare time, Addison enjoys reading fiction novels or trying out a new cake recipe.

is in her final year at Fordham University, Lincoln Center, studying to earn her master’s degree in social work. The Fordham Graduate School of Social Work was awarded $1.9 million in federal funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration as part of a project called PIPELINE for Youth Health. The 2021-2022 school year is the first of five years for the PIPELINE program. Allie was selected in the inaugural class of 27 masters and doctoral candidates to become a student fellow and receive grant money to continue her studies at Fordham. Those selected will participate in a training program consisting of specialized courses, field work and speakers that prioritizes prevention, integrated care and health equity for underserved youth in New York City. In addition to being part of the PIPELINE program, Allie began her specialist (final) year field study at Bellevue Hospital in New York City in the Outpatient Addiction Center.

Why Should You Include a Charitable Gift in Your Will (or Living Trust)?

CO N G R AT U L AT I O N S TO S JA’S A DVA N C E D P L AC E M E N T A N D N AT I O N A L M E R I T S C H O L A R S One hundred forty-two St. Joseph’s Academy graduates (class of 2021) and current seniors earned AP Scholar Awards for 2021 in recognition of their exceptional achievement on college-level Advanced Placement (AP) Program exams. These outstanding scholars earned credit at Louisiana colleges and universities as well as most four-year schools in the United States.

SJA had 40 AP Scholar with Distinction award recipients. They earned an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. There were 23 recipients of AP Scholar with Honor awards. They earned an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. SJA had 79 AP Scholar award recipients. They received scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

In 2021, 560 tests were taken by 339 SJA students, and 282 (or 83 percent) of those students scored at least a 3 or higher on one of their tests.

Additionally, six St. Joseph’s Academy seniors were recognized as semifinalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Another 10 seniors were named commended students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million to be offered next spring. Approximately 95 percent of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

To enhance social/emotional support to better meet the needs of all students, SJA has hired Melissa Shaw ’96 in the new role of wellness educator in the Counseling Center.

resiliency and enhance coping skills so they can better manage the pressures of today. By having more frequent conversations about behavioral health, our students will be able to find balance in a life that is pulling them in so many different directions.”

As wellness educator, Melissa will provide education and training to students, parents, faculty and staff for navigating the challenging social/emotional issues that high school students encounter.

She will focus on increasing emotional health and wellness for students as the foundation of identity, self-care and selfevolution.

Melissa is creating individualized, grade-specific educational plans.

Freshmen will learn about time management, transitioning to high school, implementing healthy habits, stress management, friendship, how anxiety or depression presents physically and healthy coping mechanisms. Sophomore-level plans include self-awareness, selfesteem, relationships and further education on mood disorders. Juniors will explore boundaries, communication, conflict resolution and self-care. Seniors will be offered education on adjusting to change, practical ways to not compound problems, campus safety and current societal stressors. Future plans may also include the creation of a Wellness Club, presentations on social/emotional wellness for parents and faculty/staff, guest speakers and lunch hour pop-ups to increase access to information.

“The need for mental health education has never been greater,” Melissa said. “Adolescence is deemed a crucial transitional stage that many can recall being hard for them or someone they know.

Morphing physically and stretching socially while also juggling school, home, work and/or extracurricular obligations is taxing to most. If this time in life was not already difficult, our young women are now growing up in a social media-driven world that provides a cloak of anonymity that can be cruel and filters that distort reality. Self-doubt, a normal part of development, can be exacerbated to unhealthy levels. The stressors of doing it all, appearing picture perfect and implementing continued unrealistic expectations have driven up the rates of anxiety and depression for teenagers and adults. Our mind’s general intelligence does not operate outside of our emotional intelligence. Mental health education makes perfect sense, as we are a whole being, and addressing it at a pivotal point of development is smart.”

Melissa is a licensed clinical social worker who works with adolescent clients. As the mother of four daughters, she is keenly aware of the need for fostering holistic wellbeing. S JA ST U D E N TS H E L P H E A LT H CA R E , R ESTAU R A N T I N D UST R I ES T H R O U G H B R A N SW E R T H E CA L L In the spring of 2020, local attorney Shannon Hultberg watched as the COVID pandemic gained a foothold in her hometown of Baton Rouge. She was especially aware of the struggles faced by overwhelmed healthcare workers and local restaurants and wanted to do something in support of both industries.

She approached friend Kathryn Rothkamm Gill, SJA class of 1987 and an employee of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, and the two brainstormed ideas.

They decided to establish a nonprofit organization they dubbed BR Answer the Call. They created a GoFundMe page and solicited donations, and they reached out to area restaurants about buying meals they could then deliver free of charge to medical workers and first responders.

Several times a week, Shannon and Kathryn delivered hundreds of meals to hospitals and medical facilities throughout the region. Often, the grateful recipients cried, expressing heartfelt appreciation for the kindness of strangers as they struggled with grueling hours and the emotional toll of caring for COVID patients.

The spring of 2021 saw the easing of mitigation requirements. Businesses reopened, including restaurants, and hospitals saw a downtick in the number of COVID patients. The pandemic, it

appeared, was in retreat, and BR Answer the Call made its last deliveries. But with the rise of the Delta variant, Shannon and Kathryn were back in business.

