ZION NATIONAL PARK

KATMAI NATIONAL PARK

SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK

ACADIA National Park MAINE

Though Acadia in Maine is one of the smaller national parks, it is one of the top ten most visited. The only national park in the northeastern United States, Acadia is where you can see the sun rise first in the US from October 7 through March 6. The Bass Harbor Head Light Station is one of the most popular destinations on the park’s Mount Desert Island, along with Thunder Hole, Sand Beach, Jordan Pond, and Cadillac Mountain, the tallest point on the eastern seaboard. A bird-watcher’s dream, Acadia has recorded over 300 bird species, including songbirds, waterfowl, woodpeckers, and birds of prey, like the osprey. Acadia lies in the homeland of the Wabanaki people, who have lived here for 10,000 years.

4

ARCHES National Park UTAH

Situated in a relatively small area in the high desert of eastern Utah, Arches National Park is home to the world’s most spectacular display of natural stone arches—over two thousand in all. Watch for porcupines, desert cottontails, and songbirds, all of which may be seen moving through this dazzling landscape. Delicate Arch is one of the park’s most popular sites, along with the Devil’s Garden and the Windows. The park’s highest arch is Double Arch, and its highest peak is Elephant Butte. Visitors aren’t allowed to get too close to Landscape Arch, because it’s very fragile and in danger of collapsing.

6

BADLANDS National Park SOUTH DAKOTA

A dazzling and diverse landscape featuring pillars, bluffs, and canyons, Badlands National Park is home to an impressive natural barrier called the Wall, which separates the upper and lower grassland regions of western South Dakota. The Notch Trail, which is 1.5 miles round-trip, can be challenging due to the log ladder you must climb during your trek. After completing that trail, you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the White River Valley. Over half of the park is grassland, where bighorn sheep make their way along the slopes and bison graze. This terrain was long considered a difficult area in which to survive, and the Lakota people called it mako sica, which means “bad lands”—hence its name.

8

BIG BEND National Park TEXAS

As remote as it is vast, Big Bend National Park covers over 1,200 square miles. The park’s name comes from the fact that it’s situated where the Rio Grande makes a “big bend” southward. Most of Big Bend consists of the Chihuahuan Desert, but the middle of the park is marked by the Chisos Mountains, capped by the 7,825-foot Emory Peak. After admiring the mountains, you can view the impressive chasm of the Santa Elena Canyon. This park is known for its biodiversity: the slopes of the Chisos are dotted with oak trees, while creosote bushes grow in the Chihuahuan Desert. In terms of wildlife, more species of birds, bats, butterflies, ants, scorpions, and cacti have been seen here than in any other national park.

10

CARLSBAD CAVERNS National Park NEW MEXICO

Carlsbad Caverns is one of the world’s most famous cave systems, and there are roughly 119 smaller caves located within its boundaries. One of the most impressive of these is the Big Room. The largest single cave chamber by volume in North America, the Big Room covers 8.2 acres and is reachable via a self-guided tour. A stroll within its confines leads you to iconic sights like the Painted Grotto. As one might expect from a cave system, Carlsbad Caverns is home to bats (including Brazilian free-tailed bats), and it’s also a habitat for cougars and cave swallows. Above ground, the park is marked with a tangle of hiking trails through the Guadalupe Mountains and the Chihuahuan Desert.

22

DEATH VALLEY National Park

CALIFORNIA & NEVADA

Death Valley National Park is a place where imposing mountains tower over striated canyons, and a vast, shimmering salt-pan floor offers a breathtaking sight. Zabriskie Point, just 4.5 miles from the Furnace Creek Visitor Center, offers a breathtaking view of the mudstone, clay, and siltstone hills down below. Close enough to visit in the same day is Artists Palette, a uniquely colorful vista thanks to volcanic deposits. In the park’s north area, you’ll find the Eureka Dunes, the tallest sand dunes in California. The park is home to lively bighorn sheep and mule deer. But stay hydrated when you visit, because the region’s “low” temperature is often above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

32

HOT SPRINGS National Park ARKANSAS

In the 19th and 20th centuries, “bathhouse” spas in this region, such as the ones preserved at Hot Springs National Park, offered their silica-rich waters to treat aches and pains. The surviving bathhouses are in an area of the park dubbed Bathhouse Row. Buckstaff Bathhouse, built in 1912, is still in use, and offers everything from thermal water soaks to hydrotherapy. To the east of Bathhouse Row are numerous hiking trails that help visitors ascend Hot Springs Mountain. At the mountaintop, a tower yields marvelous 360-degree views. And there are various places around the park where you can drink its spring water, which is some of the highest-quality water on Earth.

64

KINGS CANYON National Park CALIFORNIA

Kings Canyon National Park’s namesake canyon is 8,220 feet deep, making it one of the deepest canyons in North America. Wildlife in Kings Canyon includes the California quail, which is the state bird, and the park lays claim to the tallest and oldest sequoia trees in the world. Among them is the General Grant Tree. Apart from being 1,650 years old, this tree is also the second tallest sequoia on Earth. Visitors can walk the General Grant Tree trail, which takes you through the sequoia grove. Or you can hop on the John Muir Trail for a long-distance hike that rewards you with gorgeous mountain scenery.

76

REDWOOD National Park CALIFORNIA

Providing the right environment for the mighty coast redwood to thrive, Redwood National Park boasts a grove of treasured redwoods whose height sometimes exceeds 350 feet. In 1929, the Stout Memorial Grove was one of the first groups of coastal redwoods marked for preservation. Another, the Lady Bird Johnson Grove, is a tribute to the First Lady of the same name who dedicated this national park in 1968. You can find that grove by taking Bald Hills Road, which will also lead you to Redwood Creek Overlook, a magnificent place to watch the sunset. Flowers that grow beneath the redwood canopy include the redwood sorrel and tiger lily. Animals spotted in the park area include Roosevelt elk and flying squirrels.
