From the President This year we mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of Southern Illinois University. It is a time to celebrate the traditions, pride and promise of an amazing place that shaped my life and many others. The SIU Foundation has been an integral part of the university’s success since 1942. As part of our partnership with SIU, we helped launch the university’s yearlong anniversary celebration with our record-breaking Day of Giving with 2,800 gifts raising more than $910,000. This is just one example of the strong allegiance, passion and commitment that our alumni and friends have for SIU. We also surpassed the Forever SIU campaign goal of $75 million seven months early! More than 26,000 donors made more than 60,000 individual gifts since the three-year campaign launched in January 2017. Of the $75.3 million raised when we hit our goal, nearly $40 million supports student scholarships and $33 million has been committed to academic programs. But, we are far from finished. We will continue to reach out to donors during the remaining months of the campaign and beyond. We have great things in store for 2020 as we bring our goals into focus. Your continued support and donations will help SIU to continue its focus on excellence. SIU Foundation Elects New Board Members in Fiscal Year 2019 Four alumni of Southern Illinois University have joined the SIU Foundation’s Board of Directors. They are serving three-year terms that will conclude June 30, 2021. The board governs the SIU Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization that provides alumni and friends a means to invest in the university. Established in 1942, the foundation solicits and administers gifts from private sources in support of SIU Carbondale’s academic mission. Private funding is generated through annual giving, planned giving, major giving, corporate and foundation relations and campaigns.

Bill Beck presided over Beck Bus for 37 years until its 2007 sale. Joining the familyowned company in 1970, he expanded it from a two-bus operation to more than 300 school buses, 18 charter coaches and 12 transit buses serving SIU. Beck Bus initiated the first Saluki transit system. He is a past president of the Illinois School Transportation Association and is a director emeritus of the National School Transportation Association (from which he received a 2009 Distinguished Service Award). Beck was a director and the first president of the SSM Good Samaritan Foundation and was instrumental in bringing Good Samaritan Hospital to Mount Vernon. He currently serves as president of TET, Inc., a property management company, and is a board member of Royalty Capital Corporation, an insurance holding company. A native of Mount Vernon, Beck received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from SIU’s College of Business in 1970. He is a member of the College of Business’ Accountancy Board of Advisors since 2000 and received the college’s Distinguished Service Award in 2011. He was recognized as a Southern Illinois Business Leader of the Year by the College of Business and Administration in 1999. In 2011, Beck received SIU’s Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his devotion and service to the university. The Becks support multiple campus units and have established the Bill and Barbara Beck Accounting Scholarship Endowment. Beck is a former board president of the Mount Vernon Township High School Board of Education and has been a member of the Police and Fire Commission since 1998. A member of the Board of Directors of Good Samaritan Hospital, he was instrumental in bringing that hospital to Mount Vernon. On the state level, he is a past chairman of the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce and has served on the Illinois Economic Development Authority. Beck and his wife, Barbara, live in Mount Vernon and have three adult children and six grandchildren. They are life members of the SIU Alumni Association.

Scott Moller is an owner of AKA Media, a Chicago-based marketing communications agency. Moller is a former managing partner of Marketing Werks, which he co-founded with sister, Julie Guida (also a Saluki), in 1987. Marketing Werks grew into the nation’s largest independent consumer-engagement company, valued at $100 million, with a staff of more than 200 full-time employees and offices in Chicago, New York and Orange County. They sold the company in 2013. Moller earned a bachelor’s in journalism from SIU’s College of Mass Communication and Media Arts and a master’s in business administration from SIU’s College of Business. He has hosted receptions reconnecting alumni with the university, provided internships to SIU students and established the Scott Moller Scholarship Endowment. He brought the Big Muddy Film Festival to Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, sponsored SIU’s Technology and Innovation Expo at 1871, coordinated participation in Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and started SIU Day at Brookfield Zoo. Moller is a major contributor to Saluki Alumni Plaza and served on the communications advisory board for the Forever SIU campaign. He has been a life member of the SIU Alumni Association since 2003. He lives in River Forest with his wife, Julie, and two children.

Beth A. Mueller

Michael R. Williamson, MD

Beth Mueller is a two-degree SIU Carbondale alumna with a 1994 bachelor’s degree in accounting and a 1995 master of accountancy from the College of Business. Mueller has been a partner at Deloitte Tax LLP in Chicago since 2007 and currently leads the firm’s U.S. Tax Analytics practice. She formerly led Deloitte’s U.S. Inbound tax practice and is the former Midwest region leader of Deloitte’s women’s initiative. Prior to joining Deloitte in 2002, she was a tax manager at Arthur Andersen LLP. Mueller serves on the board of advisors for Ladder Up, an organization that provides financial programs to help working families move up the economic ladder. She has served as a mentor with American Corporate Partners, providing career advice and networking opportunities to U.S. veterans. She is a recipient of the 2010 Illinois Most Powerful and Influential Women award from the National Diversity Council. Mueller currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the SIU Pontikes Center for Advanced Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, as well as the SIU College of Business School of Accountancy. She is a life member in the SIU Alumni Association and the Alumni Online Community member. In addition, she has been a sponsor for the Alumni Association’s extern program since 2007. In her 2012 interview with The Chicago Egyptian, Mueller shared: “I started thinking back on everything SIU gave to me and decided to take it a step further. It inspired me to give back to my alma mater and support those who follow me into this profession.” Mueller resides with her husband, Daniel, and two children in Chicago.

