This 2017 fiscal year report shares successes from the 12 months beginning July 1, 2016, showcasing a few of the many donors from past the year and the positive impact that donations have had on our students and programs. You will learn about the foundation’s progress, and how our donors and alumni are bridging the gap for our students. In fiscal year 2017, the foundation transferred $7,860,291 to SIU, and $13,194,368 in net contributions was recorded, which is an 81 percent increase over fiscal year 2016. As we prepare to enter into 2018, we have plans to increase the impact of our scholarships, advance research that makes a difference in our lives, and engage society in meaningful and powerful ways that go far beyond the physical borders of our region. To do that, we need your help. We have great events in store for 2018, including the continuation of our three-year Forever SIU capital campaign to raise $75 million for student scholarships and programs, as well as the second SIU Day of Giving. SIU Foundation Elects New Board Members In Fiscal Year 2017 Five alumni of Southern Illinois University have joined the SIU Foundation’s Board of Directors. They are serving three-year terms that will conclude June 30, 2019. The board governs the SIU Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization that provides alumni and friends a means to invest in the university. Established in 1942, the foundation solicits and administers gifts from private sources in support of SIU Carbondale’s academic mission. Private funding is generated through annual giving, planned giving, major giving, corporate and foundation relations and campaigns.

First-generation college graduate Howard Lo earned two degrees in mechanical engineering from SIU Carbondale: a bachelor’s in 1984 and a master’s in 1986. He is the founder, CEO and chief engineer of VisitView Corp., a cloud-based computer application for managing executive briefing center workflows. Lo’s career also includes stints at General Dynamics Fort Worth, where he developed advanced aircraft analysis methods, and Silicon Graphics Inc., where he was a technology evangelist for 3D computer graphics and supercomputing technologies, and also developed early web-based online learning technologies. He is a life member of the SIU Carbondale Alumni Association and was awarded SIU’s Alumni Achievement Award in 2006. Lo serves on the SIU College of Engineering’s industrial advisory board and civil engineering professional advisory board and on the Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne College of Engineering, Technology and Computer Science’s industrial advisory board. Lo’s interests include studying disruptive technologies to increase learning and post-secondary education graduation rates and also researching augmented reality in advanced manufacturing. He loves the outdoors and promotes environmental causes.

Chicago resident Bill McGraw credits his 1969 degree from SIU Carbondale’s College of Mass Communication and Media Arts with opening doors to a four-decade career in marketing, advertising and sales management in the challenging Windy City market. For several decades, McGraw was involved in the meat business as a sales representative for Stock Yards Packing Company in Chicago. McGraw was a member of the Morris Library Campaign committee and considers the library the “crown jewel” of SIU. He and his wife, Gail, regularly participate in Morris Library’s Adopt-a-Book program. McGraw, a life member of the SIU Alumni Association, established the Joseph and Catherine Mignone McGraw Endowed Fund in 2007 in honor of his parents. The endowment supports the Irish literature and theater collections at the library. McGraw also is a member of the Friends of Morris Library board and served on the Morris Library Campaign committee. As a student, McGraw was a staffer for the Daily Egyptian and a sailing club member.

Pilot and entrepreneur Michael “Mike” Peters, an SIU Carbondale College of Applied Sciences and Arts aviation management graduate, received his AAS in 1998 and his B.S. in 1999. After graduating, he worked as a first officer for a decade at Continental Express. Peters is the owner of several successful web-based businesses, including Aviation Interviews LLC, a website he founded in 2001 to share interview experiences with pilots worldwide. Peters has established the endowed AviationInterviews.com scholarship for SIU Carbondale aviation students and has been active with the Hope Flys Scholarship committee, which benefits a scholarship fund honoring a fellow Saluki classmate and pilot who was diagnosed with cancer. In 2011, SIU recognized Peters’ achievements by awarding him the Alumni Achievement Award and inviting him to give the commencement address for the College of Applied Sciences and Arts. Peters is a member of the SIU Carbondale Aviation Management and Flight Advisory Committee, the College of Applied Sciences and Arts alumni board and the SIU Carbondale Captains Club fundraising group.

