From the President It is with great pride and gratitude that I reflect upon the remarkable journey we have undertaken during my tenure as the president of the SIU Foundation Board of Directors. These past two years have been nothing short of transformative, as we shattered previous records in fundraising – raising nearly $64 million – and expanded our outreach initiatives to unprecedented levels. Through your collective dedication and unwavering commitment, the SIU Foundation has achieved exceptional milestones in supporting our institution’s students and faculty. The introduction of the Saluki Takeover Tours and the spectacular Saluki Ball has galvanized our community and paved the way for expanded support that will empower the next generation of leaders. Our resounding success is not simply measured in dollars raised, but in the tangible impact these funds have on the lives of those we serve. In FY23, more than 14 percent of all SIU students received an SIU Foundation scholarship, and that number continues to grow. We also reached new heights during our annual Day of Giving, raising more than $4 million from 3,702 gifts. As I transition from the role of president, I do so with a heart full of gratitude for the trust you have placed in me and the tireless efforts of the SIU Foundation board and staff. Each accomplishment we have achieved is a testament to the synergy that emerges when a passionate community rallies behind a common goal. I have no doubt that the foundation we have laid will serve as a sturdy platform for future accomplishments. The momentum we have generated is palpable, and I am confident that the SIU Foundation will continue to flourish under the esteemed leadership of Diane Compardo. I extend my deepest thanks to every individual who has contributed to our shared success. Let us move forward with the knowledge that our actions today shape a brighter tomorrow for Southern Illinois University and its cherished community. With Saluki pride,
Matt Solverson President, SIU Foundation Board

SIU FOUNDATION BRINGS IN RECORD NUMBER OF GIFTS, AWARDS RECORD NUMBER OF SCHOLARSHIPS
T
he SIU Foundation received a record-breaking number of gifts in FY23, leading to the organization’s second-best fundraising year.
Through 38,621 gifts, the Foundation raised over $31.2 million. It also awarded a record number of scholarships (1,645) and total scholarship dollars ($4,931,584) to students. More than 14 percent of all SIU students received an SIU Foundation scholarship in FY23. In the last two years, the SIU Foundation has raised nearly $64 million, which is, by far, the most the organization has raised over a two-year period. Since the beginning of the Forever SIU campaign, the Foundation has raised more than $287 million toward its $500 million goal. “We have received incredible support from our donors,” said Matt Kupec, vice chancellor for development and alumni relations and SIU Foundation CEO. “There has a been a wave of momentum leading us to these heights, and that momentum is continuing today.” Championed by Chancellor Austin Lane and his leadership team, the Forever SIU campaign aligns with the pillars of the Imagine 2030 strategic plan – student engagement and success, diversity, equity, and inclusion, branding and partnerships, research and innovation, and sustainability. 4

“As we continue to move forward with the campaign, we are going to see even greater synergy with the bold strategic plan set forth by Chancellor Lane,” Kupec said. “With continued support from our alumni and friends, we know the best days are still ahead.” The SIU Foundation’s outreach efforts connect with alumni and donors in Southern Illinois and across the country. The SIU Day of Giving received support from more people than ever. This year’s Day of Giving brought in more than $4 million from 3,702 gifts. The Foundation hosted Saluki Takeover Tours in Chicago, St. Louis, Nashville, Tennessee, and the Florida Gulf Coast. During these events, alumni meet with university leaders, gather with friends, and rekindle connections. Recently, Southern Illinois and Springfield have been added to the takeover tour schedule. In April, the Foundation hosted the inaugural Saluki Ball at the Marriott Marquis in Chicago. The event was attended by 615 people and raised more than $600,000 in funds that bridge the gap for students who need assistance completing their education at SIU. “From the Day of Giving to the Takeover Tours to the Saluki Ball, we have seen the greatest groundswell of alumni support in the history of this university,” Kupec said. “Honestly, it has been inspiring, and we’re excited to see what’s next.”