Michael Williamson, M.D., earned his medical degree from SIU’s School of Medicine in 1976. He is professor and chair emeritus of radiology at the University of New Mexico, where he served as chief of ultrasound and chair of radiology during a teaching career that spanned 29 years. Before joining the University of New Mexico, Williamson served as an assistant professor of radiology at the University of Arkansas from 1984 to 1988 and was in general practice from 1978 until 1981. During his career, Dr. Williamson specialized in ultrasound and musculoskeletal radiology and was awarded numerous grants and contracts. He is a 2012 recipient of the American Board of Radiology’s Distinguished Service Award and was a fellow in the American College of Radiology. He has authored four books and approximately 70 peer reviewed publications. Williamson also received the Best Teacher Award in 1992. Williamson is a current member of the School of Medicine Alumni Society Board of Governors, joining in 2014. He is married to Susan Williamson, who recently retired after 31 years as the chief pediatric radiology professor at the University of New Mexico. The couple reside in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Forever SIU Campaign Exceeds $75 Million Goal

outhern Illinois University Carbondale’s student-focused Forever SIU campaign has surpassed its $75 million goal. More than 26,000 donors have made more than 60,000 individual gifts since the three-year campaign launched in January 2017. Of the $75.3 million raised by June 2018, nearly $40 million supports student scholarships and $33 million has been committed to academic programs. The balance goes toward facilities, technology, faculty initiatives and more. The campaign is scheduled to continue through December 2019. Chancellor John M. Dunn said the success of Forever SIU: The Campaign for Students speaks to the loyalty of SIU’s alumni and friends. “During our 150th year, we are celebrating the tradition, pride and promise of SIU,” he said. “The investment of our loyal donors in our students and our future reflects all three: the Saluki tradition of giving back, pride in our university and the promise of things to come.” Dunn said the university will continue to reach out to donors during the remaining months of the campaign and beyond.

“We view the goal as a floor, not a ceiling,” he said. “We will continue to welcome support that will help us attract and retain students and ensure that our academic programs remain strong.” Dan Korte, a member of the SIU Foundation Board who is co-chair of the Forever SIU campaign committee, said the board had several goals in mind when it worked with the university to launch the campaign. “We wanted to demonstrate our commitment to SIU and the region. We also wanted to make a statement about the university’s momentum by launching a campaign that would culminate during SIU’s 150th year,” said Korte, a 1985 graduate of SIU’s College of Engineering. “In addition, many donors and members of the board wouldn’t have been able to attend SIU without financial support from donors. We wanted to pay it forward.” Rae Goldsmith, chief executive officer of the SIU Foundation, described the campaign as a partnership between the university, the foundation, and alumni and friends who care about SIU.

Nicholas Oglesby, student

Scholarship Paves The Way To Helping Children In Need Nicholas Oglesby, a junior pre-medicine student specializing in physiology, plans to become a pediatrician. “I came to Southern Illinois University because I know SIU has been proven to get students prepared for the workforce and their career,” he said. Oglesby is a recipient of the Bertrand scholarship, established by Marsha ('70) and Gary Bertrand. “I was overjoyed because without the scholarship I more than likely would not have been able to attend this year. My parents have two children in college and they cannot afford to put both of us through school,” he said. The dream of becoming a pediatrician is personal for Oglesby. He hopes to work with families in low-income areas to help ensure children have access to the health care they need. He has big plans for his future once he graduates. “Once I obtain my degree in physiology, I want to go to medical school and become a pediatrician,” he said. “After I have enough experience, I am going to start my own affordable practice in East St. Louis, Illinois, where many people do not have the money or resources to get proper medical care.” Oglesby hopes some day he can give back and help others like he has been helped by the Bertrand scholarship. “I appreciate this scholarship more than I can express, and I am determined not to let your generosity go to waste,” he said.

The Power Of “Just A Thought”

n January 2019, Dan Giedeman, a three-degree SIU alumnus, posted this now-famous comment in the private Facebook group called “Carbondale in the 80’s and 90’s.” The group, started by Craig S. Wilson in November 2018, swelled to nearly 15,000 members within three months. Giedeman’s idea to raise money for a scholarship dovetailed perfectly into SIU’s Day of Giving on March 6. With the added excitement of the university’s 150th anniversary kickoff celebration, members of the group banded together and donated. The outpouring was phenomenal. Jim Raffensperger, a member of the Facebook group, named the scholarship as a joke that brought a smile to many alumni — The Balancing Education, Experience and Reality (BEER) Scholarship. “I mean, what college kid doesn’t drink beer?” Raffensperger joked. The name stuck, and the group rallied behind it in a viral

fashion. Nearly 1,100 people from the group donated more than $50,000 to create two endowed scholarships for students. A ceremony on the steps of Shryock Auditorium held Friday, March 29, commemorated the creation of the scholarship. Many members of the group traveled from other states. One person who hadn’t been back to campus in over 28 years traveled from South Carolina to be part of the ceremony. Giedeman, who traveled from Michigan, presented Chancellor John M. Dunn with a check for $50,000 from the group. Dunn presented the group of about 100 people with the Day of Giving trophy for most individual gifts for a non-academic unit. Dunn said he has always been impressed by the amount of pride at SIU, and it was evident in this group’s turnout. “In the history of humankind, the really great people — the Mother Theresas, the Albert Schweitzers — have always reminded us that true happiness can only be obtained through giving,” Dunn said. “You represent that in spades, and I’m very, very proud of you. Thank you.” Raffensperger said alumni came to the university for the education but left with memorable experiences, lifelong friends, and sometimes their soulmates. “We’re all back because we came to love SIU and southern Illinois,” Raffensperger said. Many who came to witness the celebration also took a tour of the campus, and some brought their high school children to take a look at all that SIU has to offer. That evening, a group

