The cover photo is a picture of the iconic Paul and Virginia statue. The statue of two small children was donated by the Class of 1887 and originally was located in the front of the entrance to Old Main, on the east side of the building.

It was moved to the Stone Center following the burning of Old Main in 1969.

A duplicate was cast in bronze and placed in the original fountain location between Shryock and Davies Gym, where the statue has stood since the 1970s.

The original is still at the garden of the Stone Center.

From the President I have always been proud to be part of this great university, but this year I may be the proudest. Despite the disruption of a pandemic in the last months of our fiscal year, we still managed to break records. Our many friends contributed more than $28 million to ensure that SIU and its students continue to thrive. We should take great pleasure and pride in this remarkable achievement.

We had several noteworthy milestones during 2019-20. In December, we extended the Forever SIU Campaign after it exceeded its original $75 million goal. With thanks to our alumni and friends, we are well on our way to meeting our new goal of $200 million before the end of June 2024. Our Day of Giving on March 4 raised more than $1.6 million for scholarships, academic programs and other critical needs.

Then the pandemic hit, and once again the SIU community rose to the challenge. Students were faced with many challenges, including lack of technology when courses were moved online and loss of jobs that help pay rent and buy food. While the university has long had an emergency fund to aid students in crisis, the funds were quickly depleted.

That’s when the foundation turned to the university’s alumni and friends for help. Since that first appeal in late March, more than 1,000 donors contributed more than $250,000 to the Saluki Cares Emergency Fund. SIU was able to respond to more than 2,000 student requests for food, laptops, infant care items, books, transportation, rent, utilities and more.

This is just one example of the many ways people open up their hearts to help other through the SIU Foundation.

This year’s annual report shares a few of those stories to give you better insight into why the commitment of alumni, staff and students runs so deep. You will learn how scholarships have positively changed the lives of students and read about the generosity of alumni, former professors and others across generations.

We have outstanding things in store for 2021, and we need your continued commitment to carry us forward through the second phase of the Forever SIU campaign.

SOLID LEADERSHIP

SIU Foundation Elects New Board Members in Fiscal Year 2020 Four alumni of Southern Illinois University have joined the SIU Foundation's Board of Directors. They are serving three-year terms that will conclude June 30, 2022.

The board governs the SIU Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization that provides alumni and friends a means to invest in the university. Established in 1942, the foundation solicits and administers gifts from private sources in support of SIU Carbondale's academic mission. Private funding is generated through annual giving, planned giving, major giving, corporate and foundation relations and campaigns.

William Casperson, MD, is a 1981 graduate of SIU School of Medicine. Now retired, he is a board-certified general surgeon and certified physician executive with fellowship in The American College of Surgeons and American Association for Physician Leadership. Dr. Casperson completed his surgical residency at the Jewish Hospital at Washington University in St. Louis in 1986 and began his surgical practice in Belleville, Illinois. After 18 years of practice, he transitioned to a full-time administrative position serving as chief medical officer, first at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and then with BJC HealthCare at Memorial Hospital in Belleville.

Dr. Casperson lives in Belleville with his wife, Terry, and they enjoy spending time with their adult children, Andrew and Sarah, and their families in Chicago.

Robert Jensen

Rob Jensen was hired in the Department of Psychology at SIU Carbondale as an assistant professor in 1981 and retired as a full professor in 2005. During that time, he served as a teacher, researcher and administrator. Rob primarily taught courses in neuroscience and psychopharmacology and received four outstanding teacher awards. Two of his doctoral students received the university’s Outstanding Dissertation Award.

As a researcher, he was principal investigator or co-principal investigator on 11 major research grants from agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute for Drug Abuse and the Office of Naval Research. Rob is the author or co-author of four books, 57 articles in referenced journals, 20 book chapters and numerous published abstracts.

In addition, he was awarded three U.S. patents and received the Kaplan Research Award.

Dr. Jensen served as associate dean for budget, personnel and research for the College of Liberal Arts for nine years and then served for several years as acting dean of the college. He then served for two years as associate provost for administration and for academic affairs.

He is active in university, civic and religious organizations. Rob served for six years as the president of the Jackson County Chapter of the American Heart Association and organized three Heart Walks. He has been a member of the board of the Southern Illinois Symphony Patrons Association since 2004 and a member of the board of the Friends of Morris Library since 2005. He spearheaded a campaign to construct an outdoor patio for Morris Library, a large project successfully completed through the donation of well over $100,000 by alumni and supporters of Morris Library.

Dr. Jensen and his wife, Melissa, have owned two successful local businesses.

They support Saluki Athletics, Morris Library, the Summer Music Festival, and they are members of the SIU Alumni Association. They reside in Carbondale.

Mike O’Day

Dr. Ella Lacey was a behavioral and social sciences faculty member for the SIU School of Medicine and, concurrently, held a faculty cross-appointment in the Department of Health Education. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1964, a master's degree in rehabilitation & human services in 1972, and a Ph.D. in education in 1979, all from SIU. She worked at the SIU School of Medicine for 22 years from 1972 until 1994, when she combined prior federal and state employment to enter full retirement prior to joining the Peace Corps.