SIU DAY OF GIVING: MORE THAN 3,700 DONORS GIVE OVER $4M
T
he 2023 SIU Day of Giving reached new heights raising $4,037,918 in 24 hours.
The funds will enhance scholarship opportunities, support faculty, purchase equipment, and much more. There were 3,702 individual donations made from donors in 45 states. The total raised and amount of donations are both new SIU Day of Giving records. “The Day of Giving continues to be a marquee event on campus,” said Matt Kupec, vice chancellor for development and alumni relations and CEO of the SIU Foundation. “Each year, the excitement builds, and Saluki Nation shows what it can accomplish when everyone comes together.” Areas of campus with the highest dollar total raised were: • College of Business and Analytics, more than $819,000 • School of Medicine, more than $652,000 • College of Liberal Arts, more than $488,000 • College of Engineering, Computing, Technology, and Mathematics, more than $156,000 • Touch of Nature, more than $123,000
Hundreds of alumni, largely connected to the Carbondale in the ’80s and ’90s Facebook group, donated to the Balancing Education, Experience, and Reality (B.E.E.R.) Scholarship. That group raised more than $50,000 – enough to endow two more B.E.E.R. scholarships – and led the way with 837 total gifts. Other groups with the largest individual gift totals were: • WSIU Public Broadcasting, 765 • Saluki Athletics, 299 • School of Medicine, 260 • College of Engineering, Computing, Technology, and Mathematics, 250
“These incredible numbers tell the story,” Kupec said. “Our alumni and friends see the value of this university. Their support drives us forward and inspires the next generation of Salukis.”
GOING LIVE For the third consecutive year, the SIU Day of Giving featured a live broadcast from the WSIU studio. Streamed on multiple platforms and hosted by Kupec, the broadcast featured Chancellor Austin Lane, the dean of every college and school, multiple members of the faculty and staff, and students. “It’s turned out to be a day of excellence,” Chancellor Lane said during his live segment. “To showcase all of the departments, and for people to be able to see exactly where their dollars are going, it’s a great day.” The live broadcast began out of necessity in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, and because of the tremendous success of the event, the SIU Foundation has continued the tradition. It ended near 2:30 p.m. with an address from Chancellor Lane at Morris Library.
SEVEN YEARS OF SUCCESS Beginning in 2017, the SIU Day of Giving has become a tremendous day of alumni and donor activities. Growing each year in both amount raised and participation rates, campus was aflutter with activity this year. Morris Library hosted a “Dunk the Dean” event, which allowed donors to make a small gift on their phones and attempt to dunk Dean of Library Affairs John Pollitz and others into a dunk tank. The School of Law hosted a food truck and celebrated its 50th anniversary. Numerous other groups set up tables and encouraged giving throughout the day.

SALUKI BALL BRIDGES THE GAP FOR STUDENTS
T
here’s a new premier fundraiser on the SIU calendar – the Saluki Ball.
Hosted by Chancellor Austin Lane and Mrs. Loren Lane, the inaugural Saluki Ball brought 615 SIU alumni and friends together to raise funds that bridge the financial gap for students. Together, they donated more than $600,000 to that cause. “Our focus tonight is on our students, especially those who need your help the most,” said Chancellor Lane during the ball, which was held Saturday, April 22, at the Marriott Marquis Chicago. “Increasing our enrollment to 15,000 students by 2030 – as established by our strategic plan – requires not only efforts in recruitment but also retention. We must ensure the students that we bring to Carbondale or who enroll in online courses are able to stay enrolled and finish with their degree.” The Saluki Ball was sponsored by the Honorable Glenn and Mrs. Jo Poshard and ULLICO, Inc., and Laborers’ Local 773. Each donated $100,000 in support of the fundraiser. The event was emceed by SIU alumnus and ESPN radio host Marc Silverman. “SIU is the crown jewel of Southern Illinois. It’s the economic engine of this region, and we are committed to SIU,” said Ed Smith, president and CEO of ULLICO. “SIU has one of the most diverse, unionized workforces in America.” Many of SIU’s most resolute supporters bought tickets and sponsored tables in support of SIU students. The money raised will help enhance funding for students who require assistance with their bursar bills to stay enrolled. “Across the country, students are being forced to take time off school, and then are unable to finish,” Dr. Poshard said. “The funds raised during the Saluki Ball will enable them to finish on time. This kind of commitment to our students builds the reputation of our university.” 6

