Letter FROM THE President “I cannot do this alone; we cannot do this alone.” - Mother Mary Veronica, Foundress
Dear Friends, As Sisters of the Divine Compassion, we are continually reminded that our mission is not carried forward by us alone. It lives in the hearts of those we serve, those who walk beside us, and those who generously support us. Our legacy lives in you – our partners in mission. Our charism of compassion calls us to respond to the needs of our time with faith, courage, and love for the people we serve, as well as our aging Sisters. As you know, the majority of our Sisters are now living their mission in retirement. With your generous support, they continue to live safely and in community with other Sisters. Additionally, the RDC Community continues to serve and strengthen children, families and individuals, especially in times of vulnerability. Our Collaboration for Compassion represented by individuals from 22 entities in and around the White Plains community, advocates for the housing insecure and homeless population. Our Sisters who administer and teach in schools are strengthening the minds and spirits of the children in their care. Now independent organizations, the Compassion Centers in the Bronx and Dover Plains continue our mission of service to marginalized populations. And thanks to the generosity of so many who donated to our 2025 Christmas appeal, we continue to support the Little Sisters of St. Therese in Haiti. In response to these difficult economic times, we remain an active, lifetime member of the Leviticus Fund. Our original contribution continues to support the investment in projects to build, expand or improve homes, childcare centers, charter public schools, health centers, and economic development in cities, towns, and rural areas across our region. Each of these projects enrich lives - from infants to the elderly. The Hudson Valley Religious Collaborative (HVRC), of which we are a member, has strengthened our voice in advocating on behalf of our Sisters and created efficiencies that improve our stewardship of finite resources. We are deeply grateful for your trust in us, and your belief and participation in our mission. Your generosity helps us plan for the future, and ensures that our living legacy remains vibrant — rooted in prayer, expressed in service, and carried forward with you – our partners in mission. Please know that you are remembered in our daily prayers with deep appreciation. May the compassion you extend to our Sisters and into the world return to you many times over. With love and prayerful gratitude,
Sr. Laura Donovan, RDC President

Collaboration for Compassion The Collaboration for Compassion (CfC) is a group of professionals representing 22 organizations in the White Plains and surrounding areas. We are dedicated to advocating for the housing insecure/ homeless population in White Plains. Below includes a timeline outlining our work to date.
2020
The Sisters, Associates and Companions of the Divine Compassion affirmed the exploration of the Charter for Compassion at their Chapter Meeting.
2021
Research and Development began, including meeting with the White Plains Mayor and other city officials about the top “discomforts” in the White Plains Community • Discomforts are issues that are causing pain and suffering to individuals, groups or the entire community—which can be addressed and relieved through compassionate action. • It was recommended that homelessness, an increasing challenge in White Plains, might be a discomfort we might help alleviate.
2022
A Collaboration for Compassion (CfC) Advisory Committee, including Sisters, Associates, Companions and Alumnae from Divine Compassion schools was established, and early planning and recruitment began to establish a Community of Compassion pilot program in White Plains.
2023
The Divine Compassion Community became a member of the worldwide Charter for Compassion, and the CfC Advisory Committee continued to meet with government officials, nonprofit and membership organizations, corporate citizens and more to: • Find out what is already being done, or has been done, to address the most challenging issues in White Plains, and learn what has worked and not worked, and recognize and acknowledge those successes. • Invite people to join us in creating a Community of Compassion in order to give voice and services to people in need in White Plains. In December 2023, we hosted a meeting of professionals from the government, health care, faith-based, nonprofit, small business and corporate sectors to discuss and identify priority focus areas for the initiative.
2024
2
In January 2024, our proposal to create a Community of Compassion initiative in White Plains was reviewed and approved by the Charter for Compassion organization. The CfC began to meet quarterly, focusing on identifying and prioritizing our objectives for the initiative. • Advocating for the elimination of the shelter contribution for the homeless populations has been the focus of our work.

