THE DIRECTOR Welcome!

We are pleased to welcome in the summer months in our office! Excited summer campers take over the campus and we enjoy their enthusiasm for learning. Summer also brings our summer STEAM library tours and local libraries work with us to offer hands-on learning opportunities for their young patrons. For adults, there are many options for you to learn something new as well. If this is the time to start or finish your degree, SIUE is here for you with numerous options to attend fully online or in person to earn degrees and certificates. Certificate programs, such as Certified Recovery Specialist, provide short-term training options that can help you demonstrate your skills during an interview. Just for fun, a new Afro-American Dance Styles class, taught by Sarah Goins, will get you up and moving on Wednesday afternoons. If cooking is your passion, consider Indian Vegetarian Cooking or German Breads classes. We are here to serve our community and would love to here from you.

Collinsville Historical Museum

Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis

Join us for a tour of the Collinsville Historical Museum with a talk by Peter Stehman on the history of the Collins family, the origins of Collinsville and the importance of coal mining in the region for more than 100 years. Afterward, we’ll enjoy lunch at a local favorite.

Embark on a guided tour of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.

You will have time to explore the museum and gift shop after the tour.

Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum Join us for a guided tour of the newly re-opened Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum in St. Louis. We will explore the permanent collection and hear from a survivor or descendent of a survivor of the Holocaust.

Wildey Theatre and 222 Artisan Join us for a tour of the historic Wildey Theatre in downtown Edwardsville. Sustained Dialogue is a process that addresses issues of community relations, including race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, ability status and other topics that often aren’t effectively discussed in diverse groups. These sessions create a space for students to convey and exchange not just their opinions about contentious matters, but also share their personal stories and life experiences.

NEW Discover the language and culture of Italy by developing

Conversational Spanish – Beginners 2 This course is ideal for those who have taken the introductory level courses or who have previous knowledge of the language and wish to develop better conversational skills. Introduction to American Sign Language and Deaf Culture You will focus on mastering the basics of fingerspelling, numbers, colors, facial grammar and sentence structure. You will also learn conversational and cultural behaviors necessary to hold a beginning-level conversation in ASL with deaf or hearing-impaired users of the language. Introductory information about deaf culture and deaf humor will also be presented to provide you with a broad picture of the language and culture.

Introduction to American Sign Language is an excellent beginners class for learning about the history and origin of sign language and deaf culture in the United States, and learning to sign. The instructor was extremely knowledgeable and had a very diverse and engaging teaching style that definitely made you want to attend class each week. I began learning to sign words and concepts from the first night to the last, and my family and friends were interested in hearing about what I learned after each class.

Yoga and Breath Work

Restorative Yoga

Breathing, like movement, is so fundamental to the human experience that we rarely even think about our breath. However, mindful movements and breath work, or intentional practices of breathing and moving, can deeply increase our quality of life.

This class unites the art of mindful movement and breath work with practices in diverse breath work techniques and movements inspired by gentle yoga, Tai Chi, qi qong and more. Instructor: Louise M. Hamlin-Laird, E-RYT 200, E-RYT 500, YACEP

Restorative yoga is a powerfully gentle practice with exceptional benefits such as the reduction of blood pressure and reduced risk of stroke or heart attack. A regular restorative yoga practice should be considered critical self-care for those employed in high-stress industries. Rise and Shine Yoga

Sit to Stand – Chair Yoga

Experience the benefits of early morning yoga as you stretch and strengthen your body, awaken and refresh your mind, and nourish your spirit. Our practice will focus on the synchronization of movement and breath. You will build endurance, strength, flexibility and mental focus; and leave feeling energized, refreshed and ready for anything the day has in store. Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga in which poses are performed while seated and with the aid of a chair. This yoga is suitable for all levels of abilities; standing is optional. It is an excellent class for beginners; seniors; individuals with recent injuries, balance or coordination issues, limited mobility, and disabilities; and those who have difficulty or do not want to get up and down on the floor. Chair yoga helps reduce stress while increasing flexibility, range of motion, circulation and strength, balance and coordination, and lung capacity. This class incorporates breathing exercises, simple visual meditation techniques, gentle stretching, easy yoga postures and a final relaxation.

NEW AfroCultural Dance Styles This course will consist of traditional West African dance, as well as modern dance styles. We will begin with cultural dance practices that were often used in ceremonies and rituals, and as a means of communication. These same dance styles have stayed current and are used in today’s world not only for recreation, but for representation and cultural awareness. As it made its way to the Americas, African music and dance evolved into hip hop, r&b, soul, etc. We will mainly focus on how historic movement practices served as a model and foundation for many popular dance styles performed today.

NEW Kids Plate Workshop

Kiddos will learn how to make a slab plate out of low-fire earthenware clay. These plates will be food, dishwasher and microwave safe. Projects need to stay at our shop for two weeks after class ends to be fired.

