SIVA AFI ONLINE FESTIVAL 2022

Aotearoa, ia tū fa’atasi!

Alofa atu

Welcome to our very first Siva Afi Online Festival March 2022.

One last thing from me, I would like to extend my aroha and alofa to all those who were unable to deliver for this year’s festival due to COVID-19. This includes the many performance troupes, individual artists, contractors, and creatives.

Words cannot completely express my gratitude to everyone who made this online event a success. It was a mammoth undertaking by our team of performers, filming crew and families, all while navigating the effects of COVID-19 in the community. In December 2021 we were grappling with what the current COVID-19 restrictions meant for our community. While adhering to Ministry of Health’s guidelines in keeping our people safe, we were very fortunate to be able to continue offering our FREE Siva Afi workshops with an open to all kaupapa. Siva Afi Online Festival is our testament in committing to our kaupapa of inclusion and celebrating our communities together. To the Honourable Carmel Sepuloni and Creative New Zealand, we thank you for the Wave Initiative Program, enabling our festival to reach new heights and increase our reach locally and internationally. The festival’s digital platform meant those participants unable to travel and attend the festival in person were still able to submit their competition piece online. It also gave us the opportunity to invite judges from overseas as panel members for the competition. Faafetai lava to Shona McCullagh, Ataahua Papa and Auckland Arts Festival as Siva Afi is again represented in this prestigious platform for the Arts in Auckland. The generosity of the Creative Communities Scheme meant we could again support engagement and wellbeing in the community through whanau orientated activities and programmes.

To our whanau in the Te Tairawhiti area, from the postponement and then cancellation of the Siva Afi Festival Gisborne October 2021 and now Auckland under RED Traffic Light System, we pray 2023 will bring blessings to you all. To Jayden Luapo, Sophia Uele and the Tautua Dance Academy in Wellington - it was a tough decision to make but ensuring the wellbeing of all of your whanau was our priority. All your fans in Auckland and the rest of Aotearoa will need to be patient for another 12months for Tautua Dance to debut at our 2023 festival. From Tau Afine Niue, Saintz Dance Academy, Aunuanua Dance Troupe, Tiare Nui Dance Collective, Siva Afi Whau, Siva Afi Māngere, Siva Afi Tairawhiti and Siva Afi Otara, thank you again for your support and sacrifices. Thank you again to everyone for tuning in and don’t forget to check out PolyX – Polynesian Night Markets online sales and PRE-ORDERS, happening right now.

online festival Ia manuia ma soifua, i le alofa ma le agalelei o le Atua. Tauanuu Amo Ieriko Siva Afi Online Festival Director

Māngere Ōtāhuhu Local Board and Māngere Town Centre, your unconditional support has made Māngere the home of Siva Afi in Tāmaki Makaurau. 3

Talofa , I just wanted to say thank you to the whole team on how organised you all were, and how you all are helping to grow the fireknife community in the New Zealand chapter. To all the Teine Toa, I applaud you, I know it’s not easy, but you all showed the true warrior within, that’s what I call courageous. You all are a part of laying the foundation of the female siva afi dancers, and in the years from now when it’s huge in the world you will look back and say, “I helped build that”. Keep spinning – there’s no limits to where you can go. Much love from Hawaii! David Galea’i

PERFORMANCE DUO Simone & Emillie In 2021, we were blessed while gathering in events and Polyx Night Markets with the amazing fire duo of Simone and Emillie. They have been highlights of our Siva Afi performances in Auckland and now we get to share their talents with a worldwide audience. SAU IA!

DRUMMING GROUP Wāhine Toa Siva Afi – Drumline Our wāhine drumline was established in October 2020, under the Siva Afi Māngere programme. It started off with two Pasifika mothers who continuously supported their daughters attending Siva Afi workshops. New beats and instruments have been added to the mix: the sound of the cabin bread tin, now synonymous with Siva Afi, together with the inclusion of the traditional wooden log the pātē. Under the direction of Helen Salu Pritchard (Lead Drummer).

PERFORMANCE GROUP Ka Pā Hula O Keaohololā / Kumu Hula Keonilei LEAALIIFANO Ka Pā Hula o Ke Ao Holo Lā, based in Auckland, Aotearoa practices the hula tradition and culture in the traditional style of Halau. We are not just a dance academy, but also encompass culture, world-view, values, language and life skill lessons. Under the direction of native Hawaiian, Keonilei Lealiifano, who has 35+ years hula experience, our Halau strives to perpetuate traditional Hawaiian art and values.