Connie Price-Smith, who earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation from SIU Carbondale’s College of Education and Human Services in 1985, recently served as Team USA women’s track and field head coach for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The native of St. Charles, Missouri, was inducted into the Saluki Hall of Fame in 1990 for her accomplishments as an athlete in women’s basketball, as well as her accolades at SIU in track and field. Price-Smith was a two-time All-Gateway Conference selection at SIU, with 1,271 points and 744 rebounds during her basketball career from 19801984. In her senior year, Price-Smith joined the track and field team and won the MVC indoor and outdoor titles in shot put and discus in 1985. She earned a 2001 Distinguished Alumni Award from the university and served as head coach of the women’s track and field team from 2004 to 2015. Price-Smith led the women’s track and field team to four Missouri Valley Conference titles and mentored 206 MVC individual champions,19 MVC most valuable athletes, 51 first-team All-Americans and 8 individual NCAA champions. Price-Smith and her husband, John Smith, live in Oxford, Mississippi.

New Jersey native Rick Wysocki earned two degrees in health education from SIU Carbondale: a bachelor’s in 1983 and a master’s in 1985. Wyosocki has been president of Language Services LLC, a full-service translation firm, for more than 20 years. A member of the SIU Alumni Association Board since 2012, Wysocki is the board’s president-elect and serves on several association board committees. Wysocki joined the SIU Foundation Board as a representative of the Alumni Association in 2017. As a student, Wysocki was a letterman on the SIU baseball team from 1980 to 1983 and later served as a graduate assistant at the SIU Student Recreation Center. Additionally, he was a member of Eta Sigma Gamma national health honorary society. He regularly attends many SIU events throughout the year and is actively involved with the SIU Chicagoland Golf Outing. Wysocki also served on the baseball alumni committee to renovate Abe Martin Field. He and his wife, Karen (B.S. 1983, Education), a reading specialist at Palos East Elementary School and former Saluki Shaker, reside in Orland Park and are life members of the SIU Alumni Association. The couple have two daughters; younger daughter, Sydney, is completing her senior year at SIU Carbondale with a speech communication major.

Day Of Giving:

Building On Success

W

orking toward a better future for SIU students is an exciting goal, and no day in recent memory was more exciting than the inaugural SIU Day of Giving. After raising $341,121 from 1,334 donors in 24 hours on March 1-2, the SIU Foundation is turning its focus toward maintaining that level of excitement for 2018’s event. Most of the giving was done online at siuday.siu.edu. Donations were tracked in real time, and the page was updated to show each donation and the overall totals. The 2018 SIU Day of Giving will take place March 7 and will feature competition between colleges and departments. Last year, the School of Law received gifts from the most donors (133), while the College of Liberal Arts received the most in total donations ($33,211). The Campus Lake Beautification Project garnered an impressive $106,105. Next year, colleges and departments will compete with giveaways and games to entice students, faculty, alumni and

community members to support their respective areas. Donors and others will be encouraged to voice their support for SIU, their college or a favorite cause via social media using the hashtag “#SIUDay.” School spirit is expected to run high. While the success of the Day of Giving relies on the generosity of established donors, the event also is designed to attract and engage first-time donors. Being able to donate online makes it more accessible to everyone. Each donation, whether it’s small or large, is shown on the Donor Wall, and many of this year’s donations were made in the name of loved ones and others. The importance of the Day of Giving is not lost on students. “Thank you for investing in us so that we can achieve our goals,” senior Avona Greene said in a thank-you video.

Scholarship Leads To Important Mission

S

tella Uzoewulu, a sophomore pre-medicine student specializing in physiology, plans to become a pediatrician. “I came to Southern Illinois University because it had an amazing science and research program. I knew that SIU would be able to prepare me for medical school, and for life after college,” she said. Uzoewulu is a two-time recipient of the Pi Kappa Sigma Memorial Alumnae Scholarship. “I felt incredibly honored to receive this scholarship, because any money that can help me further my education is greatly appreciated by me and my family,” she said. Receiving monetary assistance has made life a little easier for both Uzoewulu and her mother, who is a single parent. “I was always taught from an early age that money was important, but always scarce,” Uzoewulu said. “With this scholarship, my mother now has one less thing to worry about and can relax a little. “This scholarship shows me that, through hard work and dedication, you can achieve your goals. It has also enabled me to remain at SIU, and has further encouraged me to never give up on my goals.” The dream of becoming a pediatrician is personal for Uzoewulu. She hopes to work with families in low-income areas to help ensure children have access to the health care they need. “I would love to thank everyone who has made this scholarship possible,” she said. “It is an honor to be given this scholarship. My family and I are very grateful.”

