dedicated to my most devoted fans Some people say “Stop and smell the flowers”… I say “Stop and knit the flowers.” Mother Nature’s most beautiful offspring come in an infinite variety of colors and shapes. They make people happy at joyous times and comfort them at sad times. I have always loved flowers and frequently make them a part of my designs. They enhance a garment, make it happy and more beautiful, and will never die. They can be used as a subtle accent or be the entire motif of a knitted piece. Included in instructions are yarn suggestions and colors used for the samples. I encourage you to experiment with a variety of yarns and colors. We have so many interesting yarns to choose from in our market today, as components to create a beautiful bouquet, a corsage, or a whole field of flowers. I have always wanted to create a book of knitted flowers, and it was a joy working in my botanical yarn garden. Come on in and knit the flowers–they will last forever!

5Stitch Pattern Flowers chapter one

The following flowers are made with a variety of stitch patterns. The first few rows of a ruffle, twist, scallop, fringe or rib are worked to establish the outer edge of the flower. The final few rows are worked in decreases that shape the flower and form the center. The flowers can be layered, and stems and leaves may be added. Bobbles, bangles, buttons and beads sewn to the centers bring the flowers an extra touch of beauty. These flowers are quick and easy to make and can be used as adornments on anything you desire.

One of the pleasures of writing this book was the wonderful

people I was able to work with. I was helped by the Soho staff, who kept the organization and production on track. So, a dozen roses for Trisha Malcolm, Carla Scott, Erica Smith, Lillian Esposito, Rachel Stein and Veronica Manno. And a special bouquet for Chi Ling Moy, my fabulous art director, and to Jennifer Levy and Trudy Giordano for the lovely photography. Corsages for Eileen Curry, Nancy Henderson and Herris Stenzel, who are always there for me. A wreath of gratitude to all the yarn companies who generously supplied yarn for the project. A garden of thanks to my readers and students—and finally a poppy to my husband, Howard, who has bought flowers for me for many years.
