From the President At the end of my final year as president of the SIU Foundation Board of Directors, I sit in awe of my fellow Salukis. Through your generosity, we accomplished amazing feats. We had the second-best year in the history of the SIU Foundation, raising more than $25 million. We had the best Day of Giving in the event’s five-year history, raising more than $2.8 million in one day. We watched as the Forever SIU campaign eclipsed the $130 million mark. I have no doubt that through your continued support and the tremendous leadership of incoming president Matt Solverson, the SIU Foundation will charge confidently toward the Forever SIU goal of raising $200 million by June 2024. It has been my pleasure to serve as president of the SIU Foundation Board, and there are too many people to thank for their support. Just know that I’m appreciative of each and every one of you. The strength of the SIU Foundation goes well beyond its board and its employees. Its strength is found in you, the donor. By supporting the university, not only are you easing the financial burdens of our students and enhancing their experiences while on campus, but you are setting the standard for what it means to be a Saluki. It is a blessing to watch the Saluki spirit in action. Never before has it been more clearly on display than during the pandemic. Our students needed help, and you helped them. Our university needed support, and you supported it. SIU is at its strongest when its alumni and donors are engaged. This year’s annual report reflects that spirit. Let these stories of success inspire you. They are connected by one common theme – the impact of philanthropy. Salukis are driven. SIU Foundation elects new board members in Fiscal Year 2021 Three alumni of Southern Illinois University have joined the SIU Foundation Board of Directors. They are serving three-year terms that will conclude June 30, 2023. The board governs the SIU Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization that provides alumni and friends a means to invest in the university. Established in 1942, the foundation solicits and administers gifts from private sources in support of SIU Carbondale’s academic mission. Private funding is generated through annual giving, planned giving, major giving, corporate and foundation relations, and campaigns. Kevin Bame earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1979 and a Master of Business Administration in 2002 from SIU Carbondale. He is a licensed certified public accountant. Kevin started his professional career in public accounting. In 1986, he began his employment with SIU and held several administrative positions with the university during his 31-year tenure. In 2003, he received the Outstanding University Administrative Professional Award. Kevin retired from SIU in 2017 as the vice chancellor for administration and finance.

Kevin serves as a board member for several not-for-profit organizations and his local school district. He lives in Murphysboro with his wife, Lyn. They have two children and four grandchildren. Kevin and Lyn are lifetime members of the SIU Alumni Association and support Saluki Athletics.

Dawn Korte, Ph.D., supports the SAP SuccessFactors North American HR Cloud Sales team, working directly with senior leadership and both current and prospective customers. With over 25 years of expertise in operations, finance, and human resources in multiple industries, Dawn is a trusted advisor that achieves strategic goals and results by connecting people, processes, and technology to drive organizational transformation in a digital economy. Dawn is passionate about working at the intersection of strategy and people and has partnered in the design and implementation of several enterprise-wide HR transformations, including performance management, learning initiatives, talent development, and cultural transformation. Dawn Korte, Ph.D.

Before joining SAP Success Factors, Dawn fulfilled her dream of owning her own consulting business. She shared her aptitude for turnaround initiatives and extraordinary energy with midsized to large businesses to create net income and drive cultural transformation, specifically utilizing technology to drive value, and produce results. At SSM Health, a large Catholic health system in the Midwest, Dawn was the system vice president of innovation, learning and HR, where she was responsible for the creation of leadership development, strategic human capital management, performance development, succession planning, process improvement, and innovation for the entire system. She has also held numerous senior leadership positions in both operations and finance in health care, and successfully transformed numerous non-clinical departments through talent management strategies, thus increasing employee engagement and retention. Her early career was in financial and operational leadership roles at BJC HealthCare. She has also served as CFO for a family business.

Additionally, Dawn has a broad academic and learning background with over 25 years of instruction on a university level. Most notably, she served as an adjunct assistant professor at Saint Louis University in the College of Public Health and Social Justice in the Master of Health Administration program, which is nationally recognized. Dawn received a Ph.D. from Saint Louis University, an MBA from Lindenwood University, and a BS from Southern Illinois University. Dawn holds both SPHR and SHRM – SCP certifications. She lives in Trenton, Illinois, with her husband, Dan, and enjoys playing the piano, all types of exercise, and remains fearless in the kitchen and classroom.

After a career in the automotive business that spanned five decades, Neil Swartz retired from Toyota Motor North America in 2020. He last served as a Vice President responsible for Toyota’s parts and accessories supply chain operations in North America. In this role, Neil was responsible for the parts and accessories logistics that supports the Toyota and Lexus dealer network and manufacturing plants across North America as well as many export markets around the world. He oversaw 16 North American facilities and nearly 2,000 team members in areas such as supply, inventory management, warehouse operations, and transportation. Neil Swartz

Always a car guy growing up near Chicago, Neil loved working on cars and motorcycles even before he could drive. He chose SIU because of its outstanding automotive program and earned an AAS in Automotive Technology in 1976. Neil knew that to achieve his dreams he needed a baccalaureate degree in management and earned that from SIU in 1978. Neil began his automotive journey with what was American Motors Corporation first in Cincinnati and then Detroit before joining Toyota in 1985. Over Neil’s career, he held management and eventually executive roles in several areas at Toyota where he was always able to draw upon his education, especially his automotive studies at SIU. He joined Toyota as a service marketing manager. As his career grew, he has held several service and parts positions including national dealer development manager and national sales and field operations manager. He even headed a joint venture aftermarket parts start-up for Toyota. Outside of service and parts, Neil held executive roles in corporate strategic planning and administrative services. Neil has never forgotten SIU. He held the position of co-chairperson of the SIU Automotive Advisory Board from 1992 to 2010 and was named “Outstanding Alumni” in 2006. Neil established an endowed scholarship for women and minorities pursuing an automotive education at SIU. Prior to his relocation to Texas in 2017, he served as a board member for the South Bay YMCA and Golden West College, in Huntington Beach, California. Neil Swartz currently resides in Frisco, Texas, with his wife, Karen, where he enjoys playing golf and, of course, working on his classic car collection.