Connecting Through Crowdfunding S

IU’s University Farms greenhouse had a problem last summer: too many plants and not enough space. Over the years, a separate teaching greenhouse had fallen into so much disrepair that the department had to consolidate activities in the University Farms greenhouse. The cramped conditions put a crimp in teaching and research efforts, and no funds were available to fix the problem. Karen Jones, chair of SIU’s Department of Plant, Soil, and Agricultural Systems, determined that if the department could grow plants by vertically laying them above the ground, it could ease space issues. To do this, she realized the plants would require lightemitting diodes, commonly referred to as LED lights. The next problem Jones faced was how to pay for the lights. Determined to find a solution, she turned to SIU’s network of alumni and students for help. Jones and her team launched a fundraising project on SIU’s new SalukiFunder, a crowdfunding web platform for campus organizations that is administered by the SIU Foundation, and set a goal of raising $3,000. They met their goal – and then some. Alumni and other supporters gave $3,105, which helped to buy several new LED lights. “We were really surprised,” said Matt McCoy, director of constituent relations for the SIU Foundation, who spearheaded this first-ever effort of raising funds through crowdfunding. “I don’t think any of us appreciated how effective fundraising through a crowdfunding platform would be. We definitely were pleasantly surprised to meet and achieve our goal so quickly.”

Since SalukiFunder launched in May 2016, 14 groups have raised more than $42,000. The money has supported a variety of causes, such as the Touch of Nature mountain bike trails, the Strong Survivors program for cancer survivors and caregivers, the National Association of Black Journalists Convention and the SAE International Saluki Baja team. A growing number of universities have launched crowdfunding platforms similar to SIU’s, which works like this: once an organization’s application to participate has been chosen, the group meets with a mentor from the foundation’s Development and Alumni Relations office to develop project descriptions, social media posts and emails. Campaigns usually run between 30 and 45 days. Each group posts a description of its project on the SalukiFunder site, along with a video clip or photo. The group then promotes the project through social media and emails to supporters. With just a few clicks, supporters can make their donations directly to the causes they most care about. McCoy said that a big benefit of crowdfunding is that it gives students, faculty, alumni and the community a way to connect. “It’s an opportunity for donors to connect with a cause or project they believe in,” he said. “Instead of donating to a general fund, donors can choose a specific project and see exactly where their donations are going.” Dave Baer, a 1975 SIU graduate, donated through SalukiFunder to the College of Agricultural Science’s LED lighting project. Director of Constituent Relations said he makes a point of promoting SalukiFunder when he’s talking with other alumni. “I’m a big Saluki fan,” he said. “It’s a great way to support students directly, and that is really what so many alumni are trying to do: help the next generation succeed.”

Lighting the Way Crowdfunding Makes LED Project Possible

W

ith the first successful SIU crowdfunding venture for the College of Agricultural Sciences LED lights, the 32 donors who generously gave between $10 and $450 (with a total amount of just over $3,000) can now hear “the rest of the story” – and discover how their donations improved students’ learning environments. On March 31, the College of Agricultural Sciences held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of its LED light greenspace. Sharon Youck, who graduated with a plant and soil sciences degree in May, explained why these LED lights are so important to students’ research projects at SIU. “One of the required courses in greenhouse management requires students to memorize between 150 and 200 types of perennial plants,” she said. “With existing greenhouses in disrepair, students had to travel to the University Farms greenhouse, located on the edge of campus, to visit the perennial plants located there. With limited time and limited access to vehicles, this made it difficult for students to study for their required classes. Now they can stop in room 169 in the College of Agriculture Services building and learn about the variety of perennials on display. It makes such a huge difference.” When asked what she found most surprising in her studies, she said she did not realize how many variables – and how many people – it takes to get an apple on the shelf at the grocery store. “I have a greater appreciation for the farmers and the food producers who work to get food products to the public,” she said.

I invite everyone to join me.” Such were the words of Ralph Becker, one of SIU’s most accomplished graduates, when donating $1 million to renovate and expand the boathouse and pavilion on Campus Lake. The project includes a classroom, new and additional site lighting, and creating a patio space for outdoor performances, lectures, dinners and community events. The Ralph E. Becker Pavilion will include an 850-square-foot classroom named in honor of Becker’s mentor and friend, the late Frank Stanton, who was president of CBS from 1946 to 1971 and was the network’s vice chairman from 1971 until his retirement in 1973. The boathouse and boat dock buildings were built in 1958-59, and many of the existing materials – including structure and plumbing systems – are more than 50 years old. The renovation and addition will bring the facilities up to date with building codes and standards. Becker, a 1955 graduate in speech communications, is considered by many to be among the pioneers of the university’s radio-television program. In his broadcasting career, which spanned more than six decades, Becker relied on hard work and his business acumen to own numerous television stations and be a media investor. The Carbondale native maintains a strong affinity for SIU’s College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, the university as a whole, and the community. “I would not have been successful had I not attended SIU, and it is a place where I call home,” said Becker, whose broadcasting career started as an intern with KMOX radio in St. Louis in 1949