took the trophy to several Carbondale establishments for bragging rights. As well as raising funds for the university, Giedeman and Raffensperger said the Facebook group created a space for alumni to find opportunities to support current students with mentors and internships. The group also encourages former students to finish their degrees at the university. The trophy will be shared among the group throughout the upcoming year. The trophy traveled to SIU Days at Busch Stadium and Wrigley Field in June.

Emilyee McGiles awarded the Jane Talley Phelps Scholarship Emilyee McGiles, a sophomore on the women’s golf team from Orland Park, Illinois, received the Jane Talley Phelps Scholarship for the 2018-19 academic school year. McGiles is studying exercise science with the plan to attend physical therapy school after graduation. “My journey thus far has exceeded my expectations,” said McGiles. “I have met so many incredible people here that help me every day, from my professors and coaches to my teammates and many more.” McGiles has excelled on and off the course at SIU. During the 2017-18 season, she received two separate honors from the Missouri Valley Conference – Academic Honor Roll and Golfer of the Week (Sept. 20). “I am very happy that Emilyee was selected for the Jane Talley Phelps Scholarship,” said women’s golf coach Danielle Kaufman. “It is well deserved; she works very hard and has no problem leading the team.” McGiles’ Golfer of the Week performance was followed by her eighth place finish at the Ball State University Cardinal Classic. She finished with a career low of 220 (+4), which also ranked sixth in the Saluki record book for all-time low 54-hole score. McGiles’ freshman year was stellar with an average of 78.2 strokes per round. She also shot a career low of 71 at the MVC championships and finished in the top-10 at three different tournaments. “I can’t imagine myself being anywhere else,” said McGiles. “To be a recipient of the Jane Talley Phelps Scholarship is an honor, and I am very thankful. Jane was involved with the SIU Women's Golf Team as a supporter and volunteer and I wish I had the chance to meet her. Every time I play a round of golf, I will be thinking of her.” 9

Kayak Trip Raises Money For Vets Nejmanowski Reflects On His Journey, The Power Of The Great Outdoors

eventy-three days and a handful of alligators later, Greg Nejmanowski’s kayak trip down the Mississippi River was over. He dropped his kayak in the water in May at Itasca State Park in Minnesota, and it came out last August in the Gulf of Mexico. The trip, called Paddle for Patriots, raised $25,500 for the Veteran Adventures program at SIU’s Touch of Nature. “It’s been worth it,” said Nejmanowski, an SIU alumnus, Touch of Nature graduate assistant and Veteran Adventures coordinator. “This trip has inspired me to continue helping vets, to serve those who served us.” Other than a couple of close calls with recreational boats – including one instance when he thought he was going to have to abandon ship – Nejmanowski said the trip went well. Floodwaters complicated things a bit and forced one of his planned events to be moved from Grand Tower, Illinois, to Chester, Illinois, but he said the high water also led to less river traffic. “It went smoothly, but it was hard,” he said. “Had I not had an inspiration, a passion, it would’ve been much harder.” The expedition started slowly but picked up steam as he passed St. Louis. From that point on, it was mostly open water. Nejmanowski set up camp each night on sandy beaches, largely in areas inaccessible by land because of the flooding. “It was kind of nice living on the minimum, and the simplicity of it,” he said. “So much wisdom comes from simplicity.”

The vast majority of the time, Nejmanowski was by himself. He did, however, have run-ins with a few alligators and several people along the way, including one particularly special family. “It’s such a rush being in the water with an alligator, at their level,” he said. “They’re not really all that interested in you, but they will come check you out.” As he neared the final section of his trip, he met the Leedom family in Louisiana. It wasn’t a planned meeting. They saw Nejmanowski walking by the river and asked if he needed a ride. The father, wife and son took Nejmanowski back to his kayak and along the way, they struck up a conversation. “I told him what I was doing, and come to find out, the father was a Vietnam veteran,” Nejmanowski said. “He told me to take his number and call him if I needed anything. The next day I needed some water, so I called, and ended up having lunch at their home.” The Leedoms asked to be notified when he was about to finish his trip, and Nejmanowski obliged. They were waiting at his final stop to help him celebrate. “The kindness of humans, ya know?” Nejmanowski said. “We’re now friends for life.” After more than two months on the river, Nejmanowski entered the final stretch of his trip. He took the Atchafalaya River through southern Louisiana to the Gulf of Mexico. “It wasn’t something I could see for a long time,” he said. “I basically went around some trees, and then boom, there’s the

Gulf of Mexico. It was so beautiful. There was the prettiest sunset that night.” Nejmanowski is a firm believer in the healing power of nature. His kayak trip only strengthened that belief. “Being outdoors has great therapeutic benefits,” he said. “That’s what Veteran Adventures is all about, and I wanted to put it on the map.”

