EMBRACING CHANGES AND POSSIBILITIES ON YOUR LIFE’S JOURNEY
Editor’s note: This is the address delivered by Jan Rhorer Breen ’69 during the commencement exercises for the St. Joseph’s Academy class of 2026 on May 19.
Class of 2026. Words are powerful tools. They call us to action, they offer us hope, they help us understand, they articulate how we are feeling. Words also communicate a message, and my message today highlights the possibilities that await you and the changes that you will experience.
Trappist Monk Thomas Merton said, “You do not need to know precisely what is happening or where you are going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and changes that await you in your life and embrace them with courage, faith and hope.”
When I think of all that is possible and the women who can create change, I think of the class of 2026.
How can you embrace the changes and possibilities as you experience the next steps on your journey?
Remember you are SJA women. You hold a rare combination of personal characteristics: intellectual commitment, a vision filled with purpose that comes from God’s presence in your life and a desire to
serve the dear neighbor without distinction. You embody sanctity, joy and action. These traits will guide you in the many changes and possibilities to come.
Remember to listen to your inner voice. God is always speaking to you. Eliminate the noise in your life that drowns out God’s voice. One of the greatest challenges you have is the noise of social media, technology and the continuous “plugged-in” world we live in. And as our world embraces the technology of AI and other initiatives to come, I urge you to take time to lower the volume of noise and listen to God as He helps you on your journey. As Pope Francis said, “There is a spark of divine light in each of us. Let that light guide your way throughout your life.”
Remember to live in a state of gratitude.
Gratitude is the heart of life, the gateway to grace. With a grateful heart, we recognize God in everything. Take a few minutes each day to stop and thank God for at least one thing that happened that day. Even when the day is filled with challenges, there is always something to be grateful for.
Remember to be gentle with yourself and others. We all have faults, failings and weaknesses. Forgive yourself and others. Accept God’s forgiveness. As St. Francis de Sales said, “Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. Embrace that each day is a new beginning.”
Remember the meaning of success.
True success is peace with God and becoming the woman God intended you to be. What is meant for you will not miss you. Trust in God’s timing and His path for you. In the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph, along with your family and faculty of SJA, you have the tools to change the world. It is your time to be that change. And I believe women will lead the way and redefine what true success means in this ever-changing world filled with possibilities. The only true and lasting meaning of success is to become the person you were created to be.
Class of 2026, always be open to change and possibilities, for without change, we can’t see God’s purpose for us, and without possibilities, the fruits of our gifts are not revealed.
Remember that you cannot change one moment of the past, so grasp the present moment. Remain constant and true to yourself, your beliefs and the values you embody as SJA women. You leave holding all that is possible, and you are the change that the world needs.
Remember that we are all one, that we are all SJA sisters and that we are loved. And, as you joyfully sing in our “unofficial anthem,” Matt Maher’s Love Will Hold Us Together, remember that “This is the first day of the rest of your life!”

Three long-time members of the St. Joseph’s Academy community were honored at a retirement reception on May 7. The gathering of family, friends and colleagues took place in the Fife Student Commons.
Jan Rhorer Breen ’69 has served as president of the Academy for the last 14 years. “I am thankful for the opportunity to return to my alma mater as the first lay president,” she said. “It has been a humbling experience to stand on the shoulders of our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph, and to collaborate with so many constituent groups in fulfilling our mission. In the early years of my return to SJA, the young women would refer to me as Sister Jan, but eventually, I would be known as Mrs. Breen. I learned that whatever title we have and whoever walks these halls, we are all living the charism of our founders, ‘That All May Be One.’”
Jill Abadie spent 32 years at SJA, first as an English teacher and then as director of the Learning Center. “When I first came to the Academy, my daughter was 3 years old,” she said. “At the first school mass I attended, I was struck by the warm sense of community and knew that I wanted my daughter to experience it. It has proven true for all three of my daughters that they have made lifelong friends and countless connections through their time at SJA. Studying the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph and, more importantly, watching it lived through the lives of the Sisters on campus has helped shape my view of the world and how we should treat others. My time at SJA has been like the experience of reading a good book: I love the setting, the characters and even (most of) the conflicts. Just as it’s difficult to come to the end of a good book, it’s hard to say goodbye to SJA.”