while he was still in high school. “It served as the foundation for what I was able to accomplish in life.” He continued with numerous broadcasting jobs while at SIU from 1951 to 1955, including writing a radio-television column for the Daily Egyptian. After graduating, Becker served as a lecturer for a year before going into the Air Force to fulfill his ROTC commitment. Becker returned to SIU in 1959 to continue his graduate studies and manage what was then called WSRV-FM (now WSIU-FM radio). After college, he expanded his expertise to produce and direct radio and television programs in markets including Peoria, Illinois and Washington, D.C., working on numerous advertising and marketing campaigns and serving as president and CEO for a group of television stations. He later was involved with media investing, in which his group found poor-performing TV stations and implemented changes to improve their operations. Becker and his wife, Jane, live in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and they have been generous supporters of SIU. Becker’s philosophy is that once a goal has been set, one should work hard and set additional goals. “I want to challenge everyone to give back to others, and to what is important to them,” Becker said. “It is extremely important to challenge others to do bigger and better than what I am able to accomplish. That is the only way progress will be made.” He added: “Throughout my life, I challenged my employees and I challenged my children to do better. I liken it to pole vaulting. You might have cleared the bar last year, but I’m setting the bar a little higher this year. My challenge in giving this gift is for others to do bigger and better things for Southern Illinois University.”

1955 Southern Illinois University alumnus

Becker received the SIU Alumni Association’s Alumni Achievement Award for the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, and he was the radio and television department’s “alumnus of the year” in 1985. He endowed one of the college’s significant scholarships, the Ralph E. Becker Scholarship, which is given annually to a radio-television student whose primary focus is in management and marketing research. Becker was the then-College of Communications and Fine Arts commencement speaker in 1987. Becker received a medallion and clock from the college in 1995. In 1997, he and his wife donated the obelisk sculpture that is located in the college’s courtyard. “If we aren’t generous, a lot of good things would never occur – and a lot of creativity would not happen,” he said. “There are things that can still be invented and risks that can still be taken. I just want to make sure SIU goes onward and upward.”

Boat Dock And Pavilion Expected To Be Ready By Spring Have you seen the progress at the boat dock and pavilion? You aren’t the only one. Ralph E. Becker, the man responsible for the $1 million donation that’s funding the work, is also monitoring the construction via a private camera feed to his North Carolina home. Mr. Becker, one of the pioneers of the university’s radio-television program, is an SIU Carbondale graduate class of 1955 and an Alumni Achievement Award recipient. Those watching have witnessed the first phase of the renovation of the more than 50-year-old structure. The boat dock has been reinforced and repainted. New lighting and decking have been added. Stonework now surrounds the water front and patio façade. “Since the inception of the project, SIU has experienced a great collaboration with the architectural firm of Eggemeyer Associates (Herrin), Samron Construction (Murphysboro) and all of the talented SIU physical plant workers,” Scott Weber, university engineer, said. In April, the first phase was finished, and the second phase of the project was put out for bid and was won by Marion-based Evrard-Strang Construction. The company will be redoing the plumbing, adding HVAC and insulation, installing a new roof and adding glass windows which will act as exterior walls. The work is expected to be done by the end of February 2018. SIU Recreational Sports and Services will be responsible for the upkeep and administration of the facility. There will be canoe and paddleboat rentals available. Event space will be available for a variety of purposes, including classroom and social activities, banquets and even weddings. Once completed, the facility is expected to be one of the crown jewels of campus. For many, including Mr. Becker, that would be a welcome sight.

Leaving A Powerful Legacy

SIU zoology students will benefit from the philanthropy of William Hill.

