Dear Saluki Supporters: We made great strides in enriching the lives of students and the greater Southern Illinois community during the past year, thanks to the generosity of donors like yourself.

The total giving of $22.2 million was 11 percent higher than FY17 and the third highest in the past two decades! As a result, the Forever SIU campaign is tracking ahead of schedule with $61 million of the initial $75 million goal reached at the halfway mark.

We are excited to share with you just a few of the stories behind these gifts and of the donors who are making an incredible difference in the lives of students in all areas of study – medicine, business, the sciences, the arts, and the list goes on. The generosity of Saluki nation is truly humbling and motivating.

We dedicate this annual report to SIU’s late chancellor, Carlo Montemagno, who inspired donors with his passion and enthusiasm for SIU’s future. We know that his work will live on in the continued evolution of SIU, and we will be forever grateful for his leadership.

SIU Foundation Elects New Board Members in Fiscal Year 2018 Five alumni of Southern Illinois University have joined the SIU Foundation’s Board of Directors. They are serving three-year terms that will conclude June 30, 2020.

The board governs the SIU Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization that provides alumni and friends a means to invest in the university. Established in 1942, the foundation solicits and administers gifts from private sources in support of SIU Carbondale’s academic mission. Private funding is generated through annual giving, planned giving, major giving, corporate and foundation relations and campaigns.

A native of Chicago, Barry Batson Jr. earned a bachelor’s degree in aviation management from SIUC in 1990. In 1989, while a student and flight instructor at SIU, he became the first African-American chosen for the United Airlines Internship Program, a selective program drawing from the top aeronautical students from select U.S. universities. Batson has spent his aviation career at United Airlines, starting as a first officer in 1991 and becoming captain on the 737-300/500 fleet in 1997. For more than 13 years, Batson has served as an Airbus 319/320 fleet captain. A member of the Captain’s Club at SIUC, Batson piloted the United Airlines’ Airbus, bringing Chicago-area students to SIU for Aviation Career Day in 2014 and was the first officer of the first Aviation Career Day flight sponsored by United Airlines in 1994. Batson and his wife, Dr. Stephanie CoxBatson, an OB/GYN, reside in Chicago. The couple are parents to twin teenage girls.

A native of New Orleans, Oyd Craddock holds a 1980 bachelor’s degree in management from SIU’s College of Business and an MBA from Tulane University. At SIU, he was a defensive back for the SIU football team from 1976 through 1979 and was inducted in the Saluki Hall of Fame in 2004. Craddock is a former IBM executive holding positions in sales, marketing, operations and management over a career of 31 years. He retired as Global Services Business Unit executive in December 2011 ending a career that began in his hometown of New Orleans before transferring to Atlanta, Georgia in 1995. Craddock is also the former president and CEO of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans.

He is an alumnus of the school and was named to the post in 2013. His four-year term was highlighted by stabilization, growth and strategic direction for the school’s finance, facilities and fundraising management. St. Augustine was founded to educate young men from black Catholic families in New Orleans. Today, the school welcomes students of any background but remains a leading secondary school of black males in Louisiana.

Craddock is writer, director and producer of an award-winning documentary film about St. Augustine’s integration of Louisiana high school sports following a 1967 federal court decision. The film’s title is “Before the West Coast: A Sports Civil Rights Story.” Craddock is a member of the SIU College of Business Minority Advisory Board. He and his wife, Annette, provided funding of St. Augustine’s Mr. and Mrs. Oyd Craddock Technology Classroom in 2005. The couple resides in Smyrna, Georgia.

A native of Mt. Vernon, Randy Ragan holds two degrees from SIU’s College of Business, a 1967 bachelor’s degree in accounting and a 1968 Master of Business Administration.

