introduction When I wrote Knitting On the Edge, the first book in what would become a trilogy of books on knitted edgings, I had no idea what a wild success it would become. Knitters of all skill levels have made all three books in the series perennial bestsellers, and the books have been translated into many languages. The kind messages that I have received from knitters around the world have validated all the hard work put into those books. Shortly after the first book was released I began hearing from my crochet friends: “Hey, where’s our edging book?” Well, it took three years to get there, but here it is. I’ve been inspired by the patterns in the knit book and have given them a new twist (pun intended) to translate them beautifully into the art of crocheting. You’ll find ribs, bobbles, ruffles, classic vintage, fringes, flora and lots more, along with original design pieces that I’ve created just for this book. I’ve covered traditional techniques and come up with some of my own, and have given you easy-to-follow instructions for each and every edging. I have always been a fan of all kinds of edgings, and I believe that they can take handcrafted pieces from ordinary to extraordinary, or from special to sublime. I think with a little effort and a little imagination, you’ll soon be enhancing your pieces as never before. Most of all, I hope this book inspires you to try your own variations and innovations. In order to illustrate what yarn size and texture

can do, the following swatches show the same leaf edging design, knitted with a variety of

needles and yarns, to create totally different looks.

I used needles ranging from a #2 to a #15 and made the swatches with baby wool, cotton, chenille, boucle, linen, silk, angora, eyelash, ribbon wool, silk/wool, alpaca, bulky alpaca, and thick-and-thin bulky wools.

Sewing needle and matching thread Small (large) ring Attach yarn to ring. Row 1 Ch 1, 15 (19) sc in ring. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. Make desired number of rings in your choice of colors. Place rings in random order and sew together. Heading (Optional) Make a ch to desired length. Row 1 1 dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch to end. Turn. Row 2 Ch 3, 1 dc in next dc and in each dc to end. Turn. Fasten off. Sew rings to project.