WĀHINE TOA AFI EXHIBITION Performance group 1: Wāhine Toa Siva Afi – Dancers Wāhine Toa Siva Afi was established in July 2020, under the Siva Afi Māngere workshop programmes. During the last seven months, even throughout the COVID-19 lockdown, the students have been learning this form of art from the basics to being able to dance a solo piece and perform team routines at community events. As New Zealand’s first all-women Siva Afi troupe, together with an all-wāhine drumline to accompany the fierce flames of Siva Afi, this is our beginning. Under the direction of Beka Sumeo Maiva-Tafiti and Mani Sumeo (Siva Afi Coach). Performance group 2: Ori Tahiti with Ahuuranui ‘IA ORA NA, MANAVA, E MAEVA! “Ori Tahiti with Ahuuranui” or OTWA is an all female Tahitian Dance group inviting all women over 18 years old to experience the beauty of the Tahitian culture through traditional songs, dances, arts, and crafts. Since August 2020, OTWA have grown from 20 to over 100 registered vāhine. OTWA incorporates an ‘Aparima (a slow dance similar to the Hawaiian Hula) and an ‘Ōte’a (a fast hip shaking dance). Born and raised in Tahiti, Ahuuranui brings her traditional knowledge and Tahitian dancing skills to Aotearoa.

TAUALUGA – CLOSING ITEM OF THE FESTIVAL Agnelia Brown Agnelia has a love and passion for Pacific Island dancing, always seeking opportunities to learn the art and history, not just of siva Samoa but of other cultural dances. SIVA AFI ONLINE FESTIVAL 2022

WĀHINE TOA AFI COMPETITORS Fransesca Tua – Siva Afi Otara Samoa Talofa lava, I am Fransesca Tua and I come from the islands of Samoa. Growing up I watched a lot of Polynesian cultural centre videos and took my first glance at siva afi. It was then, that sparked an interest in this performing arts. Back in 2020 I was able to watch a real live siva afi performance here in NZ. And this really inspired me to take on this challenge and pursue this form of art. I love the thrill and excitement it gives the audience as well as the adrenaline I get from performing. Ella Loheni-Stancil – Siva Afi Māngere Villages (Samoa): Amaile, Safotu Savaii, Poutasi Falealili, Siumu, Asau, Lefagaoalii Talofa lava, I am a proud Samoan and woman of the Pacific, ready to folafola my fala and share with you the dance of my people. Fully immersed in my culture, lovingly embraced as a tama’ita’i Samoa, I have been blessed with the opportunity to master the art of siva ailao afi. As a descendant of Taupou Talaleomalie and Taupou Lalepouli, I draw strength from them and the mana they so fiercely represent. Ma fa’aaloalo lava.

Fa’aolo (Olo) Suataga – Wāhine Toa Siva Afi & Siva Afi Māngere Villages (Samoa): Niusuatia Safata & Safune Savaii – Top 3 WTA Competition 2021 I have learnt so many things of my culture like Siva Samoa, traditional choir, etc. But I just wanted to learn something different. Learning this form of art, it’s a pleasure to me. I’m so proud to be one of the young Pasifika women who represent the Siva Afi nowadays. Women are strong. Women can lead! E āu Le ina’ilau a tamaita’i, a Samoan proverb which basically means that women can achieve anything and get things done wholeheartedly!

Iorina Tafili – Wellington Siva Afi Villages (Samoa) : Falevao/ Safotu/ Leulumoega lorina is in the final year of gaining her Bachelor of Creativity at Whitireia Performing Arts, Porirua, Wellington. Her passion for Siva Afi has grown more over the past couple of years since starting in her Siva Samoa classes in 2020. Iorina is excited and grateful for the opportunity to take her skills gained to the next level.

Sophia Uele – Wellington Siva Afi Villages (Samoa): Fasito’o Uta, Sinamoga, Sa’anapu Sophia Uele is a Whitireia Performing Arts graduate and now Co-Director of a Siva Sāmoa dance school called “Tautua Dance” based in Wellington.
