FAQs ABOUT RESUMES Do I need an Objective or Career Objective?

Think about if an objective is needed – does it serve a purpose being on your resumes?

You may NOT want to use one if: 1) If you are sending a cover letter along with your resume, you probably don’t need an objective. You will cover that in the opening paragraph of the cover letter. 2) If you are attending a job fair and passing out the same version of your resume to multiple employers, you may not want to use an objective if you are interested in multiple types of positions. 3) If you are applying online directly from an advertised job posting, an objective is unnecessary. You may want to use one if you are sending your resume to a company that has multiple job openings and you want to be sure the employer understands for which jobs you want to be considered, or which areas you are interested in working.

How long should my resume be?

Most new college graduates’ resumes should be one page long. A two-page is acceptable if all information is relevant. For instance, if you have multiple college degrees, or you have several internship or work experiences that are related to the job you are seeking you may exceed one page. Be sure all information is relevant. Don’t just fill up space with unimportant information.

Should I include my GPA? If your GPA is a 3.0 or higher include it in your education section. However, if the employer has listed a minimum GPA requirement, it is in your best interested to list your GPA. Some employers, specifically engineering firms, will frown upon a missing GPA. What do I include in my education section?

For current college students and/or college graduates, include only college or university level work and official training you have completed since high school.

Should I list ALL of my former academic institutions?

The short answer, yes. However, if you have attended an institution for only one semester, it is acceptable to leave it out. We do not recommend including your high school unless you are applying to work there in some capacity or if you have received no college credits at this time.

How far back should I go with work experience?

If you have a lot of work experience, consider just including the past 15 -20 years of experience. Although some recruiters like to see everything you’ve done, beyond 15 years, you may want to make entries bare-bones and only include job title, company name, location and time period.

What categories MUST be included on my resume?

At a minimum, your name, address, phone number, email, education, experience.

Where do I put my references?

References should go on a separate sheet of paper. Be sure your name is on the top of the reference page or cut and paste the same heading from your resume which includes your name, address and contact information onto the top of the reference page. Skip down a couple of lines, put the heading “References,� and list your reference people. Include their name, title, company/agency, address, phone number, email address.

What Kind of Paper Should I use for My Resume?

Paper that is white or off-white ideally, with no borders, shading or marbling in the background is best. High quality resume paper, which is heavier weight (24 lb) and has a high cotton content, gives your documents a very professional look. Your resume may be photocopied, faxed, or scanned into a database, so eliminat e potential problems by providing a high-quality printed version with no distracting or dark background.
