On the Cover: Creatively dealing with COVID-19 restrictions, the St. Joseph’s Academy class of 2021 participated in the annual Senior Service Day. Among the activities were a virtual bingo bash for guests in the day shelter of St. Vincent de Paul; collecting essential items to fill backpacks for the homeless; and baking cookies for St. Vincent de Paul to include in lunches served to the hungry in the local community. We live our lives in moments and days. Feel the moments of real joy in your life and cherish these moments. Take each day as a joyous, sunrise gift from God to love and serve others. God is a God of the present. What are you going to do with the gift of a new day?

OUR PURPOSE

in Life

As we enter this new year, we know there are new beginnings, new resolutions and new starts to life. In these moments of reflection, we need to look at our purpose in life, what God has called us to do. This awareness becomes even more pronounced with a loss of a loved one. When we step back and ask, “Did they achieve God’s plan?” we discover how our loved ones lived every day fulfilling God’s purpose for them. How wonderful to know that love and service were the thread of their lives when God called them.

We are the architects of our lives. Are we on the road that God intended for us, and are we becoming the best version of ourselves? We have been given the gift of days and years to fulfill our purpose in life. How do we take the steps every day to embody the love and service that is part of God’s plan?

Let life unfold and find the grace in the day and the peace of the moment. God is always in the moment, difficult or easy, joyful or painful. God is where you are and when you are there. Do not worry about the past or the future. Live the moments of time with friends and loved ones, talking and laughing, experiencing new opportunities, walking, comforting others, developing new connections, serving the dear neighbor. Love, laugh, grow, pray, smile, cry, give, be grateful, be present. Reflect on your story and how you can make the next chapters in your life meaningful in fulfilling God’s purpose for you.

Live with hope.

God wants to bring us someplace even better. Hope includes an openness to wait for the promise to come, even though we never know when, where or how this happens. Hope is having unlimited faith in God who is with us every step of the way. Choose to hope that something is happening for us that is far beyond our own imaginings. Let God define your life. When we choose to hope, we trust that life is precious and meaningful in the eyes of God. He will guide us on our journey.

Be open to change.

Change is a part of growing. God is inviting us to a deeper transformation. There will be opportunities for change and growth in ways we cannot imagine. Trust that God has something new, something beyond your own expectations that will happen to you. Change is a way of saying goodbye to old and facing a new, unfamiliar situation. We are here to live fully, love fully and to have great adventures in life. We will experience sad moments, but they can be the seeds of our best moments. Be open to new ways. Be optimistic about each day, and create a life filled with God’s purpose for us.

Change can enrich us by the lessons we learned at every stage of our lives. Endings are also new beginnings. As Henri Nouwen says, “Underneath all the ups and downs and changes in life, there flows a solid current of joy.”

Seek gratitude.

Let us be grateful for what we have and who we are.

Happiness is found in the fine art of gratitude. Our small acts of kindness, every gesture of love, every word of forgiveness, every moment of joy and peace will multiply as we give and serve others. Live each day full of promises, for there are gifts given to us each day. Open our minds and hearts to the voice within us showing us new beginnings. When we live and love, we develop wonderful memories. Cherish the memories and be grateful for the opportunities.

Find the graces in each day, for everything is unfolding exactly as it is supposed to.

As we begin this new year, let us remember that our life is filled with new opportunities. Let us be optimistic about each day and create a life filled with God’s purpose to love and serve one another.

Value every moment and make the most of life, filled with happiness and new sources of meaning. Let us remember that our lives touch so many other lives with our acts of love, kindness, forgiveness, generosity, service, joy and peace.

Mother Teresa said, “Life is an achievement.” Search for the beauty in what life is. Know that we are called to love and to help mankind. Each day, walk a path of purpose and accept God’s plan in life. He will lead you.

Find God in prayer.

Prayer opens our hearts and allows us to be open to God’s will. If in prayer we understand that each day given by God is a call, our hearts will accept everything. In prayer, we discover that God is always with us and will be present every step of the way. Trust in God’s work and the spirit that is within us. Life is a walk of faith. “Let me be the light; let me be joy, let me know that I am the reflection of You wherever I am; and wherever I go.” Gerald Jampolsy

SJA COMMUNITY Linda Thompson has established the Katie Thompson ’16 Scholarship in the SJA Foundation. Her reason for doing so was two-fold: She wanted to honor her daughter as well as support the mission of St. Joseph’s Academy by providing tuition assistance to deserving students.

“I believe that every student should have the educational equivalent of the academic excellence that my daughter received at St. Joseph’s Academy,” Linda said.

Two new scholarships have been established in the St. Joseph’s Academy Foundation to provide tuition assistance to deserving young women and their families. Another three scholarships held in the Foundation are now fully endowed and perpetual, providing tuition assistance to young women whose families could not otherwise afford the full cost of an Academy education.

The St. Joseph’s Academy Board of Directors has established the Walter Louis Comeaux II Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established in celebration of Walter’s life and good works.

Walter was born on October 6, 1951, and passed away on December 1, 2020, after a brief battle with COVID-19. A lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, he graduated from University High School in 1969.

He graduated from Louisiana State University in 1973 and Loyola Law School in 1975. Following a brief practice in New Orleans, he returned to Baton Rouge to focus his practice on real estate.

He founded Commerce Title & Abstract Company in 1983, handling thousands of real estate transactions over the years. Today, it is the largest title company in the city.

Linda said she values the education her daughter received at the Academy because it gave her the tools and critical-thinking skills needed to make the important decisions that impact her life. Among the life skills Katie learned are compassion and a dedication to loving and serving “the dear neighbor,” her mother said. “She also learned independence, confidence and leadership skills to be a successful young woman in a fastpaced, global economy,” Linda said. “Academy students graduate with a strong knowledgebase that gives them an edge in their careers.”

Walter was a devout Catholic, a man of prayer and faith and a man for others. His generosity, service, kindness and love were experienced by all who knew him and many who did not.

An avid wine collector, Walter loved to travel to wineries all over the world. He went scuba diving in the Adriatic Sea, Thailand and Cuba, and he climbed Mount Blanc in France and to the base camp of Mt. Everest and Mt. Kilimanjaro. He loved fishing, LSU football, supper clubs and Saturday morning breakfasts with his friends.

Katie is a May 2020 graduate of the Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University with degrees in entrepreneurial business and graphic design. She is employed as a graphic designer at Madden Media in Tucson, Arizona.