Ragan was a first-generation student and worked his way through college at the Mt. Vernon and Carbondale Sherwin-Williams paint stores. As a student, he was a member of Beta Alpha Psi and Beta Gamma Sigma. In 1990, he was inducted into the SIU College of Business Hall of Fame. Ragan spent his career in public accounting, retiring from Deloitte in 1996 and from RSM US in 2017, having been an assurance partner with both firms. He has served on the boards of the Springfield Municipal Opera and Springfield Old Capitol Art Fair, and was a 16-year member of the Rochester Community Unit School Board of Education, including 10 years as president. He was co-chair of Gov. James Thompson’s Cost Control Task Force on Education from 1989 to 2005, after being on the adjunct faculty of Lincoln Land Community College for 15 years. Ragan has been a member of the SIU Alumni Association Board, including time as both president and treasurer. He was also on the SIU College of Business Accountancy Board for a decade. He and his wife, Donna Brown Ragan, live in Springfield, Illinois, and are parents to seven children.

Originally from Boston, Steven A. Tedesco earned his Master of Science in geology from SIU’s College of Science in 1981. In addition to this degree, he holds a bachelor’s degree in geology from Northeastern University in Boston and a Ph.D. in geology with a minor in petroleum engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. A certified petroleum geologist with more than three decades in the natural resource industry, Tedesco is presently chief science officer for Energid Energy Inc. that converts natural gas to electricity. The company has microgrid operations in Kansas, California and South Carolina and is based in Virginia. He also is the owner of Running Foxes Petroleum Inc., which operates over 600 oil and gas wells in Kansas, Missouri and Utah. He also is the owner of Atoka Inc. founded in 1998, a surface geochemical and unconventional resource laboratory service company that operates out of the same Englewood, Colorado, headquarters as Running Foxes Petroleum, which was established in 1986. Tedesco is the former president and CEO of ProMap Corp., an oil-and-gas mapping company whose largest customer was Running Foxes Petroleum. In 2013, Tedesco successfully reverse merged ProMap with Advanced Cannabis Solutions, Inc. (now General Cannabis Corp.). General Cannabis is a comprehensive resource to the regulated cannabis industry, providing assistance with real estate, security, financing and distribution. He has also been instrumental in helping three other companies go public on the AIM and TSX stock exchanges. He has three adult children and resides in Centennial, Colorado.

A native of Tunnel Hill, Gregory Webb earned his Bachelor of Science in agricultural economics from SIU in 1979. As a student, Webb was active in the National FFA and Alpha Gamma Rho. He was named outstanding alumnus by the College of Agricultural Sciences in 2009 and delivered the college’s commencement address. Webb joined Archer Daniels Midland in 1986 and is the company’s vice president of state government relations. He has also served ADM as vice president of public affairs and North American trade representative for grain and oilseeds, as well as holding various merchandising and management roles in the company’s Oilseeds business. He serves as a board member and treasurer for the Illinois Manufacturers Association, the Public Affairs Council based in Washington, D.C., and was recently elected to the National Board of Directors of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He is an inaugural member of SIU’s College of Agricultural Sciences Leadership Board. His wife, Colleen, is also a graduate of SIU’s College of Education. Two of the Webbs’ sons also graduated from SIU – Michael, in 2014 from SIU’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Kyle, in 2017 with an electrical engineering degree.

The couple resides in Chicago.

he second annual SIU Day of Giving raised $479,061 from more than 1,800 donors. With the theme of “Give the Gift of Experience” as its call to action, the 24-hour fundraising campaign rallied SIU supporters across the country and the globe in support of SIU students and programs. Jim Salmo, vice chancellor for development and alumni relations and CEO of the SIU Foundation, said the funds will make an immediate impact on the areas designated by donors.

“This event once again exceeded our expectations,” Salmo said, noting that the first Day of Giving raised $341,121. “We are already looking forward to next year as the kick-off to SIU Carbondale’s 150th anniversary celebration.”

Salmo said students played a pivotal role in the event’s success. This year, 42 percent of the number of gifts came from students. Many students connected with the campaign through information booths at Morris Library, the Student Center and many colleges and units. Traveling trophies were presented to the college or unit with the highest number of participants and for the college or unit that raised the most dollars.

“There was a tremendous amount of participation this year over last year, and I think it came from a friendly competition among the colleges,” Salmo said. “I’m very pleased to announce that SIU’s College of Applied Sciences and Arts was awarded the trophy for receiving the highest number of gifts at 306.

SIU’s College of Education and Human Services raised the most dollars at $96,996.”