SUPPORT FOR SIU AS STRONG AS EVER Forever SIU campaign rolls past the $130M mark

I

n a year filled with challenges, the SIU Foundation and its supporters accomplished incredible things as part of the ongoing Forever SIU fundraising campaign.

During FY21, the SIU Foundation raised more than $25 million, which was just short of the record-setting $28 million raised in FY20. The campaign finished FY21 at just more than $130.5 million. “Because of the generosity of our alumni and donors, we had our second-best fundraising year ever,” said Matt Kupec, CEO of the SIU Foundation. “The pandemic made things difficult for everyone, but it didn’t dampen the Saluki spirit. If anything, it strengthened it.” The Forever SIU campaign was launched in 2017 with a goal of raising $75 million in three years. The Foundation sped past that goal seven months early, which prompted the decision to set a new goal of $90 million. “At the end of 2019, we had already surpassed that new goal, and we knew it was important to keep this momentum,” Kupec said. “That’s when we set our sights on $200 million by June 2024. We’re well on our way to reaching that goal.”

SIU DAY OF GIVING Despite the obstacles posed by the pandemic, the Foundation had its most successful SIU Day of Giving to date. In the fifth year of the daylong celebration, more than 3,400 supporters donated more than $2.8 million. “The Day of Giving has become a major event on campus,” Kupec said. “In 2021, we were forced to adapt, and our alumni and donors responded. With the help of WSIU, we presented an 8-hour livestream event that featured nearly every college and department. The Day of Giving highlights everything that’s great about SIU.” The 2022 SIU Day of Giving will be Wednesday, March 2.

SALUKIS FOREVER Few areas of campus were as directly affected by COVID-19 as Saluki Athletics. In a year with minimal fans in the stands and the increased cost of testing players and coaches, the challenges were many. In conjunction with Forever SIU, the SIU Foundation launched the $25 million Salukis Forever fundraising campaign. Coupled with appropriate cost-cutting and increased revenues from other revenue sources, the money raised through the campaign will provide sustainable funding to drive Saluki Athletics forward. “It was a great year for the Dawgs on the field and in the classroom,” Kupec said. “Our football team had a deep playoff run. We saw Salukis qualify for the Olympics. Our softball and baseball teams had historic seasons. The women’s basketball team had the eighth-best GPA in the country. Donor support through Salukis Forever is a key component to continuing this success.”

LOOKING AHEAD The impact of the Forever SIU campaign has been transformative. It has allowed the university to add scholarships, enhance research opportunities, improve facilities and equipment, and more. “Our goal at the Foundation is to make this great institution even better, and this campaign is exactly how we do that,” Kupec said. “We’ve had tremendous success thus far, but we’re far from done. We appreciate every single alumni and donor. The impact your generosity can have on SIU is incredible.” As the university focuses on increasing enrollment, the need for funding is great. Students are looking for financial support through scholarships and universities that offer state-of-the-art technology and facilities. “The money raised through the Forever SIU campaign directly supports the effort to increase enrollment,” Kupec said. “The financial help provides critical funds for recruitment and retention, plus students see that our alumni are excited and engaged.” With three years left in the campaign, the best may be yet to come.

THE HIGHLIGHTS Whether supporting a college, program, or specific scholarship, donors were able to choose from several initiatives. The Balancing Education, Experience & Reality Scholarship received more than 900 individual gifts, which totaled more than $65,000. That was enough to endow two more B.E.E.R Scholarships. The idea for the scholarship was born out of the Carbondale in the ’80s and ’90s Facebook group before the 2019 Day of Giving. Through the generosity of Day of Giving donors, there will now be six endowed B.E.E.R Scholarships.

SIU DAY OF GIVING RAISES OVER $2.8 MILLION

M

ore than $2.8 million was raised on March 3 during the 2021 SIU Day of Giving, shattering last year’s record.

“It was an incredible day to be a Saluki,” said Matt Kupec, CEO of the SIU Foundation. “Our alumni and donors take a lot of pride in supporting this university, and the Day of Giving puts their dedication on display.” There were more than 3,400 individual gifts made during the 24-hour period between Wednesday and Thursday. This, too, far outpaced totals from previous giving days. Donations were made in 50 states and 11 countries. “The sheer number of people who decided to log on and make a gift is inspiring,” Kupec said. “All gifts, no matter how large, make an impact. Our students, faculty, and staff are thankful for every donor.”

The SIU School of Medicine earned the largest amount of total dollars, bringing in more than $373,000. The College of Liberal Arts came in a close second with more than $327,000; but the college was honored for receiving the highest average gift amount at more than $3,200 per donation. THE LIVESTREAM The Day of Giving went live on the SIU Alumni Association Facebook page and the Day of Giving website at 8 a.m. on March 3. For the next eight hours, viewers watched 22 segments and more than 100 videos. The livestream was broadcast from WSIU’s television studio, and staff from WSIU and the Foundation worked together to produce the daylong event. “WSIU was integral in making this a success,” Kupec said. “We knew we had to do something different because of COVID-19 restrictions, and a livestream made a lot of sense. We presented them with our plan, and their expertise elevated the entire day.” Chancellor Austin A. Lane was the featured guest during the afternoon section of the livestream. “Even in the midst of a pandemic, we’re still charging forward,” said Chancellor Lane during the livestream. “We’re not just surviving, but we’re thriving. That’s the Saluki spirit.” The 2022 SIU Day of Giving will be Wednesday, March 2, and plans are already in place for both virtual and in-person celebrations.