Walter is survived by his wife, Jan Rhorer Breen, president of St. Joseph’s Academy and a 1969 graduate. He is also survived by his children, Neila Stone (Calvert), Walter Louis Comeaux III, Brian Comeaux and Allyson Comeaux Saia ’01 (Sam); grandchildren Neila Camille ’24, Andrew and Ollie Stone; Julie, Amelia, Walter Louis IV and Madeline Comeaux; Anna Frances and Graves Saia; siblings Neila Comeaux Eckler ’60, Dr. Clifford Comeaux Jr., Deanie Comeaux Bahan ’64 and Ann Comeaux Legleu ’68 (Tommy); and nieces and nephews Michael Eckler, Patrick Eckler, Clifford Charles III, Elisa Clare Comeaux Babin ’90, Remy Gross, Christen Legleu ’93 and Catherine Legleu White ’02.

“My Academy education was much more than just knowledge of facts and chapters from textbooks,” Katie said. “I learned confidence, perseverance, empathy and so many other useful skills that have ultimately led me to where I am today. SJA molds

women to be leaders and trailblazers, and I will forever be grateful for that.”

In addition to honoring her daughter through the scholarship in her name, Linda said she was motivated by the testimony of an alumna who was the recipient of tuition assistance. The young woman told Linda that the ability to attend St. Joseph’s Academy was life-changing.

“I want to help open those doors for students who may not otherwise be able to attend,” she said.

Katie said she is extremely grateful for her mother’s gesture.

“St. Joseph’s Academy will always hold a very special place in my heart,” Katie said. “I feel blessed to have a scholarship in my honor. It is surreal to be honored in such a tremendous way.”

The newly endowed scholarships are The Linda Fryoux Harvison ’66 Scholarship, The Roberta Fick CYO Memorial Scholarship and The Class of 1984 Kay Hutcherson and Merle Wilson Memorial Scholarship.

Linda Fryoux Harvison and her husband, Jerry, established The Linda Fryoux Harvison ’66 Scholarship as Linda prepared to retire as principal of St. Joseph’s Academy at the end of the 2014-2015 academic year. The scholarship pays tribute to the sacrifices made by her parents to ensure that Linda and her sister, Janice Fryoux Wray ’63, received an Academy education.

Her mother sewed habits for the Sisters to help pay tuition. Later, as parents of students in Catholic schools, Linda and Jerry understood and appreciated the sacrifices that can come with providing such a gift.

Linda attended the Academy from kindergarten through graduation and would spend 32 years as a teacher, moderator, administrator and principal of her alma mater. Her commitment and loyalty to the Academy were faithfully expressed over many years.

Throughout her years at SJA, Linda steadfastly stated that “it’s all about the girls,” and the scholarship in her name underlines this philosophy by benefitting deserving young women.

After retiring in 2015, Linda and Jerry moved to French Settlement, where they enjoy fishing, boat riding and watching beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the Amite River. They also enjoy traveling with family and friends. Linda especially enjoys an annual travel adventure with her granddaughter, Lucy Claire.

Linda helped establish the Grandparents Association at The Dunham School and has served in various capacities, including board president, vice president and secretary.

She is secretary-treasurer of her neighborhood homeowners’ association and is a lector at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in French Settlement.

“I am grateful that the scholarship, being funded, will help young ladies who desire an Academy education,” Linda said. “I value the sacrifice my parents made for me, and I know this scholarship will help other parents who desire this for their daughter. A Catholic education is a life-long gift.”

Monica Derbes Gibson ’84 established The Class of 1984 Kaye Hutcherson and Merle Wilson Memorial Scholarship to honor her late classmates as outstanding members of the Academy community. Kaye is remembered as a talented singer, musician and composer as well as an outstanding student of French. Merle was warm, elegant and kind with the gifts of insightful listening and a strong work ethic. Both young women overcame obstacles to become popular members of their class. They embodied the values of SJA and used their God-given gifts to make the world around them better.

The Roberta Fick CYO Memorial Scholarship was established in 2016 with funds from the estate of Ms. Roberta Fick, who wished to provide monies “to help children go to Catholic school.” Ms. Fick, who died in 1999, attended St. Joseph’s Parochial School, one year at St. Joseph’s Academy and graduated from Baton Rouge High School. She retired as a legal secretary in 1975.

A devout Roman Catholic and member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Ms. Fick was an active volunteer with the Diocese of Baton Rouge. Funds from the Fick estate were originally held by the Baton Rouge Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), which was disbanded in July 2016.

Former CYO Director Denny Braud, CYO Assistant Bonnie McCoy and Attorney D.R. Atkinson provided the leadership which resulted in the establishment of this scholarship.

The scholarship in her memory will continue her legacy of serving others by enabling young women to receive the gift of a Catholic education.

Fully endowed scholarships and funds are perpetual because only earned interest income, not the principal, is used. Donors may continue to contribute even after a scholarship or fund is fully endowed because the larger the corpus, the greater the earnings available for use. NEWEST CSJ ASSOCIATES CELEBRATED

at Founders’Day Mass

The newest Associates of the Congregation of St. Joseph were welcomed and celebrated during the Founders’ Day Mass and Associates’ Commitment Ceremony on October 13 at St. George Catholic Church.

Of the 14 new associates, five are graduates of SJA. They are Amy Andrews ’06, Fallon Gerald ’16, Linda Anzelmo Hipwell ’68, Mary Dardenne Michel ’67 and Mary Perrault Williams ’79. SJA Mission Advancement Director Meg Gerald, the mother of Rainey ’13 and Fallon ’16 Gerald, is also a new associate. Those honored in October have completed the inquirers process, which involves a year of monthly meetings, prayer, discussion and small-group reflection.

CSJ Associates are individuals who desire to live in union with God, with one another and with all creation.

In response to God’s great love and with mutual support, Associates are deeply engaged in living the Congregation’s mission of unity and inclusive love of God and the dear neighbor without distinction.

Fallon Gerald said becoming an associate was a natural “next step” in her lifelong relationship with the Sisters of St. Joseph. “Growing up in a Catholic school, there was always a Sister around the corner, and once I went to SJA, I knew my love for the Congregation ran deep,” she said. “But when I got to college, I felt a bit lost. When Sister Ily Fernandez talked to me about the associate program, I knew it was a perfect fit for me. I would be continuing my path with the Congregation in a more permanent way. Becoming an associate is important to me because I further the reach of the charism the Sisters teach every day. I have a daily reminder to live and work ‘that all may be one.’ Being an associate keeps me grounded to the Lord, and it really solidifies that I am a certified super fan of those amazing women in the CSJ.”