She served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Malawi as a child survival specialist in a public health unit; she also trained other volunteers to become child survival specialists and to begin that country’s battle against polio. She was recruited by the CDC and assigned to either WHO or UNICEF as a polio consultant in the Global Polio Eradication Programme, serving seven assignments in African and Asian countries.

More recently, her volunteer service has been as a water and sanitation consultant, with her most extensive project having been on Remba Island in Kenya.

Locally, her volunteerism includes service to the “I Can Read” Program, Rotary Club of Carbondale, American Association of University Women and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, including a term as a nationally elected officer and serving on its national executive board.

Dr. Lacey has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Presidential Volunteer Service Award presented by the Peace Corps. While a faculty member in the School of Medicine, she received the University Women of Distinction Award and was recognized by the SIU Women's Studies program with the Ida B. Wells-Barnett Award. She was named by the SIU College of Education to its Alumni Hall of Fame and as its 1998 Commencement Speaker. She is also an SIU Carbondale Distinguished Alumnus and has received the Inspiring Women of Achievement and SIUC Distinguished Service awards.

Dr. Lacey makes her home, between her many humanitarian international travels, in Carbondale.

As a Carbondale native, Mike O’Day grew up swimming and fishing in Campus Lake, attending SIU sporting events, and living through some of the university’s rich history. He holds bachelor’s degrees in political science and computer science from SIU, earned in 1985 and 1986, respectively. During his time at SIU he was a threeyear letter winner as a tight end on the Saluki football team and proud member of 1983 Division I-AA national championship squad.

Upon graduation from SIU, O’Day moved to Chicago to begin a career in the information technology space, holding various positions with Johnson & Quinn, DC System and United Airlines. After earning a master of business administration degree from Northern Illinois University in 1994, O’Day worked in consulting as a senior associate with Booz, Allen & Hamilton out the company’s offices in Chicago and Bangkok, Thailand. While at Booz, Allen & Hamilton, he led numerous technology and business transformation initiatives for several multi-national organizations in the U.S. and Asia. Mr. O’Day is senior director of the managed transplant program at Optum, a division of UnitedHealth Group, where he has worked since 2009.

Mr. O’Day is a member of the 21st Century Skills Task Force established by the governor of Minnesota to inform education policy and shape curricula to meet the changing needs of today’s evolving workplace. He has been a lifetime member of the SIU Alumni Association since 2002.

Mr. O’Day resides with his wife, Jai, and two children in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Forever A Lasting SIU Legacy Campaign Extended After Surpassing $90 Million

A

three-year fundraising campaign for Southern Illinois University Carbondale was extended after raising $90 million, surpassing its goal of $75 million.

The Forever SIU campaign, slated to end in December 2019, was extended through June 2024 with a new goal of $200 million.

“We are continuing the momentum created through the generosity of our alumni and friends,” said former SIU Chancellor John M. Dunn, who was leading the university at the time of the event. “Their confidence in the future of SIU has inspired us to keep moving forward. Launching the extension during our 150th year gives us an additional platform to tell the story of our impact regionally, nationally and internationally.”

Dunn said the first phase of the campaign focused primarily on students and academic programs. Of the $90.6 million raised to date, $44.5 million supports student scholarships and fellowships while $43.6 million supports academic excellence.

“We are expanding our focus to include all aspects of the university,” he said. “While students and programs will still be front and center, we are also emphasizing faculty support, research and enhancement of facilities. This will be a comprehensive campaign that positions the university for the next 150 years.”

Goals for the expanded $200 million campaign are $80 million for students, including scholarships; $80 million for academic and supporting programs that promote student success; $20 million for faculty, including endowed chairs; $10 million for research initiatives and $10 million for facilities.

Dan Korte, an SIU Foundation board member who serves as co-chair of the Forever SIU campaign, said the decision to extend the campaign was based on its success to date.

“We had high expectations when we launched the campaign in January 2017, and our donors met and exceeded them,” said Korte, a 1985 graduate of the university’s College of Engineering.

“Extending the campaign allows us to connect with even more people who are committed to SIU’s future.”

SIU Foundation Board President David Delaney, a 1983 alumnus who studied agriculture, said that the campaign has tapped into the philanthropic spirit of alumni who want to give back to their alma mater.

“Philanthropy is powerful and rewarding for both the university and its donors,” Delaney said. “A gift can transform the life of a student or lead to a ground-breaking discovery. The foundation’s role is to build meaningful connections that benefit everyone involved.”

The campaign extension aligns the Forever SIU campaign with the majority of university fundraising campaigns, which typically last seven or eight years, according to Rae Goldsmith, chief executive officer of the foundation at the time of the announcement.

