Coloring Tips & Ideas
These tips are for coloring with alcohol markers and acrylic paint pens. When using alcohol markers, place a sheet beneath the page to prevent bleed through. I find that a plastic school report cover works well.
SHADING & HIGHLIGHTS
Use an alcohol marker to make a light base color.
BLENDING COLORS
Begin with yellow and red, leaving white space between them.
Start with a light green, with upward strokes.
Begin shading with a midtone of the same color.
Fill in the white space with orange.
Deepen the shading with a darker tone; blend by going over it with the midtone.
Blend by going over the edges with the lightest color, yellow. Work quickly while it is still damp.
Add a medium tone green. Add a layer of dark green strokes.
Add highlights with a white acrylic paint pen or white paint.
Add dark red along the right side; blend in with a lighter red. Lift a highlight from the yellow with a blender pen.
Use a paint pen for the lightest strokes.

Jane Maday is an artist, illustrator, and popular Instagrammer (@Jane Maday). A graduate of the Ringling College of Art and Design, she was recruited as an illustrator by Hallmark Cards.