It offers outdoor activities to veterans, including hunting, hiking, backpacking trips, whitewater rafting and more. It is funded through grants and private donations, and it recently lost a large state grant. Through Paddle for Patriots, Nejmanowski raised funds for Veteran Adventures and brought awareness to the scourge of veteran suicide. According to a 2016 report by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, an average of 20 veterans die each day from suicide. That’s approximately double the suicide rate of non-veterans. “I feel empowered as an individual,” Nejmanowski said. “This trip inspired me to learn more about what nature and outdoor experiences can do to improve people’s quality of life.” For more information about Paddle for Patriots and Veteran Adventures, search for Paddle for Patriots on Facebook or visit veteranadventures.siu.edu.

Roland Burris

Burris Shares His Saluki Pride Roland Burris is a man of action and passion. The SIU Carbondale alumnus speaks about being a Saluki with the same amount of pride one would expect him to speak about his many accomplishments. “When you graduate from SIU, you are a graduate of one of the greatest universities in this country,” Burris said. “You are a Saluki!” Showing his support for the students at his alma mater, Burris established an endowed emergency fund for students in need. Started in 2008, it benefits full-time SIU students from the Chicagoland area or Southern Illinois (south of I-70) with preferences given to African American students. He returned to campus in April 2019 to meet the most recent recipients of grants made through his gift. During his time as an SIU student, one of Burris’ housemates was forced to drop out and leave the college because of financial woes. “I never forgot that,” he said. “I said if I ever got in a position to help a student, I would lend a helping hand.” Burris received a $35-per-quarter tuition scholarship in 1955 that allowed him to enroll at SIU. In 1959, he earned a scholarship to study as an exchange student at the University of Hamburg in Germany. He went on to law school at Howard University. At Howard, Burris received a scholarship as a graduate assistant. “I got my foundation at SIU in political science that allowed me to do very well,” he said. “If it hadn’t been for scholarships, I wouldn’t have been able to make it.” Even the shortest version of his résumé speaks for itself. Burris was the first black national bank examiner for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency for the U.S. and the first black man elected to statewide office in Illinois, replacing President Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate. He has served as an adjunct professor for SIU’s master of public administration program. In 1997, he was added to the University’s Wall of Fame as one of its 10 Most Distinguished Alumni. Burris offered sage words of advice to anyone in a position to make a difference in the life of an SIU student. “Make room for visions of other people and help if you’re able to,” he said. “We have to look out for those who are less fortunate. You cannot believe what a good feeling you get inside to know that you have helped somebody along the way.”

Building A Path To SIU And Its Region

eth Mueller had been looking for a way to honor her parents’ love of Southern Illinois University Carbondale and the surrounding region for several years, but nothing seemed to resonate – until she heard J.D. Tanner, director of SIU’s Touch of Nature, speak about the multi-purpose bike path project at a meeting last fall. Part of the project includes a kids’ pump track, where children of all ages and abilities can enjoy bike riding at Touch of Nature. “J.D.’s enthusiasm about that project is contagious. When I heard him describe the potential, what a bike path of this size could mean to the university and region, and how it could help foster a love of the outdoors for young people, I knew this was the perfect opportunity to honor my parents,” she said. Mueller, sister Amy Frerichs and brother Jason Rausenberger were raised in southern Illinois and are all proud graduates of SIU. They recently established a gift of $35,000 in honor of their parents, Alan and Pat Rausenberger, to fund a children’s pump track at the Touch of Nature multi-purpose bike path project. Mother Pat Rausenberger passed away in 2013, and father Alan Rausenberger still lives in the Carterville home where they raised their children. Jason Rausenberger thinks the project will be a great addition to southern Illinois. “This will be a really neat place for Southern Illinois, and will give families a great new outdoor activity,” he said." Growing up, we all spent a lot of time together outdoors. Doing things like this has always been a great way to hang out with my dad, whether it was him coaching our softball and baseball teams as kids, teaching us how to water ski on Crab Orchard Lake, golfing at Hickory Ridge or just hanging out on the houseboat with my parents’ dock friends.”

Mueller said the reason they chose to donate to the Touch of Nature’s bike path project, most specifically to build a kids’ pump track, is to honor their parents’ love for children. “My mother was a second-grade schoolteacher at Streator Elementary School and Carbondale Winkler and Parrish elementary schools for several years and she related to children so well. She especially loved her grandchildren. She was the kind of grandmother who was quick to get on the floor and read a book to her grandkids in funny voices or spend hours blowing bubbles and enjoying their giggles,” she said. Mueller fondly recalls coming into her 18-month-old daughter’s bedroom well past bedtime, where she would find her mom reading from a stack of books. Her mother would say, “Just one more book and we’ll quit.” The Rausenberger family grew up staunch supporters of SIU and attended many Saluki sporting events. “Our dad is a business owner in Carbondale, and all three of us kids attended SIU. It’s just part of who we are as a family, so it comes naturally to want to help the university and the region,” Mueller said. “My hope for SIU is that we find a path forward that celebrates this fantastic research university and also recognizes the unique surrounding physical environment SIU and southern Illinois offer.” Tanner is leading an initiative to expand Touch of Nature’s Park and Trail System to over 30 miles of a natural-surface trail. Currently, there is no designated mountain biking trail in southern Illinois, with the two closest being in St. Louis and Indiana. The trail system would attract outdoor recreation enthusiasts from across the country, increase Touch of Nature’s role in student recruitment and retention and establish the park as an economic driver for southern Illinois. Tanner believes such a bike trail could attract up to 55,000 people each year and bring $7 million in consumer spending to the region. “We’re so thankful to everyone who shares in our mission – like the Rausenberger family, ”Tanner said. “I hope people will see the value in the economic boost that this will bring to southern Illinois.” Frerichs is looking forward to the project’s completion and says it will hold a special place in her heart. “I’m so excited to see this come to life. Family meant everything to my mom, and it does to my dad too. My mom would spend hours on our deck in the summertime, watching my girls race their bikes on the trails in our little patch of woods, across the bridge over the creek, exploring our own little forest. I guess you could say that we had our own little kids’ pump track, so this will be really special to me,” she said.

