Our 2012 Annual Report includes stories that exemplify the impact of private giving. For instance, the Paul Simon Institute is presenting a wonderful opportunity to deserving students through the Alexander Lane Internship Program. The internship – named in honor of SIU Carbondale’s first AfricanAmerican male student – presents at least one student with an opportunity to work with a minority member of the Illinois General Assembly. Alumni and donors, in short order, have responded enthusiastically to this initiative.

A generous gift from Tom Murray, a retired executive in Chicago, is providing financial support to students in the College of Engineering. The Thomas J. Murray Scholarships are presented to top-notch students in the college. Tom, who also serves on the Special Olympics Illinois Board, understands the importance of philanthropy. He has accepted a leadership role with Special Olympics, in addition to stepping up for his alma mater.

Also, you will read about a special event hosted by the Simmons Cancer Institute in SIU’s School of Medicine in Springfield.

Denim & Diamonds, now in its 12th year, raises funds to support innovative research projects and resources to comfort patients. We have all been touched by cancer in some form or fashion. Needless to say, this is a wonderful cause. And supporters have rallied around this effort as the event typically sells out with more than 600 guests on an annual basis.

The philanthropy shown in each of these initiatives is exemplary. Alumni and donors are truly advocates and champions for students who are striving to attain knowledge in their profession, or working hard to fund an education toward their college degree. Additionally, as demonstrated through Denim & Diamonds, you can have an even broader impact in the fight against cancer. Big things are truly within reach because of your commitment and devotion to this University.

Last year, I wrote about a sense of community. This is essential.

If our volunteers, alumni, friends, and University leadership and staff continue pulling together, the possibilities are endless.

It is up to all of us to foster a bright future for SIU Carbondale.

Grad Students Gain Investment Fund Experience

Graduate students in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s College of Business now have a half-million opportunities to turn their classroom knowledge into valuable hands-on experience.

The SIU Foundation is funding the new Graduate Student Investment Fund (GSIF), giving graduate students the opportunity gain expertise in portfolio management and investment research by managing $500,000 in Foundation assets.

Marketing Executive Scott Moller Is Paying It Forward

Scott Moller is a proponent of attaining hands-on experience prior to graduation. It seems to have worked out for the 1985 journalism graduate.

Scott and his sister, Julie, served stints in the position of Promotion Director for the SIU Arena.

They assumed responsibility for marketing all concerts, touring shows, and non-athletic events. The experience laid a solid foundation for the brother-sister tandem. They subsequently founded Marketing Werks, a $100-million experiential marketing agency.

The SIU alumnus aspires to reward students who are taking a similar path to success.

He established the $100,000 Scott Moller Scholarship Endowment to honor students in SIU’s College of Mass Communication and Media Arts who are in good academic standing. Preference will be given to students who are employed or participating in an internship while enrolled at SIU. “Internships and work experiences show potential employers that a student has an interest, capacity, and desire to work. It also helps a student figure out where he/she may want to apply his/her talents,” Moller says. “My experiences in college solidified my interest in marketing and promotions.”

Additionally, Scott says he worked at WTAO, a local radio station; WSIL-TV3, and interned during the summer at KWK-FM in St. Louis. Scott recalls his SIU experience as “holistic.” And it wasn’t unusual for him to serve in multiple jobs at any given time.

“My grade point average might have been a bit

better if I solely focused on coursework. But conversely, it taught me an important life lesson about how to balance multiple and varied demands,” he says. “I fully understand how challenging it can be to juggle these diverse priorities. So I believe a student learning to balance these demands should be warranted extra consideration.”

In addition to his endowment, Scott contributed $4,000 to allow the College to award scholarships immediately.

Scott and Julie recently sold Marketing Werks. Both Scott and his sister, Julie, remain in their current roles as Co-CEOs through 2013, then they will act in a consulting capacity to the company.

“I’m fortunate to find myself in a position to give back to organizations that helped me grow. I can draw several straight lines back to things I learned while at SIU that helped me shape my approach to building a successful company,” he says. “It just makes sense to try to help others to have similar experiences and opportunities for growth.”

And Scott is hopeful that fellow SIU alumni follow his lead.

