Owner John Medwedeff of Medwedeff Forge & Design in Murphysboro, IL works on the restoration of The Paul and Virginia Fountain. The fountain was donated by the Class of 1887 and is being restored by the Class of 1965. Michael Hanes, a class of 1965 representative, speaks fondly of the fountain, saying: “Any time students were heading to class for tests on campus, they would throw a penny in the fountain for luck. It’s a nostalgic memory to see the fountain. It has a great deal of whimsy, and it makes our hearts glad to know that generations will continue to see the pair bestowing good luck upon us as they stand quietly in the center of campus.”

Last year alone, loyal donors contributed nearly $9 million in cash and in-kind donations to the SIU Foundation. Total giving at this level reflects the strong allegiance, passion and commitment that our alumni and friends have for SIU. I am inspired when I learn how our donors’ lives have been transformed by SIU, and how these caring people want to give back to the university that made a difference for them. This joy of giving is why I am proud to be president of the Foundation’s board of directors. This year’s annual report shares a few of these stories to give you better insight into why the commitment of alumni, staff and students runs so deep. The motto “Once a Saluki, Always a Saluki” rings true throughout these pages. In fiscal year 2016, the Foundation transferred $8,850,596 to SIU. That’s a 5 percent increase over fiscal year 2015. Since 2010, the Foundation’s assets have grown by $42,047,439 and the market value of Foundation endowments has grown by $39,060,789. We have great things in store for 2017 as well, including an “SIU Day of Giving” and the launch of our own crowd-funding website salukifunder.siu.edu. The future looks promising, and your continued support and donations will help the SIU Foundation to focus on student success. SOLID LEADERSHIP

SIU Foundation Elects New Board Members In Fiscal Year 2016 Four alumni of Southern Illinois University have joined the SIU Foundation’s Board of Directors. They are serving three-year terms that will conclude June 30, 2018. The board governs the SIU Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization that provides alumni and friends a means to invest in the university. Established in 1942, the foundation solicits and administers gifts from private sources in support of SIU Carbondale’s academic mission. Private funding is generated through annual giving, planned giving, major giving, corporate and foundation relations, and campaigns.

Harold Bardo, a native of Sparta, Illinois, earned two degrees from SIU Carbondale: a bachelor’s in history (1962) and a Ph.D. in education (1972). Both are from SIU Carbondale’s College of Education and Human Services. Bardo also earned a master’s degree in counselor education from SIU Edwardsville in 1969. As a student-athlete, he earned letters in basketball and competing in track. Including his years as a student, Bardo has been affiliated with the university for more than 50 years. He joined SIU Carbondale’s faculty in 1968 as an instructor in educational psychology and retired as director of SIU Carbondale’s medical/dental education preparatory program (MEDPREP) in May 2014. Bardo joined the MEDPREP program in 1984, serving as its director from 1984 to 1999 and again from 2001 until his retirement in 2014. He was SIU Carbondale’s NCAA faculty representative for 15 years and served as the university’s interim athletic director in 1999 and 2000. Bardo returned in December 2014 to serve as the university’s interim athletic director. Bardo received the university’s Lindell W. Sturgis Memorial Public Service Award in 2014 and served that year as grand marshal at SIU’s Homecoming. In honor of his decades of service to SIU, the Harold Bardo Medical Student Scholarship Endowment was established. Bardo and his wife, Lana, reside in Carbondale and are life members of the SIU Alumni Association.

Chicago native Randy Daniels has enjoyed a prestigious career in New York politics, journalism and public relations. He is managing director for Pickwick Capital Partners LLC, located in New York. Daniels graduated from SIU Carbondale in 1973 from the College of Mass Communications and Media Arts. He earned a bachelor’s degree in radio-television and serves on the MCMA dean’s National Industry Council. In 2008, he established the Randy A. Daniels Scholarship for Excellence in Communication Fund, to be split evenly between MCMA students in financial need and others who have attained academic excellence. He has expressed his appreciation for how SIU has made a profound difference in his life, and has said he would not be where he is today without the education he received from SIU. Daniels was appointed secretary of state in New York by Gov. George Pataki in April 2001. In this capacity he also held a number of other positions, including chairman of the New York State Real Estate Board, the New York State 911 board for wireless emergency calls, and as a member of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Task Force. Early in his career, he served as a national correspondent for CBS News based in New York, and was one of the network’s first black correspondents. Daniels is married to New York State Supreme Court Justice Sallie Manzanet-Daniels.

Adaire Putnam, a Chicago native, earned a bachelor’s degree in speech communications and a minor in business from SIU Carbondale before later earning her MBA from the University of Notre Dame. She served on the SIU College of Business’ external advisory board for several years, including serving in the role of chairman. She was also on the marketing advisory board. She has served as an externship sponsor for SIU Carbondale students, and has been noted saying that she enjoys helping students obtain their first position of employment while they are still in school. She has traveled to the Carbondale campus several times to speak to students and participate in various campus activities. Adaire is a respected communications professional with more than 30 years experience building and protecting the reputations of some of the world’s largest companies and brands. She specializes in developing strategies and programs that engage internal and external stakeholders; showcasing clients’ commitments to responsible business practices through CSR and other initiatives; and helping ensure that clients have strong issues/crisis preparedness processes in place. She is currently the owner and president of Putnam Communications. Putnam, who received the SIU Inspiring Women of Achievement Award in 2007, also is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America. She resides in Douglas, Michigan.

Baer has plans to establish three more endowed

scholarships in the near future. One scholarship will go to the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice and the other two will go to the Department of Sociology in honor of Baer’s wife.

34% SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS The SIU Foundation accepts contributions in the form of cash, securities and real estate or personal property. Many corporations will match the contribution of employees, officers, directors and, in some instances, spouses and retirees. The SIU Foundation also accepts various types of planned gifts, whereby the donor makes a gift commitment during his or her lifetime that will benefit the university. Planned gifts are in the form of bequests, gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and life agreements. The foundation’s goal is to increase private support to enhance the university’s mission of being a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate research

ENDOWMENT INVESTMENTS The SIU Foundation receives endowment contributions and invests them into the endowment investment pool for perpetuity. An annual distribution of a portion of the revenue generated from the endowment accounts is transferred to corresponding current accounts and used according to donors’ restrictions. MISSION STATEMENT The Southern Illinois University Foundation was established in 1942 to solicit, receive, hold and administer gifts from private sources for educational purposes. The SIU Foundation provides alumni and other friends as a means to invest in the future of their University. The Foundation is an independent, nonprofit corporation, which exists solely to further the mission of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. It is a designated 501 (c)3 organization with appropriate approval from the Internal Revenue Service to issue tax deductible receipts for private gifts received to support Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The mission of the SIU Foundation is to maximize private support for SIU Carbondale to assist the University in achieving its long-range goals. As outlined in the Strategic Plan, the activities, programs, and efforts of the SIU Foundation for the next two years will be driven by five priority areas. These areas are developing next wave fundraising programs, foster and improving relationships with key constituency groups, recruiting and retaining strong, high-capability staff, creating comprehensive marketing and communication strategies, and implementing board governance and leadership structures. Throughout the coming years, the SIU Foundation will continue to raise money with the help of others, praise our quality board and staff, and tell our story.
