Dedication

When I walked into your office years ago, you hired me within minutes, and instantly gave me projects to make, editorials to shoot, how-tos to hand model, copy to write, magazines to edit, and the platform to be creative. You just got me. Those glory days at Soho were legendary.

You showed me that great conversation is where it all starts, and beauty lives everywhere, especially in a fragrant blossom, hand-tied bouquet, or a garden in full bloom. And that a fun and lively lunch could roll into 5 o’clock drinks; better to finish the conversation and the wine.

Because why be vanilla when you can be colorful and creative and beautiful? Thanks for everything. The stars are shining bright, and I am forever grateful.

The journey around the globe kicks off here, so let the mixing and magic start where cocktails became couture.

Africa

Feel the rhythm of these incredible lands as you drink up the colors and flavors.

Asia

Extraordinary libations made with local ingredients are a perfect match to this continent’s vibrant, neon-electric surroundings!

Oceania

Discover the Land Down Under and quench your thirst with some top cocktails.

North America

From Market Street to Bourbon Street, cocktails here are a melting pot of cultures, places, and people.

South

America

Everything flows to Latin rhythms and the energy is as electrifying as the social scene; the cocktails are no exception.

Caribbean & Central America

Create your own party paradise with these fruit-filled libations from nature’s bounty.

Introduction

Not long ago I was enjoying a cocktail with my publisher. We were talking about how travel is so important to people, especially new destinations and experiential travel—seeing and experiencing new places and immersing the senses: from the views to activities to the culture, cuisine and cocktails, of course! I told him how it all started at 5 o’clock . . .

. . . on a trip to Paris. I was sipping a champagne cocktail in a fabulous hotel lobby bar, listening to music and munching on those delectable bar snacks. I suddenly thought, this is what we all need—to visit spectacular places around the globe and experience their signature 5 o’clock cocktail. Then I thought, who but only the jet set could manage this world tour of mixology?

At that moment, my quest turned into a more important one: Could I recreate this global cocktail experience and make it one that everyone could enjoy? The end result would have to include four things: exotic locales around the globe; their consummate local libations; snacks or nibbles; and, of course, accompanying music selections.

I wanted to write a book that travels for you, and here it is, complete with a playlist of world rhythms. After all, this is about entertaining your friends, and why not do it with international flair?

Flip through and see where your mood takes you—you’ll find amazing destinations with cocktails, mocktails, snack suggestions, and music to enjoy. To start you on this journey, I’ve included a packing list of must-have travel items: essentials for your bar cart, barware basics, and syrup recipes.

Grab your cocktail shaker and let’s fly. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!

Cheers, Colleen

Jimmy Buffett

If there is anyone who knew when it was 5 o’clock somewhere, it was Jimmy Buffett. He was one of the original wanderlusters searching for the perfect bar, a strong cocktail, a connection, and conversation.

He told the stories of island dreamers, pirates, and beach bums, hoping through music to inspire the everyday person from all corners of the globe to kick back for a minute, and not to take life too seriously. He masterfully spoke to themes of curiosity for the world out there and escaping the ordinary, and finding joy in the simple things.

Mr. Buffett recorded dozens of studio albums. His song “Margaritaville” inspired him to launch a lifestyle brand that consists of hotels, retirement communities, restaurants, and bars. But it was the song he recorded with his friend Alan Jackson, “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere,” the anthem for good times, that went on to win a Grammy and a CMA award. The song’s message gives us all pause, allowing ourselves to take a minute, meet a friend, and mix up a cocktail that’s tall and strong, no matter where you might be or the time of day.

Because wanderlust is alive and well, thanks in part to Jimmy, and it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere.

It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere

Global Bar Cart Essentials

Cocktail mixing on an international level takes a beat. Start with the basics and layer up with liqueurs, brandies, and region-specific spirits. Think of this list as your passport to a worldwide happy hour.

Hint: Save this list on your phone and add to your collection over time.

Bitters

New companies have inventive collections; a few of my favorites are Mister Bitters, and All The Bitter, which is a nonalcoholic brand.

Bar Lingo

Dash

A very small amount, usually splashed into the drink.

Float/Floater

A topper for a drink. For instance, a small pour of dark rum or whipped cream for frozen or coffee drinks.

Muddle

Crushing fruit and/or herbs in the bottom of a tall glass with a wooden pestle or “muddler” to release their juices, oils, and flavors in a concentrated fashion.

Strain

To pour through a sieve. After a drink has been mixed, straining is often required to discard any bits of fruit or seeds. Most cocktail shakers come with a strainer. If yours does not, any fine mesh strainer will do.

Garnish

Any decorative element added to a cocktail, such as fruit, olives, herbs, coffee beans, flowers, or chocolate shavings. Get creative and have fun!

Shaking

Place all of the ingredients in the shaker and fill with ice halfway. Put the top on tight and shake it like you mean it. Thirty seconds is perfect for most drinks; any longer might dilute the cocktail.

Dry Shake

Place all ingredients in shaker without ice. Shake to mix ingredients and create froth. Add ice and shake again. Strain into glasses.

Swizzle Stick

Fancy name for a stirrer. The swizzle stick is sometimes made from sugar or honey, so it has a dual purpose: adding sweetness to the drink as it dissolves, while mixing bits of herbs or fruit that may have settled to the bottom of the glass.

Caribbean & Central America

Acknowledgments

Raising a glass to all who played a part of this special edition. I‘m grateful and I appreciate that you chose to take this global journey with me once more.

First, a special thanks to Jack Deutsch, my friend and talented photographer. We’ve been working together since the early days, and you always work to find the magic in every shot. Your advice and collaboration mean the world to me.

Thank you to my publisher, Mixed Media Resources (formerly Soho Publishing) for believing that cocktails are a craft, and mixing a great cocktail is a timeless craft. My editor, Rachel Chlebowski—thank you for being a great partner, keeping me on track, and turning into a huge global cocktail enthusiast! Thank you to MMR’s editorial and publishing team, especially Irene Ledwith, for her collaboration and artistic input.

To Steph, for always stepping up and lending me props from her collection or whipping items off her shelves, “just in case this might work.” Your style and generosity know no bounds.

Thanks to my family, who are the first ones to volunteer for recipe testing and tasting. You never seem to mind the influx of props and syrups and mixers that take over the kitchen and refrigerator. It seems like we’ve gone from pompoms to pomegranate-ginger margaritas in a flash.