The event would not have been successful without several online ambassadors and on-campus volunteers, including students and alumni who shared fundraising progress and messages on various social platforms, Salmo said. A video highlighting the many exciting experiences students have on campus had nearly 50,000 views.

Of course, without the assistance of scholarships, it’s possible the Du Quoin native may never have made such an incredible memory.

“Receiving the College of Liberal Arts scholarships has definitely given me motivation to further pursue music and perform in as many ensembles as I can,” Gomes said.

Gomes, who is also a recipient of the University Excellence Scholarship, has performed with the SIU’s Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, Symphonic Band and Pep Band, along with the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra and the Marching Salukis.

He also composed the score for a student-produced eclipse documentary titled “2:38: A Glimpse Into the Eclipse.”

“These scholarships have definitely eased the cost of being a music major,” he said. “Instrument repair, upkeep costs and ensemble costs can add up.”

Gomes was unsure of his major when he first came to SIU, but during his visit as a prospective student he made a connection to the School of Music.

“The amount of interest that the professors invested in me that day absolutely amazed me,” he said. “It was an immediate personal connection that I failed to make at any other university that I visited.”

Gomes has also served as a Saluki ambassador. While giving campus tours to prospective students, he likes to focus on the natural beauty all around.

“We have one of the most beautiful campuses that I’ve ever been to,” he said. “As a tour guide, bringing my group through Thompson Woods is always my favorite. I love seeing their faces in awe as they realize that we actually have a gorgeous forest in the middle of our campus.”

His experience at SIU has given Gomes a greater appreciation for the importance of philanthropy in higher education.

“Not only do scholarships relieve financial burdens for students, they let students know there are people who genuinely care about them and their futures,” he said.

Celebrate SIU During the Annual Day of Giving On Wednesday, March 6, 2019, SIU will unite for a celebration of history and philanthropy.

Events will mark SIU’s 150th anniversary and promote the third annual Day of Giving.

The university’s continued success is directly connected to the generosity of its alumni, friends, faculty, staff, students and surrounding communities. That giving spirit is on full display during each SIU Day. For 24 hours, donors are encouraged to make an online gift to the college or unit of their choice. The amount raised and number of gifts is tracked in real-time at siuday.siu.edu, including a constantly updating donor wall.

The first two years of the SIU Day of Giving raised hundreds of thousands of dollars through hundreds of individual donations. The funds have allowed the university to increase scholarships and enhance the student experience.

SIU supporters can help by signing up to be online ambassadors and sharing their excitement on social media.

Bringing Worthy Causes to the Forefront

W

hether it supports the charitable work of fellow Salukis, funds student trips to national competitions, helps existing programs or raises money for a project, every donation helps.

That’s where crowdfunding plays its role. SalukiFunder is designed to connect alumni and friends of the university to specific projects and causes. The projects are generally on the smaller side, and the goals are clearly stated by those involved.

Gifts of all sizes are accepted. There’s a live donor wall that updates with each gift, and everyone can see the progress as each project nears its goal.

“It’s a wonderful tool,” said Matt McCoy, director of constituent relations. “SalukiFunder allows us to tell the donors about interesting things happening at SIU and how their support can make an impact. Donors can then choose to help fund the projects they like best.”

The projects that can be supported are only live for a finite period, usually a matter of weeks. The only ongoing project on the website benefits the Saluki Food Pantry, which provides food assistance to students in times of need.

Fundraising campaigns are chosen based on each project’s merit and suitability to a crowdfunding platform. An application is available on the website.

“Our projects have a high success rate. Most of them meet their goals within the allotted time,” McCoy said. “We’re always looking for the next worthy cause.”

Dual Donations Medicine and generosity in the Wilson family

Dr. Margaret Wilson, a retired pediatrician, knows firsthand of the financial struggles of medical students.

“I remember what it was like to struggle with money while trying to complete medical school,” she said. “Scholarships for medical school are sorely lacking, even now.”

While cost of tuition at SIU School of Medicine remains one of the most affordable among public universities, medical students graduate with some of the highest debt – more than $210,000 on average – according to Erik Constance, MD, associate dean of medical student affairs.

“Scholarships are imperative for fulfilling our mission of sending well-trained providers in our central and southern Illinois communities,” Dr. Constance said.