This time, Shannon’s daughter Catherine, a junior at St. Joseph’s Academy, and several of her friends are involved. “When we resumed deliveries in August, Catherine said, ‘Let’s get students involved with making care bags,’” Shannon said.

“It has sparked a movement of many SJA girls volunteering their time to make posters and care bags for delivery along with the meals. Just today, five more moms reached out about their daughters wanting to participate. It says a great deal about what SJA embodies and teaches these girls.”

The care bags contain personal items including face wipes, granola bars, hydration packets, chap stick and hand sanitizer. Deliveries also include personal notes and posters, which many healthcare workers hang in their eating areas as a reminder that they are loved and appreciated by the communities they serve.

“It feels great to give back in some way to those frontline healthcare workers who sacrifice so much for us daily,” Catherine Hultberg said. “It really means a lot to me and my friends because it puts into perspective how we really are all in this together. My friends and I hope that even giving back a little and rallying the community can make all the difference in the world.”

Junior Shobe Manuel said the smiles and heartfelt thanks that meet each delivery are especially meaningful. “Healthcare workers have said, ‘Y’all made our day!’ or ‘Thank you for thinking of us! It warms my heart,’” she said. “I feel grateful for this opportunity to help raise the morale of the people on the front line of fighting COVID. Healthcare workers have been very generous with their time to ensure the good health of our community, and we cannot thank them enough.”

Junior Avery Bruce said she was grateful for the opportunity to serve those who are doing so much for others. “Knowing that these meals make their days a little brighter is very comforting to me,”

she said. “These amazing men and women continue to fight the pandemic and are doing all they can to keep us healthy and safe. This was a wonderful experience that I hope I can continue to take part in.”

Junior Catherine Hardouin said her first delivery to the ICU at Our Lady of the Lake was an eyeopening experience. “Just meeting all the amazing individuals who were working and seeing their happiness was truly the nicest thing I had ever seen,” she said. “One nurse came up to me and said that she appreciates the effort from the bottom of her heart because it is helping them get through this tough time. The night before a delivery, we pack up the sacks, and that can feel like it takes a long time, but I could easily push through knowing all these workers have done so much. I enjoyed working with my fellow sisters to just give back and put a smile on the faces of our communities’ hardest workers.”

LHSAA State Powerlifting Meet on March 24, 2022.

SJA now competes in all 12 of the female sports sanctioned by the LHSAA.

SJA’s eSports team was established in the spring of 2021 and competed against gamers from across the country.

In its inaugural season, the SJA team competed as a member of the High School eSports League, fielding an Overwatch Team and a Rainbow SIX Siege Team.

In the fall of 2020, then-sophomores Emma Evans and Shelby Soileau visited with SJA Athletic Director Dorinda Beaumont to inquire about starting a powerlifting team. Beaumont approached the school’s administration and was given the green light to move forward. A survey was sent to the student body to gauge interest, and Beaumont reached out to former colleague Steve Baronich, past president of the Louisiana High School Powerlifting Association and a member of the organization’s hall of fame, to discuss the logistics of starting a program.

In advance of season two, the eSports team held tryouts, which enjoyed a large turnout. Rosters of both the Overwatch and Rainbow SIX Siege teams are full, and there’s a full slate of alternates for each. Both teams have now notched their first wins in league competition.

While the numbers of individuals who participate in competitive video game play has exploded, the vast majority of gamers are male. While an estimated 45 percent of both adolescent girls and boys play video games, research shows that girls tend to shy away from the competition arena.

John Richardson, SJA’s co-director of technology, was approached by Principal Stacia Andricain and Athletic Director Dorinda Beaumont about establishing an eSports team. He jumped at the chance and now serves as its coach. “The research clearly shows that there are many positive benefits to eSports, including the enjoyment of competition, problem solving and social interaction,” he said. “Colleges are even offering scholarships to eSports competitors.”

SJA’s eSports room, located in the school library, features high-end desktop gaming computers, gaming keyboards, gaming mice, gaming monitors, chairs and gaming headsets. The dedicated space provides a state-of-theart environment for team practices and league-play competition. SJA applied for and received grant money to equip the room.

Team members especially enjoy erasing stereotypes that girls can’t be successful in the gaming arena, Richardson said. “So far, we haven’t come across another all-girls team,” he said. “We enjoy being on the cutting edge in this exciting activity.”

Powerlifting has been added to SJA’s lineup of Louisiana High School Athletic Association-sanctioned sports.

Beaumont next contacted Catholic High School, which has a powerlifting team, for advice. She then spoke with powerlifting coach Matt Shelton, who agreed to also coach the SJA team. The girls will train at CHS and will compete against female teams from across the state.

“I’m really excited to see the girls thrive in powerlifting,” Shelton said. “Powerlifting is a great sport, and it will push the girls further than many thought they could go. I’m excited to see this become a part of the SJA experience. This opportunity for the girls is a unique one, and I’m really looking forward to seeing them take this program to the same level of excellence that other SJA programs achieve.”
