WHY SOUTHERN?

The Princeton Review includes Southern in its 2009 America’s Best Value Colleges ranking. It also gives Southern special notice for our unique recycling program -- vermicomposting.

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education ranks Southern 42nd among all universities for total bachelor degrees awarded to black students. Several of our degree programs merited special notice: in graduating black education majors, we are 2nd in the nation, we are 31st in health professions-clinical sciences, and in the top 50 for black English majors.

CosmoGirl ranked SIUC in its 100 Best Colleges List, and ranked us in

the top five for “Niche Factor: Health Services for Women.”

The Automotive Industry Planning Council ranks our Automotive Technology Program as the best in the country.

Our Aviation Technologies’ aerobatic team won the Collegiate National Team Award six of the last seven years, taking home individual flying titles as well.

REQUIREMENTS Transfer students with 26 or more transferable semester hours: You must have at least a 2.0 overall GPA (on a 4.0 scale as calculated by SIUC). You must be eligible to continue enrollment at the last institution attended.

How and when do I apply for admission?

Go to www.admissions.siu.edu to apply online. We recommend that you apply one year in advance. Individualized 2+2 students should apply in the first year at their community college – turn the page to see information on this program.

How do I know if my credits will transfer?

Southern accepts college-level credits from regionally accredited institutions.

We have several programs to help you plan to attend Southern even while you are at another college.

What is the maximum number of credits that will transfer to Southern?

There is no maximum number of credits you can transfer. However, you must earn at least 60 semester hours of your bachelor’s degree at a four-year university, and at least the last 30 semester hours must be earned at Southern for you to earn a Southern diploma.

INDIVIDUALIZED TWO PLUS TWO The Individualized Two Plus Two program is for students who begin their college careers at a community college and intend to transfer to Southern later.

Two Plus Two offers…

Individualized academic plans based on your declared major – You won’t need to guess which courses at your community college transfer to SIUC. You’ll have a list of which courses transfer and which ones you need to fulfill core curriculum requirements at SIUC. You’ll also know which ones will apply to your major. Each semester, you should send an official transcript to SIUC to make sure you remain on track.

Make those credits count!

You should apply for this program as soon as possible – even in your very first semester. The earlier you apply, the more benefit you receive!

Here’s how to get in: • Complete the SIUC Application for Admission and Scholarships form.

• Complete the transcript release form that comes with the application – and mark the box that says, “I want to participate in 2+2.”

• Note on the form which semester you plan to begin attending Southern.

• Pay the non-refundable $30 application fee.

NOTE: Admission to 2+2 does not guarantee your admission to Southern – you still have to earn it, the same as any other student. You are admitted to SIUC about one year in advance of your anticipated transfer date.

CAPSTONE OPTION The Capstone Option is for students in several of our major programs who have or will earn an associate degree in applied science or equivalent certification.

The Capstone Option • Makes it possible for students to earn their bachelor’s degrees in 60 semester hours after the AAS degree.

• Abbreviates the University Core Curriculum requirements to 30 semester hours rather than 41 semester hours.

It is a student-friendly city combining small-town friendliness with urban center advantages. It offers a mix of brand-name retail and unique boutiques, a lively downtown, and a business district with a shopping mall and movie theaters. The city also features the blend of collegetown coffee shops, nightspots, international cuisine and bookstores you might expect, as well as vibrant live music and art scenes.

Nature lovers will be happy to know that Carbondale is a short distance from the Shawnee National Forest and such state parks as Giant City, Pyramid, Garden of the Gods and Ferne Clyffe. Carbondale is within a short driving distance from St. Louis (about a two-hour drive) and from Nashville and Memphis (about a threehour drive). Many students ride Amtrak – especially the route to Chicago.

Or Irish dance? It’s all at the same place – Shryock Auditorium. Also, McLeod and Kleinau Theaters host plays and the performing arts. The Surplus and Vergette Galleries and the University Museum have art displays from the traditional to the alternative to the contemporary.

Student Health Center – The Student Health Center offers a continuum of care under one roof. Services include: - Medical Clinic - Pharmacy - Dental Services - Mental Health Clinic - Preventive Medicine - Dial-A-Nurse - Wellness Center

Entertainment – The Student Programming Council, a Registered Student Organization, brings concerts, movies, comedy acts, lectures and special events to the SIUC Student Center. The SIU Arena hosts larger scale concerts and events.

Other events, such as the Big Muddy Film Festival, occur throughout the year.

Student Recreation Center – The Rec Center is a 214,000-square-foot training facility with indoor tracks and courts, weight rooms, Olympic-size swimming pool, a climbing wall and more than 200 exercise stations. Come to the Rec for intramural sports or exercise classes. In addition to the Rec Center, there is Campus Lake, including boat docks, beach, 2.2-mile exercise path, a disc golf course and more.

Student Center – The hub of casual recreation may well be the Student Center.

You can bowl or shoot pool, enjoy the free wireless over a Starbucks latte, grab lunch, catch a movie, throw some clay on a pottery wheel, pre-order text books, see such notables as poet laureate Maya Angelou or Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka.

Our Student Center is one of the largest student unions in the nation.

Sports – Salukis compete in 16 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports as part of the Missouri Valley Conference.