Like her daughter, Meg Gerald said the Sisters of St. Joseph have been a part of her life for years. Meg remembers Sister Katie Brogdon, the disciplinarian at Catholic High School, sitting next to her at a CHS-Jesuit football game, which was her second date with Don Gerald, whom she would marry.

“From that first encounter more than 30 years ago and still today, the Sisters have been in and around my life molding and shaping me to be more,” she said. “Becoming a CSJ Associate allows me to answer the call to be more. I am honored to have the opportunity to carry the CSJ mission and charism forward through a lens of love that all may be one.”

Meg said that sharing the formation process with her daughter was especially joyful. “The opportunity to share our faith and the desire to be an associate has made this journey all the more special,” she said.

Reverend Paul Yi was the presider for the mass and commitment ceremony. Former Mission Advancement Associate Director Sister Joan Laplace, CSJ, and SJA theology faculty member Hugo Andricain, also an associate, were among the participants. Sherry Foret Riggs ’62 helped plan the liturgy and commitment ceremony. Sister Lucy Silvio, CSJ ’59 was one of the mentors for the new associates.

The newest associates join several current and former faculty and staff members who are CSJ Associates: Principal Stacia Andricain, theology teacher Hugo Andricain, Facilities Director David James, Spanish teacher Ghedy Matus, theology teacher Dana Murray, fine arts teacher Stacy Rennhoff, Facilities Director Linda Thompson, former Admissions Director Sheri Gillio, former science teacher Vicki LaPlace, former theology teacher Judy Lavergne and former PE teacher Holly Randow.

Sister Joan Laplace Appointed to Diocesan Role The Most Rev. Michael G. Duca, Bishop of Baton Rouge, recently appointed Sister Joan Laplace, CSJ, as liaison to consecrated men and women in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. Sister Joan’s duties include several collaborative roles which will allow Bishop Duca greater dialogue with the men and women who serve in the parishes and apostolates in Baton Rouge.

Working with pastors, Sister Joan will coordinate the annual Retirement Fund for Religious Collection every December to benefit consecrated persons who have served the Church so generously. She will prepare the annual Jubilee Mass celebration for consecrated persons celebrating 25 or more years of religious service. She will serve as Bishop Duca’s representative in matters regarding consecrated life in the Diocese of Baton Rouge, and she will be available to individual members of congregations and institutes as a resource for addressing specific needs.

“I was surprised when I viewed the diocesan website to learn how many orders are represented in our diocese,” Sister Joan said. “I look forward to having the opportunity to work with the many different religious – Sisters and Brothers – serving here.”

Sister Joan retired in June of 2019 after 55 years in Catholic education, 35 of which were spent at St. Joseph’s Academy. Her ministry at SJA began in 1964. She taught

English, French and religion. From 1966 to 1968, she served as assistant principal and counselor, introducing the first formal guidance program at the high school. She was named principal in 1968, a position she held for 11 years.

Sister Joan spent 1979 as the public relations director at SJA-New Orleans, directing internal and external communications as the Sisters of St. Joseph closed the school after 125 years. She returned to Baton Rouge in 1981 to join SJA’s guidance department and establish a development program. She served as SJA’s first development director, overseeing a capital campaign in the mid-1980s that resulted in the construction of the Activity Center and renovation of the former gym into today’s library.

In 1991, Sister Joan joined Brother Martin High School in New Orleans as community relations director, a post she held for 15 years before returning to SJA on August 1, 2006, to direct the development office, now Mission Advancement. She retired as the department’s associate director on June 27, 2019.

Sister Joan continues to be active in the community. In addition to her work with the Diocese, she has been a member of the board of directors at St. Vincent de Paul since 2012 and a committee member of the Mirabeau Water Garden project since 2008. Additionally, she serves on the St. Joseph’s Academy board of directors.

STICKER SCRAMBLE

Celebrates Eighth Year

The 8th annual Sticker Scramble was held October 26 at TopGolf of Baton Rouge. Golfers enjoyed two rounds of TopContender golf, lunch, event games and beverages.

The yearly event benefits the St. Joseph’s Academy Dads’ Club with funds used for campus-wide enhancements.

“Following the spring cancellation of the 2020 Sticker Scramble, the fall golf tournament raised almost $10,000,” said Mission Advancement Director Meg Gerald, who is moderator of the Dads’ Club. “It was so nice to finally be able to gather our alums, parents and friends together for a great cause. The day was a huge success, and thanks to the Sticker Scramble committee and TopGolf, the Dads’ Club will now be able to give back to the school, directly impacting each and every student.”

The scramble was played following TopGolf regulations pertaining to COVID. Capturing first place was the team of Scott Ritter, Steve Maher and Blayne McRae. Each winner received a $350 club fitting from Club Champion and a trophy made in the Andrea Clesi McMakin ’74 STEM Lab. Second place went to the team of Mark Emonet, Craig DeJean and Damon Duhon. Team members took home $100 Visa gift cards and trophies made in the STEM Lab. The team of Patrick Dooley, Chris Stogner and Scott Morin finished third and won $50 Visa gift cards and trophies from the STEM Lab. Winning the Alumnae Cup were Julie Brabetz Perrault ’91, Corrie Maddox Hester ’91 and Sarah Fautheree. Each received a $100 Visa gift card and trophy.

ALUMNA PUBLISHES MEMOIR IN CELEBRATION OF SON’S LIFE It was Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 25, 2010. Mary T Heffron deBrueys and her husband Jim were in Little Rock, Arkansas, where the LSU Tigers would take on the Razorbacks that Saturday afternoon. The excitement and anticipation of an SEC football showdown came to a crashing halt with a telephone call and the unfathomable news that their son James was one of five people on a boat that had gone missing while en route to the main island of the Marshall Islands chain.

Ten years later, Mary T published a book, Jambos with James, in memory of her son who died a month before his 23rd birthday. Having just graduated from LSU, James was a volunteer with WorldTeach and was teaching English to impoverished children living on a remote island atoll called Arno in the village of Bikarej.