Drs. Philip and Pamela Pfeffer were honored with the Saluki Lifetime Achievement Award. Pam Pfeffer began serving on the SIU Foundation Board in 1995 and has served two terms as board president. A Metropolis native, she earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from SIU Carbondale in 1967. She is also a mentor with the Women’s Leadership Council. Phil Pfeffer is a two-degree SIU Carbondale graduate, earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and chemistry in 1965 and a master’s degree in economics in 1966. He received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 1997, the SIU Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998, and Alumni Achievement Award in 1992. The Pfeffers are life members of the SIU Alumni Association, the Paul and Virginia Society, and both have served on boards for the Alumni Association, SIU Foundation, and College of Liberal Arts. They have also been awarded the university’s Distinguished Service Award. Two students, Luis Barrera and BriYanna Robinson, were recognized with Saluki Success Awards. “Pam and Phil Pfeffer, BriYanna Robinson, and Luis Barrera are great examples of what a Saluki can and should be,” Silverman said. The night was capped by a performance by R&B legend Brian McKnight and dancing.

he inaugural Saluki Women’s Weekend celebrated the empowerment and continued advancement of women in education, athletics, and philanthropy.
Hosted by the SIU Foundation Women’s Leadership Council and Saluki Athletics, the two-day affair featured multiple events and many of SIU’s most inspiring women. Starting on Friday, Sept. 9, 2022, with the Women in Philanthropy Luncheon at the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center, nearly 100 women gathered for an afternoon of engaging events. The Women’s Leadership Council is a network of alumnae, parents, and friends who are committed to creating a culture of women-driven philanthropy at SIU and mentoring future generations of Salukis. “Our mission is to build a powerful and diverse network of female philanthropists to support mentorships, scholarships, and genderfocused grants campuswide,” said Loren Lane, wife of Chancellor Austin Lane, in a video address at the beginning of the luncheon. Among the opening speakers was Diane Compardo, whose employer, Moneta Group, presented the luncheon. “We have underestimated the power of our philanthropic capital,” said Compardo, who is a member of the WLC board. “It’s not just about money. We must share our voices, talents, time, and wisdom.”
T H E P OW E R O F T I T L E I X The weekend’s events partially centered around the 50th anniversary of Title IX. Enacted as part of the Education Amendments of 1972, Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or other educational program that receives federal funding. Dr. West retired as SIU’s associate athletics director in 1998 after serving 42 years as a faculty member, coach, and administrator. The Saluki Hall of Famer is considered a pioneer of Title IX, which she exemplified during her time with Saluki Athletics. Marsha Ryan, MD/JD, and Lolita Mack were also honored. Melissa Hahn, a WLC board member, led participants in the hour-long session. “It was a great workout and a nice way to meet new people,” said Dr. Kelly Higgins, who is also a WLC board member, after the session. Later Saturday morning, Dawn Korte kicked off the Mentorship Brunch at Dunn-Richmond Center. The Mentorship Program was established by the WLC as a priority to facilitate the connection of students with successful women mentors. Its priorities include aligning classroom learning with real-life experiences, developing leadership skills, providing networking, and creating lifelong ties to each other and SIU. Korte, who serves on the WLC board and hosted the event along with fellow board members Dr. Ryan and Julie Staley, said the initial goal was to have eight mentees for the year, but they are mentoring 17 young Saluki women. “Every time I talk to one of my mentees, I learn something new,” Korte said. “I also get a deeper appreciation for the value they have to offer. It provides us with an opportunity to reflect on progress we have made in our careers, polish our leadership skills, and create authentic relationships that we would not otherwise have.” Tammera L. Holmes, CEO of Aerostar Aviation attended