Dorinda Beaumont’s SJA career spanned 29 years. She served as a member of the Health and Physical Education department, softball coach, assistant volleyball coach and athletic director. “SJA has become my second home/family because of all the support and love I have felt throughout my time here,” she said. “The faculty, staff and students truly embrace the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and it makes me proud to say I am a member of this wonderful community. I will miss the daily camaraderie of my department and the amazing young ladies I have taught over the years, but the memories will last forever.”
SJA honored three employees who will retire at the end of the academic year: Learning Center Director Jill Abadie, President Jan Rhorer Breen ’69 and faculty member/former coach and athletic director Dorinda Beaumont.

St. Joseph’s Academy is the recipient of the Louisiana Wildlife Federation’s Youth Program award, selected through the Conservation Achievement Awards Program. The program recognizes individuals, organizations and businesses that have made significant contributions to the cause of conservation and wise use of Louisiana’s natural resources. SJA was honored for its decades-long involvement in the LSU Coastal Roots program.
The Youth Program award was presented at the 60th Conservation Achievement Awards Banquet on April 11 at Juban’s Restaurant. SJA was represented by President Jan Breen ’69 and former science teacher Linda Messina.
In 1999, Mrs. Messina approached Dr. Pam Blanchard, the education coordinator at the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program, looking for a cross-curricular project involving science, math, history and environmental science. Together, they decided to teach Mrs. Messina’s students how to do water-quality testing, but the grant money associated with the training required a restoration component. Mrs. Messina suggested planting trees. But finding cypress seedlings in the midst of a three-year drought proved problematic, so the students learned to grow their own. Thus, LSU Coastal Roots was born.
SJA served as a pilot for the Coastal Roots program. This year marks the 26th anniversary of the school’s active participation in the environmental stewardship initiative. Building upon the foundation laid by SJA and LSU, there are currently more than 40 schools across 17 Louisiana parishes taking part in the program. Students from second grade through high school learn about and become stewards of their natural resources by establishing native plant nurseries at their schools. They grow native plant seedlings and grass plugs that they plant in a coastal habitat restoration project in south Louisiana.
Following Mrs. Messina’s retirement in 2018, Jonathan Durocher became the moderator of SJA’s Science Club and continues the school’s work with Coastal Roots.

ST. JOSEPH’S
ACADEMY WELCOMES WOMAN’S HOSPITAL AS CORPORATE SPONSOR
St. Joseph’s Academy is proud to announce a new corporate sponsorship with Woman’s Hospital, a partnership rooted in a shared commitment to empowering young women and strengthening the Baton Rouge community.
This collaboration brings together two mission-driven organizations dedicated to supporting the growth, health and success of the next generation. Through the sponsorship, Woman’s Hospital will provide invaluable support for schoolwide programs that enrich the SJA experience for young women across the Baton Rouge community.
“Welcoming Woman’s Hospital as a corporate sponsor is an exciting step forward for our school community,” said SJA President Jan Rhorer Breen ’69. “Their leadership in women’s health and longstanding commitment to Baton Rouge align beautifully with our mission. Together, we are creating meaningful opportunities that will inspire our students and support them as they lead lives of purpose.”
Students will benefit from opportunities to engage with healthcare professionals through guest speakers, wellness programming and exposure to careers in medicine and related fields. These experiences will not only reinforce the importance of lifelong health and well-being but also broaden students’ perspectives as they explore future paths.
Rene Ragas, president and chief executive officer of Woman’s Hospital, and Jan Rhorer Breen ’69, president of St. Joseph’s Academy, sign papers solidifying Woman’s as a corporate sponsor of the school. Looking on are Meg Gerald, SJA mission advancement director, and Stacia Andricain, SJA principal.
“At Woman’s Hospital, we believe in lifting up women at every stage of life, and that starts with young women finding their voice, their confidence and their future,” said Rene Ragas, president and chief executive officer of Woman’s Hospital. “Supporting St. Joseph’s Academy is about investing in the next generation of leaders, caregivers, innovators and changemakers who will make our community stronger for years to come.”
Woman’s Hospital is recognized throughout the region for excellence in healthcare for women and families and its dedication to community outreach. Its investment in St. Joseph’s Academy reflects a deep belief in the power of education and the importance of supporting young women as they grow into confident, compassionate leaders.
