Yes, you really can learn to draw fashions and figures. And have fun doing it too! Your creativity will sparkle as your ability grows and your drawings improve. All artists at every level can benefit from this book. Whether you’re a beginner interested in basic drawing, an aspiring manga artist, or someone who just enjoys sketching and coloring, the techniques in this book will help you. Learning how to enhance the overall style of your subjects is an invaluable skill, and something you’ll find rewarding creatively. In this book, I’ll show you exactly how to do that with simplified and finished examples. You’ll learn how to draw idealized versions of the head and body, how to draw poses with attitude, how to create a great variety of fashionable outfits and accessories, when to indicate textures, and the smart application of color. Easy-to-use templates appear throughout the book. The templates are simple shapes, springboards from which the drawings are created. These will get you started in the right direction. I will also point out key concepts along the way. Are you ready to get started?

Introduction

BeginnersFashionDesign_FinalPass_pg1_9.indd 9

2/7/19 1:12 PM

the Basics

The head starts with a basic outline. As you draw, keep in mind that facial expressions in fashion illustrations should reflect the overall vibe of the clothing on display. Whether it is confident, happy, slinky, carefree, defiant, or wistful, the expression works together with the outfit.

Simple Head Shape The foundation starts simple. You can make changes later, such as drawing higher cheekbones or developing a specific expression.

The eyes are drawn halfway down the head.

Exaggerate the length and weight of the eyelashes.

Lightly indicate the nostrils and draw thick lips curving up slightly at the ends. The basic head is symmetrical. Sketch loosely, and never be afraid to erase.

12

BeginnersFashionDesign_FinalPass_pg10_144.indd 12

2/7/19 2:45 PM

The bangs fall to the eyebrows.

How Much Detail Should I Use? Place the emphasis where you want to draw the viewer’s eye. For example, the eyelashes and lips are usually thickened and pronounced, while the nose and ears are drawn with fewer lines.

Add a few short eyelashes at the bottom of the eyelids.

Draw the hair as a straight bob.

13

BeginnersFashionDesign_FinalPass_pg10_144.indd 13

2/7/19 2:45 PM

Skirts

Skirts bring a lot of versatility to a wardrobe. They can dress up a casual shirt or pull together a more polished outfit. Let’s take a look at how to draw some go-to skirt styles.

Establish the basic proportions: • Small head • Square shoulders • Shortened torso • Long legs

The area between the ribs and the hips is where the belt will be drawn.

Bell Skirt Knee-length hem

The outline of the bellshaped skirt serves as a good canvass for a splashy pattern.

Straighten the arm.

Draw flowing hair below the head. Long sleeves bell out from the elbow.

60

BeginnersFashionDesign_FinalPass_pg10_144.indd 60

2/7/19 2:46 PM

Hints and Hems Here are a few pointers to keep in mind: • The top of the blouse is curved, not straight. • The hips jut out from the beltline. • Draw the sleeves as ovals. • The hem is a wavy line.

Two-toned bag Black shoes coordinate with the belt and the bag.

Sleeveless with a Slit

If you want to jazz up your drawing in a way that doesn’t change the nature of the dress, but provides additional impact, drawing a mid-thigh slit up the side is an economical way to do it. It gives a traditional dress a bit of attitude. The shoulders lift when the hands are on the hips.

Scoop neck with straps.

Fingers wrap over and in front of the hips.

Knee length

Suggest a slight shadow.

Both feet point forward.

76

BeginnersFashionDesign_FinalPass_pg10_144.indd 76

2/7/19 2:46 PM

Clothing Close-Up Use ovals as the basis for the strap holes.

These guidelines demonstrate that the dress needs to be visualized as a rounded form.

Don’t allow the slit to alter the overall curved direction of the guidelines.

Models can strike a casual pose with precision.

77

The Suit—Front View

Here’s the current look for a suit. The jacket is shorter than in previous styles, and the lapels are cut wider. The pants are comfortably loose, but not oversized. The colors can be edgier, even for conventional suits. For example, this is a cobalt blue, not your dad’s navy.

The lapel can overlap the pocket.

A balanced pose, with shoulders and hips held horizontally

The jacket flares out past the outline of the torso.

Clothing Close-Up The collar folds forward on both sides.

Add shading to indicate depth.

The far shoe is partially hidden, indicating distance from the viewer.

102

BeginnersFashionDesign_FinalPass_pg10_144.indd 102

2/7/19 2:47 PM

The folds are irregular and small.

The jacket opens at the bottom.

This is the classic catalog look for men’s suits.

Folds collapse on each other above the shoe.

103

2/7/19 2:47 PM

Here are your basic starting points. Where you end up is completely up to you, your imagination, and your fashion sense.
