have been honored to serve as president of the SIU Foundation Board of Directors for the 2015 fiscal year. It

was so rewarding to see firsthand how giving back can create possibilities for many individuals touched by the university on a daily basis. This year’s annual report provides you with insight on the tremendous way in which donors are making a positive difference at SIU. As you turn the pages, you will read about scholarships and how they contribute to student success. An example that hits home with me is the Paul D. Sarvela Endowed Scholarship, established in memory of a man who devoted nearly three decades of his career to leadership roles at SIU. Paul’s devotion to students is a huge part of his legacy, and others have chosen to follow suit. I think you will be impressed by the longtime philanthropy of

Bob and Beth Gower, who have been extremely loyal to SIU’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Additionally, PotashCorp, the world’s largest fertilizer company, is helping students prepare for life after college through extensive and pertinent research opportunities.

SIU has a significant number of students who have been in the military. Some alumni

and donors see the service given by these veterans, and those who are actively serving, as an inspiration and source of pride. Their generosity assists our military students as they pursue their degrees.

Lastly, you’ll read about how gifts supporting our School of Medicine have made

a difference through the detection and improved treatment of cancer. The school also is helping individuals with disabilities. Support of the School of Medicine is having a significant impact on the quality of health in Southern Illinois and beyond.

These are just some examples of how you – our alumni and donors – make an impact.

SOLID LEADERSHIP

SIU Foundation Elects New Board Members In Fiscal Year 2015 Seven alumni of Southern Illinois University have joined the SIU Foundation’s Board of Directors. They are serving three-year terms that will conclude June 30, 2017. The board governs the SIU Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization that provides alumni and friends a means to invest in the university. Established in 1942, the foundation solicits and administers gifts from private sources in support of SIU Carbondale’s academic mission. Private funding is generated through annual giving, planned giving, major giving, corporate and foundation relations, and campaigns.

Barbara Blacklock, a 1989 university studies graduate of SIU, is the managing director of investments at Wells Fargo Advisors in Carbondale. Blacklock enjoys public speaking and has been a Carbondale resident for more than 30 years. She also supports the Women’s Center, the SIU External Advisory Board, the SIH Foundation Cancer Center (Hope is Home) and Trinity Christian School. Blacklock was inducted into the SIU Business School Hall of Fame in 2014.

Robert C. Bleyer earned a master’s degree in business administration in from SIU in 1992. He is president, CEO, CFO and board member for the Bank of Carbondale. Bleyer, a certified public accountant, is active in the Carbondale community. He serves on the board of directors for the Carbondale Community High School Foundation, City of Carbondale Downtown Development Committee and the finance committee of St. Francis Catholic Church. He served as a board member for Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, Carbondale Main Street, Southern Illinois Catholic Social Services and Carbondale Jr. Sports. Before attaining his MBA at SIU, Bleyer earned a bachelor’s in accounting and finance from the University of Notre Dame in 1981. Kathryn Bohn, a 1983 graduate of SIU’s medical school in Springfield and Carbondale, is a physician/owner of the Vein Specialists in Bloomington, Illinois. She also is an adjunct professor for Illinois State University as part of its health care pre-professional mentorship program. Bohn practiced emergency medicine at hospitals in Bloomington and Normal, Illinois, for more than 24 years, and she is board certified in emergency medicine, family medicine and phlebology (advanced vein disease). Bohn earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Illinois State University.

Stephen Goepfert, a 1975 accounting alumnus, served as vice president – internal audit (chief auditor) for United Airlines in Chicago until his retirement in October 2013. Before that, he served a 21-year stint as chief auditor of Continental Airlines, which merged with United in 2010. Goepfert has served internal auditors globally, including a tenure as chairman of the board for the Institute of Internal Auditors, 20062007. He graduated with highest honors from SIU and was inducted into the College of Business Hall of Fame in 2010.

Ray Griffith, a 1975 marketing graduate, is the former president and CEO of Ace Hardware Corp., an Oak Brook-based cooperative with 4,400 stores in all 50 states and 62 countries. During an 18-year career with Ace Hardware, Griffith served in multiple leadership roles and was responsible for various facets of the company’s daily operations. Before his distinguished career with Ace, he was president/CEO of Coast to Coast in Denver. He is president and CEO of Follett Corp. He also chairs the board of directors for Ace International Holdings.

Edward Hamilton, a 1988 finance graduate, is an independent investor who resides in Charlotte, North Carolina. He focuses on early stage private equity investing, residential real estate investment, and equities and options trading. He served as managing director/SVP at Banc of America Securities in Charlotte, where he was responsible for the firm’s syndicated corporate loan sales, trading and research desk, which had several billion dollars of assets under management. The 1988 SIU finance alumnus chairs the executive committee for the Inception Micro Angel Fund in Charlotte. He is a College of Business Hall of Fame member and a member of the executive committee for the college’s dean’s advisory board.

Larry Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and his medical degree from SIU in 1973 and 1976, respectively. Jones’ medical practice, which he established in 1979, has evolved into the Primary Care Group, the largest health care access organization in southeastern Illinois. Jones serves as president of the Harrisburg-based group, which has six equal partners and four employed physicians. Ten doctors practice at Primary Care Group, a federally qualified health clinic. The 1976 SIU School of Medicine graduate has been a clinical associate professor in the school’s Department of Family Medicine since 1981. Jones received the School of Medicine’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2002 and was named the school’s Mentor of the Year in 2012. He also earned the Alumni Achievement Award from the College of Science in 2010.

of cash, securities and real estate or personal property. Many corporations will match the contribution of employees, officers, directors and, in some instances, spouses and retirees. The SIU Foundation also accepts various types of planned gifts, whereby the donor makes a gift commitment during his or her lifetime that will benefit the university. Planned gifts are in the form of bequests, gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and life agreements.

ENDOWMENT INVESTMENTS

The SIU Foundation receives endowment contributions and invests them into the endowment investment pool for perpetuity. An annual distribution of a portion of the revenue generated from the endowment accounts is transferred to corresponding current accounts and used according to donors’ restrictions. MISSION STATEMENT The Southern Illinois University Foundation was established in 1942 to solicit, receive, hold and administer gifts from private sources for educational purposes. The SIU Foundation provides alumni and other friends as a means to invest in the future of their University. The Foundation is an independent, non-profit corporation, which exists solely to further the mission of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. It is a designated 501 (c)3 organization with appropriate approval from the Internal Revenue Service to issue tax deductible receipts for private gifts received to support Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The mission of the SIU Foundation is to maximize private support for SIU Carbondale to assist the University in achieving its longrange goals. As outlined in the Strategic Plan, the activities, programs, and efforts of the SIU Foundation for the next two years will be driven by five priority focus areas. These areas are developing next wave fundraising programs, foster and improving relationships with key constituency groups, recruiting and retaining strong, high-capability staff, creating comprehensive marketing and communication strategies, and implementing board governance and leadership structures. Throughout the coming years, the SIU Foundation will continue to raise money with the help of others, praise our quality board and staff, and tell our story.