“Donors are often surprised that there are so many ways they can make gifts, from donating stocks or real estate to rolling over IRAs depending upon age,” she added. “From outright gifts to pledges to deferred gifts, there are many tools that can help a donor make a difference.”

A Lasting Legacy

Jim and Sue Legacy

J

im Legacy’s passion for agriculture started at an early age. Now, he and his wife, Sue, are sharing that passion with others.

The Legacys donated $1 million from their charitable trust to the SIU College of Agricultural Sciences. Per their wishes, 80 percent will help fund scholarships for SIU students who participated in Future Farmers of America, and 20 percent will go toward faculty.

Jim Legacy came to SIU in 1977 as professor in the College of Agricultural Sciences. He retired at the end of 2001.

“The most enjoyable experience of my life was being a professor,” he said. “As an instructor, you have these 18-year-old kids who come ready to learn from your knowledge. They carry a great deal of respect for a professor, and you end up playing an important and often extended role in their lives.”

During his tenure, he had multiple students come to his home for dinner and attended many of their graduation ceremonies and even weddings.

Legacy participated in international agricultural projects that took him all over the world.

“SIU gave me so many memorable experiences that I will never forget,” he said. “I traveled to Africa, China, Jamaica and Western Samoa to do meaningful work. It definitely enriched my life.”

Born on a dairy farm in upstate New York, Legacy’s first agricultural experience came when he was 10 years old and his

grandfather gave him 50 chicks to raise. As he neared high school, he received land from his father, and he milked 15 cows every day for nearly four years.

“I took math and science and vocational agriculture at Franklin Academy High School, and those classes furthered my interest in getting higher education degrees in agriculture,” Legacy said. “I had an agriculture teacher who encouraged me to go to college and get a degree in agriculture. I listened to him.”

Using the money he saved from milking cows, Legacy attended Cornell University, earning his doctorate from Cornell in 1976.

He was quickly hired by Purdue as an assistant professor of agriculture. After one year there, he began searching for a university that would give him the freedom to be his own person.

“SIU was a perfect match for me and my family. SIU allowed me to teach students how I wanted and run my program the way I saw fit,” he said.

The Legacys strongly believe in the value of the FFA, which made it the clear choice for financial support.

“The FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of high school students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success,” he said. “There are over 700,000 student members in grades 7 through 12 who belong to FFA chapters, and what is surprising is that most of them are not farm kids.

“It provides students with a huge structure. It teaches them how to speak in public, gives them direction and shapes them into leaders.”

Legacy said there aren’t enough instructors to teach all these students. Last year, Illinois universities graduated 28 individuals who received an Agricultural Education Teacher Certification. However, there were 97 open teaching positions throughout secondary schools in the state. He’s hoping more scholarship opportunities will encourage more agriculture majors to obtain a teaching certificate.

Agricultural programs like the FFA are the few that still exist,” Legacy said. “It’s a program that can make so many young kids shine. My hope is that this donation will help SIU and further the mission of the FFA.”

A Helping Hand Every donation made during the SIU Day of Giving benefits students.

That means funding scholarships, improving facilities or supporting a cause. Of course, some donations have an even more direct impact.

That’s what Diamoneek Green found out when she earned the 2020 Barbara Brown Internship from the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.

For a political science major with a pre-law specialty, the chance to work with state legislators in the General Assembly was perfect.

“I’m interning with the Illinois Municipal League,” Green said. “It’s a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that represents Illinois municipalities on a state and federal level.”

Of course, moving from Carbondale to Springfield posed a significant financial challenge. Green was locked into a rental agreement in Carbondale but also needed a place in Springfield. Having two rent bills would be difficult for anyone, especially a student.

“Even with plans to work while doing the internship, it was going to be impossible to make ends meet. I always prided myself on being financially independent,” she said.

That’s when Green reached out for help. She wrote a letter to Todd Bryson, director of the Student Multicultural Resource Centers, and Linda Baker, professor at the Simon Institute.

Soon, Green received a call from Bryson and Baker informing her she would receive $1,000 from the Black Resource Center Emergency Tuition Fund. That money was donated during the 2019 SIU Day of Giving.

“SIU has been a second family to me. It’s not guaranteed that you’ll go to a school where people will do everything they can to make sure you succeed. I want to make them proud.”

W

hat can someone do with a degree in English literature? Plenty, and SIU alumnus Jim Hood is the perfect example.

Hood’s degree propelled him into a successful career in the news and information industry.

“When you study and research literature, you learn how to condense a whole lot of information down to the essence,” he said. “In my opinion, it’s impossible to go wrong studying English literature. If you get a real base studying and researching literature, you can go out and do anything.”

Hood ’69 and his wife Joan, recently established the James R. and Joan Lisante Hood Fund for New Media Technology

with a $30,000 gift. In 2020, the James R. and Joan Lisante Hood Endowed Scholarship for Creative Nonfiction will be created with an additional $40,000 contribution.

John Gardner was Hood’s favorite professor. Gardner had built a reputation as a rebel in the field of medieval studies, specifically in the study of Geoffrey Chaucer.