To help future generations of female physicians, Margaret established a scholarship for female medical students at SIU. Her hope is that this scholarship will help make life a little less worrisome for the student and her family.

“These students have families, and they’re graduating from medical school with these huge debts,” she said.

While his wife’s generosity was bestowed on the medical students, Dr. Charles Wilson, a retired professor in SIU’s Division of Urology, wanted his gift to impact the work of his chosen specialty.

The SIU School of Medicine’s Founders Urology Care Scholars Program will support new investigators’ research and educational projects that benefit patients with urologic diseases. The funding will be used for basic, translational or clinical research in urologic diseases. The endowment is open to any donors who wish to support urologic research.

As Drs. Margaret and Charles Wilson enjoy their retirement, their son, Morgan Wilson, MD, ’05, is enjoying his career at SIU Medicine’s Division of Dermatology. Not only has Morgan generously supported the scholarship his mother began, but he also supports the Student Resource Fund and the SIU Dermatology Alumni Fund.

“I have enjoyed seeing the educational yield of the SIU Dermatology Alumni Fund, which helps to offset the costs of books, meetings, courses and equipment for our dermatology residency program,” Morgan said. “It is fun to witness the consequent learning.”

Though the Jacksonville-based couple and their son chose different medical specialties and different areas to give, all agree that they’d like to help support the mission of the medical school and keep quality physicians in Illinois.

“I’ve always appreciated and benefited from the SIU School of Medicine’s commitment to educational quality, and I’d like to support the continuation of this emphasis,” Morgan said. “As a native of the area, I also believe in the mission of educating physicians who will consider coming back to downstate Illinois.”

The Right

B

ob Gower’s personal narrative over the past seven decades offers a touching portrait of the American dream. SIU played a part in his story of accomplishment, generosity and determination. Born in West Frankfort to parents with an eighth-grade education, Gower knew that hard work was going to be his personal key to achieving success.

“I worked and paid my own way through college, which wasn’t easy to do when majoring in chemistry,” Gower said.

“Balancing classes and working on weekends was difficult, but through hard work I grew up fast. I learned that success doesn’t come automatically and that I just had to persevere through the hard times.”

Gower said that his experiences at SIU taught him so much about other people. He said those experiences taught him about character, taught him about honesty, and gave him an Bob and Mary Beth Gower appreciation of diversity.

“In West Frankfort, Illinois, there were no AfricanAmericans in the 1950s. When I arrived at SIU, I met all types of people from other cultures and countries, and it was a new and stimulating experience. I learned about people, what drove them and how to work with others who did not come from my background,” he said.

While he was a senior getting his undergraduate degree, Gower was encouraged by friends to go on a blind date with freshman Mary Beth Miller.

“I remember sitting across from this beautiful young girl, sharing a soda with her when she told me she was taking a freshman chemistry course and could really use some help with it. I thought, God must be smiling on me right now. I knew I was good at chemistry and that I could help her,” he said.

Fifty-eight years later, Gower credited his wife for helping him far more than when he helped her with her chemistry class.

Gower went on to receive his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SIU in 1958 and 1960, respectively, and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1963.

Upon graduation from SIU, Gower began an industrial career starting at Sinclair Oil Corporation as a research scientist.

“I quickly realized that I was just as able as some of the people running the companies that I worked for, so I asked to be moved into sales and experienced a range of business development and planning positions to broaden my background,” he said.

Gower soon rose to prominent positions in Atlantic Richfield and its divisions of the company. He became vice president of ARCO Chemical Co. in 1977 and senior vice president in 1979. In June 1984, he became senior vice president of Atlantic Richfield Co. Gower became president of Lyondell Petrochemical Co. when it was formed in April 1985 and was elected chief executive officer in October 1988. That same year, Gower led Lyondell through the largest initial public stock offering up to that time.

While Gower has had an illustrious career, he and his wife have always maintained a steadfast loyalty to SIU Carbondale’s chemistry department. Recently, Gower gave $800,000 to the department.

Gower said that opioid drugs are the only way to handle certain types of severe pain, so simply banning them from use is not the answer.

