o one can put feelings inside someone else. Everyone originates his or her own thoughts and emotions. We rarely look at something or someone in our lives objectively. The realization that it isn’t the person that is making you happy, or unhappy, but your idea of who they are, restores your inner power. Other people’s actions cease to have an effect on you.

The easiest way to have joy and peace during the holidays is to let go of the attachment to whether something is good or bad. One Christmas Eve, I was stuck at Dallas Airport for eight hours. I missed my family’s Christmas Eve dinner, and was stranded in an airport. After hearing the announcement of the delay, I was instantly angry, frustrated and upset. My heart started racing, I started to feel sorry for myself because I was single and traveling alone on Christmas Eve. I stopped my rambling thoughts for a moment and became present. I made a conscious decision to shift my perspective and accept the situation. My thoughts weren’t going to change the departure time, or the fact that I was single and alone.

I decided I could spend eight hours in anger, or eight hours in peace. I watched the people, witnessed their boredom and frustration and felt removed from mine. I went into a restaurant and sat next to a man at the bar who was also experiencing a long delay. We had an amazing conversation.

He was very depressed, going through a divorce and wondering where his life was leading. Our discussion brought him to a calmer emotional state. I felt blessed that I was there for him. We could have spent a few hours complaining about the weather and the airlines. Instead, we had a conversation about life and true joy. At first, I did not know how the eight hours

would turn out. My mind quickly made a false assumption of how I “should be upset” that I could have easily lived into.

Instead of trying to fix it, I approached the situation from a clean slate of peace and was able to create my own experience.

As you go through the holiday season, your mind will be constantly making assessments of what is right and wrong.

Be present with your thoughts. There is a space between the mind chatter that is silent and peaceful, where joy lives. Joy is not found in the gifts, eggnog, desserts or holiday turkey. Nothing outside of you brings the silence; it is a natural state within.

Experience the holiday shopping crowds, the travel, family interactions with a feeling of acceptance and nonattachment. See beyond the words and actions of others and find beneath it all a sense of unity and love. Before adopting a 401(k) plan, the employer should first consider the administrative requirements and any additional administrative costs that may be incurred with this type of plan.

Savings Incentive Match Plans for Employees A SIMPLE is for businesses that have 100 or fewer employees and do not currently contribute to a retirement plan. It enables a business owner to establish a 401(k)-type savings plan without the typical costs and complexities associated with a traditional 401(k). A SIMPLE plan can be established either as an IRA or as a 401(k) plan.

Employees can elect to contribute pre-tax dollars through a salary reduction agreement.

In addition, the employer is required to make contributions each year under one of two formulas.

Trans fat, made chemically from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, was not formally evaluated by the FDA for long-term health effects. This is because it was already in use in foods before FDA was created in 1958.

Trans fats occur naturally in beef and dairy, but in minuscule amounts. Health experts are worried about industrially produced trans fat.

Why are trans fats unhealthy?

Essentially, the chemical process of hydrogenation turns a healthy vegetable oil into an unhealthy one. The problem is our bodies don’t know what to do with man-made fats that wreak havoc on our health.

Trans fats are probably the most toxic fats ever known,

according to Dr. Walter Willet at Harvard School of Public Health. Trans fat raises your LDL (bad cholesterol) and lowers your HDL (good cholesterol) levels. A study with 80,000 nurses over 14 years showed that trans fat greatly increased risk of heart disease and was about four times worse than saturated fat.

Willett believes the amounts of trans fat we’re consuming is a recipe for a health disaster. “We know that people who consume high amounts of trans fats in a diet have arteries that become more rigid. This has been related to the risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly heart disease,” he says.

Saturated or animal fats used to be considered one of our worst food foes. Now scientists say trans fats are at least twice as bad for our health. If the trans fat in the U.S. diet were replaced by natural unsaturated fat (present before partial hydrogenation), there would be about a 40 percent reduction in diabetes, according to Willett. Studies have also linked a diet high in trans fat to North America’s number one killer - heart disease, and possibly adult onset diabetes and Alzheimer’s. If all that weren’t enough, a new study in the Journal of Nutrition and Cancer suggests there may be a link between trans fat and colon cancer.

he east metro area is full of Everyday Heroes, people who inspire, empower and, in general, make us want to try harder, live better and do more. We at TheGATE believe these persons deserve a bit of recognition. In the process, we hope they’ll make you strive to get out there and show the world how fabulous you are.

Diane Van Deren is a mother, a wife, a motivational speaker and an athlete. In February, she braved the below zero temperatures of Alaska to compete in the Iditarod.

Nine years ago, Diane underwent surgery to remove the right temporal lobe of her brain.

Diagnosed with epilepsy, she lived for 10 years with seizures that not only complicated her everyday life, but also threatened it. Since her surgery, she has not suffered another seizure.