A

$1.5 million estate gift from William Hill, a 1942 SIU graduate, will establish two scholarships each year to junior or senior zoology majors with grade point averages of at least 3.0 in all zoology courses. “Scholarships are essential to attract the most talented students to SIU, especially in this highly competitive science field,” said Lori Achenbach, recently retired dean of the College of Science. “These students, whom we expect to serve as leaders in the College of Science, are vitally important to the program’s future success.” Hill died Feb. 19 in Decatur, Illinois, at the age of 98. After graduating from SIU, he spent his career with the United States Food and Drug Administration, holding several prominent positions with the agency, ranging from inspector to director. In retirement, Hill became even more appreciative of his SIU years. When he returned to campus in 2002 to mark the 60th anniversary of his graduation, he presented the university with a $100,000 gift to establish the William C. Hill Zoology Scholarship Endowment. In a 2015 interview, Hill reflected on his initial gift, saying: “We had extra money and thought supporting SIU would be the best way to invest it. The education I received at SIU truly prepared me for success in the FDA. It provided me with knowledge that allowed me to be a great fit for what the organization required. “This is my way of paying SIU back.” Jim Salmo, chief executive officer of the SIU Foundation, said the gift marks a positive development at a time when scholarships are needed to help minimize students’ debt burdens. “William Hill knew what an education could mean for people, and he was committed to helping them go to school,” Salmo said. “His gift to the zoology department is going to be meaningful, and we hope it will inspire others to follow in his footsteps.”

Music To His Ears Luke Shaffer walks to the beat of his own drum. Literally. The freshman music education major is a member of the Marching Salukis – and a proud scholarship recipient, too. “Money was an issue for me going to school,” he said. “Even though I still need to watch my finances carefully, the scholarship gives me the boost I need to be able to have a zero balance every semester.” Shaffer, a Michigan native, wanted to attend a university with Division I sports programs and a marching band. “When I visited SIU as a guest of the Marching Salukis for a football game, I instantly saw myself as a Saluki,” he said. “I loved campus.” He said SIU’s iconic music buildings, such as Altgeld Hall and Shryock Auditorium, caught his eye. “Music has been the thing I’ve devoted my life to,” Shaffer said. “I’ve been studying since I was 8.” The assistance he’s received will help Shaffer follow his dreams. “Without my college degree, I would not be able to pursue my goal of being a music educator,” he said. “The scholarship letter was the doorway from ‘before college’ to get to ‘after college.’”

Gift Honors Lives Of Discovery, Education

H

aree Deutchman dedicated her life to the excitement of discovery. Her mother, Muriel, is helping others who share her daughter’s passion by establishing the Muriel and Bernard Deutchman Endowed Scholarship Fund in memory of Dr. Haree Lynn Deutchman. The fund provides scholarships to support graduate students in philosophy. Haree earned her master’s and doctoral degrees in anthropology from SIU in 1976 and 1979, respectively. Tragically, she passed away in 1984 at the age of 34. While her time as a professional was short, it was productive. Haree was a prolific researcher involved in a number of published works. She was particularly well versed in Native American antiquities, the subject of both her master’s and doctoral theses. Haree spent time working on the Black Mesa Archaeological Project, a well-known initiative within the archaeology community. About 1.3 million Navajo, Hopi and ancient Anasazi artifacts were unearthed and delicately moved to another location. A New York City native, Haree came to SIU after earning her bachelor’s degree at New York University. While studying in Carbondale, she received the SIU Dissertation Research Award and an SIU Fellowship. Haree was also a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma XI, the Scientific Research Society on campus.

Muriel Deutchman said Haree had many wonderful memories from her time at SIU. She hopes the fund will help other graduate students with their studies. Recipients of the scholarship will be known as Dr. Haree Lynn Deutchman Scholars. Haree’s father, Bernard, is also memorialized by the endowed scholarship. He was an educator in New York, and Muriel said it was important to honor Bernard’s legacy. Education played an important role in the Deutchman family, and that was a key factor in Muriel deciding to make such a gift to her daughter’s alma mater. She hopes that by keeping Bernard and Haree’s memory alive, others will be able to better afford their research and follow in their footsteps. Endowments are a wonderful way to honor those who inspire and make a difference. Donors have the option of endowing a chair, professorship, visiting lecturer, faculty fellowship, graduate fellowship, scholarship or facility. Doing so ensures the gift leaves a lasting legacy while ensuring SIU students have access to a topnotch educational experience. ilbert Kroening first came to know Calvin Ibendahl when they both attended SIU as students. Later, their paths crossed again when Kroening returned to SIU as the dean of the College of Agriculture at the same time Ibendahl re-enrolled in SIU. Ibendahl, a World War II and Korean War veteran, had been unable to continue farming while originally attending SIU, so he left the university during his senior year in 1956. He soon was able to buy a bigger farm and found success. It was only when Kroening returned to SIU that he and William Doerr, then the assistant dean of the college, found a way for Ibendahl to finish his degree in agriculture. Kroening, B.S. ’59 and M.S. ’60, explains: “Calvin only needed one or two more courses of general study courses, but his farming activities in the spring and fall always got in his way. So we found a way to allow him to start a course in the spring and then finish it in the fall.” At that point, Ibendahl and his wife, Jean, were successful, so it wasn’t about getting the degree to make a living. It was more about finishing what he had started – and that’s just what he did, earning his bachelor’s degree in ag business in 1983. While Calvin Ibendahl was considered an introvert, his wife was just the opposite. Ibendahl was considered a progressive farmer for his time, and his spouse was equally driven. As a strong proponent of women in agriculture, she served as vice chairman of American Agri-Women and was president of Illinois Women for Agriculture and chairman of the National Livestock and Meat Board. She also was a member of a U.S. Department of