DUNBAR LEADERSHIP SOCIETY SUPPORTS DIVERSE STUDENTS, THOUGHTS

S

IU’s commitment to diversity is represented through the Dunbar Leadership Society.

Named after Paul Laurence Dunbar, a turn-of-the-century poet and novelist, the society was established in 1904 to organize the activities of African American students. It served as the precursor to the university’s Africana Studies program and the Black Affairs Council. Recently, through the SIU Foundation, the Dunbar Leadership Society has been reintroduced. “I see great potential at SIU. We’re just scratching the surface,” said society chair Kennard Tucker ’91. “Having engaged and involved alumni is crucial.” Through the Dunbar Leadership Society, Tucker hopes to reinvigorate SIU’s diverse alumni and create opportunities for current and future Salukis. It’s his plan to raise scholarship funds and host events that resonate with members of a multicultural campus. “As Black alumni, we want to create a society that is synonymous with the SIU we knew and loved and share that experience with the next generation of leaders,” he said. “There are important conversations happening around the country right now, and campus is a microcosm of what’s happening nationally. We hope to provide the construct so that dialogue can exist and thrive.”

The Dunbar Leadership Society was established in 1904, and through the SIU Foundation, has been reintroduced.

While there are mechanisms in place at the state and federal level to help low-income and minority students, the Dunbar Leadership Society seeks to fill some of the gaps.

“Diversity is important for students of all races and ethnicities,” said society board member Susan Smith Ross ’79. “For many, college is the first time you’re included with people who aren’t like you. A diverse campus is an opportunity for all students to gain respect and knowledge of others.”

“It’s important for students to have support services and social opportunities. There needs to be that balance,” said society board member Dr. Carl Flowers ’75, MS ’85, Ph.D. ’93. “The Dunbar Leadership Society can lead to more access for student who fall in the middle.” Beginning a college career can be a difficult time for any student, but that can be especially true for students who feel like they don’t belong. “SIU has been good to my family, but when I started, I was the only Black student in many of my classes,” said society board member Dr. Linda Flowers ’78, MS ’88, Ph.D. ’06. “It’s important for students to see people who look like themselves.”

Having a diverse campus goes beyond the vital step of ensuring equality for Black students, it provides a richer, more fulfilling experience for every member of the campus community.

With the assistance of the SIU Foundation, the Dunbar Leadership Society hopes to raise enough money to endow scholarships, host speaker series, and support diversity initiative. Gifts of any size are welcome and can be made at siuf.org. “We want to galvanize the alumni base and create a source of pride for all alumni,” Tucker said. “The program was created to promote and encourage African American philanthropic giving at the leadership level of $1,000 or greater. Our plan is to support significant scholarship funds and implement important programming. The opportunities are nearly unlimited.”

SIU FOUNDATION PROVIDES FERMENTATION SCIENCE INSTITUTE FUNDING GRANT WILL ADVANCE RESEARCH, PAR TNERSHIPS

T

he integration of research and innovation into the educational mission of SIU is a major goal of the university, and the Fermentation Science Institute (FSI) located in the McLafferty Annex exemplifies this focus. The FSI provides an umbrella for the support and development of programs (educational, research, and outreach) involving all aspects of fermentation science and serves as a support structure to spur and foster regional industries involving fermentation. In its role as an accelerator, the SIU Foundation is committed to advance the efforts of the FSI and has agreed to provide a grant of $1.1 million to allow for further development of the infrastructure within the McLafferty Annex. This new infrastructure will accelerate the expansion of the activities of the FSI into important new and exciting areas. “There is groundbreaking research and student development happening within the walls of the McLafferty Annex,” said Matt Kupec, CEO of the SIU Foundation. “Our Board of Directors recognizes the opportunity and views this as a major step toward fulfilling the potential of the program.”

THE OPPORTUNITY As part of its planned expansion and in response to a request for information issued by SIU, Chicago-based Ravinia Brewing Company plans to locate a production facility within the McLafferty Annex. This lease will not only generate revenue to support the academic program, but also provide world-class training for students by allowing on-site access to large-scale production and packaging equipment not currently available in southern Illinois. In addition, Ravinia intends to provide contract brewing and packaging services to regional breweries, which will provide growth and economic development opportunities in southern Illinois. To advance the goals of the FSI and accommodate the brewery, as well as other facilities within the McLafferty Annex, the building needs critical infrastructure upgrades. The funding provided by the Foundation will allow the FSI to move forward to develop the facility to house the Faye Minor MaGill teaching kitchen and sensory laboratory, and pilot facilities for brewing, distilling, and cheesemaking. “Making these infrastructure upgrades to the building is the next important step to fully realizing the FSI program’s potential. We will soon have a vertically integrated hub of interdisciplinary research and training opportunities in the areas of fermentation and value-added agriculture,” said Matt McCarroll, director of the institute. “This facility will provide training opportunities for SIU students and support new businesses across the region and state. This project will enhance the FSI’s curriculum and put SIU in a position to become a national leader in the field.”