“The problem is that people quickly become addicted to opioid drugs,” he said. “We need to prevent abuse. What we have done with our drug is to modify it so that the drug is not active when taken. Only when it is in the digestive system and it meets an enzyme known as trypsin does it become activated via a two-step reaction. If a person snorts it or dissolves it and

injects the drug, it will not be activated. If chewed, the reaction still will not take place until it gets to the digestive system.

Gower is also passionate about providing opportunities for underprivileged children. For the past 30 years, he has worked with Communities in School, and he headed its operation in Houston for much of that time. CIS is a campus-based, nonprofit organization providing direct services and resources to under-served children with unmet needs, many with mental health issues. By surrounding them with a community of support, CIS empowers students to stay in school and achieve in life.

“Anyone can do what I have done, or something better, or something comparable. Each of us brings our own unique set of contributions to society. Everyone is important on this stage,” he said.

Artist’s Gift

to benefit Graduate STudents

A

rtist Jimmy Wright, who earned a Master of Fine Arts from SIU in 1971, is providing a $1 million gift to fully fund fellowships for graduate students in art at SIU. The Jimmy Wright Fine Arts Fellowship endowment will assist graduate students who need financial support as they pursue their graduate studies in art. “During my time in Carbondale, my home caught fire, destroying all of my equipment, clothing, household goods and artwork,” Wright said. “I was devastated. It was only through the generosity of students and faculty members from the art department who donated their artwork in an auction that I was able to get back on my feet.”

Wright left SIU for New York City in 1974. Today, he is an accomplished oil and pastel artist and is represented by the DC Moore Gallery in New York City and Corbett vs. Dempsey in Chicago. His works hang in many public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. Wright is also a member of the 1910 Society at Ox-Bow, the School of the Art Institute’s summer home in Saugatuck, Michigan, where he has served as a faculty member.

“Mr. Wright’s commitment to our university is clear,” said SIU Chancellor Carlo Montemagno. “This gift will benefit graduate students for generations, and Mr. Wright’s legacy will extend far beyond this university.”

Estate Gift Will Help Others Rise Dan and Toccoa McClary worked to ensure that their daughter, Susan McClary, had every opportunity to succeed. She didn’t let them down.

Susan, a renowned musicologist and 1968 SIU graduate, is furthering her parents’ mission by making a $400,000 estate gift through the SIU Foundation. The Dan and Toccoa McClary Scholarship will benefit female Native American or African American students who enter programs focused on science, technology, engineering or math (commonly known as STEM).

Her parents were SIU professors who taught microbiology and math. Her father, who was Cherokee, grew up in Oklahoma during the Great Depression. He served in World War II; through the GI Bill, he was able to attend college and earn his doctorate.

“My parents were deeply committed to education, because the education they received allowed them to get out of the Dust Bowl,” Susan said. “They made an enormous jump in life by the virtue of education.”

That drive was instilled in their daughter, and Susan took their ambition to another level. After earning a bachelor’s degree in music from SIU, she received her master’s and doctoral degrees in musicology from Harvard University.

“My parents insisted on excellence in education. It was clear I had to make the best grades and always be focused on moving forward,” Susan said. “My father wept when he learned I was going to Harvard.”

She went on to hold a number of positions in higher education, spending time at the University of Minnesota, McGill University, the University of Oslo and UCLA. Currently, she is a professor in the Department of Music at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

“I work with a program that brings kids from the inner city to campus,” Susan said. “My parents would want kids who are disadvantaged to have the same opportunities I did.”

Her many accomplishments include being awarded a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Fellowship from 1995 to 2000. In the spring of 2017, she received an honorary Doctor of Music Arts degree from SIU, the place her parents loved so dearly.

“It’s a beautiful area. My parents loved going to Giant City and Little Grassy,” she said. “The landscape is just gorgeous.”

Dan and Toccoa McClary stayed in Carbondale until their deaths in 1984 and 2005, respectively.

“It was quite obvious that I wanted to reinvest in higher education,” Susan said. “SIU is a really good place for kids who are the first generation to get their degrees. It’s where the money will have the greatest impact.”

Cements Legacy with Million-Dollar Gift

F. Lynn McPheeters attributes his success, in part, to his experience at SIU. He hopes his $1 million gift will assist future Salukis seeking similar results.