“I remember Gardner reading ‘Canterbury Tales’ to my class.

He would read it line by line and explain it in middle English,” Hood said. “It was as much anthropology as English literature.

Gardner transformed it from a study of old bones into a study of beautiful poetry and fiction.”

While a student at SIU, Hood gravitated toward local news and spent most of his time as a radio reporter and freelance correspondent covering the social upheavals of the 1960s. He served as the news director of WSIU radio, covering civil rights and anti-Vietnam War activities. Hood also worked at WINI in Murphysboro and WJPF in Herrin.

“I remember finishing up the 2 p.m. news at WJPF when the phone rang,” he said. “A guy asked if I was the one who just delivered the news, and when I said that I had, he offered me a job at a radio station in Phoenix. After graduation, I packed my bags and went to Phoenix.”

Hood also regularly sat in on classes taught by Buckminster Fuller. He credits Fuller, in part, for his entrepreneurial spirit.

“I never forgot what I learned at SIU,” he said. “Fuller taught me about design, how to look at problems, and then how to think outside the box to solve those problems.”

Hood worked for 14 years as an editor and executive for Associated Press outlets across the country. His knack for solving problems coupled with his technical skills pushed him to start several startup companies, such as Zap News and Consumer Affairs.

“I’m the guy you can blame for consumers who won’t buy anything until they read the reviews,” Hood said.

Hood, now semi-retired, lives in Fairfax, Virginia, and runs Fairfax News.

“Basically, it’s my personal hobby. We cover Washington, D.C., and do stories on cops and robbers – that kind of thing.”

By giving to SIU’s creative writing program, he hopes to help bridge the gap between creative writing and technology.

“Sometimes people with a technical bent don’t know how to express themselves, and literary types are hopeless when it comes to technical stuff,” Hood said. “It’s my hope that by implementing new media projects using technology, it will help one or two starving English majors.”

Hood credits SIU with introducing him to some of the brightest people he ever met.

“I’ve always felt obligated to give back to SIU. It helps diverse students and attracts students from other countries.

It also helps to lift up students from inner cities like East St. Louis and Chicago,” he said. “I think big universities like SIU need the benefits of philanthropy much more than private institutions.”

Excitement Reigns For Day of Giving For the fourth straight year, the campus community came together to make the SIU Day of Giving a success, raising more than $1.6 million through more than 2,441 individual gifts. Among academic programs, the College of Liberal Arts received more than $197,960, giving it the highest amount of any college or unit. The School of Medicine had the highest number of donors, raising more than $196,336 through more than 285 gifts. Among non-academic programs, Saluki Athletics received the most in total donations ($139,301). The Balancing Education, Experience and Reality Scholarship raised the most gifts for $51,473 (815). Donations came from 43 states and 10 countries.

On campus, the spirit of the day was evident at booths where students and visitors participated in virtual reality demonstrations. Participants experienced viewing the Carbondale campus using Oculus Quest headsets provided by the College of Liberal Arts creative writing program. The SIU Alumni Association also hosted an open house at its newly renovated Alumni Welcome Center.

Feeding the Saluki Spirit

A

s the nation grapples with effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Saluki spirit continues to shine. The kindness and generosity of one SIU Carbondale alumnus is one powerful example.

John Kabat ’84, ’85 is the president of the SIU Agriculture Alumni Association. After retiring last year from a 34-year teaching career at Mount Vernon Township High School, he continues to teach part-time in the Cooperative Education Program as well as agriculture-related classes. He also serves as the national Future Farmers of America advisor for Mount Vernon’s FFA Chapter.

Recently, he and his students packaged, delivered and donated more than 2,700 meals to the SIU’s Saluki Food Pantry to help students in need due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2,700 meals were part of Kabat’s larger effort to feed more than 10,000 people in his community.

Kabat got the idea when he encountered an organization called Meals of Hope at a national FFA convention in Indianapolis last fall. While there, he met with volunteers from the charitable organization, based in Naples, Florida. Its mission is to empower communities to come together to end hunger.

That mission resonated with what is dear to his heart: feeding people who suffer from food insecurities.

Kabat came back to Mount Vernon and began identifying organizations that could benefit from food donations. He and a small team assembled and donated more than 8,800 lunches to nursing homes, shelters and senior citizen centers throughout Southern Illinois.

“When I heard that SIU's Saluki Food Pantry had been gathering food to fill emergency bags for students who find themselves in need, I knew where I needed to focus my remaining efforts,” Kabat said.

With the help of 22 parents and students, who are involved with the FFA chapter, 2,700 meals were assembled in about three hours. The idea wasn’t entirely Kabat’s; several of his students expressed the desire to help feed those in need.

“I try to instill a spirit of giving back in each of my students and, in this project, I feel I succeeded,” Kabat said. “Even though I run a farm that feeds about 4,000 people yearly, my priority remains with the 250 kids I teach each year. I want to show them what it feels like to help others, show kindness and give back.