Create and Party: Cactus Watercolor Miss Ruthie will teach you how to create this watercolor cactus painting. You will learn simple watercolor, masking and ink techniques, and gain an understanding of watercolor and its properties. You will leave class with a finished painting. You are encouraged to bring snacks and drinks to the class and relax while making art.

Paint with Bob Ross Come and join Ms. Ruthie and paint-along with Mr. Bob! This is a fun class for all skill levels. You will be working with oil paints, brushes and turpenoid to clean the brushes. We will cue up an episode of “The Joy of Painting” and start and stop the episode while we paint along with Bob. All materials and instruction are included for this two-hour session.

My daughter and I took this class as my daughter’s birthday activity. I am a huge Bob Ross fan. We had both previously used his painting as inspiration with acrylic paint.

Beginning Adult One-Shot Wheel Throwing

First time at the wheel? Ever wanted to try wheel throwing?

Now’s your chance! Join us for a one-day, three-hour session where we’ll walk you through the basics of wheel throwing.

Lumpy pots and goofy bowls galore. Give it a shot and see if you like it! You’ll throw 3-4 pieces on the wheel and will pick them up 2-3 weeks later (after they’re dried, fired and glazed!).

Classes are limited to eight participants and students must be 16 years of age or older.

Stained Glass Basics

Join us and learn the basics of Tiffany-style stained glass. You will learn how to cut glass, use the stained glass grinder, and use copper foil tape to wrap each piece. Then you will learn how to use the soldering iron to combine all of the pieces together. At the end of the class, you will leave with one small sun catcher.

In this workshop, we’ll explore how Adobe Photoshop can be used to adjust, remove and manipulate various flaws in original images, while carefully describing the procedure to make the treatment unrecognizable. This workshop is ideal for beginners who want to learn how to enhance their images digitally.

Painting Landscapes A visual arts course, which will focus on bringing landscapes to life through paint. You will be encouraged to use both acrylics and watercolors to create a variety of landscapes. We will facilitate explanations of fundamental painting elements as you work, as well as give some examples of different styles used in history to paint the great outdoors. As you move through this course, we will also facilitate projects of your interest and give you helpful feedback to improve your painting skills.

Becoming a Photographer Workshop Discover Digital Photography This course provides an overview of digital photography for those who are not familiar with the technology. Students will learn the basic functions of their camera and controls to create high-quality images on their smartphone, DSLR camera, or compact or mirrorless image-making devices. Students wanting to take better images will learn the basic practices of digital photography such as understanding exposure and composition, learning how to properly store images, editing photographs with different kinds of software, and preparing images for printing. In addition to technical skills, students also practice developing the creativity and artistic eye that allow them to express themselves through visual imagery.

Course Fee: $99* Tuesdays, 5-7 p.m., May 9-June 13 SIUE Edwardsville Campus

This two-day workshop includes both lecture and hands-on practice, as well as a mini trip to The Gardens at SIUE. You will learn how to create frame-worthy images with your phone and/ or camera in this hands-on class. You learn how to use all of your cameras’ settings and functions as you practice taking digital photographs. The fundamentals of image composition, portrait photo guidance and editing tools for phone cameras will all be covered in this workshop, along with editing tools on your phone for turning a casual snapshot into a thoughtful and personal image. A one-hour lunch break is included.

Ceramic Wheelthrowing

A visual arts course which use the loose and exciting medium of watercolor to paint different types of trees, plants, leafs and flowers. Beginners and intermediate students are welcome, and will be encouraged to investigate imagery which most interests them. A list of supplies to purchase will be provided prior to the course beginning.

In this ceramic art studio course, you will be introduced to essential ceramic wheelthrowing techniques, including centering, throwing, altering, trimming and functional attachments. Designed for all skill levels, you can pursue various functional pottery forms such as cups, bowls, plates, jars, teapots and pitchers. You will engage in additional aspects of the ceramic process such as glazing, kiln-loading/unloading, firing and cold finishes. Visual presentations of historical and contemporary ceramic artwork will add context and inspiration toward ongoing projects and techniques demonstrated in class. At the end of the course, you will take home a variety of glazed, completed ceramic artworks.

Friday Open Studios

Enameling Part II

Open studio hours allow you to work on projects independently.

An instructor will be available to answer questions as needed. You may sign up for one night or all available nights. You will have access to the metalsmithing studio but must provide your own basic kit and metal materials. Prerequisite: Students must be familiar with the processes they intend to work in (soldering, enameling, etc.).

Continue your exploration with glass on metal. Demonstrations will include advanced applications and techniques in enamels.

Copper sheet and enamels supplies included. Prerequisite: Introduction to Enameling required.