The partnership launched on SJA’s Give Day, when Woman’s Hospital was a challenge donor. The relationship will continue for the next five school years with plans for continued collaboration and expanded programming. SJA looks forward to the positive impact this relationship will have on students, faculty/staff and the wider school community.
As the Academy continues its tradition of excellence, partnerships with mission-driven organizations help ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge, values and opportunities they need to thrive today and in the years to come.

That is how strong families and strong communities are built.”

FAMILY ESTABLISHES JAN RHORER BREEN ’69 SCHOLARSHIP
The family of Jan Rhorer Breen ’69 has established a scholarship in the SJA Foundation to commemorate her retirement as president of St. Joseph’s Academy after 14 years of service.
The scholarship, which was announced at a retirement celebration on May 5 at the City Club, will provide tuition assistance to deserving students and their families. Dr. Jim Rhorer, Jan’s brother, said the scholarship pays tribute to Jan’s years of leadership and her commitment to providing a Catholic education to students who may not otherwise have the opportunity. Jan established the Edward Hawley Rhorer Scholarship at Catholic High School in their father’s name and the Janet Quinn Rhorer Endowed Scholarship at SJA in their mother’s name. “It’s only fitting to give her something that she holds so dear,” Jim said.
The scholarship in Jan’s name also honors the Sisters of St. Joseph, who have been part of the Rhorer family for generations. “We all grew up with the Sisters being our educators, mentors and family friends,” Jim said. “The Sisters were with us for the great milestones in our lives and supported all of us in understanding our connection to spirituality, the teachings of Christ and the pragmatic applications of the ‘Christ within us’ in our daily lives. They are exemplars, and their commitment to our God and community are steadfast and inspiring.”
Under Jan’s leadership as SJA’s first lay president, 53 new endowed scholarships were established to provide need-based tuition assistance to families. Jim said that as the second of seven children in a middle-class family, Jan watched both parents hold full-time jobs to enable the children to attend Sacred Heart, Catholic High School and St. Joseph’s Academy. “A Catholic education was a requisite in our family, and our parents struggled to achieve this for us,” Jim said. “Jan knows firsthand what parents must do to secure the best education for their children. Opportunity invites the development of unrealized potential. Jan knows what our opportunities did for us. It is only right and expected that she would want the same for others.”

’12 RACHEL
’12 Rachel Marsh is celebrating the release of her second novel, Grandpere’s Ghost Swamp, a cozy, middle-grade ghost story about family, environmental activism, food and friendship. A Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection, the novel comes “strongly recommended” by School Library Journal. It explores what it means to connect more deeply with Cajun roots, whether through delicious food or protecting the wetlands where Cajuns and other Louisianians have lived for centuries. The story follows 12-year-old Basil Theriot, who has spent her entire life at her family’s famed Cajun restaurant in the French Quarter but has never been out to the bayou where her grandfather grew up. At least not until Grandpere’s ghost appears, intent on connecting Basil with her Cajun heritage. He sends her out to the bayou to meet his friends: an airboat captain, a shrimper and a scientist rebuilding Louisiana’s fastdisappearing coastline. Each ghostly quest pulls Basil further away from her parents’ expectation that she’ll take over the restaurant one day. As she grows to love Louisiana’s wetlands and fear for their future, she wonders if a different path as a coastal scientist might be calling her instead. Can Basil help Grandpere move on and save the bayou without disappointing her parents? Greenwillow Books, a HarperCollins imprint, is the publisher. Read more at rachelmmarsh.com.

HEWS
Summer has arrived at St. Joseph’s Academy. The crepe myrtles in the courtyard are in full bloom, the class of 2026 has graduated and our students and faculty are enjoying a well-deserved break. As the school year comes to a close, so does the 2025-2026 Annual Fund campaign.
The SJA Annual Fund is rooted in the shared commitment of our entire community – parents, alumnae and friends – to the ministry of Catholic education. It ensures that SJA can continue to provide the exceptional academic and co-curricular programs that empower each student to reach her full potential. Every gift supports every aspect of an SJA education, making a direct impact on every student and program.
The focus of our Annual Fund is to encourage broad participation by inviting gifts at every level. Whether it’s a new alumna giving $10 or a longtime supporter giving $10,000, each gift plays a vital role, and every contribution truly matters.
Thanks to your generosity, we have surpassed our goal raising more than $736,000 or 4.2 percent of our operating budget. We are deeply grateful for your support in helping us achieve this milestone.