THE IMPACT This project uniquely positions SIU as a leader in the growing field of fermentation science. Businesses have already taken interest in partnering with the FSI and the infrastructure provided by this grant will serve as a catalyst stimulating more opportunities for partnerships and R&D engagements with the corporate world, resulting in significant revenue generation through leases, grants, and contracts. “Repurposing the McLafferty Annex presents a once-in-alifetime opportunity. Nestled between the University Farms and the heart of campus, the vertically integrated pilot facilities will provide state-of-the-art training and R&D opportunities in the production of fermented foods, beverages, and value-added agriculture not replicated elsewhere,” McCarroll said. “The support of the SIU Foundation comes at a critical time and fasttracks the university to seize these opportunities.”

SALUKI ATHLETICS LAUNCHES FOUR-YEAR GIVING CAMPAIGN

A

four-year, $25 million fundraising campaign will provide necessary funding to support the future of Southern Illinois University Athletics.

Salukis Forever was launched in February by Saluki Athletics and the SIU Foundation. The entities are working together to raise private funds to support the mission of the SIU Athletic Department. The new effort is part of the ongoing Forever SIU campaign, which the SIU Foundation launched in 2017 and extended in 2019. Like so many other aspects of daily life, Saluki Athletics was greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This campaign gives donors and alumni a chance to reconnect with the programs and studentathletes. “Whether it’s supporting scholarships, coaching staff, a specific sport or fund, or simply giving to Saluki Athletics in general, every dollar helps,” said SIU Foundation CEO Matt Kupec. “The Saluki spirit is the tie that binds generations of fans and alumni together. This is the opportunity to make a tremendous impact.” Donors will have the opportunity to support Saluki Athletics in general or a particular program. SIU has 13 individual programs, which bring hundreds of student-athletes to the university. “Our student-athletes are some of the best students on campus,” Kupec said. “Our teams have produced more than 100 Academic All-Americans and have GPAs that rank among the best in the country.” The on-the-field success is just as impressive. The Salukis have won eight national championships, dozens of conference titles and featured more than 60 Olympians. From Walt Frazier hoisting the 1967 NIT Championship trophy to hammer throwers DeAnna Price and Gwen Berry representing the U.S. in the Tokyo Olympics, SIU’s history is rich with tradition and success. “Saluki Athletics is the front door to SIU,” Kupec said. “Our teams spread awareness of our brand, which aids the university when recruiting potential students across the country. When the Salukis win, we all win.” Beyond giving directly to the Saluki Athletics or a particular sport, donors can support the Saluki Athletic Scholarship Fund, the AD Excellence Fund, the Women’s Initiative Fund, and the Salukis Well-Being Fund.

The 2020-21 athletics season added to that history with an incredible run of Saluki success: • The football team beat five nationally ranked teams, including ending North Dakota State’s 39-game winning streak, and culminating with a trip to the FCS semifinals. • SIU softball won its first 16 games – 37 in total – and represented the university in the NCAA Regional in Tempe, Arizona. Coach Kerri Blaylock set the record for the most wins in Saluki Athletics history.

Women continue to have a profound impact on Southern Illinois University

E

stablished in 2020, the Southern Illinois University Women’s Leadership Council is a network of alumnae, parents, and friends who are committed to creating a culture of women-driven philanthropy at SIU and mentoring future generations of Salukis. Council members contribute their time, energy, resources, and expertise serving on university boards and championing SIU in their home regions. Embodying a legacy of leadership, the council collectively funds women’s initiatives and scholarships on campus.

As an executive HR advisor for SAP, Dawn Korte works directly with senior leadership teams to facilitate organizational transformation through people, processes and technology. With over 25 years of expertise in operations, finance, and human resources in numerous industries, she has partnered in the design and implementation of several enterprise-wide talent and performance management programs, leadership development systems, HR technology, learning, and development curriculum, and culture initiatives. Dawn also served as faculty for 25 years on a university level, most notably as assistant adjunct professor at Saint Louis University in the College of Public Health and Social Justice. Dawn received a Ph.D. from Saint Louis University, an MBA from Lindenwood University, and a BS from Southern Illinois University. Dawn lives in Trenton, Illinois, with her husband, Dan Korte (SIU College of Engineering graduate). She is a fan of the musician Pitbull, a trained classical pianist, exercise junkie, and remains fearless in the kitchen and classroom.

Dr. Marsha Ryan earned her MD from the University of Oklahoma, and finished her residency at the University of MissouriColumbia. She practiced general and breast surgery in Carbondale, until her retirement in 2017. Dr. Ryan received her JD from the SIU School of Law in 1987. Dr. Ryan has held several medical staff appointments at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, serving as chairman of the department of surgery and chief of staff. She was the medical director of SIH’s Breast Center. In addition, Dr. Ryan served as president of the SIU Foundation Board and was the campaign chair for the Foundation’s $100 million Opportunity Through Excellence campaign. She is also a former member of the SIU Board of Trustees, serving from 2017 until 2019. Dr. Ryan has been very involved in the Carbondale arts community and has been the recipient of a variety of community and university awards. Marsha and her husband, John, live in Murphysboro, Illinois. They have two children, Jack and Kit, who are proud SIU alumni as well.

Julie Staley, MS Summa Cum Laude, SIUE in mass communications, and an honors student, BA from SIUC in radio-television, minoring in theatre, and was a radio-TV study abroad student in London, England. She’s the first mass communications student chosen for the University Symposium, and was the SIUC Radio-TV Student of the Year. Julie is a doctoral student in public administration at the University of Illinois at Springfield. Julie owns Spencer Films LLC, is President of Spencer Theatre Company and the Staley Museum, and director for the Staley Family Foundation. Major gift to School of Medicine will transform Alzheimer’s care, research

“A

s longtime Springfield residents, we’re proud of the impact the School of Medicine has had on the community,” Dale Smith said.