“If I can encourage them to go forth and multiply good deeds of their own, then I will have done my job well. God has blessed me with a sound mind and body. He’s also blessed me with my family and the farm. I never have taken any of this for granted, and I have enjoyed living my life that way,” he said.

Kabat graduated from SIU in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education and double minors in agricultural mechanics and animal science. He received his master’s degree from SIU in 1985 in agricultural education.

“I loved my time at SIU,” he said. “SIU showed me the beauty of diversity and learning from people and their cultures from all over the world. It showed me that we are all equal and we are all in life together.”

Tena Bennett, the director at the Student Center, home to the Saluki Food Pantry, called Kabat a truly great man and said the food donation came at a critical time.

“These meals will provide hundreds of our students with food during an unprecedented time in our world. The Saluki Food Pantry was completely stocked before the pandemic and has been nearly wiped out as we supply emergency food bags to our students, many of whom had community jobs that have been suspended during the stay-at-home order.”

Salukis Helping Salukis As the pandemic evolved, many college students struggled to continue their education. Some lacked technology or internet access to make the sudden transition to online learning. Others lost jobs due to the closure of businesses or couldn't work due to the closure of schools, putting stress on budgets for necessities like food, medication, rent and diapers.

SIU Carbondale has long had an emergency fund to aid students in crisis, but the pandemic quickly depleted available funding. That’s when the SIU Foundation, which raises funds to benefit the university, turned to the university’s alumni and friends for help.

Since the foundation’s first appeal on March 24, more than 1,000 donors have contributed over $240,000 to the Saluki Cares Student Emergency Fund. The fund provides financial assistance for needs not covered by traditional financial aid or scholarships. Students apply for support by going to salukicares.siu.edu.

“The funds raised have been used to help students meet their physical and financial needs,” said Lori Stettler, vice chancellor for student affairs. “The virus knows no boundaries, and our students are no exception. They are experiencing things like homelessness, food insecurity, inability to pay rent and utilities, securing medications and taking care of their dependents.”

Thanks to the donations, SIU responded to more than 2,000 student requests. The university has distributed hundreds of boxes of food and more than 100 laptops; offered to cover internet access; helped students with children by supplying diapers, baby food and other infant care items; and processed more than 300 emergency fund requests for rent, utilities, medicine, books and transportation.

“The generosity of our alumni has been amazing,” Stettler said. “This outpouring of money, food and love brings to life the saying ‘Once a Saluki, always a Saluki.’ I am proud of our alumni who reached deep into their hearts and pockets to assist our students. We are all stronger together.”

‘SIU Changed my Life’

r. R. Lawrence Hatchett isn’t an SIU alumnus, but he’s most certainly a Saluki.

Raised in the historically black coal mining town of Colp, he attended University School, which was located in Pulliam Hall. It wasn’t easy for a child growing up during a time of racial division, but SIU made him feel right at home.

“SIU changed my life. Walking through campus on my way to class in third grade was like a dream world,” Dr. Hatchett said.

“There was a feeling of utopia, and I never felt so accepted, so loved and appreciated, and it meant everything to me, and it still does even to this day.”

It’s that connection that brought Dr. Hatchett to SIU with the following pledge – $100,000 over four years to establish the Phoenix Cannabis Production Scholarship within the School of Agricultural Sciences. The scholarship, named after his son, Phoenix, will be available to African-American and Hispanic students.

“It was this campus, this university and my childhood experience that changed my life at a very critical time. I want the university and the caring people there to offer this same tremendous opportunity to improve the lives of talented young people by adding to the well-needed diversity in the cannabis industry,” he said.

Over time, Dr. Hatchett said he hopes to develop externships and create an endowment for the program.

Beyond his $100,000 commitment, Dr. Hatchett provided an additional $6,000 to fund the development of facilities in the

School of Agricultural Sciences building to support the cannabis program. The upgrades will help improve research opportunities.

“This is really important for us,” said Karen Jones, faculty coordinator for Plant, Soil and Agricultural Systems. “This financial support helps us stay modern and gives students the opportunity to work with plants.”

Even though recreational cannabis only became legal to sell in Illinois at the start of 2020, SIU has been working toward having a program in place for years.

“Our goal is to help the people of Southern Illinois to explore this new, emerging career path,” Jones said. “Any time you start a new initiative, getting started is one of the biggest hurdles.”

Once Dr. Hatchett became familiar with Karen Jones and the School of Agricultural Sciences, he knew SIU was the right place for his investment.

“You never realize how much talent there is in a department until you look,” he said. “We are hoping to develop a footprint in the industry and highlight the talent we have.”

After attending Marquette University on a full basketball scholarship, Dr. Hatchett completed his medical school education at the University of Chicago and completed his internship and residency training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He eventually finished his fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital through Harvard Medical School.

A well-known urologist, Dr. Hatchett founded Southern Illinois Urology in Herrin in 2003. He has also spent time as

a speaker for Pfizer pharmaceuticals, being featured both nationally and internationally.

