Introduction
Hi there! I’m Ashli! Welcome to my world of amigurumi—a craft that has allowed me to blend my love of crochet, video games, and animals into adorable creations. My journey with crochet began in 2015 when I was browsing the internet looking at video game fan arts and crafts. I stumbled across some images of handmade dolls of my favorite video game characters and learned that they were crocheted. This blew my mind! At that time, I thought crochet was just for making blankets and scarves. I had no idea that it could be used to make adorable plushies! I went straight out and bought some hooks and a few skeins of yarn. Then, through the power of the internet and free YouTube tutorials, I learned how to crochet and make amigurumi. What started as an occasional hobby quickly turned into a creative outlet that let me explore new ideas and push my boundaries. A few years in, I became comfortable enough to freehand my own amigurumi designs and soon after I started writing patterns to share with others. In 2017, I launched 1Up Crochet, a website where I could showcase my work and connect with fellow crocheters. I then began to write my own patterns and shared them for free while also offering tips and advice, hoping to inspire others to pick up a hook and dive into the world of amigurumi. I opened my Etsy shop, also called 1Up Crochet, in 2019, where I now sell my designs. Many of my projects are inspired by my lifelong love of video games, a passion that began when my parents brought home a Sega Genesis with a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog when I was just three years old. When I’m not crocheting, I’m often playing video games or tinkering with broken controllers and consoles, breathing new life into old favorites. As a military spouse, I’ve had the chance to live in many
states across the US, from snowy Alaska to sunny Florida (where I currently live), always accompanied by my husband and our two dogs. No matter where life takes me, crochet and gaming are my constants, providing endless inspiration for my designs. This book is a celebration of creativity, playfulness, the joy of making something with your own two hands, and, of course, geekiness. Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or a curious beginner, this book is designed to guide you through the world of geeky amigurumi. Chapter 1 features patterns for thirteen adorable animals wearing cozy hoodies. Chapter 2 takes things up a notch with seven playful costumes that can be applied to any of the animals. In Chapter 3, you’ll find patterns for six fun accessories, from a retro game console to a pair of stylish glasses, to give your creations even more personalization. And in Chapter 4, you’ll find step-by-step instructions for all the stitches and techniques in the book, for reference if you’re a newbie to crochet or just need a brush-up. I hope this book inspires you to get creative and bring these nerdy, playful designs to life! READ THIS SECTION BEFORE YOU START Please be sure to read this, as the information applies to most all the patterns in the book and can affect the results you get.
Gau g e You’ll see that I don’t specify gauge in my patterns because these are plushies and hitting an exact gauge isn’t necessary (though, if you want to know for reference, using an E/4 (3.5mm) hook and medium weight yarn, my gauge is 19 sc and 19 rows = 4"/10cm square). However, that said, one of the things I love about crocheting amigurumi is making all those nice tight lines of stitches. To do that, you want to keep firm, even tension on your yarn as you are crocheting. I also use a variant of single crochet (where you “yarn under" instead of “yarn over"; see page 135 for how to do it) that results in an even tighter stitch (if you are an experienced crocheter you’ll be able to see the difference in the photos of the projects). It’s totally optional whether you do it or not; your geeky animals will still look great if you use a regular single crochet. Consistent tension is also important in order for your animal’s hoodie to fit its head properly. If it’s not fitting the way you would like it to, the best thing to do is to crochet it again, using a different hook size to get the fit you want. If the hood is too small, crochet it with a slightly larger hook, like an F/5 (3.75mm) or G/6 (4mm). If it’s too baggy, use a slightly smaller hook, like a D/3 (3.25mm).

Ashli Hayes is a self-taught crocheter with a passion for crafting unique amigurumi designs inspired by video games and animals. Since learning to crochet in 2015 through YouTube tutorials, Ashli has honed her skills, eventually creating her own patterns and launching her 1Up Crochet on Etsy in 2019, where she sells downloadable patterns. A lifelong gamer, Ashli’s love for video games began at age three with a Sega Genesis and continues today, alongside a knack for refurbishing gaming controllers and consoles.