2025
CfC continues to focus on advocating for the elimination of the shelter contribution and raising awareness about the housing insecure/homeless population in White Plains and Westchester County in order to: • Obtain a waiver for the shelter contribution in Westchester County • Support Senator Shelley Mayer’s NYS Bill S8268 and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin’s NYS Bill A8509 which call to remove the requirement that any earned income from a homeless family in Westchester County receiving temporary housing assistance be applied to room and board, or to eliminate a need for temporary housing assistance, or as a condition to receive temporary housing assistance. As we continue our advocacy efforts, the CfC began initial work in public awareness, creating and sponsoring an advertisement placed in Westchester Magazine (see below), which addresses the Executive order about the homeless population.

Reframing the Conversation on Homelessness in America
The recent Executive Order on homelessness, Ending Crime and Disorder on America’s Streets, offers an opportunity to confront some ugly truths about homelessness in America and why it persists despite the relative wealth of American society.
The first truth: a dishonest narrative For decades, we have been told that people are homeless because they are mentally ill, addicted, or simply unwilling to work. We accept this narrative because it means the unhoused are to blame for their situation, and we - as a society - are absolved of responsibility for addressing the deplorable conditions in which many unhoused Americans live. In reality, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s 2024 Point-in-Time (PIT) count shows a different picture: 65% of unhoused people live in shelters or transitional housing, not on the streets. 53% are employed, 34% are in families with children, and 8% are survivors of
domestic violence. These are the bus drivers, baristas, home health aides, and other low wage workers that keep our communities running smoothly. Yes, we have a mental health and a substance abuse crisis in America and the homeless experience these challenges at a higher rate than the rest of the population. 18% of the unhoused have a serious mental illness and 14.6% a chronic substance abuse issue according to the 2024 PIT count. However, these issues are not the root causes of homelessness – housing instability and poverty are.
The second truth: hard work is no longer enough The long-cherished belief that anyone who works hard can succeed no longer holds true for millions of Americans. A 2023 United Way study found that 29% of households fall into the category of ALICE – Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These 38 million working households earn more than the federal poverty level but still cannot cover basic needs. Another 3 million households live below the poverty line despite working. In 2023, 47 million Americans – including 14 million children – were food insecure, often relying on charitable food pantries to eat.

The gap between wages and the cost of living, particularly housing, continues to widen. According to the U.S. Treasury, from 2000 to 2020, home prices and rents rose faster than incomes in more than 90% of U.S. counties. Most communities simply lack affordable housing for lowerwage workers, leaving millions just one crisis – a job loss, a medical bill, or the death of a wage earner – away from homelessness.
The third truth: resources are inadequate The notion that America spends generously on services for the unhoused is a myth. In 2024, the PIT count identified 771,480 homeless individuals, yet there were only 592,628 shelter and transitional beds – a nationwide shortfall of more than 175,000. Similar gaps exist in access to healthcare, mental health support, addiction treatment, and employment services. Communities with the fewest resources tend to have the most visible homelessness, making it easier to blame the individuals sleeping on our streets rather than press our leaders for systemic solutions. Yet solutions exist and have been proven: expanding affordable housing, supporting employment, and providing long-term services for those with greater needs. These approaches are not only more humane but also more cost-effective than allowing people to cycle
through shelters, emergency rooms, and jails at enormous taxpayer expense. The current Executive Order instead promotes criminalization, suggesting that mass detention is the way to restore order. But homelessness is not a crime. Common sense tells us that we should use our limited resources to build shelters and housing rather than detention facilities. We should be especially concerned about the federal government criminalizing poverty and homelessness while it simultaneously cuts funding for Medicaid, SNAP, and Section 8 – cuts that will only drive more American families into poverty and ultimately onto the streets. The Executive Order does get one thing right: people should not be living on the streets of the United States. But to solve the crisis, we must see it clearly. Our neighbors’ homelessness is not a result of their character flaws or personal failures; it is the result of our policy choices. If we have the courage to face this truth, we have the power to end this blight on the American landscape.
The Westchester Collaboration for Compassion The Collaboration for Compassion is a collective – led by the Sisters of Divine Compassion – that brings together faith-based, nonprofit, corporate, business, government, educational and other constituencies to share resources in an effort to extend compassion in the communities we serve.