“My path into the cannabis industry was atypical,” he said.

“My mother, who was around 90 years old, was seeking pain relief alternatives, so I began researching cannabis.”

Once Illinois legalized recreational cannabis use, Dr. Hatchett became majority owner of Cannabliss Depot.

“Medical cannabis helps with PTSD, seizure disorders, pain relief, and it has some anti-cancer applications,” he said. “It also helps with drug addiction if someone is hooked on opioids.”

According to Dr. Hatchett, doctors share the responsibility when it comes to solving these issues.

“We should be part of the solution and play a role in the future of cannabis,” he said. “We should allow research and prepare for the expansion of its use. I, personally, never used cannabis in my life, but I think it can help people.”

Challenges will arise, but Dr. Hatchett said he believes it’s possible to figure out all the legal details.

“I see the negative. We’re not promoting it for the young,” he said. “This is about responsible, adult use. We hope people will use good judgment.”

Greg Horrell

Pizza & B.E.E.R. Greg Horrell of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, had not been back to SIU since he graduated in 1991. It was only when the Carbondale in the ’80s and ’90s group was established on Facebook that he reconnected with his alma mater. “It was all the old stories in the group about how much fun we had that pulled me back in,” Horrell said.

During the 2019 SIU Day of Giving, members of the group made 1,100 donations totaling more than $50,000, enough to endow two Balancing Education, Experience and Reality (B.E.E.R.) scholarships. The group earned a trophy for having the most individual gifts made for a non-academic unit.

Horrell made the trek to Carbondale last spring to participate in the trophy presentation. He took home a weekend full of memories, a Quatro’s cup and an SIU Alumni Association koozie.

“Every time I pull in the garage and see that cup, it reminds me of the good times at SIU,” he said.

Last September, Horrell started dropping his change into the Quatro’s cup.

“My daughter took the coins to the bank machine and said that it was a perfect coin dump at $187 dollars,” he said. “I started in 1987. I’ve asked myself, ‘What are the odds that it would be $187 even?’” Horrell said.

Fellow member Jim Raffensperger challenged donors to add their graduation year onto any gift they made to the SIU Day of Giving.

Horrell already planned to throw in an extra $100 to the $187 he saved. “Jim made me want to add $.91 more, so count me in for $287.91,” he said.

Horrell has a new challenge for the group between now and the Day of Giving in 2021.

“What if just 40 percent of the group put their loose change in their Quatro’s cups for the next year? Could we raise $500,000 for B.E.E.R.?” he said.

That may sound like a lofty goal, but if the B.E.E.R. group has proven anything it’s that its members’ love for SIU, Carbondale’s iconic pizza joints and giving back shouldn’t ever be underestimated.

Art Donation Adds Value

effery Leving ’74 is man of many passions.

He’s a lawyer, author, artist, collector, movie producer and radio host, among other things. He’s also a Saluki.

“I enjoyed SIU because it was a great place to learn,” he said.

“I developed lifelong relationships there. The university is full of great people.”

Leving recently donated a large collection of artworks to Morris Library. Most of the pieces were painted by John James Audubon; others were done by Pierre-Joseph Redouté. The collection is valued at more than $500,000.

“When the collection of boxes arrived and we started opening them up I was overwhelmed,” said John Pollitz, dean of library affairs. “This donation is a reflection of how our alumni hold this place dear.”

Audubon was a well-known American ornithologist, naturalist and painter. He was noted for documenting birds in their natural habitat and is credited for identifying 25 new species.

Redouté was a painter and botanist from Belgium. He was the official court artist for Marie Antoinette and painted for the wives of Napoleon Bonaparte.

“There are hundreds of rare naturalist engravings,” Leving said, referring to his donation. “Some are birds, and there are paintings of mammals as well. Redouté is one of the greatest watercolorists to live.”

The art collection features the beauty of nature, which is why Leving thought SIU was the perfect place for it.

“SIU means a lot to me,” he said. “I grew up in Chicago, and when I came to Carbondale, I connected to nature. I knew these artists would connect well with SIU.” Pollitz echoed that sentiment.

“This collection is so well suited to our university because we have such a strong relationship with nature,” he said. “We are surrounded by the Shawnee National Forest, we are in the center of the Mississippi Flyway, and finally, we are in the midst of the land that Audubon roamed finding his birds to draw. He lived for nine years in Henderson, Kentucky.”

Having such a collection available on campus will have a great impact on students.

“The collection is a resource for classes across the curriculum,” Pollitz said. “A self-taught artist, Audubon’s technique of combining media was unique to the times. Art and design students can study his economy of design as well as his precise detail.”

Giving students this valuable learning experience was exactly what Leving had in mind.

“Students are usually viewing replicas,” he said. “Now, they’ll be able to really see, touch, feel and study the real thing.”