Growing up on a farm near Canton, Illinois, McPheeters was a first-generation college student. After graduating in 1964 with an accounting degree, he went on to become chief financial officer and vice president of Caterpillar, Inc. “Without SIU, I would never have been in a position to have the opportunity to do something like this,” he said.

The gift establishes the McPheeters Family Scholarship, which will benefit undergraduate College of Business students. Through the endowment, the university will award about $40,000 in scholarship assistance each year.

The funds are earmarked for firstgeneration students in the College of Business, who are from Illinois counties located south of Interstate 80. Preference will be given to those majoring in finance or accounting.

F. Lynn McPheeters Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA to retain their eligibility, and the scholarship is renewable for up to four years.

“Being able to attend SIU – a national, state-supported college – enabled me to have the career and life I’ve had,” McPheeters said. “My hope is that this scholarship will allow others who are in similar situations the opportunity to attend SIU and succeed in their chosen field as I was able to.”

A lifetime of success, service During his 40-year career, McPheeters fostered a working partnership between SIU and Caterpillar. Since retiring, he has 14

remained active as a proponent for public education and charitable causes.

An emeritus member of the SIU Foundation board, he previously served as chair of the audit committee and board president.

In 1988, he became one of the first members of the SIU College of Business external advisory board and was inducted into the college’s hall of “Without SIU, I fame. In 2006, McPheeters and his wife, Susan, made a $585,000 gift of appreciated Caterpillar stock, which was invested to create the Susan F. and F. Lynn McPheeters College of Business Leadership Endowed Chair, the college’s first endowed chair.

Their philanthropy has extended to numerous other charitable organizations and efforts, earning them the title of Outstanding Philanthropists for Central Illinois in 2006.

Parks Donates for Student Scholarships Sometimes a simple act can have a far-reaching impact.

Tilden “Tim” Parks ‘76 remembers well the day his father took him to his first SIU basketball game.

“I remember my dad bringing me to SIU Arena back when I was in eighth grade,” he said. “From then on, I was hooked – on basketball, football and on SIU.” Now, this SIU fan is donating an additional $1.3 million to Southern Illinois University Carbondale to provide scholarships for future Salukis.

Parks’ estate gift will be divided into three parts – $515,000 for journalism, $515,000 for SIU Athletics, and $270,000 for Morris Library. All of the funds will be designated for undergraduate student scholarships.

“This gift is an example of how one person can make a difference to our students,” said Chancellor Carlo Montemagno. “It opens new opportunities that will allow more students to benefit from an SIU education.”

For the love of the game Parks’ affinity for SIU Athletics is evident in his attendance record for football and basketball games.

Parks officially started keeping track of his Saluki sports attendance in 1978, and he’s proud to share that his unblemished attendance streak stands at 218 home football games and 540 men’s home basketball games.

Journalism alumnus Parks earned a degree in journalism and worked in Morris Library as a student.

“At a time when the journalism profession is under stress, it is reassuring when an alumnus such as Tim Parks makes such a substantial gift to educate the next generation of journalists,” said Kavita Karan, professor and interim director of the School of Journalism.

“I just wanted to give back to the profession from which we have received so much,” Parks said. “My experience as a student in the School of Journalism was a turning point in my life. Much of my joy has come thanks to what I learned and the people while there.”

Morris Library work experience Morris Library holds a special place in Parks’ heart, as well.

As an undergraduate, Parks loved getting lost in the stacks at Morris Library, discovering unexpected treasures and helping patrons find the exact book or magazine for which they were searching.

“All of my life I have just wanted to help people,” he said. “It’s something I learned from my dad.”

Library Dean John Pollitz said that Parks worked on the third floor of the library as a student employee in the 1970s. Parks worked for Pollitz’s wife, Aracely Pollitz, who was the Morris Library student supervisor at the time.

“Like many student workers, his experiences at Morris made a big impact on his life,” Pollitz said. “He recognizes that the student worker experience is so important – important in shaping positive experiences for the student and for the day-to-day operation of a successful library.

This gift will continue that great tradition of helping students succeed.”

This gift is allowing me to do just that. I want to help students who are passionate in their education and help them achieve their dreams,” Parks said.

t all started with a phone call in August 2016.