the event. A 2000 graduate of SIU’s School of Aviation, Holmes said the Saluki Women’s Weekend provides a refreshing way to look at the progress SIU has made in gender equity. “Seeing so many accomplished women come together is inspiring,” she said. “One of my professional goals is to create resources for my aviation program, and this weekend I have connected to so many people and have come away with valuable information and ideas.” Other hosts for various events were SIU Credit Union, HireLevel, First Mid Bank & Trust, Walker’s Bluff, Walmart Marion Supercenter #216, Rendleman Orchards, Marion Sam’s Club No. 8180, and Panera Bread in Carbondale. SALUKIS TAKE OVER CHICAGO, NASHVILLE, FLORIDA, ST. LOUIS
A
n early initiative during Chancellor Austin Lane’s tenure at SIU was his Listening & Learning Tours. During those sessions, one of the things alumni pointed out was that they wanted to interact more often with campus officials and students. Born out of that sentiment was the Saluki Takeover Tour, which brings the campus to areas around the country and connects alumni to leadership. During FY23, the SIU Foundation hosted events in Chicago, Nashville, Florida, and St. Louis.
C H I C AG O The kickoff event was the Chancellor’s Reception on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, at the Chicago Firehouse Restaurant. Chancellor Lane touted the impact of the Imagine 2030 strategic plan and encouraging enrollment trends. “There’s a lot of history of Salukis in Chicago,” said Chancellor Lane. “Our goal is to have 15,000 students by 2030, and Chicago is going to play a major role in that plan.” Chicago Fire Department Capt. Ronald Regan Jr. was honored with a posthumous bachelor’s degree in public safety management during a ceremony the morning of Friday, Sept. 16, at the Chicago Fire Academy.
The university signed agreements with Prairie State College and the College of DuPage, making it easier for students from those schools to enroll at SIU. There were also visits to multiple high schools, which included three schools involved in the Hope Chicago program, which provides opportunities for students from underserved communities. The SIU Alumni Association and members of the Carbondale in the ‘80s and ‘90s Facebook group hosted an event on the Chicago Riverwalk at Tiny Tapp & Café. The beer of choice, Salukitoberfest, was brewed by students in SIU’s Fermentation Science Institute through its partnership with Ravinia Brewing Co. Later Friday evening, dozens of alumni and friends gathered at the Promontory Fieldhouse for the Dunbar Leadership Society reception. The society sought to raise scholarship funds and host events that resonated with members of a multicultural campus. Hundreds of Salukis made the trip even farther upstate to Evanston to take part in the Alumni Association tailgate before Saluki Football’s historic win against Northwestern.
Regan passed away Dec. 19, 2021, at the age of 58 after a bout with COVID-19. He was just one semester away from earning his degree.
“We had such a great crowd. It was a great weekend in Chicago for the takeover tour,” said Jeff Gleim, executive director of the Alumni Association. “We couldn’t be any happier with the turnout for all of the events.”
“Ron was not just a firefighter or captain, he was a friend,” Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt said. “He did so much for everybody else. He never thought about himself.”

Later that afternoon, a sold-out crowd filled the dining room at the Residence Inn in downtown Chicago for the Anti-racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion luncheon. Dr. Paul Frazier, vice chancellor for anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion, honored 10 SIU alumni with Ascension Awards, which recognize alumni who have demonstrated a commitment to leadership and service at SIU. “We’re honoring these incredible Salukis for their contributions to SIU and society,” he said. The awardees were Eric Alvarez, Robert Beverly, Andrea Brookins, Juana Duran Charicata, Pervis Conway, Carlos Hernandez, Beth Mueller, Freddie Taylor, Jr., Everett Rand, and Timothy Rand. Chancellor Lane, President Dan Mahony, Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management Wendell Williams, and other SIU Admissions representatives visited multiple high schools and community colleges. 8

On Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, the SIU Alumni Association hosted an event at Bakersfield, a restaurant in downtown Nashville. Alumni gathered to share stories and enjoy light appetizers and drinks. The keystone event for the Saluki Takeover Tour in Nashville was the Chancellor’s Reception at Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint on Sunday, Jan. 22. More than 60 alumni and friends enjoyed food and drinks as they celebrated Saluki spirit and prepared for the women’s basketball game that afternoon. “We’re rolling out the red carpet for our alumni,” Chancellor Lane said. “That’s what this is all about, connecting with Salukis all over the place.” The group was joined by many university leaders and a guest appearance by Saluki Women’s Basketball coach Kelly Bond-White. Chancellor Lane emphasized the importance SIU alumni play in the university’s goal of raising enrollment and fulfilling the goals of the Imagine 2030 strategic plan.
More than 275 Salukis gathered at Schlafly Tap Room during the Saluki Takeover Tour in St. Louis in March.
F LO R I DA Representatives from SIU gathered with alumni and friends down the Gulf Coast of Florida during the Saluki Takeover Tour in the Sunshine State. “It’s so refreshing to see so many Salukis,” Chancellor Lane said. “You, the alumni, are serving as our ambassadors. Salukis are everywhere. Our goal as we connect, and sometimes reconnect, is to further ignite Saluki Nation.” Things kicked off Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023, with dozens of Salukis coming together at the Savannah Recreation facility in The Villages. With its ever-growing population, The Villages is home to several Saluki alumni, who were excited to meet with campus leaders. From there, the takeover tour headed south to Tampa on Thursday, Feb. 16, for a luncheon at Seasons 52 restaurant. Again, dozens of Salukis filled the room with maroon and white as they celebrated their school spirit. The final event took place Friday, Feb. 17, at the Naples Yacht Club. More than 100 Salukis joined the fun as the takeover tour wrapped up. “We want our students to imagine what they can become and realize they can do it if they start at SIU,” Chancellor Lane said.
The Saluki Takeover Tour in St. Louis featured two gatherings earlier in the week. One was a social for College of Business and Analytics alumni at Ballpark Village, and the SIU Alumni Association’s Young Alumni Group was hosting a similar event at Schlafly Tap Room. “The Dawgs are in the house,” said Marc Morris, interim dean of COBA. “We’re going to be in St. Louis every year.” The SIU Foundation and its corporate division also hosted a Corporate Networking Breakfast at Mid-America Transplant – The Family House. Chancellor Lane led the conversation, discussing how companies could best interact with SIU and produce a pipeline that connects businesses to SIU graduates. Later, Saluki alumni and friends gathered at the Crown Room in Ballpark Village for a pre-game event before the men’s basketball team took on Missouri State at the MVC tournament. Joined by the Saluki Spirit Teams, Marching Salukis, and Grey Dawg, revelers sent the Salukis off in style. The Dawgs defeated Missouri State, 54-51, in a heart-pounding quarterfinal game. After another send-off event on Saturday, this time at PBR St. Louis, the Salukis fell to Drake, 65-52, in the tournament’s semifinals.

Through scholarships, SIU was also able to make Greer’s life a little bit easier when facing a financial crunch. She received the Fred W. Samson Scholarship, which paid the final $4,800 of her balance.
After graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor’s in psychology in Fall 2022, she is continuing her education this spring while pursuing a master’s degree in counseling and rehabilitation. She plans to become a licensed therapist.
Such incredible support has also inspired her to think about how she can help future generations of Salukis.
ierra Greer is building a bright future for herself and her young son.
“Being that I’m a first-generation student, I want him to follow in my footsteps and know that if Mommy can do it, so can he,” she said.
“This scholarship has allowed me to start the next phase of my educational journey,” she said. “It has also allowed me to remove the stress of financial burdens and focus on my academics even more.”
“My passion to help others and see them become the best version of themselves is what sparked my interest in psychology,” she said. “Also, with the heavy burden of mental health issues, I want to be part of effective solutions for the youth.”
“I would like to create a scholarship for single mothers like me who are going to school and succeeding while overcoming obstacles,” she said. “Students are the future, and many of us want to be positive change for the future. Sometimes all we need is a helping hand to make it through. Donor support can change someone’s life forever.”
Greer didn’t have many options when planning for college, but SIU opened the door for her.
Greer encourages every prospective student to give SIU strong consideration.
“I chose SIU because SIU chose me,” she said. “When all other schools wouldn’t give me a chance, SIU did, and I have been a 3.8-GPA star student ever since.”
“SIU is here to support you along the way,” she said. “Whatever your goals are there is a group of people at SIU waiting to help you accomplish them.”

