LENT: A TIM E T O NURT URE O UR I NNE R LI FE Lent is a time to discover the mystery of Christ within us. It *4 " 5*.& 50 3&=&$5 0/ 8)0 8& "3& "/% 50 /63563& 063 *//&3 life. As we prepare for the death and resurrection of Jesus, we look at our own lives and how we can move closer to becoming who God intended us to be. Lent is also a time of solitude, a time of listening to our inner voice but also attending to the needs of others. It is a time of renewal for us that brings a new hope, a new trust and a new love. Love, patience, forgiveness and prayer help guide us on our journey during Lent.
LOVE . Love is a life of grace. Love is the light that burns in our hearts. Love unites our will to the will of God. As St. Francis de Sales said, “We must begin with love, continue with love and end with love. Always believe in God’s merciful love, for it makes time eternal by giving a divine value to everything. When everything is done in love, everything becomes a prayer.
During Lent, we take up the cross. “Sorrow lifts us up, sorrow makes us grow and sorrow frees us and is the prelude to grace. We see the love of Jesus in all our crosses. It is in love that God gives us our crosses. If we accept them with joy, God showers his graces upon us. (From the teachings of St. Therese of Lisieux.) We are asked to lead a loving life, to love the Lord with all our heart and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Let your heart be open to God’s love this Lent and give wholeheartedly to our fellow human beings.
P ATI E NC E. The French author Simone Weil said,
“Waiting patiently in expectation is the foundation of a spiritual life.â€? Patience comes from the word patior, which means “to suffer.â€? We discover that what appears to be a hurdle is a new path; what seems an obstacle is a door opening; what is a change becomes a cornerstone in our lives. Patience gives us the opportunity for a change of heart and makes us ready for the joy that God promises in His resurrection. Patience brings the discovery of a new life and )&"354 <--&% 8*5) +0:Ăž / 0)/ ?AÄ EĂ˝ &464 3&1-*&%Ă˝ Ä‹ 06 %0 /05 realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.â€?
Remember that each event in our lives brings us closer to the will of God and the joy He promises us. Lent is a time 50 3&=&$5 0/ 5)& *.1035"/$& 0' 1"5*&/$& */ 063 41*3*56"- journey.
FORG I V E NE S S .
Forgiveness stands in the center of God’s love for us and also in the center of our love for each other. Loving one another means forgiving one another over and over again. Forgiveness is an act that removes anger, bitterness and the desire for revenge from our hearts and helps us to reclaim who God intended us to be. The only people we can truly change are ourselves, and forgiving others helps to heal our own hearts. We need to forgive every day, every hour. Theologian Henri Nouwen stated, “When we do not forgive those who have wounded us, we carry them with us or, worse, pull them as " )&"7: -0"%Ăž 03(*7&/&44 )"4 580 4*%&4Ä giving and receiving. During Lent, let us embrace the importance of forgiveness and know that God’s forgiveness is unconditional.
PRA YE R. To pray is to listen to the voice of God, to hear His love. In prayer, we hear how God speaks to us in the moment. Present your anxieties, struggles and fears to God and let Him show you the way. Pray for a few minutes each day, and God always reveals Himself to you where you are most fully present. He will listen to you because He is moved with compassion and love for you. As you pray each day during Lent, let God guide you in His love for you. Pray with gentleness and humility, and ask for the light of God. There is a simple Lenten prayer by &/3* 068&/ 5)"5 41&",4 0' 0%ĉ4 -07& '03 64Ä Dear God, I so much want to be in control. The couple, who have been married for 25 years, met in 1992 while Matalin worked on the campaign of President George H.W. Bush and Carville worked for his challenger, Democrat Bill Clinton. They talked about the circumstances surrounding their meeting and the early days of their relationship. Matalin and Carville discussed their views of feminism. They discussed working in the White House, the terrorist attacks of September 11, building consensus and living in the technology age. Carville said the ability to communicate is critically important in all walks of life. “My advice to you is read, write, read, write, read, write,â€? he said. “The ability to cogently and coherently express yourself in a limited space is a skill that is needed &7&3:8)&3&Ăž /% *5ĉ4 3&"--: " 4,*--Ăž 06 $"/ 0/-: %0 *5 #: %0*/( *5 again and again.â€?

Claudia and Keith share a deep affection for their respective alma maters. Claudia said her family was honored to be invited to the February 26 mass and to witness the family’s gift being blessed by Bishop Duca. Cecilia enjoyed the experience, as well. “I think it looks so pretty hanging in the gym,â€? she said. “It was exciting to be there and be a part of the mass. I loved hearing the girls singing.â€? GRADUATE HONORS FRIEND IN MEANINGFUL WAY It’s easy to understand Sarah Lomax Gray’s passion for raising awareness about sun safety. She lost her best friend, St. Joseph’s Academy classmate Lauren Savoy Olinde, to skin cancer at the age of 27. The 2002 Academy graduates were inseparable and dreamed of one day raising their families together. But in October of 2009, "63&/ 8"4 %*"(/04&% 8*5) 5"(& .&-"/0." Determined to bring their plans to fruition, Sarah pushed ahead, and the Lauren Savoy Olinde Foundation became a reality on January 20, 2012. Lauren died at home the next day surrounded by family and friends. As the foundation’s co-founder, "3")ĉ4 <345 6/%&35",*/( 8"4 creating a 5K race in the spring of 2013. Sarah recently reorganized the Foundation under the auspices of the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation. Monies raised continue to support skin cancer awareness and detection efforts. “Skin cancer is the number one cancer in the U.S.,” Sarah said. “More people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year than

And the young girls who use tanning beds are increasing their risk in a major way. Skin cancer detection is such an easy lesson on what to look for and how to protect your skin in the sun.” The LSO Foundation recently published an illustrated children’s book. Dottie’s Sun Survival Guide, starring sunglasses- and hat-wearing Dottie the Dalmatian, teaches the ABCs of skin care to young readers. Episcopal High graduate Arden Koschel wrote the book while a junior in high school, and Sarah served as editor. Today, Sarah visits local schools to read the book to students, dress Dottie in sunappropriate clothing and lead youngsters through a fun mole hunt activity. Sarah also makes sun safety and skin cancer detection presentations to groups in and around Louisiana. “I have now taught more than 60 groups, some with more than 200 people, and what makes it so impactful is Lauren’s story,” Sarah said. “I wouldn’t be able to make the difference I have if not for the reason I’m there: a vibrant young woman was lost to a mole on her head.” Hardcover copies of Dottie’s Sun Survival Guide can be purchased online at lsofoundation.org.