“The Becker Boathouse “I can remember it is a transformative gift clearly,” said Jim Salmo, that symbolizes the vice chancellor for development and alumni resurgence of SIU.” relations. “The phone rang —SIU Chancellor and it was Ralph Becker, a Carlo Montemagno 1955 SIU alumnus, pioneer of SIU’s radio-television program, and loyal donor. He called to challenge me with a $1 million donation that would make a difference on campus.”

Salmo presented Becker with several projects, and Becker chose the Campus Boathouse. As the renovations began, the SIU plant and service operations crew set up a camera so Becker, who lives in North Carolina, could watch the renovation progress.

Fast forward 18 months to April 28, 2018, when the SIU Foundation dedicated the newly renovated Ralph E. Becker Boathouse Pavilion. Hundreds came to attend the ceremony, and many lingered to offer Becker a heartfelt thanks and to share their memories of what the boathouse meant to them.

Sally Wright waited in line to share a memory. When she reached Becker, she said, “I just want to thank you for restoring the boathouse. My husband Mike and I were married here. This year will mark our 31st wedding anniversary. This place has some unforgettable memories for us, and I just want to thank you for your generosity.”

Troy Vaughn, former recreational sports and services director, believes the renovated boathouse will reenergize both students and the community.

“This brings an incredible amount of energy to the campus,” he said. “So many units came together to make it a reality. It was just an incredible team effort.

“Students are going to have a blast here,” Vaughn added. “The diversity of events is going to be amazing. Biology professors can hold classes here, student organizations can meet at the boathouse, and community members can rent it for a variety of events. We even hope to host weddings here again.”

In remarks made at the ceremony, SIU Chancellor Carlo Montemagno said “the Becker Boathouse is a transformative gift that symbolizes the resurgence of SIU and its prominence as the bright maroon jewel in the crown of Illinois higher education.”

Becker summed up the celebration. “This is absolutely terrific.

I never expected the university to go to this extreme,” he said.

“Everything I ever accomplished started right here at SIU Carbondale. Seeing this, and all of the people who came out, I believe this is the best day of my life.”

The dedication was held in conjunction with the return of the 45th Annual Great Cardboard Boat Regatta, which began at the boathouse after the dedication. As commodore for this year’s regatta, Becker sounded the horn for the first race.

Salmo said there is a long list of possible projects on the lake that could be funded by alumni donations, including the installation of fishing docks, additional bathrooms and a “water forest” project that would benefit the environment.

“The campus lake restoration and the boathouse renovation are the two most popular projects we have promoted this past year … they just bring back good memories for people,” Salmo said.

Donations to SIU Carbondale increase by 11 percent

onors contributed more than $22.2 million last year to support SIU students and programs, an 11 percent increase over the previous year, according SIU Chancellor Carlo Montemagno.

“Our alumni and friends believe in SIU, and they are coming together to advance the university,” Montemagno said.

“Their investment in our students and our future is incredibly important. On behalf of the entire campus community, I thank all donors for their support and confidence as we move forward to fulfill our vision for the university.

“These gifts support scholarships for SIU students, equipment for laboratories, library resources, positions for outstanding faculty and much, much more,” Montemagno said. “Many students wouldn’t be able to attend SIU – or benefit from all we offer – without the generosity of our alumni and friends.

Donors make the difference.”

All of the gifts and pledges were made between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018.

More than $15 million of the total came in the form of cash and other gifts that can have immediate impact, said Jim Salmo, the foundation’s chief executive officer. The balance includes

pledges for the future. For example, many donors make a commitment to include SIU in their estate plans, he said.

“All gifts – large and small – are important and valued,” Salmo said. “Donors have a lot of options in the ways they can structure a gift to serve a cause that is important to them – whether it’s paying it forward with a scholarship or investing in student and faculty research or academic facilities.”

SIU is in the midst of a three-year, $75 million fundraising initiative called “Forever SIU: The Campaign for Students.” To date, the campaign has raised more than $61 million.

Through Forever SIU, people across our extended community now have an opportunity to come together to accomplish something none could achieve alone. We are securing new philanthropic investment that will have a lasting impact on our university and the students it serves. Cash

The quickest way to make a gift is to use a check, credit card or electronic funds transfer.