That impact prompted Dale and his wife, Deborah, to donate a substantial financial gift to the Alzheimer’s Center at SIU to expand research, enhance programming and improve care for people with Alzheimer’s disease and assist their caregivers. “The efforts of the Alzheimer’s center inspired us to give and hopefully create a consciousness within the community around the breadth of research and patient care we have here,” Dale Smith said. “Alzheimer’s is a terrible disease, and we hope our gift can help researchers at SIU Medicine produce better clinical outcomes that improve our community, one family at a time.” The center is now named the Dale and Deborah Smith Center for Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment at SIU Medicine. This gift will transform the health care of people throughout Illinois and beyond. 18

The center provides clinical care, research and community programs throughout 93 Illinois counties. Since 1986, its employees have diagnosed, treated and educated Illinoisans with Alzheimer’s and similar conditions and their families. In the past year, the center, along with its Memory and Aging Network, has served more than 4,000 patients and their families. The National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health has awarded more than $7.2 million in grants to the center for Alzheimer’s-related research in the past three years. “This gift from Dale and Deborah Smith will continue to propel research at SIU that may translate into novel treatments and interventions for patients in the future,” said Jerry Kruse, M.D., MSPH, dean and provost at SIU School of Medicine. “It will also provide much needed clinical, educational and community support for those with Alzheimer’s and their families.” Despite decades of pharmaceutical development and drug testing, Alzheimer’s disease continues to be incurable, and prevention may hold

the greatest hope for combating this disease. The research team is focused on discovering ways to stop the progression. In addition to a better quality of life, early and accurate diagnosis and timely intervention could save up to $7.9 trillion in medical and health care costs, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Erin R. Hascup, Ph.D., serves as the center’s director and as a part of the faculty in the Neuroscience Institute at SIU School of Medicine. She is an associate professor in the Departments of Neurology and Pharmacology. “What we want to do is understand the changes that are occurring across disease progression, including in the very early stages,” she said. “Many have Alzheimer’s for up to 30 years prior to cognitive decline, so we want to intervene earlier to slow or stop disease progression and improve patient outcomes and quality of life.” The center’s Beyond the Medical Center program also focuses on creative ways to improve the quality of life for both patients and caregivers through art therapy, music therapy and movement for individuals with dementia. Springfield-area caregiver Janet Scott and her husband are two of the more than 4,800 patients and caregivers who have participated in one of these programs in the last two years. “I cannot imagine what my life would be like had we not come here,” she said. “SIU has meant everything to me. They’ve been like my third arm; I’ve depended on them for so much.” Currently, 5.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 14 million. Illinois communities will continue to be impacted by various forms of dementia as the population ages, and the Smiths are eager to be a part of the solution locally and beyond. ASPIRING PHYSICIAN A PERFECT FIT FOR NEW SCHOLARSHIP

M

aryam Makhdoom hadn’t heard of the Thanu and Nongyao Kulachol Library Scholarship. It’s a new scholarship with a specific focus, and that made Makhdoom its ideal first recipient.

Established in 2019, the scholarship supports students who want to work with populations in Southeast Asia doing public health projects, which aligns with her desire to go to Singapore for a semester to learn more about international public health. Dean of Library Affairs John Pollitz contacted Makhdoom, a senior majoring in public health, to share the good news. “I was thrilled to discover I was awarded this scholarship because it fits in so well with my desires to further my knowledge about public health in Southeast Asia,” said Makhdoom, who is also the university’s 2020 Lincoln Academy of Illinois Student Laureate. Makhdoom plans to devote her life to helping improve the health and lives of people however she can. She is particularly interested in the emerging interdisciplinary fields of global health diplomacy. Her goal is to become a physician, focusing on health disparities and inequalities. She said she will likely specialize in the care of women and children. She is also seeking a Fulbright scholarship for 2021-22 to expand her research into how cultural values affect health outcomes. “Should I be awarded the Fulbright, I will use the Thanu and Nongyao Kulachol Library Scholarship I have received to travel to Singapore,” Makhdoom said. “I have been so blessed that this scholarship fits so well with my dreams.” The creation of the scholarship was a collaborative effort between the SIU Foundation and Library Affairs, along with donors Jared and Maryann Dorn. “Sometimes many students are not aware of scholarships that are available to them that align with their future plans,” Makhdoom said. “Donors really open up career paths for students and broaden their horizons. Such opportunities open their eyes and allows them to focus more clearly on their hopes and plans. I would encourage other donors to give so more students could benefit from opportunities such as the ones I have received here at SIU. I am so thankful for donors like Jared and Maryann Dorn, and I am excited about the future before me.”

A

s a senior in high school, Brock Ward was accepted into several universities, such as University of Illinois, Saint Louis University, and SIU Carbondale. Ward said that he chose the SIU College of Engineering because of several factors – distance from home, the beauty of the campus, and the offer of the SIU University Excellence Scholarship.