Foundations in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Making This weekend intensive foundational class introduces students to traditional techniques in metalsmithing and jewelry making through the manipulation of copper and brass. Capturing Enamels and Stones in Bezels and Prongs Expand your jewelry designs by including stones, enamels or found objects into your work with cold- or hot-setting techniques. Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) and Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) Training Program The CRSS and CPRS Training Program is offered by SIUE and partners from regional mental health and substance use disorder treatment agencies. CRSS and CPRS professionals provide a range of recovery support services in healthcare and human services for persons recovering from mental health, substance use and co-occurring disorders. The CRSS and CPRS credentials requires mastery of the knowledge and skills identified by the professions. The training program prepares candidates to sit for both the Illinois CRSS and CPRS exams. The training program requires 110 hours of didactic education that addresses the core competency areas identified by the Illinois Certification Board (ICB) for both the CRSS and CPRS credentials. Each candidate is required to complete a 300-hour CRSS/CPRS internship under the supervision of a qualified mental health or substance use disorder professional. If funds are provided by the State of Illinois, all costs associated with this non-credit program will be paid including tuition, fees, books, internship stipends, exam fees and additional stipends to reduce barriers to program completion (e.g. transportation).

Understanding Debits and Credits

General Ledger and Month End Procedures

In this course, you will learn about the accounting equation and the five categories involved in every business: assets, liabilities, owner’s equity, revenue and expenses. Every financial transaction falls into one or more of these categories. Learn how to create a chart of accounts that meet the needs of your business. You will learn how double entry bookkeeping works and the process of recording debits and credits. This course will show you how to identify, analyze and record transactions using journal entries under the cash basis accounting method.

In this course, you will learn how to post journal entries to the correct general ledger accounts impacted by each transaction.

This course will show you how to make sure your general ledger balances at the end of each month by preparing an unadjusted trial balance. EDUCARD Do you want the opportunity to explore possibilities of professional growth or personal enrichment in an economical and flexible way?

If you answered “Yes,” we invite you to sit in on regular classes at SIUE through our Educard Program. Educard is a special community program that allows you to attend selected credit classes offered by SIUE. It provides an opportunity for you to sample the subjects that interest you most. Anyone who is not currently enrolled for credit in the University is eligible for Educard. High School students are eligible and may take up to three classes.

Which classes are approved for Educard participation?

For a full list of classes, please visit banner.siue.edu/ssb and click Class Schedule. Select the Fall 2023 term and search any subject you would like. Classes not offered through Educard are classes with a full enrollment, non-credit classes, travel study, distance education, classes in which a danger may exist, classes requiring prerequisites, and classes where added direct expense may be incurred by the University.

What is not included?

• You will not receive a grade as an Educard participant.

• No official records of your classwork or attendance will be kept; therefore, no transcript is available.

• Since you do not pay normal student welfare and activity fees, you may not participate in student services and activities supported by those fees.

What about textbooks?

Educard participant may borrow textbooks, as available, at no cost through Textbook Service. You may pick up your textbooks after the first week of classes, and you are required to return textbooks to Textbook Service at the end of the term.

Parking on Campus For courses on on weekdays on the SIUE main campus, parking is included in the cost of the course. A reduced price is available at checkout for participants who do not need parking or prefer to pay for parking on their own. Parking passes will be emailed to paid registered participants; please provide a valid license plate number to avoid paying additional parking fines.

The printed pass must be displayed on the dashboard of the registered vehicle and is valid only during the times of the course (30-minute grace period is extended for travel to and from the meeting location).

SIUE SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITIES COLLABORATIVE siue.edu/successful-communities Since its start in 2017, the SIUE Successful Communities Collaborative (SSCC) has partnered with nine different cities and villages in Madison and St. Clair counties. Over 800 SIUE students from approximately 25 disciplines have been engaged thus far with partners through community-identified projects that are embedded in their courses. Additionally, SSCC coordinates two special projects: Community-Oriented Digital Engagement Scholars (CODES) CODES introduces first-generation, Black, Latinx and/or Pell-eligible students to digital community engagement. CODES’ first cohort of scholars began in fall 2022. CODES Scholars work in small research teams that focus on seemingly unsolvable problems, such as climate change or poverty’s manifestations across rural and urban environments. The project is led by Jessica DeSpain, PhD, professor in the Department of English Language and Literature and co-director of the SIUE Interdisciplinary Research and Informatics (IRIS) Center, and Connie Frey Spurlock, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Sociology and director of SSCC. Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT) Campus Center The SIUE TRHT Campus Center seeks to prepare the next generation of leaders to confront racism and dismantle the belief in a hierarchy of human value. The integration of TRHT and SSCC results in more equitable access to high impact practices (HIPs) for SIUE students because community-identified needs are embedded into courses in which students are enrolled.