Jambos with James (Friesen Press) is a collection of pictures, stories and letters James wrote to family and friends from the Marshall Islands. A prolific writer, James’ letters are funny, loving, observant and kind, giving readers an intimate look at a young man determined to make a difference in the world. Jambos is the Marshallese word for walks, which James enjoyed with his students and island family.

“Writing Jambos with James has been cathartic and has helped provide a sense of peace,” Mary T said. “I continue to feel that way every day, although the emotionality of it all can catch me at any time. I also find myself every day reminded of the gratitude that I have for life and for people here who surround us and hold us up. Both Jim and I would tell you without hesitation that faith and our strong belief in the

The book made the Friesen Press bestseller’s list in its first month of publication. “The response has been overwhelming, as many family members and friends – including classmates and schoolmates from SJA – have responded by purchasing the book and by giving me positive, encouraging and kind feedback,” Mary T said.

Born in Victoria, Texas, Mary T moved to Baton Rouge as a youngster and attended Country Day School, St. Aloysius, St. Joseph’s Academy and LSU. She earned a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology in 1976 and a master of communication disorders from the LSU Medical Center in New Orleans in 1977.

Mary T and Jim have been married for 43 years. They raised five children and have six grandchildren.

She is the founder and director of Peer+Plus, a diagnostic and tutorial service in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Peer+Plus provides workshops and presentations to faculties, students and parents as well as tutorial and study skill remediation for students of all ages in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans areas. She is the co-author of LinguiSystems: 125 Ways to Be a Better Student, a study skills book.

Mary T is a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church where she serves as a eucharistic minister. She facilitates a grief group, Cracked Pots … Blessed & Broken, for mothers who have lost adult children. She also presents to audiences on dealing with grief from a faith perspective.

IN MALE-DOMINATED COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE FIELD In the historically male-dominated field of commercial real estate, Malloy Ryan Peterson is making her presence known. This 1994 graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy is senior vice president of development at Selig Development Company in Atlanta, specializing in urban mixed-use projects.

Selig has a portfolio of more than 15 million square feet of retail, industrial, mixed-use and office properties throughout the Southeast. Malloy is the lead development executive for The Works, Selig’s 80-acre, adaptive mixed-use project in Atlanta. The Works is the largest adaptive reuse development in the city and includes retail and entertainment space, office space, residences, hotel rooms and greenspace.

“Real estate development allows for a very tangible display of results,” Malloy said. “Nothing feels quite like watching the community enjoy something designed and built by your team.

However, I do thoroughly enjoy the planning, design and branding process. Those activities allow for the most creativity, so that’s my favorite part of the job.”

Prior to joining Selig, Malloy spent 13 years with Carter, a real estate development firm in Atlanta.

There, she specialized in complex, large-scale, urban mixed-use public-private partnerships, including The Banks, a $600 million project in Cincinnati, Ohio, which won a prestigious NAIOP Impact Award; City Springs, a $300 million city center in Atlanta, which won the ULI Award for Excellence in Town Center Development; and Summerhill, the redevelopment of 70 acres

including Turner Field and the former Centennial Olympic Stadium, which won the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Best in Atlanta Real Estate Awards Overall Deal in 2017.

In recognition of her work spanning two decades, Malloy was named an “Atlanta Power Women in Commercial Real Estate” by Bisnow and a “Woman to Watch” by the national publication Real Estate Forum.

Globe Street named her as one of the top 12 female development professionals in the country in its 2020 edition of Women of Influence. She was a member of the inaugural 25-member class of women leaders in Urban Land Institute Women’s Leadership Institute. She was also recently honored by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as one of its Women Who Mean Business for 2020.

Key to her success are the leadership skills Malloy traces to her time at St. Joseph’s Academy. She served as vice president and president of the student body, gaining invaluable experience for what was to come. “I think anyone who has managed developments of this size and scope will say that the most critical role is keeping the development team all rowing in the same direction,” Malloy said. “When leading developments that involve hundreds of millions of dollars of invested capital, these teams can include hundreds of people.

While experience and technical competence are critical, active, frequent and clear communication and collaboration is the true key to success. Strong leadership is not optional.”

Malloy was introduced to the commercial real estate field when she decided to pursue her master’s degree at the Scheller College of Business at Georgia Tech University. She took a real estate seminar class, the only real estate class offered at the master’s level at the time.

“During each class, a different real estate executive came to talk to our class about his career, focus area and the developments he had and was completing,” Malloy said. “These were the civic leaders and executives I would read about in the Atlanta papers for their accomplishments in the industry. It became my favorite class. Before it was over, I wanted to join the commercial real estate industry.”

She earned her MBA in 2004 and intended to do just that, but the industry was in a recession, and jobs were unavailable. She joined a tech company and worked in a strategy role in its mergers and acquisitions department.

When the real estate industry bounced back two years later, she joined Carter.

“Working on large, impactful, mixed-use commercial real estate projects seemed like a better fit for my skillset and interests,” she said. “It required financial acumen, the ability to lead large teams, creativity and working collaboratively with stakeholders such as elected officials and neighborhoods.”

Malloy’s success is all the more significant given the makeup of the industry. Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Network reports that women hold just 27 percent of senior vice president, managing director and partner-level positions in the industry.

The real estate executives who spoke to the students in her favorite grad-school class at Georgia Tech were white males. In fact, she had never heard of a woman

working in the development field. “I’ve always loved the quote, ‘If you can see it, you can be it,’” Malloy said.

“Traditionally, women and minorities have not seen women or minorities in those roles, often keeping them from pursuing a career in the industry. Yet developments are frequented by visitors and shoppers of all races and sexes. Bringing diversity into the industry is the best way to innovate.”

As a result of her commitment to effecting change in her industry, Malloy invests significant time to mentoring women. She launched Selig’s internship program to foster the development of young professionals. She frequently serves as a guest speaker at a variety of events. And that MBA real estate class at Georgia Tech? Malloy volunteered to teach the course for two semesters.

“I have been blessed with the opportunity to do what I love while serving as an example, something I do not take lightly,” she said.

Malloy is active in the Atlanta community. A 2017 Leadership Atlanta graduate, she was appointed by the City Council and currently serves as chair of the City of Atlanta Development Impact Fee Advisory Committee.

She also serves on the board of directors for Midtown Improvement District, Upper Westside Community Improvement District, Georgia Institute of Technology Real Estate Board and the Northwest Community Alliance.