“Everything just fell in place for me. The affordability, the beauty surrounding me and the personalized and friendly approach the faculty has shown me really made a positive impact,” he said. Ward is a member of the college’s Leadership Development Program (LDP). The SIU College of Engineering is one of very few STEM colleges (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in the nation that offers a technical leadership program. The SIU Leadership Development Program provides a direct bridge from leadership training to a career as a technical leader. It was founded in 2006 by Dick Blaudow, an engineering alumnus and chairman of the board of Advanced Technology Services in Peoria. Blaudow and his wife, Brigitte, established the program to help develop the next generation of America’s technical leaders. Bruce DeRuntz, professor of technology at SIU and director of the College of Engineering’s Leadership Development Program, said the program truly transforms these students into leaders. “To be successful, these students know they have to prepare for success,” he said. “It’s great to watch the transformation happen in these students as they go through the LDP program.” Ward joined the group in December 2018 and said it gives him a place to practice leadership skills, project management, and real-world experience. “I am enjoying the connections I am making in both the group and in the community,” he said. “We got to go take a tour of Southern Illinois Healthcare to try out their surgery automation machines. It was very cool. LDP also connects students to a wide variety of internship opportunities.” Ward hopes his story will inspire others to support more scholarship opportunities. “I think if a donor has some money to give back to SIU, I can’t think of a better place to make an investment into young people that are motivated to make the world a better place,” Ward said. 20

Brother-sister duo make gift to name Guida-Moller Family Alumni Center

W

hen considering the opportunity to make a transformational gift to SIU, the idea of naming the Alumni Center made perfect sense to Julie Guida and Scott Moller, siblings and proud SIU alumni. With their $500,000 donation, the C-wing of Woody Hall will be named the Guida-Moller Family Alumni Center. The funds will be used to support the SIU Alumni Association, its scholarships, and programs. “We feel fortunate to give back to the university that gave so much to us,” Moller said. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to commemorate our time at SIU with this naming.” In 2019, the Alumni Association moved into a newly renovated space in Woody Hall. The center includes amenities that allow the Alumni Association to continue its mission of connecting with alumni and current students and sharing the success of SIU with the world. “Woody Hall is an iconic building on campus. It is centrally located and once served as a female dormitory,” Guida said. “While we attended, the building housed class registration and the bursar’s office. I definitely spent my fair share of time in Woody Hall.” Guida and Moller can’t help but laugh when talking about their experience as students inside Woody Hall. “We both remember the ‘Woody Shuffle,’ which was the term used to describe the rigmarole students were put through to put together a semester class schedule,” Moller said. “The experience was nerve-racking.”

SALUKI EXPERIENCE Guida, who graduated in 1979, and Moller, who graduated in 1985, both earned bachelor’s degrees in journalism with specializations in advertising. Moller later returned to SIU to earn his Master of Business Administration. Both worked at the SIU Arena, in what was an 11,000-seat facility at the time, marketing events and selling tickets to some of the university’s biggest shows. Guida worked as promotions director from 1979-81. Moller worked part-time in the ticket office from 1980-83 and then as promotions director from 1984-86.

“At the time, the arena was the mecca of Southern Illinois entertainment,” Guida said. “Working there was probably just as good an education as my classes. People from throughout the region came to the Carbondale campus to see the most popular entertainers of the time.” Guida and Moller promoted some of the biggest rock ’n’ roll and country tours of the day, including REO Speedwagon, Elton John, ZZ Top, Kenny Rogers, Foreigner, Hall & Oates, Alabama, Van Halen, Aerosmith, and more. Other entertainment acts included Ringling Bros. Circus, the Harlem Globetrotters, and Sesame Street Live. When you combine their tenures as promotions directors, the duo brought more than 250,000 people to the SIU campus. Guida recalls Bruce Springsteen’s love for playing to live audiences. In fact, as the night wore on, Springsteen just kept playing and playing one song after another. “We thought we might have to turn the lights on inside the hall to get him to end his performance,” Guida said with a laugh. Moller was a Sammy Hagar fan and enjoyed the fact that he promoted him first as a solo performer and then later as a member of Van Halen. Guida also worked in sales for the Daily Egyptian. Moller worked for Campus Services and held off-campus jobs at the University Mall, WTAO Radio, and WSIL-TV3. “We worked hard and played hard,” Moller said. “We had multiple jobs and an active social life. Julie and I were definitely all in. I encourage all college students to make the most of their college years.”

LIFE AFTER SIU After leaving SIU, Guida went on to work at the St. Louis Checker Dome, and then for a motorsports event promoter. Moller worked for a concert and theatrical promoter in Houston.

In 1987, they teamed up and founded Marketing Werks, a consumerbased marketing firm, and grew it into a $100 million-plus company. The firm developed strategy and execution for experiential marketing campaigns for some of the world’s largest brands, including Verizon, Walgreens, Hershey, LEGO, PlayStation, Bridgestone, Archer Daniels Midland, ConAgra, and many others.

“We took the information we learned in class, combined it with the real-life work and social experience we had in Carbondale, and applied those learnings to our life and work after SIU,” Guida said. “SIU offers students hands-on experiential learning that has lifelong value.”

“At its height, we employed more than 200 full-time professional service employees at our headquarters in Chicago and offices in New York City and Southern California,” Moller said. “We also contracted with 3,000 field staff to implement programs for the agency’s clients.”

Today, Guida splits her time between Newport Beach, California, and Chicago. She is an active board member of Chicago’s Hyde Park Art Center. Moller resides in Chicago. He is a principal of AKA Partners, a marketing communications firm. He also serves on the SIU Foundation Board and SIU Alumni Association Board.

Marketing Werks was regularly recognized in numerous industry and business publications. Crain’s Chicago Business chose it as one of Chicago’s 50 Fastest Growing companies for five years running. Promo magazine and Event Marketer magazine consistently ranked Marketing Werks as the top independent experiential agency in the U.S. The Chicago Tribune included the company several times in its annual list of Best Places to Work.

They sold the company in late 2013.

ONG ESTABLISHES SCHOLARSHIPS, BRINGS ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS TO SIU

H

enry Ong has lived and worked all around the world, but he hasn’t forgotten the role SIU played in his life.