You can’t have a modern business school without a supply chain program.”
Brothers create scholarship to honor father, support international students For years, brothers Samir and Sahir Khan’s only connection to SIU was the stories their parents shared about Carbondale and the university where they met.
Hodges plans a bright future for SIU students Allan Hodges’ substantial estate gift will establish the Allan A. Hodges Graduate Scholarship in the School of Earth Systems and Sustainability Endowment Fund.
“Our family started at SIU,” said Dr. Samir Khan. “It was always a bit of a mythical place.”
Hodges has taken notice of fundraising efforts that have exemplified how many people have been impacted by SIU.
When their father, Chowdhry Rafiq Khan, passed away in February 2023, they decided to honor his legacy with a $50,000 donation to establish the C. Rafiq Khan Scholarship, which will benefit an international student in SIU’s School of Analytics, Finance, and Economics.
“On the Day of Giving, SIU had more than 3,700 donors raising over $4 million. That’s impressive,” he said. “Then there was more than $600,000 raised in one night in Chicago at the Saluki Ball. Larger schools don’t see that level of support. I believe in the mission of the university.”

Family honors father’s legacy with accounting scholarship Janice Kelly and her daughters, Pamela Hyde and Patricia Kelly, knew they wanted to honor their husband and father’s legacy. Douglas Kelly graduated from SIU with a bachelor’s in accounting in 1957. He was one of the university’s first Black accounting students. The family donated $50,000 to establish the Douglas E. Kelly Memorial Scholarship to support African American students who are studying accounting at SIU. “The education my father received at SIU was the foundation of many of the opportunities my sister and I have been able to take advantage of,” Hyde said.
Michaels donates $25K to COBA, naming Rehn Hall classroom
Ajala: Scholarship donations make SIU students’ dreams come true
Harvey Michaels knew SIU was the perfect place for him to attend. Now, he has decided it’s the perfect place to leave a legacy.
Mercy Ajala graduated from SIU’s School of Aviation Management in May 2023, and she will forever be thankful for the donor support that helped her along the way.
“Southern Illinois was the best place for me,” he said. “The size of the classroom is conducive to being a part of the class and not feeling lost in the crowd. It’s why I was interested in naming a classroom.” With a $25,000 gift to the College of Business and Analytics Technology Improvement Fund, Michaels did just that. His generosity will be honored with his name on a classroom in Rehn Hall.
“My family and I moved to the U.S. from Lagos, Nigeria, in pursuit of education,” she said. “I’m the first in my family to graduate college. With your donations, you help other students like me achieve their dreams.” The inaugural Saluki Ball raised funds that help bridge the gap for students and support SIU’s focus on keeping students enrolled. Robinson establishes scholarship for East St. Louis High School students
The George Bates Foundation continues tradition of philanthropy with $50K gift
Darius Robinson ’95 ’98 established an endowment at SIU for students graduating from East St. Louis High School. Robinson graduated from SIU with a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology and a master’s degree in manufacturing systems.
The College of Engineering, Computing, Technology, and Mathematics received $50,000 from a longtime supporter of the university.
Robinson said his father was a contributing factor in deciding to establish the scholarship. “My father, Johnnie Robinson, was a big giver in terms of leadership, discipline, and being a role model. What is remarkable about my dad is that he … gave many hours to bridge the gap for so many young people,” Robinson said.
Dr. Mike Murray, trustee of the George A. Bates Memorial Foundation, presented Dean Xiaoqing “Frank” Liu with a check to go toward the George A. Bates Memorial Scholarship. “Dr. Murray and the George Bates Memorial Foundation have been great supporters of our college,” Dean Liu said. “These scholarships are important to our college, and we are deeply grateful to the Bates Foundation for its history of partnering with SIU.”
Pre-med student emphasizes the importance of scholarships Being from Georgia, Suhas Dantuluri hadn’t considered SIU as a college option until he did some research about the university’s School of Medicine. “I found out that SIUC placed a deep value on rural health care, which is something I place a deep value on as well,” he said. “Being able to come here and not worrying about keeping the lights on and being able to focus on keeping my grades up and making an impact is exceptionally valuable.” The inaugural Saluki Ball raised funds that help bridge the gap for students and support SIU’s focus on keeping students enrolled.

