Introduction

I thought a lot about kindness as I was creating the artwork for this book. Kindness to ourselves, kindness to others—it’s something that can be lacking in our busy lives. It’s easy to forget how little things, like words of encouragement or recognition that someone might be going through a tough time, can mean so much. Acts of kindness are key to connecting with our community, with family and friends. And we must include ourselves as being deserving of kindness as well; it is essential to our well-being.

So this collection focuses on the importance of kindness—of generosity of spirit, of supporting those we love, and of extending grace to ourselves. We are all deserving of love, of recognition, of appreciation, of being lifted up. I have tried to find quotes that will be of comfort in many different situations, so choose whichever one speaks to you in the moment to color.

Coloring is a wonderful way for people of every age to grant themselves a moment of self-care in a creative space. There is no right or wrong way to color. I have varied the complexity of my drawings; if you are feeling anxious, find a page with a simpler design so you don’t get overwhelmed and can shed your stress as you color. Also, I would urge you not to compare your work to that of others. Your coloring is for YOU to enjoy; it is not for anyone else unless you want it to be.