Alumni Help Keep Automotive Technology on the Right Path The paths of Zac Winstead, Bryan Jenkins and Dan Corey converged at SIU’s automotive technology program in the late 1990s. All three grew up in small towns across Illinois and Indiana and each had an affinity for automobiles. When they arrived on campus, they immediately knew it felt right. Jenkins remembers coming down to Carbondale with his parents and feeling that instant connection. “Back then, the automotive technology program was located in the blue barracks near Carterville, Illinois. Even though it wasn’t much to look at, I knew I was home,” Jenkins said. “I remember thinking if I could get a job in the automotive technology field, I would enjoy going to work for the rest of my days. Turned out I was right. “ Their introductions to one another came through their vehicles. “At first, we didn’t know each other’s names, but we knew each other’s trucks,“ Corey said. “I drove a 1989 Chevy S-10, and Bryan drove a 1971 Chevy C-10 and Zac drove a 1977 F-150,” Corey said. They eventually became close friends, spending weekends together singing karaoke at a Carbondale establishment known as Key West. “In the 1980s, there was a country music group known as the Highwaymen with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson,” Winstead said. “Each of us had our own connection to the group. Although we could not sing like them, we had a great time trying.” After graduation, they began their careers. The work took them on different paths across the country to California and Louisiana and, eventually, Michigan. “If you are in the automotive industry, most roads eventually lead back to Detroit,” Jenkins said.

The friendship has lasted well over the course of 25 years. Their bond has only grown stronger now that they all live in the Detroit area. Winstead ‘01 is a director at Ally Financial. Jenkins ‘01 is a manager of Ford’s hotline department and Corey, ’01 and ’02, works as a service representative for Hino Trucks, a Toyota truck division. The three also maintain a bond with SIU. Corey often returns to SIU for visits when he delivers trucks to southern Illinois. Jenkins serves on the SIU automotive technology program’s advisory board and Winstead has stayed in touch with many of the program’s leaders, such as Michael Behrmann, chair of SIU’s automotive technology department. Behrmann says their bond is not uncommon in the automotive technology program, and many alumni stay closely connected beyond graduation. “The careers for Zac, Dan, and Bryan led each to different corporations and different parts of the world. Their ties with SIU automotive and each other continued over the years. Today, their careers have located them close together once again,” Behrmann said. While many donors wait until the end of their careers to give back, Winstead, Jenkins and Corey are giving back now. Each is donating $500 every quarter for the next five years. By 2024, they will have funded an endowed scholarship of $25,000. Preference will be given to a student who has demonstrated success in the SIU automotive program and who has worked in the automotive/transportation industry. A demonstrated knowledge of the Highwaymen will also be a relevant factor. “Our goal in setting up a scholarship is not to reward the best and the brightest students. We aren’t necessarily looking for a 4.0 student. We are all fortunate enough to enjoy what we do and want to help other students just like us,” Jenkins said. Winstead agrees. “Looking back, those were the best four years of my life, and I would go back and replay it all in a minute. SIU was a setting that helped me prepare for real life and real experiences,” he said. “I just want to give that experience to someone else.” For Corey, SIU changed the trajectory of his life. “It was a beacon that let our lights shine. SIU gave us all the opportunities to do what we love in an industry we didn’t know existed. In the towns where we grew up, there was no path to get there,” he said. Behrmann is appreciative of the gift and hopes other Salukis will follow in their footsteps. “The Highwaymen Automotive Scholarship will encourage our students to continue working hard and striving to become their best while also providing much needed financial assistance. A Lesson In French

B

efore the sun rose on Joe French’s first day in the world, he already had several strikes against him. Born in the Bronx during the 1950s, French grew up in the midst of racial tension and dramatic demographic shifts. Born to a bipolar mother, French himself suffered from dyslexia. French’s father determined his son would leave the east coast upon his high school graduation and enroll at Southern Illinois University during the late 1960s. “I actually never applied to any other university except SIU,” French said. “As a third-generation family member to attend SIU, no one even considered sending me anywhere but Carbondale.” French’s grandfather attended SIU when it was known as Normal University With his one-way ticket to the Midwest, French boarded a plane and arrived on campus. Carbondale turned out to be a great home for French, who knew he would be headed in the wrong direction if he didn’t go west to SIU. “It was the late ‘60s and early ’70s, and there was the flower power movement and all kinds of drugs. New York and the East Coast were embracing that movement, and when I came to Carbondale, that pace slowed,” he said. “SIU was this wonderful place to decide who I was going to be and how I wanted to be perceived. I wasn’t somebody’s son; I was just a student along with thousands of other students. I got a great education at SIU, and my degree in psychology helped me throughout my life understand people and what makes them tick.” French’s SIU education contributed to his success as an entreprenuer. He became a millionaire before the age of 30.