Malloy and her husband, Robert, have two sons: Trey, a freshman in high school, and Brant, who is in the seventh grade. Both of her sisters, Brady Ryan Rumph, SJA class of 1997, and Quin Ryan, a 2000 Academy graduate, also live in Atlanta. Their mother, Malloy Warren Liner ’69, visits often, “so our favorite thing is to get our families together,” Malloy said.

SJA, CHS CLASSES OF 1981

Bond over Volunteer Service They may have graduated from high school 40 years ago, but members of the St. Joseph’s Academy and Catholic High School classes of 1981 remain true to a pillar of their Catholic education: Community service is core to Catholic discipleship.

In the 10 years since they came together to celebrate their 30th reunion, these graduates have joined forces to benefit Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, SJA’s Sticker Stampede and the Colon Cancer Coalition’s Get Your Rear in Gear 5K. In 2016, they helped those devastated by the historic August flood, and in 2020, despite the restrictions in place because of COVID, they came together for service at the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Regardless of where the group shows up or the type of service work they do, their affection for one another is clear. For their day of service at the Food Bank, they wore matching black-and-white t-shirts featuring the logos of each school and the catchphrase Because We Like Each Other.

“The reason we came up with that saying is because when we had our group meetings every couple of months, people would ask us why we were doing this,” explained Stacy Root Koch ’81, a member of the core group. “Our reason is simple: It’s because we like each other.”

Carlos Padial ’81 agreed. “We feel like family, and we choose to be together,” he said.

While the graduates certainly enjoy gatherings such as class reunions, Lisa Westmoreland Collier ’81 said that coming together in service to others is especially meaningful. “There are things we can do to be together and enjoy each other’s company just as much as when we’re gathered socially,” she said.

Donna Stewart Melancon ’81 said the group’s reason for giving back to the community is simple: “It means a lot to us,” she said. “We’re raising our families here.”

Collier said that the annual service opportunities also foster friendships between classmates who may not have been close in high school. “I didn’t know a lot of the guys who are in the core group,” she said. “I tell my daughter all the time that the people you probably said 10 words to in high school may end up being a very close friend of yours 20 years from now. We all share a common bond, and I think there’s a certain connection and comfort.”

Throughout the history of both Baton Rouge schools, students have been taught the importance of serving the dear neighbor without distinction. Forty years after the classes of 1981 graduated, the lessons learned continue to resonate. “The key to happiness, which is our fundamental goal, is to serve others,” Padial said. “It’s in doing for other people and finding needs that gets you outside of yourself. It helps you learn to appreciate what you have when you meet people who don’t have what you do. When we go out to do stuff, and we’re doing it together to serve others, we’re experiencing happiness together.”

In mid-December of each year, the most recent St. Joseph’s Academy graduates gather on campus to celebrate their six-month reunion. Hosted by the Alumnae Association when the graduates are home for their Christmas break from college, the annual celebration features a pizza lunch and the opportunity to visit with one another, their former teachers and administrators and to pick up their yearbooks.

But as is the case with many traditions since last spring, the six-month reunion for the class of 2020 looked a bit different this year. Rather than being able to come to campus, the college freshmen arrived on campus between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., driving through the circle

Treasures TO SJA’S ARCHIVES

Gail Gaiennie, a 1966 graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy, donated several items that belonged to her grandmother, Elise Jackson. Elise attended St. Joseph’s Academy in 1891 and 1892. Gail donated three award medals, a class photograph and her grandmother’s school picture.

Ann Bahlinger Bernard, SJA class of 1977, donated dance cards that belonged to her father, Marion Bahlinger, a member of the Catholic High School class of 1942. Ann said that prior to a dance, Academy girls would sign up for a specific dance with their CHS counterparts, and the Sisters would present the dance cards to the boys upon their arrival. “My dad’s was always filled!” Ann shared.

Marion told his daughter that Monsignor Francis Gassler initiated the dances between the two schools. They were held in the CHS gymnasium on North Street. “Daddy said the CHS Brothers would decorate the gym for the dances,” Ann said. “He couldn’t remember if there was a band or just records playing. But it’s so cute how the girls signed up for dances. Thinking this process should come back in style!”

Among the members of the class of 1942 who signed Marion’s dance cards was Elizabeth (Betty) Klein, whom he would marry. Many of the girls included on Marion’s cards became lifelong friends. “They would get together with whomever was still living up until three or four years ago,” Ann said.

Suzette Fourrier Howe, a 1973 SJA graduate, donated a number of items, including playbills, copies of Student Prints and a graduation invitation and program. Also included was the handwritten class “prophecy,” which was copied using an old ditto machine.

The family of Anna Myhand, class of 1924, donated her graduation journal, which is a scrapbook from her senior year at St. Joseph’s Academy. The journal includes wonderful handwritten notes and intricate details about events which occurred throughout the year along with photographs. The journal itself is beautifully illustrated on the front cover and on each page.

The journal was delivered to Archives by Anna Michael Ieyoub, class of 2021. Anna Myhand was her great-grandfather’s sister.

ALUMNAE NEWS ’48 CATHERINE EATON DEVRIES, a retired registered nurse, recently purchased a townhome in Baton Rouge. She is enjoying the beautiful lake, green space and swimming pool. She worked in Houston and was active in several professional organizations. She reports that she is doing well and enjoying retirement.

’97 ELIZABETH ENGOLIO was reelected without opposition on July 24 to a second term as District Judge for the 18th Judicial District Court in Iberville, West Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee parishes.

She has served in this seat since April 1, 2016, and the new term is through 2026.

The 18th JDC is a court of general jurisdiction hearing criminal, civil, family and juvenile cases. Elizabeth has also been the Iberville Drug Court Judge, which is a volunteer position, since September of 2017. ’00 JILL CRONAN ADAMS is a commercial real estate appraiser, holding certified general licenses in Kansas and Missouri. She obtained her MAI and AI-GRS designations through the Appraisal Institute in 2019. In October 2019, she was promoted to SVP/Chief Appraiser at UMB Bank, headquartered in Kansas City. Current roles and responsibilities include maintaining compliance and current appraisal methods/techniques to ensure safe and sound practices and leading a team of appraisers who perform appraisal reviews and internal valuations for risk mitigation. She has been named president of the Kansas City Chapter of the Appraisal Institute for 2021 and is a member of the Central Exchange Emerging Leaders class. She resides in Prairie Village, Kansas, with her husband, Trent, and two young sons, Henry and Jack.