If you have not yet had the opportunity to give, there is still time. Our fiscal year ends June 30, and we welcome your participation. Gifts can be made online at www. sjabr.org. Click on the “Give Online” button at the top of the screen, or mail a check to SJA Foundation, 3015 Broussard Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70808.
If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Mission Advancement Director Meg Gerald at (225) 388-2254 or geraldm@sjabr.org.
ONE GIFT. ANY AMOUNT. YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS.
TOGETHER, WE ARE
SJA.
LEAVING A LEGACY OF FAITH AND EXCELLENCE
For generations, St. Joseph’s Academy has shaped the lives of young women, fostering faith development, academic excellence and personal growth. Many supporters wonder how they can ensure that this mission continues well into the future. One meaningful way is through a charitable bequest.
A bequest is a gift included in your will or living trust that takes effect after your lifetime. It allows you to continue supporting St. Joseph’s Academy while first ensuring that your loved ones are cared for. Thoughtful and forwardlooking, this type of giving creates a lasting impact without affecting your current financial security.
One of the greatest advantages of a bequest is its simplicity. With just a few sentences added to your will or trust, you can make a significant contribution to the future of the Academy. It is also fully revocable, meaning you can adjust your plans at any time as your circumstances change.
Bequests are also highly flexible. Donors may choose to leave a specific dollar amount, a percentage of their estate or even a gift that is contingent upon certain events. This versatility allows each individual to craft a plan that reflects both their personal goals and their commitment to the mission of St. Joseph’s Academy.
For those interested in making this type of gift, it is important to work with a qualified legal and financial advisor when preparing your will. The following sample language can be shared to ensure your wishes are clearly documented:
“I, (name), of (city, state, zip code), give, devise and bequeath to St. Joseph’s Academy of Baton Rouge (written amount or percentage of the estate) for its unrestricted use and purpose.”
While decisions about estate planning are deeply personal, informing the Academy of your intentions can be a meaningful gesture. Those who choose to share their plans are welcomed into The Legacy Society, a community of supporters whose generosity will shape the future. With permission, members are recognized in special publications and invited to exclusive events in appreciation of their lasting commitment.
Every gift tells a story. Through a bequest, your story becomes part of St. Joseph’s Academy’s enduring legacy: one that will continue to inspire, educate and empower young women for years to come.
For more information about including St. Joseph’s Academy in your will or living trust, please contact Mission Advancement Director Meg Gerald at (225) 388-2254 or geraldm@sjabr.org.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES
On Thursday, March 19, members of the St. Joseph’s Academy community came together in full force for the 10th SJA Give Day honoring the feast of our patron, Saint Joseph. This 24hour giving event benefits the St. Joseph’s Academy Annual Fund.
Thanks to the generosity of more than 1,000 donors, we raised $177,050 in just one day, far surpassing our Give Day goal.
The class of 2026 led the way with an impressive 70 percent participation rate. Seniors made gifts in honor of those who supported them through their high school journey and pledged $10 annually for the next four years, creating a lasting legacy for future SJA students.
This year’s Give Day showcased the remarkable reach of the SJA community. Alumnae donors represented 23 states and the District of Columbia with class years spanning from 1954 to 2025. Parents, friends and grandparents also joined together in support of SJA, demonstrating the strength and unity of the SJA family.
Our Give Day success would not have been possible without our challenge donors. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Jan Rhorer Breen ’69, Kristy Roubique ’76, SJA Dads’ Club, SJA Mothers’ Club, Yolunda and Jonathan Taylor, Re (Bologna ’71) DiVincenti, Corey (Braud ’86) and Shaun Toups, Holly and Justin Dekeyzer, Suzie (Toups ’85) and Andy Adler, Tina and Mark LaHaye, Katie Thompson ’16, Shane and Sarah Morrison Family, Dorren Schmitt ’80 (SJA-New Orleans), Tiffani and Brian Dorsa, Gabriella and Marshall St. Amant, Elizabeth and Jonathan Weiler and Woman’s Hospital.
Thank you to everyone who participated in Give Day 2026. Your generosity will make a lasting impact and continue to enhance the SJA experience for years to come.