“Psychology came in handy on my very first job. I was the first black kid to be hired at a Jaguar dealership,” he said. “In less than six months, I was their number one salesman. I learned that people wanted knowledge about cars, and I also learned that knowledge was powerful.” From an early age, French honed his entrepreneurial skills and even put them to use at SIU while he worked on his degree. “I used to travel back and forth to New York and buy these fancy sports cars and drive them back to southern Illinois where people didn’t have access to such vehicles. Those cars sold like hotcakes,” he said. “Right before graduating, I spotted a tractor trailer bed selling waterbeds. I seized the opportunity and bought them all. In a few days, I resold them and made a quick $16,000.” For graduation, French received a camera as a gift. He went back to New York City, opened an art gallery and started hanging out with budding photographers such as Paul Caponigro and Ansel Adams. “We would trade photographs and sell them for about $100 to each other,” French said. “I remember I used to get so mad at Ansel because he was the only one who made us pay $250. I thought he was playing dirty until much later when I sold one of his photographs for $50,000.” When the art market took a huge dive, he decided to go into corporate art, which led him to his ultimate destination of commercial leasing and real estate brokerage. During his time selling art to corporations he worked with a number of artists including Eliot Porter, a photographer known

for his richly colored images of the natural world. His photographs of nature from the forests of New England to the deserts of Mexico became the iconography of the conservation movement. Today, his works are held in the collections in museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York. French published a limited edition portfolio of Porter’s photographs called “Trees.” French donated one of the 25 sets to the Morris Library’s Special Collection. “I want students to know who Eliot Porter was, especially if they have an interest in photography. I also wanted to give back to the university that set me on the path to success,” French said. Morris Library’s dean, John Pollitz, says that SIU photography classes have already visited the collection. “We plan on displaying it in the University Museum this fall where everyone can see these masterpieces,” Pollitz said. When French was asked about the advice he would give to today’s students, he said he would tell them that they don’t have to be a rap star to succeed. “What you need to do is figure out what you love and if it can support you in a lifestyle you can live with,” he said. “You have to be realistic in your dreams. You need to be willing to go hard and when doors are shut, see if there is another door that can be opened.” French has written a book about his life, “French Lessons,” which will be published in late 2019.

#SIUDAY It was a celebration 150 years in the making, and it didn’t disappoint. On March 6, SIU’s alumni and friends gathered to honor the university during the third annual Day of Giving. Together, more than $910,000 was raised on a day marked by fun and philanthropy. In the Morris Library rotunda, a crowd of Salukis and supporters enjoyed a surprise present. An oversized gift box was opened, unveiling a theater performance by Grey Dawg and students from the SIU theater department. Chancellor John M. Dunn gave remarks, and Carbondale Mayor Mike Henry presented SIU with a city proclamation for the SIU Day of Giving. The event was capped off with birthday cake. Around campus, revelers interacted with fundraisers and university officials at Day of Giving booths at the library and the Student Center. There was also a mosaic wall made up of selfies that created a collage image of a saluki. “The day was a great success,” said Matt McCoy, the SIU Foundation’s director of constituent relations. “There was a festive atmosphere. It was a wonderful day to be a Saluki.” Most of the giving was done online, but the spirit of the day was evident during the on-campus events. The Value Of Yes

Sunil and Rupali Sinha

D

r. Atmesh Sinha brought his family to Carbondale in the early ‘70s to start the department of mining engineering at SIU and retired 25 years later before moving to St. Louis, where he and his wife, Chinta, still reside. Sunil, the eldest of their three children, spent many summers in Carbondale while attending school and college overseas and was able to experience small-town life revolving around family, community and helping others. As he grew up and pursued his dream of getting a medical degree, he never forgot the community that raised him. Sinha and his wife, Rupali ’96, have recently established a fiveyear pledge at $10,000 a year to support the College of Business. Upon completing his internal medicine residency in Chicago, he returned to Carbondale and began his career with the Carbondale Clinic (now the SIH Center for Medical Arts) as an internal medicine physician, where he practiced for five years. “There was a particularly challenging weekend of being on call where I covered for multiple colleagues, which served as a tipping point for me,” he said. “I determined I had to do something else besides patient care, so I set out to get my MBA. Although at the time, it wasn’t clear how the MBA would help, I was confident that it would open a few more doors in my career.” Prior to the start of each semester he recalls sitting down with his staff and working out his patient schedule to allow him to

take the required courses for the MBA program at SIU’s College of Business. The challenge was to make Sinha’s course schedule work with his patient schedule for the two years needed to complete the degree. With the help of his staff and support of his family, he managed to balance both. Upon completion of his MBA, Sinha accepted a job as the director of primary care with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs hospital in Marion, Illinois. His work there opened the first of many doors in the field of administration, performance improvement and healthcare policy. He next served as the director of managed care at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs health system in Maryland, and had the additional responsibility of chief quality officer for his network of hospitals covering Maryland, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. Various opportunities allowed him to subsequently work for the United States Department of Health and Human Services at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Washington and as a Medical director for public health policy with Pfizer in New York and Washington. He returned to clinical medicine first as the vice president for medical affairs at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia, then as the chief medical officer for Chenmed for its operations in Virginia and back to his