Checks can be made payable to the SIU Foundation and submitted with a gift pledge form. Gifts made by credit card require the same form.

You can transfer funds to the foundation regularly by setting up an electronic fund transfer from a bank account.

The foundation also provides a form for that process.

Annual Gifts

Each year, annual gifts contributed by alumni and friends of the university help provide scholarships to students as well as funding for research efforts, equipment and other needs.

The annual giving campaign is an excellent opportunity for alumni to maintain close contact with their college or department.

Your annual support plays an essential role in ensuring students and faculty have the best resources available to pursue their academic endeavors. Any kind of private support is crucial and will have a positive impact on SIU.

Endowments

Did you know some companies match their employees’ contributions? It’s true.

Many corporations will match the donations of their employees, officers, directors and, in some instances, spouses and retirees.

Ask your company’s personnel or community relations department if your company has a matching gift program.

An endowment is a great way to ensure your gift has a noticeable, lasting effect on those it benefits.

Contributions can be made in the form of cash, securities, life insurance or real estate. An endowment may also be established through a will or charitable trust.

A donor has the option of endowing a chair, professorship, visiting lecturer, faculty fellowship, graduate fellowship, scholarship or facility. The minimum amount necessary to create an endowment is $25,000 (payable over a period of up to five years).

Matching Gifts

Stocks, mutual funds, bonds and other publicly traded securities may be transferred as gifts through the foundation.

There are various ways of transferring these gifts, such as a transfer of securities from the donor’s brokerage account or delivery of the actual certificate to the foundation.

Gifts of long-term appreciated securities may offer a substantial tax saving. These gifts may be deducted at the fair market value without the recognition of capital gains.

Real and Personal Property

Gifts of real or personal property, also known as gifts-in-kind, can enhance the mission of the university.

Gifts-in-kind may include your personal residence, farm equipment, artwork, rare books and other property that has a determinable value. The IRS has established rules for valuing these gifts, and the foundation reviews them prior to acceptance.

In Memoriam

Gifts can also be made in the honor or memory of a loved one.

By sending a name and address, the foundation will send an acknowledgement of the gift to the family. We will not mention the dollar amount of the gift unless you ask that we do so.

An IRA charitable rollover is an effective way to help SIU further its mission.

Plus, the financial benefits to the donor are significant.

You can: • Avoid taxes on transfers of up to $100,000 from an IRA to the foundation.

• Satisfy the required minimum distribution for the year.

• Reduce taxable income, even without itemizing deductions.

• Make a gift that is not subject to the 50 percent deduction limits on charitable gifts.

Contact your IRA plan administrator, and the funds can be directly transferred to the foundation.

Corporate Gifts

Gifts from corporations and foundations play a significant role when it comes to serving students. Whether you are part of a large, global company or a local business, a partnership with SIU is mutually beneficial.

Becoming involved with the university can assist in the recruitment of SIU’s top students, internships, research opportunities and exposure during campus events.

ENDOWMENT INVESTMENTS The SIU Foundation receives endowment contributions and invests them into the endowment investment pool for perpetuity. An annual distribution of a portion of the revenue generated from the endowment accounts is transferred to corresponding current accounts and used according to donors’ restrictions. The Southern Illinois University Foundation was established in 1942 to solicit, receive, hold and administer gifts from private sources for educational purposes. The SIU Foundation provides alumni and other friends as a means to invest in the future of their University. The Foundation is an independent, non-profit corporation, which exists solely to further the mission of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. It is a designated 501(c)3 organization with appropriate approval from the Internal Revenue Service to issue tax deductible receipts for private gifts received to support Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The mission of the SIU Foundation is to maximize private support for SIU Carbondale to assist the University in achieving its long-range goals. As outlined in the Strategic Plan, the activities, programs, and efforts of the SIU Foundation for the next two years will be driven by five priority areas. These areas are developing next wave fundraising programs, fostering and improving relationships with key constituency groups, recruiting and retaining strong, high-capability staff, creating comprehensive marketing and communication strategies, and implementing board governance and leadership structures. Throughout the coming years, the SIU Foundation will continue to raise money with the help of others, praise our quality board and staff, and tell our story.