Agriculture task force to help improve high school agriculture economics programs. “Those opposite personality traits are probably what helped them to be such a successful and influential couple,” Kroening said. The Ibendahls also initiated the Daughters of American Agriculture Scholarship in 1991. This scholarship is available to any woman between the ages of 18 and 23 who is engaged in farming, ranching or agribusiness. It supports the pursuit of accredited courses in agriculture leadership, communications, rural sociology, medicine or any other courses directly benefiting agriculture. Calvin Ibendahl died in 2006; his wife continued the couple’s legacy until her death in early 2017. The Ibendhals maintained a strong affinity for SIU, and in the early 1970s they gave a substantial real estate gift to the university. In their last years they arranged to give an estate gift of $300,000, ensuring that their legacy could be carried out far beyond their lifetimes. Rhiannon Storm, development officer for the College of Agriculture, said she came to know Jean Ibendahl personally over the last few years. “Jean wanted to make a mark and leave a legacy,” Storm said. “Since they never had children of their own, she liked to think the SIU students were her children. She just had a helping heart. She’d be pleased to know students are the ones that will end up benefiting from the Ibendahl legacy.”

Ibendahl Gift Allows Students To Experience A Day In The Life Of A Veterinarian When Rebecca Atkinson, associate professor of animal science, discovered she had been awarded the Ibendahl Faculty Excellence award, she knew exactly what she wanted to do with the funds. “We have a large alumni group of seasoned veterinarians in the area who are always ready to pitch in and help the college when needed,” Atkinson said. “When I approached them with the idea of hosting a two-day pre-veterinarian camp for high school students on campus, everyone immediately said they would help.” The funds Atkinson received from the Ibendahl award went directly to purchase supplies for the inaugural Saluki Enrichment Pre-Veterinary Program camp, which aims to show high school students what a day is like in the life of a veterinarian. “Without the supplies, the students just wouldn’t have had the same experience,” Atkinson said. “The students’ involvement would have been much more limited.” Some of the funds were spent to buy scrubs for the 14 high school juniors and seniors who attended the camp July 17-18, 2017, at SIU’s Department of Agriculture. The students learned about ultrasound pregnancy checks, large-animal exams, small-animal exams and pet first aid, and more. “The camp is also a great way to recruit students to SIU,” Atkinson said. “Of the 14 students, several were thinking of attending college somewhere else – that is, until they attended our camp.” A lifelong passion for animals led Mackenzie Burgin, a 17-yearold from Paris, Illinois, to the camp. “Since I was young, I’ve had a huge interest in being a vet,” Burgin said. “I’ve been raised around livestock my whole life, so I thought, ‘Why not give it a shot? It’s SIU.’” Atkinson plans to expand the camp next year into a three-day event and invite high school sophomores as well as juniors and seniors. The goal is to have 50 students enroll for next year.

Foundation Celebrates 75 Years D

uring the SIU Foundation’s 75th Anniversary Celebration, one thing was clear: Saluki spirit is running strong. On May 6, alumni, donors and members of the campus community gathered for an evening of food, music and storytelling in honor of the foundation’s impact on SIU and, concurrently, SIU’s effect on people. The event’s emcee, Mike Reis, is an SIU alumnus and has been doing radio play-by-play for Saluki football, basketball and baseball for 39 years. “I’m an example of a life made better by this place,” Reis said. SIU President Randy Dunn said the passion alumni have for the Carbondale campus is strong. “It’s a love for the institution that I think binds individuals,” he said. That passion was evident in the words of those who attended the celebration. “It’s even better now than it was when (I was) here,” said Karen Wysocki, an alumna and teacher. “I think that’s what makes me the most proud.” “No matter where you go, you run into graduates,” added Gilbert Kroening, who received the Outstanding Faculty and Staff Foundation Award. “I think I’m most proud of the product this institution produces, and that’s its graduates.” Dr. Laurie Achenbach, then dean of the College of Science, expressed her confidence in the university’s future. “I think (SIU) is going to continue to train students for great jobs,” she said. “I think that we’re going to find more and more opportunities.” The Forever SIU fundraising campaign was announced during the celebration. The goal is to raise $75 million over three years. “We are ready to work for the students, and we believe it’s going to be an exciting three-year campaign,” said Camelle Logan, campaign co-chair.