midwest roots as the vice president and chief medical officer for the BJC medical group in St. Louis. Though he left southern Illinois in 2001, he maintained ties to the area through family as well as with SIU as a life member of the alumni association and as an external advisory board member for the College of Business administration. “Getting my MBA from SIU was the foundation for the many changes over my career which have allowed me to experience and positively influence multiple facets of healthcare,” he said. Sinha also remembers advice he received during his time at SIU that he says he has applied to every career move he has made. He recalls a guest speaker from Chicago came to speak to his class about career advice. Unlike most of his classmates, Sinha already had a successful career, so he was doubtful he would learn much from the presentation. However, the speaker shared about his first interview and how he hoped to get a job in finance but the job offered was in human resources. But, he knew he wanted to move to Chicago and this was a path to get there. So, he said yes to most of the questions and landed the job in Chicago. “The advice he gave was something I never forgot. He said if you feel strongly about accomplishing something, the answer is always yes and the rest you will figure out,” Sinha said. “In my career, every position has been new and something I had not done before, but I always knew I could figure it out. Banterra Agreement Establishes Scholarship Fund Southern Illinois University’s agreement with Banterra Bank, which changed SIU Arena to Banterra Center, also established a Banterra-SIU Scholarship fund. The scholarship is funded by profits from an SIU Athleticsbranded affinity debit card. Banterra Bank, the region’s largest, locally owned bank, announced the 10-year agreement in May. The multi-milliondollar agreement offers up to $10 million for SIU, with a $4 million guarantee for the first 10 years. The agreement can be extended for 10 additional years. The partnership is the largest corporate naming rights agreement in SIU’s 150-year history and the first naming right for the 55-year-old arena. “The partnership represents Banterra’s commitment to the success of the university, our athletics program and the region,” said John M. Dunn, SIU chancellor. “We’re deeply grateful for Banterra’s generous financial commitment, which includes scholarship support for student-athletes. The Banterra Center will continue to be at the heart of our men’s and women’s basketball programs, attracting fans, community members and many others who support Saluki athletics.” Former SIU Athletic Director Jerry Kill led the effort to get SIU’s first corporate naming-right partner in the university’s 150-year history. His said the partnership with Banterra serves as a strong example of future naming right opportunities for SIU’s athletic venues. “As we sought out a naming rights partner, it needed to be a company that aligned with our core values and had the brand power to take us to the next level,” said Kill. “I knew after our first meeting with Banterra’s leadership that this was a group that we wanted on our team. Both Saluki Athletics and Banterra are going to make the most of this partnership to benefit our studentathletes, customers and fans.” Working alongside Kill and the entire athletics administration is Saluki Sports Properties, which played an integral role in helping Banterra elevate its relationship. As the university’s athletics multimedia-rights holder and local Learfield IMG College team, Saluki Sports Properties oversees athletics’ corporate partner program and has worked closely with Banterra Bank over the past 10 years.

An Accomplished Alumnus With A Heart For Helping Others

Tom Murray

T

om Murray is a man of many accomplishments. From 1967 through 2007, he was employed at Sargent & Lundy, a global consultant to the electric utility industry. From 1993 through 2007, Murray was a senior vice president and an owner of the firm. Murray completed a full two-year engineering program at Purdue University Calumet Campus in 1964 and became an engineering graduate at Southern Illinois University in 1967. He devoted more than 40 years to Sargent & Lundy before retiring in December 2007 as an executive vice president, owner and director of the company’s Power Delivery Services Business Group. He traveled extensively domestically and to the Middle East and Pacific Rim. Murray is a registered professional engineer in many states and a member of several professional organizations. As Murray neared the end of his company career, he and his wife, Jan, decided it was time to give back to others. “We chose to focus on two areas – SIU and Special Olympics Illinois,” Murray said. Since 2004, Murray has participated with the Special Olympics of Illinois. He served as chairman for the organization in 2008. He is a member of the board and serves on the executive and development committees. At SIU, Murray serves on the Industrial Advisory Board of the College of Engineering. In 2012, he was awarded the SIU Alumni Achievement Award. In 2008, the Murrays decided to establish a scholarship for students pursuing an engineering degree.

“We do not determine who should receive scholarship funding. We only care that the funds get into the hands of those students who deserve the help,” he said. His desire to help others in need came from his early years at SIU. Times were hard financially. “When I arrived on campus, it was bursting at the seams. There was not a single room available, so I ended up sleeping on a cot out at a farmer’s house outside of Murphysboro for a while,” Murray said. “I eventually found a space at the Tau Kappa Epsilon house.” Murray said he thoroughly enjoyed his time at SIU, participating one year as a lifeguard at Campus Lake and working at The Club on the strip in Carbondale. When he graduated from SIU, the country was at war in Vietnam. “After graduation, I remember I submitted my application to Sargent & Lundy, but I didn’t hold much hope. Typically, you’d have to have many years of experience before you could be considered for a job at that company but, since many graduating candidates were in process to the Armed Forces and the company was under expansion, I got a chance to have an interview.” Murray recalled that his interview took a full day filled with back-to-back interviews. “The owner and the electrical department head of the company was the last to interview me. He looked at my résumé and said I have a question for you,” Murray said. “I see you took a transmission line design class at SIU. Are you familiar with the Maxwell-Boltzmann equations?” Murray remembered his German professor at SIU explaining those equations so he gave him the answers he was looking for. “He hired me on the spot and that started a 40-year career. I have reflected on that interaction many times. I am grateful for my education at SIU and how it prepared me for a great career at Sargent & Lundy," Murray said. The Murrays have given back, donating $230,000 over the last 10 years to SIU. The Murrays have significantly funded a unique annual scholarship mandating full distribution of the annual donation within five years. The couple has committed to donating $125,000 for the next five years. Dean John Warwick of the College of Engineering said Murray’s commitment and generosity to SIU are commendable. “These funds have and will support many accomplished and well-deserving students in our College of Engineering,” Warwick said. Murray’s advice to students is simple and direct. “Never give up,” he said. “If you develop a set of goals and a direction in mind, map out your path. As long as you stay committed, you will find success at many levels.”

