Doodle Your Way to Calm

Thank you for picking up this book and choosing to relax with some doodling! Drawing and doodling are a great way to relieve stress and practice mindfulness. But it can be hard to find time to decompress and make art, and starting with a blank page can be intimidating. Whether you are looking for a moment of calm or some creative inspiration, the watercolors in this “reverse coloring” doodle book will help.

With its small size and only tool being any pen, your reverse coloring watercolors book can be taken out for a relaxing moment anywhere:

• Before an appointment

• Commuting on the bus or train

• Traveling on an airplane

• While waiting to meet someone

• Instead of doomscrolling on your phone

The goal of the 43 watercolor pages in this book is to provide an easy and fun creative escape through drawing on the colorful splotches and splashes. All you need is a pen, so this book can be taken anywhere, anytime, and can be doodled alone or with others! Bring it to a gathering with friends or family, or turn date night into doodle night. If you want to use this to build in regular time for creativity, it can be easier to make a new habit if you add it to an existing habit.

The next few pages have some guidance for how to make the most of this book—including some suggested tools and ideas to get you started—but the one rule to keep in mind is that there are no rules!

All you really need is a pen!

There are lots of different pens and markers to choose from, and some pens come in multiple line weights. You can use whatever you have on hand.

Fine Liner Pens

TIP: Waterproof pens won’t smudge!

Ballpoint Pens

TIP: Holding the pen straight up will render a slightly thinner line. Holding the pen at an angle will draw a slightly thicker line.

Felt-Tip Markers

Gel Pens

TIP: White pens and markers are a fun way to add different dimensions to the colors on the pages and the doodles you turn them into.

Brush Pens and Markers

TIP: Brush pens with soft tips create versatile lines depending on how you hold the brush and apply pressure.

Permanent Markers

TIP: Permanent markers are more likely to bleed through to the next page. You can test by putting another piece of paper underneath a page to see if it will leave a mark.

This is a recognizable floral illustration that you can take further in that direction by outlining leaves and petals as they appear to you, or you can look for other shapes and patterns and turn the splashes into whatever or wherever your pen takes you!

“Color” in each painting with all kinds of lines and patterns. Mix up the pens you use for different textures. Try keeping your pen on the page and drawing with one continued line. Follow the inspiration and remember that these are doodles to create calm with.

The watercolors in this book are yours to doodle however you please. The possibilities are endless!