Whitney is the managing director of Stonehenge Capital. She leads Stonehenge Capital’s TaxCredit Services business line. She joined Stonehenge Capital in 2009 as a member of the legal team and was promoted to director of the Tax Credit Services team in 2014.

Under her leadership, the federal and state tax credit syndication practice flourished, and she was promoted to managing director in 2019 at the firm’s 20th anniversary meeting in Bluffton, South Carolina.

Recently, Whitney served as a special advisor to the Louisiana Economic Recovery Task Force, a legislative private sector advisory committee charged with developing comprehensive policy, legislation and regulatory recommendations to jumpstart the Louisiana economy and invest in the long-term recovery of the state.

’01 KODI COLLINS GUILLORY is one of three SJA graduates honored as a member of Business Report’s 2020 Forty Under 40 class.

Kodi is president of Sustainable Design Solutions, a womanowned engineering firm specializing in the design and implementation of civil works projects.

The company focuses on municipal, state and federal infrastructure development and maintenance. Services include the planning, design and management of water, wastewater, coastal, solid waste, transportation and remediation projects.

Kodi has a bachelor of science degree in biological engineering and a master of science in civil engineering. She was instrumental in critical work to sustain Louisiana’s coast during her time as a state project engineer. In 2019, she turned the dream of owning her own engineering firm into reality and, in a year’s time, has grown Sustainable Design Solutions into a full-service multidisciplinary engineering firm.

She is an active community volunteer, especially in mentoring and educating young students about STEM careers.

’03 LINDSEY RICHARD FAUVEAU will start her Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Baylor Scott & White in Dallas on August 1, 2021. She is a 2007 graduate of Louisiana State University and a 2012 graduate of Ross University. She completed general surgery residency in 2018.

She worked for Ochsner Health in Baton Rouge following training as a boardcertified general surgeon and looks forward to additional training to specialize in the field of breast cancer. She is an active member of the Louisiana State Medical Society and American Society of Breast Surgeons, as well as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. When not working, she enjoys spending time with family and friends. ’03 ANGELLE LAVERGNE TERRY was recently named a Capital City’s Finest honoree by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

She was among 21 young professionals recognized in 2020 for their leadership, professional successes and philanthropic spirit.

Angelle is a senior project architect at WHLC Architecture. She excels at balancing the complexities of large healthcare developments, where her project management and organizational skills are invaluable. She is involved during all phases of the design process through construction. In addition to healthcare, Angelle has worked on master planning, biomedical research, commercial, wellness, interior design and education projects. An active community volunteer, Angelle is a founding member and past president of the Rotaract Professionals of Baton Rouge, a young professionals’ organization affiliated with the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge. A graduate of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber’s Leadership Baton Rouge Program, Angelle serves as the representative from her class on the Leadership Baton Rouge Alumni Board. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects.

She graduated from Louisiana State University in 2009 with a bachelor of architecture degree. She was a member of Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society in Architecture & Allied Arts and the recipient of the School of Architecture’s Alpha Rho Chi Medal for the graduating student showing affinity for leadership, service and professional potential.

’04 NATALIE MILLER GARZA has been named manager of Amegy Bank’s Commercial Real Estate Group, assuming responsibilities for all commercial real estate lending activities in Texas. She began her career with Amegy, headquartered in Houston, in 2008 after graduating from Louisiana State University and joined the Commercial Real Estate team upon completing the Banker Development credit training program. She earned her MBA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2016 and has served in various roles within the bank’s Corporate and Commercial Real Estate lending departments.

’05 HAYDEN MOORE is one of three SJA graduates honored as a member of Business Report’s 2020 Forty Under 40 class.

She is an attorney with Walters, Papillion, Thomas, Cullens. She works on the firm’s civil litigation matters including personal injury and wrongful death, automobile and trucking accidents, products liability, industrial accidents and medical malpractice. Hayden graduated from Louisiana State University with degrees in political science and sociology with a concentration on criminology.

While at LSU, she served as president of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International. She attended law school at Southern University Law Center, graduating cum laude in 2013. While at Southern, she served as vice justice of Phi Alpha Delta and was a student attorney in the Civil Administrative division of its law clinic. Throughout law school, she volunteered as a reading friend at Highland Elementary School, where she continues to volunteer today. She was admitted to the practice of law in October 2013. She serves on the board of directors for Susan G. Komen Louisiana, the Baton Rouge Bar Association and the Baton Rouge Bar Foundation. She is a chair for Big Wigs Under the Big Top, which raises money for breast cancer research and treatment. ’07 EMILY BACH is practicing podiatry in the St. Louis, Missouri, area. She graduated from Rhodes College with a bachelor of science degree in biology in 2011 and from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in Chicago in 2015. She completed a three-year residency with the Mercy Health System’s three hospitals in Toledo, Ohio.

’09 RACHEL EGGIE-GIBBS is among the Baton Rougeans featured in the January issue of 225 magazine in its “People to Watch in the Capital Region” feature.

After graduating from Louisiana State University with a degree in marketing, Rachel moved to Houston, where she trained at the Aveda Institute and started her career at Therapy Hair Studio. She moved home to Baton Rouge in 2016 and launched her own styling business, House of Eggie, renting chairs from local salon owners. In 2019, she began designing her studio on Goodwood Boulevard, Eggie Salon Studio, which she opened in November of 2020. ’11 MORGAN ALFORD LEETH received her doctorate of nurse practitioner from the Samford University Moffett and Sanders School of Nursing.

She studied for the doctorate to practice in the clinic setting as a nurse practitioner. She specialized in Family Nurse Practitioner. She will work at Birmingham Gastroenterology Associates with her collaborator, Dr. David Landy. Away from work, she enjoys quality time with her husband and son, George, who is a year old.

’12 EMMA ANNELISE BERGERON earned her master’s degree in quantum physics and is working towards her Ph.D. at the University of Waterloo in the Institute of Quantum Computing. She was recently awarded the IQC David Johnston Award for Scientific Outreach.

Award recipients are selected based on their outstanding commitment to scientific outreach and community engagement through volunteerism; dedication to promoting public awareness of quantum information research, general science and IQC in industry or the scientific and local communities; and community engagement to provide educational experiences that embody a culture of continuous learning and promote interest in scientific research.

’15 ELIZABETH AUCOIN graduated from Louisiana State University in 2019 with a major in history and minor in psychology. She lives in Dallas, where she is pursuing her master’s degree in biblical counseling through Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

She is a part-time nanny.