Leving himself is an artist. His works can be viewed at www. levinggallery.com. He’s sold pieces to entertainer Queen Latifah and astronaut Mark Kelly.

“It’s a hobby of mine. It’s purely recreational,” he said.

Through that relationship, Leving was able to be an extra in the movie.

Later, he was an associate producer of the movie “Little Men,” starring Greg Kinnear.

“All of this stuff, I was exposed to at SIU,” Leving said.

From 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday mornings, Leving hosts a radio show on Power 92.3 FM in Chicago. Between songs, he gives legal advice.

Before 92.3, Leving hosted a radio show on Soul 106.3.

While doing that show, he interviewed U.S. Sen. Barack Obama when he was running for president in 2008. Obama was elected later that year.

For Obama’s second term, Leving joined the National Finance Committee. Leving served in that role for the duration of Obama’s second term.

Leving has also spent years seeking rare historic documents and artifacts. His collection is vast and includes a petition written and signed by George Washington, an early Catholic Bible, diaries kept by Martin Luther King Jr.’s assistant and a sculpture by Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

“I’ve been collecting since I was a little boy,” he said. “I try to collect things that are thought to have disappeared.

Once I know what I’m looking for, I usually find it.”

Someday, he hopes to share more of his collection with SIU, whether it be in the form of another donation or loaning it for an exhibit at the University Museum.

Leving is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on fathers’ rights. He’s been featured on talk shows and news programs numerous times.

His law office employs 22 lawyers, working on cases dealing with fathers’ rights, child custody, divorce proceedings and family law.

In 1986, he co-authored Illinois’ Joint Custody Law, which allows a judge to force joint custody when he/she sees fit, even if one party objects. He also runs the Illinois Council on Responsible Fatherhood.

He is the author of three books on the topic, “Fathers’ Rights,”“Divorce Wars: A Field Guide to Winning Tactics, Preemptive Strikes, and Top Maneuvers When Divorce Gets Ugly,” and “How to Be a Good Divorced Dad.” The SIU Foundation reviews for acceptance gifts of real or personal property, known as gifts-in-kind, that enhance the mission of the university. These may include a personal residence, farm equipment, artworks, rare books and other property that has a determinable value.

“I had some of the best experiences at SIU,” Leving said. “I look forward to knowing the art I donated is being utilized for educational purposes.”

Meet Scholarship Recipient Jamal Kinchen Alfred Jamal Kinchen is a student with many talents. A junior at SIU, Kinchen is working on double majors in both aviation management and piano performance. His dream is to one day be a commercial airline pilot but he hopes he can continue to play piano on the side.

A University Excellence scholar and a recipient of the Steven Barwick scholarship, Kinchen says that if it wasn’t for those scholarships, he would not be enrolled at SIU today.

“My parents said they could not afford to send me to college.

The only way I could go was if I received enough scholarships.

When I opened that letter telling me I won those two scholarships, it felt as if a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders,” Kinchen said. “I am forever grateful for those scholarships.”

When asked what he likes most about SIU, Kinchen could not pick just one thing. “I really like the size of the university.

For me, it’s not too small and yet it isn’t too big. I also don’t feel like I’m just another face in the crowd. Everyone in both the music and the aviation programs have been so helpful. I feel like I know everyone – from students to professors. It just feels very comfortable,” he said.

Kinchen encourages alumni to give back to SIU. “It is so hard financially for so many students here. I just hope that alumni remember how they felt when they were a student.

A helping hand is what so many students need right now,” Kinchen said.

“I hope one day to create a scholarship specially for disadvantaged students. I’d like to focus on giving back to minorities. I think scholarships would encourage more minorities to receive an education like I have.”

or Neil Swartz, it was a unique homecoming.

A 1978 graduate of SIU’s automotive technology program, Swartz is one of many alumni who remembers the program’s previous home, the old military barracks in Carterville.

Of course, now automotive technology students spend their days at the Transportation Education Center at Southern Illinois Airport in Murphysboro. In late August of 2019, Swartz walked around TEC for the first time.

“It is like an island paradise,” Swartz said. “This is my first time back here. It’s overwhelming. It’s even more impressive than I could have imagined.”

A strong supporter of the program, Swartz played an integral role in the planning process of the facility. He served on the SIU Automotive National Advisory Board for 20-plus years and secured the first corporate donation for TEC. “I championed Toyota’s corporate donation,” said Swartz, who has worked for Toyota Motor North America since 1985 and is vice president of the company’s Parts Supply Chain. “It demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to the communities we serve, higher education and automotive excellence.”

More recently, he funded an endowed scholarship. The Neil Swartz Scholarship Endowment Fund is awarded to an automotive technology student.

Toyota matches his gifts so as Swartz adds thousands of dollars each year to his fund, Toyota generously donates the same amount dollar for dollar. Many companies, both large and small, offer similar matching gift programs to employees.

“I know what my education at SIU meant to me. I have a lot of gratitude to SIU, particularly the automotive program.