Honoring Dedication To SIU As part of its 75th anniversary celebration, the SIU Foundation honored its inaugural class of award recipients. “These awards are our way of recognizing those people who have impacted the foundation in a very special way,” said Susan Rashid, president of the SIU Foundation’s board of directors. The winners of the awards are: • Pam and Phil Pfeffer, Southern Flame Award. • Paul Conti, Outstanding Foundation Service Award. • Dr. Gilbert Kroening, Outstanding Faculty and Staff Award. • Sarah Hollis, Outstanding Student Philanthropy Award. The Southern Flame Award is the highest honor the SIU Foundation bestows. The Pfeffers, both SIU alumni, met in a physics class and have been engaged with the university ever since. They have supported scholarships, varying colleges and departments, the Marching Salukis, SIU athletics, Pulliam Tower and more. In 1998 they created the Pfeffer Foundation Endowment Fund, which benefits the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Science. “We just treasure this university and everything that it has done for us and our family,” Phil Pfeffer said. “We’re greatly honored.” Conti has more than 40 years of service to SIU under his belt. He’s worked on alumni scholarship programs and helped organize and establish the annual Chicagoland golf outing, SIU’s Wrigley Field Day and Chicago White Sox events. He also served as president of the board of directors for the SIU Alumni Association and the SIU Foundation. “My family and I are deeply honored and appreciative of this award,” Conti said. Kroening, a 2017 Distinguished Alumni honoree, is a retired dean emeritus of the College of Agricultural Sciences. Along with his wife, Jean, he established the Gil and Jean Kroening Fellowship Lecture Series. The series brings a distinguished speaker to campus every year to address agricultural, food and environmental issues. “Dr. Kroening was also instrumental in the creation of a student exchange program with agricultural programs in Lithuania and Russia,” Rashid said. “This initiative had a significant impact to international programs and international culture on campus.” Hollis spent 3½ years as a student caller for the foundation and secured more than 750 donations valued at about $65,000. “Along with being a top caller, Sarah also takes a lot of pride in helping her peers – especially new student callers – become just as successful as she is,” Rashid said.

Making Extraordinary Progress O

ne of SIU’s most ambitious fundraising efforts is well under way. This three-year, $75 million fundraising campaign will provide scholarships and other support for the students of SIU. Forever SIU: The Campaign for Students was launched Jan. 1 by the SIU Foundation, which raises private funds to support the university. It will end in December 2019, the year of the university’s 150th anniversary. As of June 30, 2017, the foundation already has raised $35 million toward the goal, according to campaign co-chair Dan Korte, a 1985 SIU alumnus. “These funds will have an immediate impact changing the lives of our students,” Korte said during a May 6 event marking the public launch of the campaign. “We see the goal as being very achievable, given the generosity of SIU’s current and future donors.” This campaign will propel the Forever SIU initiatives, which include: • Increased scholarships – Endow an undergraduate scholarship, graduate assistantship or fellowship, SIU’s First Generation program or fund a term scholarship. • Expanded opportunities in the classroom – Establish an experiential learning fund; endow a gift to men’s or women’s sports; or support one of SIU’s existing student research programs. •Enhanced facilities and resources – Support renovations to an instructional space; endow a technology fund; or fund the launch of the SIU MakerSpace. • Deeper community engagement – Establish a fund to support research and outreach focusing on priorities in the community; establish an endowment for a cultural event linking the university and community; or provide one-time support to any cultural or education event. Cash

The quickest way to make a gift is to use a check, a credit card or an electronic fund transfer. Checks can be made payable to the SIU Foundation and submitted with a gift pledge form. Gifts made by credit card require the same form. You can also transfer funds to the foundation regularly by setting up an electronic fund transfer from a bank account. The foundation provides a form for that process, too.