Paul & Virginia Society gets inside look at automotive, aviation programs Members of the Paul & Virginia Society gathered in May, for a tour of the Glenn Poshard Transportation Education Center. The Paul & Virginia Society, which is named for the Paul & Virginia statue that stands in front of the Stone Center, recognizes individuals who have included the SIU Foundation in their will or have made a planned gift to the institution. “So many people were involved in bringing this building to fruition,” said Dr. Glenn Poshard. “It’s the grandest building we have on campus today.” 12

Gift further strengthens alumna’s dedication to service, education
Legence Bank donates $5K to the Saluki Food Pantry
Ruth-Marie Frances Chambers has excelled in a diverse range of careers and avocations, and a common theme is her commitment to fostering educational opportunities.
During the 2023 SIU Day of Giving, Legence Bank donated $5,000 to the Saluki Food Pantry.
Chambers’ commitment was demonstrated when she established the Ruth-Marie Frances Chambers Endowed Scholarship through a $100,000 planned gift. “The diversification of prospective students within the campus community who require affordable access to educational and financial support to enhance their collegiate experience is a challenge for many educational institutions,” she said.
“This gift from Legence Bank makes an enormous impact,” said Tena Bennett, assistant vice chancellor for auxiliary enterprise and student affairs. “As a result, our students can come here and focus on the most important things – their education, growth, and wellbeing – instead of worrying about where their next meal will come from.” Legence Bank’s gift was set up as a match, so that they could inspire others to give to the food pantry. In total, nearly $8,000 was raised.

EXPENDITURES
The SIU Foundation accepts contributions in the form of cash, securities and real estate or personal property. Many corporations will match the contribution of employees, officers, directors and, in some instances, spouses and retirees. The SIU Foundation also accepts various types of planned gifts, whereby the donor makes a gift commitment during his or her lifetime that will benefit the university. Planned gifts are in the form of bequests, gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and life agreements.
Donors can designate their contributions for items such as scholarships, faculty support, research, facilities and equipment. Donors also contribute toward general support with an unrestricted gift. The SIU Foundation’s expenditures are represented as follows, with “other” including professional development and travel, equipment and expendable goods:

M I S S I O N S TAT E M E N T The Southern Illinois University Foundation was established in 1942 to solicit, receive, hold and administer gifts from private sources for educational purposes. The SIU Foundation provides alumni and other friends as a means to invest in the future of their university. The foundation is an independent, non-profit corporation, which exists solely to further the mission of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. It is a designated 501(c)3 organization with appropriate approval from the Internal Revenue Service to issue tax deductible receipts for private gifts received to support SIU. The mission of the SIU Foundation is to maximize private support for SIU to assist the university in achieving its long-range goals. As outlined in the Strategic Plan, the activities, programs and efforts of the foundation for the next two years will be driven by five priority areas. These areas are developing next wave fundraising programs, fostering and improving relationships with key constituency groups, recruiting and retaining strong high-capability staff, creating comprehensive marketing and communication strategies and implementing board governance and leadership structures. Throughout the coming years, the foundation will continue to raise money with the help of others, praise our quality board and staff and tell our story.