It allowed me to learn, grow, and have a successful career,” Swartz said. “However, I believe you’re not truly successful until you can give back.”

During his tenure, extensive changes in both the curriculum and the facilities were made. In 1907, the Illinois General Assembly approved the bachelor of education degree – the first being granted by Southern Illinois Normal University in 1909. Wheeler Hall, Allyn Hall and Anthony Hall were built during Parkinson’s administration.

Giving Made Easy Are you interested in giving to SIU but unsure about how to get started? No problem. The SIU Foundation is proud to offer a number of ways to make donations of all sizes.

Cash

The quickest way to give is to make a gift is to use check, credit card or electronic fund transfer.

Checks can be made payable to the SIU Foundation and submitted with a gift pledge form. Gifts made by credit card require the same form.

You can transfer funds to the foundation regularly by setting up an electronic fund transfer from a bank account.

The foundation also provides a form for that process.

Matching Gifts

Did you know some companies match their employees’ contributions? It’s true.

Many corporations will match the contribution of their employees, officers, directors and, in some instances, spouses and retirees.

Ask your company’s personnel or community relations department if your company has a Matching Gift Program.

Securities

Stocks, mutual funds, bonds and other publicly traded securities may be transferred as gifts through the foundation.

There are various ways of transferring these gifts, such as a transfer of securities from the donor’s brokerage account or delivery of the actual certificate to the foundation.

Gifts of long-term appreciated securities may offer a substantial tax savings. These gifts may be deducted at the fair market value without the recognition of capital gains.

Real and Personal Property

Gifts of real or personal property, also known as gifts-inkind, can enhance the mission of the university.

Gifts-in-kind may include your personal residence, farm equipment, artwork, rare books and other property that has a determinable value. The IRS has established rules for valuing these gifts, and the foundation reviews them prior to acceptance.

In Memoriam

Gifts can also be made in the honor or memory of a loved one. By sending a name and address, the foundation will send an acknowledgement of the gift to the family. We will not mention the dollar amount of the gift unless you ask that we do so.

Annual Gifts

Each year, annual gifts contributed by alumni and friends of the university help provide scholarships to students as well as funding for research efforts, equipment and other needs.

The annual giving campaign is an excellent opportunity for alumni to maintain close contact with their college or department.

Your annual support plays an essential role in ensuring students and faculty have the best resources available to pursue their academic endeavors. Any kind of private support is crucial and will have a positive impact on SIU.

Endowments

An endowment is a great way to ensure your gift has a noticeable, lasting effect on those it benefits.

Contributions can be made in the form of cash, securities, life insurance or real estate. An endowment may also be established through a will or charitable trust.

A donor has the option of endowing a chair, professorship, visiting lecturer, faculty fellowship, graduate fellowship, scholarship or facility. The minimum amount necessary to create an endowment is $25,000 (payable over a period of up to five years).

IRA Gifts

An IRA charitable rollover is an effective way to help SIU further its mission.

Plus, the financial benefits to the donor are significant.

You can: • Avoid taxes on transfers of up to $100,000 from an IRA to the foundation.

• Satisfy the required minimum distribution for the year.

• Reduce taxable income, even without itemizing deductions.

• Make a gift that is not subject to the 50 percent deduction limits on charitable gifts.

Contact your IRA plan administrator. The funds can be directly transferred to the foundation.

Corporate Gifts

Gifts from corporations and foundations play a significant role when it comes to serving students. Whether you are part of a large, global company or a local business, a partnership with SIU is mutually beneficial.

Becoming involved with the university can assist in the recruitment of SIU’s top students, internships, research opportunities and exposure during campus events.

The SIU Foundation also accepts various types of planned gifts, whereby the donor makes a gift commitment during his or her lifetime that will benefit the university. FINANCIALS ENDOWMENT INVESTMENTS The SIU Foundation receives endowment contributions and invests them into the endowment investment pool for perpetuity. An annual distribution of a portion of the revenue generated from the endowment accounts is transferred to corresponding current accounts and used according to donors’ restrictions. Mission Statement The Southern Illinois University Foundation was established in 1942 to solicit, receive, hold and administer gifts from private sources for educational purposes. The SIU Foundation provides alumni and other friends as a means to invest in the future of their University.

The Foundation is an independent, non-profit corporation, which exists solely to further the mission of Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

It is a designated 501(c)3 organization with appropriate approval from the Internal Revenue Service to issue tax deductible receipts for private gifts received to support Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The mission of the SIU Foundation is to maximize private support for SIU Carbondale to assist the University in achieving its long-range goals.As outlined in the Strategic Plan, the activities, programs, and efforts of the SIU Foundation for the next two years will be driven by five priority areas.

These areas are developing next wave fundraising programs, fostering and improving relationships with key constituency groups, recruiting and retaining strong, high-capability staff, creating comprehensive marketing and communication strategies, and implementing board governance and leadership structures. Throughout the coming years, the SIU Foundation will continue to raise money with the help of others, praise our quality board and staff, and tell our story.