The quickest way to give is to make a gift is to use check, credit card or electronic fund transfer. Checks can be made payable to the SIU Foundation and submitted with a gift pledge form. Gifts made by credit card require the same form. You can transfer funds to the foundation regularly by setting up an electronic fund transfer from a bank account. The foundation also provides a form for that process.

Annual Gifts

Each year, annual gifts contributed by alumni and friends of the university help provide scholarships to students as well as funding for research efforts, equipment and other needs. The annual giving campaign is an excellent opportunity for alumni to maintain close contact with their college or department. Your annual support plays an essential role in ensuring students and faculty have the best resources available to pursue their academic endeavors. Any kind of private support is crucial and will have a positive impact on SIU.

Endowments

Did you know some companies match their employees’ contributions? It’s true. Many corporations will match the contribution of their employees, officers, directors and, in some instances, spouses and retirees. Ask your personnel or community relations department if your company has a Matching Gift Program.

An endowment is a great way to ensure your gift has a noticeable, lasting effect on those it benefits. Contributions can be made in the form of cash, securities, life insurance or real estate. An endowment may also be established through a will or charitable trust. A donor has the option of endowing a scholarship, chair, professorship, visiting lecturer, faculty fellowship, graduate fellowship or facility. The minimum amount necessary to create an endowment is $25,000 (payable over a period of up to five years).

Matching Gifts

Stocks, mutual funds, bonds and other publicly traded securities may be transferred as gifts through the foundation. There are various ways of transferring these gifts, such as a transfer of securities from the donor’s brokerage account or delivery of the actual certificate to the foundation. Gifts of long-term appreciated securities may offer a substantial tax savings. These gifts may be deducted at the fair market value without the recognition of capital gains.

Real and Personal Property

Gifts of real or personal property, also known as gifts-inkind, can enhance the mission of the university. Gifts-in-kind may include your personal residence, farm equipment, artwork, rare books and other property that has a determinable value. The IRS has established rules for valuing these gifts, and the foundation reviews them prior to acceptance.

In Memoriam

Gifts can also be made in the honor or memory of a loved one. The foundation will send an acknowledgement of the gift to the family when the donor provides a name and address. We will not mention the dollar amount of the gift unless you ask that we do so.

An IRA charitable rollover is an effective way to help SIU further its mission. Plus, the financial benefits to the donor are significant. You can: • Avoid taxes on transfers of up to $100,000 from an IRA to the foundation. • Satisfy the required minimum distribution for the year. • Reduce taxable income, even without itemizing deductions. • Make a gift that is not subject to the 50 percent deduction limits on charitable gifts. Contact your IRA plan administrator. The funds can be directly transferred to the foundation.

Gifts from corporations and foundations play a significant role when it comes to serving students. ROSCOE PULLIAM SOCIETY $100,000-$249,999 Roscoe Pulliam was the first university alumnus to become president (1935– 1944) and the first president not to be selected from the faculty. During his tenure, extensive changes in both the curriculum and the facilities were made. The SIU Foundation also accepts various types of planned gifts, whereby the donor makes a gift commitment during his or her lifetime that will benefit the university. The foundation’s goal is to increase private support to enhance the university’s mission of being a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate research institution.

Financials ENDOWMENT INVESTMENTS The SIU Foundation receives endowment contributions and invests them into the endowment investment pool for perpetuity. An annual distribution of a portion of the revenue generated from the endowment accounts is transferred to corresponding current accounts and used according to donors’ restrictions. Mission Statement The Southern Illinois University Foundation was established in 1942 to solicit, receive, hold and administer gifts from private sources for educational purposes. The SIU Foundation provides alumni and other friends as a means to invest in the future of their University. The Foundation is an independent, non-profit corporation, which exists solely to further the mission of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. It is a designated 501(c)3 organization with appropriate approval from the Internal Revenue Service to issue tax deductible receipts for private gifts received to support Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The mission of the SIU Foundation is to maximize private support for SIU Carbondale to assist the University in achieving its long-range goals. As outlined in the Strategic Plan, the activities, programs, and efforts of the SIU Foundation for the next two years will be driven by five priority areas. These areas are developing next wave fundraising programs, fostering and improving relationships with key constituency groups, recruiting and retaining strong, high-capability staff, creating comprehensive marketing and communication strategies, and implementing board governance and leadership structures. Throughout the coming years, the SIU Foundation will continue to raise money with the help of others, praise our quality board and staff, and tell our story.