She was a member of Pi Beta Phi at LSU and served all four years by leading a Bible study. She was also involved in campus ministry. After moving to Dallas, she participated in a nine-month discipleship and leadership program, The Fellow Initiative, for recent graduates. She is involved in her church and is a part of Ascent Mentoring, an organization that partners recent women graduates with high school girls for biblical mentoring.

’15 VICTORIA JONES has been named program manager, community engagement of Best Buddies International in Houston. Best Buddies is the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Victoria completed her undergraduate studies in communication disorders at Louisiana State University in 2020. She was a member of the Best Buddies chapter at LSU for three years and was chapter president her senior year. She was also a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and was vice president of recruitment in 2018. In her spare time, Victoria enjoys spending time with family and friends, as well as honing art skills she hasn’t tapped into since high school, particularly painting. She is enjoying creating a few pieces for her future apartment.

’15 LILY LAGRANGE is serving as an AmeriCorps member at the In-Sight Photography Project in Brattleboro, Vermont. The organization provides financially inclusive afterschool arts programming to youth ages 11-17. She teaches analog and digital photography classes and assists with organizational development, including content creation, public relations, email communications, web building and social media. She also works remotely for a stock photo company. Lily has a bachelor of arts degree in economics with a minor in photography from Louisiana State University.

She graduated as a Distinguished Communicator in 2018. She was a DJ at KLSU Radio for three years, and in her final semester, she was the chief announcer.

She was involved with TedxLSU for three years. She served as president of Kitchens on the Geaux in 2016 and president of the Sustainable Agriculture Club in 2017. She went to Thailand during the summer of 2017 with Dr. Carl Mots and the Sustainable Agriculture Club and created an independent photography project as a summer credit. She was also a member of The Student Network for Artistic Photography and wrote/ photographed for LEGACY Magazine. In 2017, she interned at the LSU Museum of Art as the art research/ curatorial intern and at 225 magazine as an editorial photographer. ’15 EMMA MOORE is a registered dietician pursuing her master’s degree in food science at the University of Georgia.

After completing her coursework, she will move to Griffin, Georgia, to begin her research project for her master’s thesis. She is a member of the Food Science Club and the Institute of Food Technologists. Emma graduated from Louisiana State University with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and food science with a concentration in dietetics. She completed her dietetic internship at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond and passed the national exam in July.

While at LSU, Emma was a Tiger Girl for two years.

She received an LSU spirit squad scholarship and was on the Academic Center for Student-Athletes Honor Roll and the Dean’s List. She was a member of the Student Dietetic Association and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She received an undergraduate research grant from the College of Agriculture at LSU and presented her research on reversing obesity in mice at LSU’s Discovery Day and the Institute of Food Technologists. After completing her research project, she worked at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in the metabolic kitchen, helping prepare meals for research participants.

’16 KENNEDY ACHORD graduated from Louisiana State University with a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology with concentration in human movement science. She has begun optometry school at the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry in San Antonio, Texas. She was in Delta Gamma’s Gamma Zeta chapter at LSU and served on the Honor Board/Judicial Board.

She was also a member of the University Hearing Panel for LSU’s Student Advocacy and Accountability office. In her spare time, Kennedy enjoys exercise and trying different types of workouts. She also enjoys cooking new recipes and exploring different restaurants around San Antonio. A former SJA soccer player, Kennedy runs for exercise and plays soccer when she can. After graduating from optometry school in 2024, she plans to move back to Baton Rouge and work alongside her mother in her optometry practice, Achord Eye Clinic.

’16 EMILY NECK graduated cum laude from Louisiana State University with a bachelor of science degree in communication disorders. She is now in graduate school at LSU Health Science Center in New Orleans, where she is studying speechlanguage pathology. She will graduate in May 2022 with a master’s degree in communication disorders and hopes to work with the pediatrics population with speech impediments. She was recently elected historian of the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association. At LSU, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and was elected to represent her sorority on the Leadership Nominating Committee.

’16 ANGELLE PLAUCHE is studying speech-language pathology at LSU Health Science Center in New Orleans. She graduated summa cum laude and as a university medalist in communication disorders from Louisiana State University. She was a member of Delta Gamma at LSU. She likes to spend her spare time with friends and family. She plans to stay in New Orleans in the future and hopes to work with children.

’16 LESLIE CLAIRE PURPERA graduated magna cum laude in May from Texas Christian University with a bachelor of science degree in speechlanguage pathology.

After graduating, she moved to Dallas to attend the University of Texas at Dallas, where she is pursuing a master’s degree in speechlanguage pathology. She will graduate in May of 2022 and plans to stay in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and work with the pediatric population in a school or private practice setting. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring Dallas with friends and trying new restaurants.

A senior at Louisiana State University majoring in history with minors in classical studies and business, Cora sells original paintings, prints, mini card sets, stickers and custom portraits and artwork. FALL SPORTS TEAMS EXCEL IN 2020

The swim team won an unprecedented 10th consecutive Division I state championship.

While 2020 brought challenges galore, it couldn’t stop the St. Joseph’s Academy cross country, swim and volleyball teams from enjoying banner seasons.

The St. Joseph’s Academy cross country team won the Class 5A state championship for the fifth year in a row and for the sixth time in seven years. With three runners in the top nine finishers, the Redstickers scored 48 points to outdistance the 23-team field in the LHSAA Cross Country Championships.

Rounding out the top five were Dominican (84), Mount Carmel (123), Fontainebleau (139) and Ruston (139). The 5A championship race was held November 17 at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches.

Senior Sophie Martin finished in second place in 18:37.6 followed by junior Elise Jones, fourth place, 18:55.3; sophomore Emma Claire Hendry, ninth place, 19:21.7; junior Ava Lemoine, 12th place, 19:35.5; freshman Grace Rennhoff, 21st place, 20:03.2; senior Lydia Poche, 24th place, 20:17.1; and junior Maddie Kate Gardiner, 26th place, 20:19.4.

Coach Mark LaHaye said the Redstickers began the season as the top-ranked team in the Louisiana Coaches Poll and finished the season with the number one ranking. “This speaks to the consistency and dedication to excellence the team performed with all year,” he said. “The performance at the state meet – our ‘5-peat’ – was dominating. This team was unstoppable, and they persevered through a crazy 2020 season. They all have so much to be proud of.”