She starts many mornings with a 26-mile jog, routinely competes in 100-mile trail races and this winter, she’ll be snowshoeing competitively. This makes walking around the block a few times seem really achievable.

What do you do?

I am a wife and mother of three children: Michael, Robin and Matt. There are a lot of things I enjoy doing, including, running 100mile trail races around the country, playing the guitar and singing. I am a motivational speaker and enjoy talking to many different types of groups and organizations around the country. I speak about the limitations we put on ourselves.

I enjoy talking about how we all have obstacles in our lives - mine was epilepsy.

While pregnant with my third child, I was diagnosed with epilepsy. The seizures made trying to raise a family and be an athlete quite

The doctors removed my right temporal lobe, and because of the impact of the seizures and my brain surgery, I now deal with a brain injury. Who/What inspires you?

People who live each day to the fullest inspire me. Those who don’t take life too seriously encourage me. Life is way too short to sweat the small stuff. I’m moved by those who set goals and live in the moment, realizing that each and every day is a gift.

What are you most passionate about?

I’m passionate about reaching out and helping others to achieve their goals. Success is not always about the win. Sometimes, what’s important is the journey one takes in order to get there, embracing life and facing challenges that we all endure along the way. I am a spokesperson for the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute at Children’s Hospital. This organization educates children on how to prevent brain injuries, by wearing helmets when they ride a bike.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

One would be leaving high school early to play professional tennis. It was the most wonderful experience. I was named All American in singles and doubles while attending college. I’m also proud of finishing the world’s

What is one of the tougher challenges/issues you have overcome?

Beating epilepsy. Epilepsy affects one in every 50 children and one in every 100 adults.

It is one of the top three neurological disorders.

Some of the causes of epilepsy are brain tumors, strokes, meningitis, and drug and alcohol abuse. Brain injury is the number one cause.

My epilepsy was caused by a childhood illness that produced a high fever in which I suffered a seizure lasting 45 minutes. Twenty-four years later, the scarring on my brain gave out and I began re-experiencing the seizures.

What is your guilty pleasure?

I love M&Ms and Gummi Bears. I load my pockets with these foods while racing. The Gummi Bears are great because they don’t melt in your pocket. I wouldn’t suggest carrying the M&Ms on a warm day.

How do you stay motivated?

I love being pushed - mentally and physically. I tend to set goals very high. I would like to write a book and tell my story on national television. I will continue to reach and strive for these goals until they are met.

What does fitness mean to you?

Fitness is being balanced, both physically and mentally, making good choices and respecting the human body, taking control over our own lives and not getting wrapped up in the pressures society puts on women. Fitness means remaining unique and healthy, staying active and eating well. There is no quick fix to being fit. No pill or drink will make me a better athlete. It is all done with discipline, hard work and passion.

The Power of Potassium P

otassium and sodium are minerals that play an important role in maintaining the body’s water and blood pH, allowing for proper nerve and muscle function.

When there is deficient potassium relative to sodium, the nerve and muscle function diminishes, the body becomes weak and muscles lose their tone; poor reflex response develops as does edema, high blood pressure and possible liver and/ or kidney dysfunction.

The average American eats at least twice the amount of sodium as potassium daily. This may not seem like a big deal, however, the recommendation is to eat at least five times more potassium than sodium. Virtually all whole, unprocessed plant and animal foods contain significantly more potassium than sodium. By eating the recommended seven to 11 servings of raw or cooked fruits and vegetables a day, and minimizing or

eliminating processed foods like chips, deli meats and fast foods, you bring the ratio of potassium to sodium in line. This transfers into better neurotransmission, muscle and organ function. It also helps create better workouts, more energy and wellbeing. The next time you’re at a party and the chips and dip are out, reach for the fruit and veggie tray.

n the last issue I wrote about using policosanol to lower high cholesterol instead of taking statin medications like Crestor and Lipitor. If you have had the discussion with your doctor and the decision was made to continue on your statin medication, the next step is to address side effects that come from these medications.

The biggest side effects are fatigue, severe pain and muscle weakness, and severe to lifethreatening renal and/or liver toxicity. Statin medications interfere in the metabolic pathway common to both cholesterol biosyntheses and CoQ10 synthesis, resulting in lower production of cholesterol (a good thing) and lower CoQ10 (a bad thing).

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10 or ubiquinone) is an essential component of the mitochondria of all cells in the body, and is involved in the making of energy for our body. Interfering with the production of this vital component may depress energy production causing intracellular damage. This intracellular damage is the cause of these side effects of fatigue and muscle pain,

which can often be severe. CoQ10 also aids circulation, stimulates the immune system, increases tissue oxygenation, and is important for regeneration of vitamin E in the body.

It is best to check with a qualified practitioner for dosing requirements as some doctors start with a loading dose and adjust as needed. Other medications that you are on may impact dosing too. CoQ10 is an antioxidant and should be kept away from light or air to prevent oxidization.