I had an enjoyable experience at SIU and the wonderful outdoor experiences in Southern Illinois,” he said. “That was some of the best times of my life.” After receiving his bachelor’s degree and MBA from the College of Business, Ong spent many successful years working for Whirlpool. Then, in the mid-90s, he made a career change and began to focus on education. “I wanted to create resources that would align with 21st Century learning concepts,” he said. “I have always been good at mathematical games. I started working with an educational supply company. I learned about the educational system.” From there, he decided to develop his own mathematical competitions and founded the Singapore International Mastery Contests Center (SIMCC). “We started in 2006, and it has grown quickly into one of the largest academic competitions in the world,” he said. “We’re now in 38 countries.” Working with SIU’s Center for International Education, Ong has established two endowed scholarships for international students, and the SIMCC recently entered a partnership with SIU. The university will host future competitions. “Beyond simply competing, we created a pathway for students to win awards through competition,” he said. “There are more than 200,000 students who take part in these competitions worldwide.”

A LONG JOURNEY Like all young men from Singapore, Ong was required to serve in the country’s military. After that, he spent a year teaching and applied to SIU. He was accepted and came to Carbondale in January of 1982. It was then that he applied for and received a scholarship for international students. “That helped me finish my degree,” he said. “SIU was very generous to me.” He had a job offer from Whirlpool when he graduated but had to wait on his visa to be approved. For six months, he worked as an intern in the university controller’s office. Once he started working for Whirlpool, he rose through the ranks quickly.

Ong transferred from his U.S. position to a position in Hong Kong and later become managing director for Whirlpool in Malaysia and Singapore. He ended his career with the corporation as Asian audit director and took a job developing new appliances with a mentor of his in San Francisco. “Not long after that, I decided Asia was much more attractive, so I moved back to Singapore to distribute products in Asia,” he said. A few years later, he transitioned to the world of producing educational resources. Since founding the SIMCC, he’s seen the power of the academic competitions and is excited about bringing them and scholarships to SIU. “We’re looking forward to this partnership,” he said. “I hope these students can also enjoy the same fantastic experience I had at SIU.”

NURSING SCHOLARSHIP HONORS THE LATE MONICA L. RYAN

T

here may be no better way to honor the legacy of a caregiver than to support the next generation.

That’s the mindset that led John Ryan, and his wife, Marsha, to endow the Monica L. Ryan Nursing Scholarship with a gift of $100,000. Monica Ryan was John’s mother. She passed away in October 2019 at age 95. “She was a role model for everybody,” John Ryan said. “She was the embodiment of determination and grace – a remarkable woman.” The scholarship will benefit a student in SIU Carbondale’s recently established Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Preference will be given to BSN students who have expressed interest in working at Southern Illinois Healthcare after graduation. “We hope the recipients will choose to stay local,” John Ryan said. “This program will serve the people of Southern Illinois. We are encouraging newly trained nurses to join the local team which provides extraordinary medical care.”

MOTHER, NURSE, CAREGIVER The first in her family to go to college, Monica Ryan earned a nursing degree from Northwestern and worked at Wesley Memorial Hospital (now Northwestern Memorial Hospital). She met her husband, Bud, a law student at Northwestern, when he was visiting a sick friend. After their marriage, the couple moved to Jacksonville, Illinois. Bud Ryan was born and raised in Jacksonville, went to Illinois College, was state’s attorney for 16 years and an associate circuit judge until his retirement. Monica Ryan was active in numerous civic organizations in Jacksonville and a volunteer at Passavant Hospital. Her nursing career was put on hold while she raised four kids, but she was always a full-time caregiver. “Her energy was a marvel to all of us,” John Ryan said. “She took care of my father’s grandparents and parents, and her own parents as they aged. She was the go-to caregiver in the family.” Once the children were grown, she renewed her license and then did volunteer work at Jacksonville’s hospitals until 2012 when she moved to Carbondale to be closer to her family.

‘A SPECIAL PLACE’ John and Marsha Ryan have deep roots at SIU. John was part of the first class to graduate from the School of Law. Marsha has worked as a faculty member at the School of Medicine and School of Law. She also served on the Board of Trustees. Both of John’s brothers graduated from SIU, as have his and Marsha’s two children and a nephew. “SIU has a special place in our hearts,” John Ryan said. “We have a lot of fondness for the university.” The opportunity to earn a BSN in Carbondale made endowing a scholarship in his mother’s name the clear choice for the Ryans’ philanthropy. “Health care is personal for everyone,” he said. “We are pleased to contribute in this way to the health of our community.” For the Ryans, the ability to advance one’s education in the heart of Southern Illinois is what sets the region apart. EYE ON THE SKY: ALLEN REACHING FOR NEW HEIGHTS

H

aving a clear vision of what we want to accomplish early in life can be rare. Vernecelyn Allen is a remarkable exception. Allen graduated this year with a Bachelor of Science in aviation management and an Associate of Applied Sciences in aviation flight. “Thanks to my mother, I was exposed to different career opportunities through summer camps. I received great experiences during those times that taught me about areas like technology and theater, but the one that intrigued me the most is aviation,” she said. In high school, the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) invited Allen to attend a camp in Delaware where she received flight hours, learned about aviation, flew air simulators, and visited control towers. “OBAP really nurtured my love for flying. Aviation is not largely populated by black pilots, so they really served as mentors for me and encouraged me in aviation,” she said. In her senior year of high school, Allen attended an SIU college fair. She learned about their aviation management and flight program. Allen later visited SIU during an open house and was impressed by its aviation program and the many scholarships that were available. Allen applied to eight other universities in addition to SIU; however, it was being awarded the Chancellor’s Scholarship that helped her choose SIU.