The swim team captured its 10th consecutive Division I state championship, scoring 280 points to finish ahead of Mandeville (227), CE Byrd (224), Dominican (196.5) and Southside (187). There were 23 teams in the LHSAA swim meet held November 20 and 21 at the YMCA of Northwest Louisiana. The championship meet was moved to Shreveport because of damage caused to the SPAR facility in Sulphur by two recent hurricanes.

Senior Amanda Andrews was the only individual winner for SJA, which relied on depth to capture the title. “It was so amazing to be with this team and to be here to race at state and compete during the decade of dominance,” she said.

Assistant Coach Ali Buchart, a 2015 graduate of SJA and former swim team member, filled in for head coach George Newport, who was mending at home after a bicycle accident. He spoke to the swimmers before and after the meet via FaceTime and kept tabs on their progress throughout.

Newport said the team fought back from being in third place after the first two events and in second place after three. In the fourth of the meet’s 11 events, the team pulled ahead. “We used great swims and superior depth to win our 10th state title in a row,” he said. “Our four state meet seniors, Amanda Andrews, Gabby Joffrion, Katherine Scully and Mary Stuckey, were fantastic. These four ladies led by example with tough swimming and great leadership. Together, they accounted for 90.5 points. They will be missed.”

The volleyball team finished the 2020 season as the state runner-up, falling to top-seeded Dominican in four sets in the final match of the LHSAA Volleyball State Championships. The Redstickers, seeded third in the tournament, came up short in the Division I title match, 13-25, 17-25, 25-23, 22-25. The match was played November 14 in the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.

The Redstickers ended the season with a 23-4 record and, with a four-set win in the semifinal round over six-time defending state champion Mount Carmel Academy, gave Coach Sivi Miller her 800th win. continued on next page 25 | S J A C O N N E C T I O N S Winter 2021

“We played a great championship match but fell short of our goal,” Miller said. “The girls never gave up, but Dominican just outplayed us. I am so proud of how the girls stuck together, pushing each other, working hard for every point and represented SJA with pride. Yes, we would have loved to bring home the title, but we accomplished so much this season, and we brought home the runner-up trophy. We are proud of each member of this team, and they should be proud of themselves, as well.”

Miller said she was especially proud of her team because of the way the girls handled the challenges of playing a season under the cloud of COVID-19.

“We did not know how much of a season we would have,” she said. “Tryouts were different, we were not able to attend or even host tournaments, we did not get to play as many matches and some matches were played without fans. Through it all, we were blessed to have had a season, and we had a great one at that. The team was playing its best volleyball at the end. The team was playing as a unit. We trusted each other. Even with all that we had to deal with daily, they just kept working hard and getting the job done.”

Each year, students taking an upper-level honors science course at St. Joseph’s Academy participate in the school’s science fair as the first step in attempting to advance to the Region VII Science and Engineering Fair at Louisiana State University.

Typically, students present their original research projects, which they have worked on over the course of two years, to a panel of experts from a variety of disciplines. The judges come to campus to review the projects and ask participating students questions about their scientific processes. But with COVID-related restrictions prohibiting onsite judging, SJA’s science fair coordinators turned to technology to enable the students to showcase their research efforts.

Science Fair Coordinator Jacqueline Savoia approached science teacher Aimee Cronan to determine the best way to conduct a virtual school fair.

Cronan suggested using Flipgrid to enable the students to submit their presentation videos and a shared drive for uploading their papers.

Cronan linked the two and transmitted them to the judges, who were given a week to score the projects. Cronan also set up a Google survey for the judges with the criteria to use when analyzing the students’ research.

The surveys also enabled the judges to share their comments. Scores and comments were submitted electronically for compilation.

The process mimics the requirements that will be in place for this year’s regional competition, also virtual, enabling the students to become comfortable with the online judging process. “We felt it was important that the girls follow the same guidelines for the school fair to best prepare them for regionals,” Cronan said. “I’ve been using Flipgrid with my own students since the start of the school year, and I knew it would be the perfect platform for this scenario.”

While the process worked seamlessly, there were inherent challenges with condensing two years’ worth of research into a three-minute

video presentation. “Three minutes is not a long time when you are trying to present volumes of work,” Cronan said. “There was a fine balance between making sure they covered everything they needed to get across in those three minutes and trying to talk slowly enough to be understood.”

There was a learning curve for the judges, as well. “Normally, the judges have a chance to ask the girls questions to get clarification on the details, but that wasn’t an option this year,” Cronan said.

To combat this deviation from the norm, the surveys enabled the judges to share comments and the questions they wish they could have asked. “This should give the girls a chance to improve their presentations if they are invited to move on to regionals,” Cronan said.

Linda Messina, retired SJA science teacher and former science fair coordinator, will help the students who are advancing to the regional fair. She is filling in while Savoia is on maternity leave and will assist the students in editing their videos based on the judges’ comments and in readying their forms for upload.

Savoia expressed immense pride in her students’ resilience in overcoming the challenges put in their paths by the pandemic. “This group of girls showed more grit and determination than any I have ever seen,” Savoia said. “The setbacks, disappointment and frustration with not being able to complete what was originally planned were unbelievable. The students and I worked hard and worked together to get everything accomplished for our originally scheduled fair date.

We pushed deadlines back and doubled up on meetings, meeting in person and online. Many professors were very accommodating of the situation and were very helpful mentoring students and meeting with them online. I do not think I could be prouder of this very special group.

These students will move on to college knowing how to persevere and overcome despite the obstacles they may face.”

Messina agreed. “I was in total disbelief when I saw what the SJA girls had accomplished in such a short amount of time,” she said.

This year’s science fair was the largest in school history, with 150 projects. Thirtynine students will advance to the regional fair, set for February 22-26 at LSU.

Bahlinger Award Finalists

The 15 finalists for the 2021-2022 Josephine Bahlinger Award gathered on campus on January 15 for a special breakfast in their honor. The eighth graders were accompanied by their parents and elementary school principals.

The merit-based award is named in honor of St. Joseph’s Academy’s first graduate, Josephine Bahlinger, class of 1877. It provides $4,000 toward their freshman-year tuition to five incoming ninth-grade students based on outstanding academic performance in elementary school; a history of standardized test scores in the 90th percentile; service to school and/or community; exemplary conduct record; active participation in cocurricular activities; and an essay and interview.