Matching Gifts

Did you know that some companies match their employees’ contributions? It’s true. Many corporations will match the contribution of their employees, officers and directors – and, in some instances, spouses and retirees. Ask your company’s personnel or community relations department if your company has a matching gift program. Interested donors can also visit www.siuf.org and search for their employers on the “Matching Gifts” page.

Securities

Stocks, mutual funds, bonds and other publicly traded securities may be transferred as gifts through the foundation. There are various ways of transferring these gifts, such as a transfer of securities from the donor’s brokerage account or a delivery of the certificate to the foundation. Gifts of long-term appreciated securities may offer substantial tax savings. These gifts may be deducted at the fair market value without the recognition of capital gains.

Real and Personal Property

Gifts of real or personal property, also known as gifts-in-kind, can enhance the mission of the university. Gifts-in-kind may include a personal residence, farm equipment, artwork, rare books and other property that has a determinable value. The Internal Revenue Service has established rules for valuing these gifts, and the foundation reviews them prior to acceptance.

In Memoriam

Gifts also can be made in honor of memories of loved ones. By sending a name and address, the foundation will send an acknowledgement of the gift to the family. We will not mention the dollar amount of the gift unless you ask that we do so.

Annual Gifts

Each year, annual gifts contributed by alumni and friends of the university help provide scholarships to students, in addition to funding for research efforts, equipment and other needs. The annual giving campaign is an excellent opportunity for alumni to maintain close contact with their colleges or departments. Your annual support plays an essential role in ensuring SIU students and faculty have the best resources available to pursue their academic endeavors. Any kind of private support is crucial and will have a positive impact on the university.

Endowments

An endowment is a great way to ensure your gift has a noticeable, lasting effect on those it benefits. Contributions can be made in the form of cash, securities, life insurance or real estate. An endowment also can be established through a will or charitable trust. Each donor has the option of endowing a chair, professorship, visiting lecturer, faculty fellowship, graduate fellowship, scholarship or facility. The minimum amount necessary to create an endowment is $25,000 (payable over a period of up to five years).

IRA Gifts

An IRA charitable rollover is an effective way to help SIU advance its mission. Plus, the financial benefits to each donor are significant. You can: • Avoid taxes on transfers of up to $100,000 from an IRA to the foundation. • Satisfy the required minimum distribution for the year. • Reduce taxable income, even without itemizing deductions. • Make a gift that is not subject to the 50 percent deduction limits on charitable gifts. Contact your IRA plan administrator, and the funds can be directly transferred to the foundation.

Corporate Gifts

Gifts from corporations and foundations can play a significant role when it comes to serving students. Whether you are part of a large global company or a local business, a partnership with SIU can be mutually beneficial. Becoming involved with the university in this fashion can assist in the recruitment of SIU’s top students, and in internships, research opportunities and exposure during campus events.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

The SIU Foundation accepts contributions in the form

of cash, securities and real estate or personal property. Many corporations will match the contribution of

employees, officers, directors and, in some instances,

spouses and retirees. The SIU Foundation also accepts various types of planned gifts, whereby the donor

makes a gift commitment during his or her lifetime that will benefit the university. Planned gifts are in the form

of bequests, gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and life agreements.

ENDOWMENT INVESTMENTS

The SIU Foundation receives endowment contributions and invests

them into the endowment investment pool for perpetuity. An annual

distribution of a portion of the revenue generated from the endowment accounts is transferred to corresponding current accounts and used according to donors’ restrictions. Many of the contributions are

designated for scholarships, research and the general support of

MISSION STATEMENT The Southern Illinois University Foundation was established in 1942 to solicit, receive, hold and administer gifts from private sources for educational purposes. The SIU Foundation provides alumni and other friends as a means to invest in the future of their University. The Foundation is an independent, nonprofit corporation, which exists solely to further the mission of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. It is a designated 501 (c)3 organization with appropriate approval from the Internal Revenue Service to issue tax deductible receipts for private gifts received to support Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The mission of the SIU Foundation is to maximize private support for SIU Carbondale to assist the University in achieving its longrange goals. As outlined in the Strategic Plan, the activities, programs, and efforts of the SIU Foundation for the next two years will be driven by five priority focus areas. These areas are developing next wave fundraising programs, foster and improving relationships with key constituency groups, recruiting and retaining strong, high-capability staff, creating comprehensive marketing and communication strategies, and implementing board governance and leadership structures. Throughout the coming years, the SIU Foundation will continue to raise money with the help of others, praise our quality board and staff, and tell our story.