“We’ve all benefitted from our SIU experience and have an obligation to bring the next generation along. SIU is such a unique and special place to fulfill this responsibility,” he says. “I realize that everyone does not have the means to fund a scholarship. But there are many other ways to give back. Simply being an advocate for SIU and encouraging students to enroll helps a lot.”

Wilson Scholarship Available to Female Medical Students

For many students, it is challenge to afford the expenses of completing medical school.

Margaret Wilson understands this from firsthand experience and aims to support those who follow in her footsteps.

Wilson, a retired pediatrician, became familiar with the Springfield-based SIU Medical School when she moved to Jacksonville in 1975. A graduate of Park University in Parkville, Mo., she proceeded to earn her medical degree at the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago.

And Wilson can relate to the obstacles students were striving to overcome.

“I struggled financially through college and medical school, despite receiving student loans and part-time jobs,” she says. “And young men were paid at a higher rate than women under those circumstances. I’m at a point in my life that I can use my resources to assist a young person. Hopefully, this will be the end result.”

Wilson, who completed an internship at Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital (now Rush Medical School) in Chicago, followed by two years of pediatrics residency at University of Tennessee in Memphis, has established the $100,000 Margaret Wilson Scholarship Endowment. The award will be presented to a female medical student in their second, third, and/or fourth

year of education at the SIU School of Medicine.

Recipients must demonstrate academic excellence and financial need.

Also, preference will be given to residents of downstate Illinois.

“In comparison to undergraduate institutions, few scholarships are available in medical schools. But students often have significant debt and continue to accumulate it until graduation,” she says. “SIU is an important provider of health care and training in the central and southern Illinois regions.

Students who are from those areas are most likely to practice in downstate communities.”

Wilson has strong ties to SIU. Her husband, Charles, who she met in medical school, is a supervisor of SIU’s urology residents’ clinic. Her son, Morgan, is a 2005 graduate of the School of Medicine. Morgan is on the School’s faculty, as assistant professor of dermatology.

Wilson also had the opportunity to work closely with SIU medical students early in her pediatric practice.

“Students were offered elective time to spend with community physicians and I hosted them on a couple of occasions,” she says. “It was enjoyable to teach and mentor young people.”

Endowment Investments The SIU Foundation receives endowment contributions and invests them into the endowment investment pool for perpetuity. An annual distribution of a portion of the revenue generated from the endowment accounts is transferred to corresponding current accounts and used according to donors’ restrictions. Many of the contributions are designated for scholarships, research, and the general support of colleges and departments. Please visit www.siuf.org for more information.

Contributions The SIU Foundation accepts contributions in the form of cash, securities and real estate or personal property. Many corporations will match the contribution of employees, officers, directors, and in some instances, spouses and retirees. The SIU Foundation also accepts various types of planned gifts, whereby the donor makes a gift commitment during his or her lifetime that will benefit the University in the future. Planned gifts are in the form of bequests, gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, and life agreements.

The SIU Foundation applies a one-time, six percent supplement fee to all gifts of cash and securities. The Foundation uses five percent of the fee to fund central fundraising operations and returns one percent to the generating colleges or units to support their specific fundraising activities. It is the Foundation’s goal to increase private support to enhance the University’s mission of being a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate research institution. Donors contributed a total of more than $6.5 million during FY13.

The Southern Illinois University Foundation

was established in 1942 to solicit, receive, hold and administer gifts from private sources for educational purposes. The SIU Foundation provides alumni and other friends a means to invest in the future of their university. The Foundation is an independent, nonprofit corporation, which exists solely to further the mission of SIU Carbondale. It is a designated 501 (c)3 organization with appropriate approval from the Internal Revenue Service to issue tax deductible receipts for private gifts received to support Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The mission of the SIU Foundation is to maximize private support for SIU Carbondale to assist the University in achieving its long-range goals. As outlined in the Strategic Plan, the activities, programs, and efforts of the SIU Foundation will be driven by five priority focus areas. These areas are developing next wave fundraising programs; fostering and improving relationships with key constituency groups; recruiting and retaining strong, highcapability staff; creating comprehensive marketing strategies; and implementing improved board governance and leadership structures. Throughout the coming years, the SIU Foundation will continue to raise money with the help of others, tout our quality board and staff, and tell its story.