“Aviation flight fees can run up to $25,000 above the cost of a regular tuition in a single year, and the SIU aviation department offered opportunities to students to apply for aid. Receiving the Chancellor’s Scholarship and other aviation scholarships really helped along with the African-American Achievement Scholarship,” she said. Allen is thankful that the scholarships have allowed her to minimize her financial burden. “I would definitely be more stressed out if I had to face a larger loan balance after I graduate. Funding makes such a difference in our lives,” she said. “It could mean the difference between living out or giving up a dream. I am so grateful to the people and organizations who have found it important to create scholarships so that students can empower themselves to continue to pursue education.” Upon graduation, Allen hopes to become a flight instructor at SIU. Her goal is to return to her hometown of Memphis and fly for Federal Express. She would also like to be an officer in the Air National Guard. “Someday, I want to focus on giving back to groups underrepresented in the industry. I think scholarships would empower more to attain the education they desire, and to reach beyond the stars.”

CELEBRATING A LIFE WELL LIVED Scholarship honors longtime business professor

“Marvin loved SIU, loved his students, and he loved that program. He was one of the few professors who had extended office hours – his door was always open to students. The students loved Marvin,” Patricia said. “His goal was always to try to change the life of a student who may not have had the ability to do it on his or her own.” Marvin had numerous scholarly publications, and he co-authored three books. He was a member of the National Association of University Professors, the American Management Association, the Illinois Retired Teacher Association, and the American Accounting Association. The Tuckers embraced the Carbondale community. Marvin coached Little League while their three sons were growing up. Marvin also loved his church and church family, serving as deacon and greeter at University Baptist Church. He was also active in the hospital auxiliary. The family thrived in their neighborhood, enjoyed the schools in Carbondale, had season tickets to Saluki football games, and often went to the Rec Center to swim and rock climb. Marvin Tucker

igh school sweethearts Patricia and Marvin Tucker from Paducah, Kentucky, enjoyed a life well lived. Married young, the couple attended Western Kentucky State University together, where they both received bachelor’s degrees. Following that, they moved to Indiana where Marvin earned his master’s in accountancy. Upon graduation, he was awarded a scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. in accounting at the University of Alabama. “Legendary football coach Bear Bryant and (quarterback) Joe Namath were making history at Alabama,” Patricia said. “Marvin and I got $1 tickets to every game, and we got to watch two iconic figures change college football forever. It was a magical time.” Marvin received his Ph.D. in accounting in 1966 and was courted by several universities. He chose SIU because of its midwestern values and proximity to hometown Paducah. Marvin began his career as an assistant professor but quickly rose through the ranks to become full professor. During that time, he helped establish, and later directed, the university’s Master of Accountancy program.

When Marvin retired from SIU after 32 years, he and Patricia drafted their will. “We gave a copy to the dean of the SIU College of Business at the time. In the will, Marvin stipulated that if he predeceased me, I would set up a scholarship for the SIU Master of Accountancy program. He wanted the decision of choosing the scholarship recipient to come from the faculty so they would know the students and their backgrounds,” Patricia said. “It was quite a bit of money, but while I was Marvin’s first love, SIU was definitely his second love. We both felt good about our decision to give back and help future students succeed. We lived a blessed life, and I thank God for it every single day.” Terry Clark, dean of the College of Business and Analytics, shared his appreciation for the Tuckers’ generosity. “The Tuckers’ gift to the College of Business and Analytics is visionary. Its impact on the lives and careers of students will resound for generations. Marvin had an outstanding career with our college,” he said. “His kindness and dedication linger with us. We are so grateful for Marvin and Patricia’s generosity. Through this scholarship, he and Patricia continue to reflect the spirit of giving that has been their legacy.”

DANIEL B. PARKINSON SOCIETY $25,000 - $49,999 Daniel Parkinson, SIU’s fourth president (1897-1913), was one of the university’s original faculty members. During his tenure, extensive changes to both the curriculum and the facilities were made. In 1907, the Illinois General Assembly approved the bachelor of education degree – the first being granted by Southern Illinois Normal University in 1909. SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS The SIU Foundation accepts contributions in the form of cash, securities and real estate or personal property. Many corporations will match the contribution of employees, officers, directors and, in some instances, spouses and retirees. The SIU Foundation also accepts various types of planned gifts, whereby the donor makes a gift commitment during his or her lifetime that will benefit the university. Planned gifts are in the form of bequests, gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and life agreements. The Foundation’s goal is to increase private support to enhance the University’s mission of being a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate research institution.

FINANCIALS ENDOWMENT INVESTMENTS The SIU Foundation receives endowment contributions and invests them into the endowment investment pool for perpetuity. An annual distribution of a portion of the revenue generated from the endowment accounts is transferred to corresponding current accounts and used according to the donors’ restrictions. MISSION STATEMENT The Southern Illinois University Foundation was established in 1942 to solicit, receive, hold and administer gifts from private sources for educational purposes. The SIU Foundation provides alumni and other friends as a means to invest in the future of their university. The foundation is an independent, non-profit corporation, which exists solely to further the mission of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. It is a designated 501(c)3 organization with appropriate approval from the Internal Revenue Service to issue tax deductible receipts for private gifts received to support SIU. The mission of the SIU Foundation is to maximize private support for SIU to assist the university in achieving its long-range goals. As outlined in the Strategic Plan, the activities, programs and efforts of the foundation for the next two years will be driven by five priority areas. These areas are developing next wave fundraising programs, fostering and improving relationships with key constituency groups, recruiting and retaining strong high-capability staff, creating comprehensive marketing and communication strategies and implementing board governance and leadership structures. Throughout the coming years, the foundation will continue to raise money with the help of others, praise our quality board and staff and tell our story.