The class of 2026 set the tone for Give Day 2026 with a record 70 percent participation rate. Redsticker Society Ambassadors helped encourage the soon-to-be graduates to begin their philanthropic support of their alma mater with a $5 donation. Ambassadors are, left to right (front row) Camille Masterson, Linley Denstel, Maddie Rambo, Jenna Braud, Elizabeth Bertucci, Allison Riley, (back row) Gretchen Payne, Ella Peek, Adeline Bonner, Clare Valluzzo, Louisa deBlieux, Hattie Boone, Olivia Funes, Addison Comeaux, Sydney Kline and Amelia Lalonde.
St. Joseph’s Academy won Challenge Day 2026 by the score of 10-5 over Catholic High School. The 20th competition between the two schools took place March 27 in the Academy Student Center. The event is hosted each year by the student councils from both schools.
With the victory, the Redstickers broke a two-year losing streak and tied the 20-year competition at 10 victories each.
SJA won the Memory Game, Jenga, Cup Stacking, Uniform Swap and Bucket Ball, while CHS was victorious in Ping Pong and Marshmallow Toss. SJA forfeited the two points won in the Bucket Ball event after an exuberant rushing of the court at the end of the competition. Both schools met their goals in this year’s Challenge Day Can Drive to benefit the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, with each school earning two points towards their total.
The Challenge Day Can Drive is one of the largest food drives of the year, according to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. SJA collected 32,628 pounds of food and $3,031 in monetary donations. All donations are the equivalent of up to 36,283 meals. CHS collected 35,041 pounds of food and $1,962 in monetary donations. All donations are the equivalent of up to 35,087 meals.
“Partnerships like this are powered by people, and the commitment shown by the staff and students of SJA and CHS is truly inspiring,” said Liz Pfifer, president and CEO of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. “By donating thousands of pounds of food through Challenge Day, they are directly helping us put more meals on the table for neighbors facing hunger, and that impact is felt immediately across our community.”
Challenge Week kicked off on Monday, March 23. Throughout the week, students were able to dress according to the day’s theme. The week culminated on Friday, with students dressed in karate-inspired costumes for this year’s Challenge Day theme of Stickin’ It: Welcome to the St. Do-Joe. A pre-competition pep
rally was held in the Academy Student Center.
The SJA Mothers’ Club and Alumnae Association Board hosted a Challenge Day Watch Party at Luna Cocina. Parents, alumnae and faculty/staff members gathered to watch the competition via livestream.
Challenge Day 2026 was streamed by the Academy Athletics Network. Under the direction of SJA Media Coordinator Taylor Martina, producer, the broadcast team included reporters Ava Thevenot and Anna Rea Lasseigne; camera operators Izzy Stelly, Kristen Wilhelm, Paige Roscoe, Marie Henderson, Sofia Chaney and Lucy LaPlace; and graphics creator Audrey Tullier.

SJA CELEBRATES WORLD LANGUAGES
The World Language Department at St. Joseph’s Academy hosted the inaugural World Language Honor Societies
Induction Ceremony on March 18.
SJA offers membership in three World Language Honor Societies: Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica for Spanish, National Latin Honor Society and Société Honoraire de Français for French. Each recognizes high academic achievement and encourages ongoing interest in language and cultural studies. Students who meet the criteria are invited to apply in the fall and, upon acceptance, are inducted during a spring ceremony.
During the ceremony in the Academy Student Center, students were inducted by the sponsors of each honor society: Catherine Théfenne for French, Laura Bordelon for Spanish and Leigh Grace Rouyer for Latin. They recited a pledge in the corresponding language, followed by a candle-lighting ceremony.
The Société Honoraire de Français recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in French language and francophone cultures. Members are committed to promoting appreciation for the French language and global francophone culture. The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in Spanish language study and actively promote interest in Hispanic language and culture. Members encourage understanding and celebration of the diversity of Hispanic communities worldwide. The National Latin Honor Society recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in Latin studies and the civilizations of the ancient world. Latin forms the foundation of many modern languages and continues to influence literature, science and law.
Catherine Théfenne welcomed Tiana Khuri as a member of the Société Honoraire de Français. Tiana was one of 35 students inducted into the honor society for French studies.
Leigh Grace Rouyer poses with three of the six new members of the National Latin Honor Society. They are Grace Buras, Emily Guillet and Zoe Woodroffe.
Laura Bordelon inducted Lucy Bea Wood as one of 28 members of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica.