27th Annual Divine Compassion Golf C
Sr. Marie Cecile Larizza, Patty Memoli, Golf Classic Eagle Sponsor Gwen Fisher and Golf Committee Member Barbara Paonessa
The 2025 Divine Compassion Golf Classic & Dinner Reception was a delightful celebration of Sr. Mary Felicitas Russell, RDC! With the weather on our side again this year, golfers arrived early and energized! There was an exuberant spirit throughout the day and evening that reflected the charism and charisma of our dear Sr. Felicitas. As golfers returned from the course and dinner guests from around the country “returned home” to celebrate Sr. Felicitas, the joy that Sister emanates was felt by one and all. It was wonderful to celebrate and honor our Sr. Felicitas for her 66 years as an RDC! For over six decades, Sister has served her beloved RDC Community as a college administrator and Residence Hall Director at Good Counsel College, College of White Plains and Pace Law School. Sister was also the Co-Director of the Divine Compassion Spirituality Center and worked on several community-based service projects in Dover Plains and Goshen, N.Y.
2025 Golf Classic Honoree Sister Mary Felicitas, with her family members, Stapley Russell, Sammie Didda, Mrs. Colette Russell, Chris Russell, Nicole Didda, Monique Brown, Charles Russell
With little intention to retire any time soon, Sr. Felicitas is currently the Hospitality Coordinator on the RDC Advancement Team, a member of the Golf Classic Committee and the RDC Sacristan, coordinating liturgies, reunions, weddings and funeral Masses at the Chapel of the Divine Compassion. If that is not enough to keep her busy, Sister also volunteers with Lifting Up Westchester, soup kitchens and shelters. At Wartburg, where Sr. Felicitas lives among 20 other RDCs, she volunteers for special events, various projects, and helped to create an in-house store where residents can shop for amenities. Sr. Felicitas is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Mansion on Broadway’s Social Club, dedicated to raising funds for those in need. A born networker, Sister has touched countless lives, which was evident by the sold out number of golfers and dinner guests in attendance at this year’s event. Wherever she goes and whomever she meets, she becomes a quick friend, finding ways to build community and help individuals any way she can.

Sisters Laura Donovan, Felicitas Russell with Sr. Felicitas’ cousinAnthony DeLuca
With her treasured family and friends gathered in one room, Sr. Felicitas did not miss the opportunity to thank her beloved RDC Community, family members and dear friends for the impact they have had on her life. Sister brought the house down with her reference to us all being an important link in the chain of compassion, caring for each other and those in need.

f Classic & Dinner Reception Thanks to the generosity and support of so many, this year’s event set a new record, raising over $178,000 in net proceeds for the care and support of our Sisters and the Divine Compassion mission. The culmination of the evening was a testimonial provided by Golf Committee member, Betsy Post and her sister, Rev. Suzanne (Suzy) Post. The Post sisters shared their family’s experience with housing insecurity and how the Sisters of the Divine Compassion lifted them up and provided a home and familial support at a very distressing time in their lives. As they expressed their gratitude for the impact the Sisters had and continue to have on their lives, Betsy and Suzy encouraged dinner guests to donate what they could to help the Sisters purchase a safe and reliable vehicle that can accommodate the Sisters’ medical equipment and transport more than one Sister at a time to doctors appointments. The Paddle Raise was an overwhelming success, and the Sisters purchased the vehicle in January 2026.
Sr. Blanche Haughey, Golf Classic Committee Member, Jeannie Gaston, Sr. Mary Alice O’Brien and Golf Classic Dinner Sponsor Tom Devine
Reflecting on the festivities and remarkable support she and the RDC Community continue to receive, Sr. Felicitas expressed, “It was an occasion of felicitations that I will never forget! We are blessed and most appreciative to all who contributed to the success of the event.” RDC President, Sr. Laura Donovan added, “Each year, the Divine Compassion Golf Classic & Dinner Reception is a wonderful gathering of true friends we are very blessed to have in our lives. We continue to be humbled and very grateful for your friendship and most generous support. In a special way, I salute our fantastic Golf Classic & Dinner Reception Committee. They are our partners in mission and the engine that keeps this event accelerating!”

*Extraordinary One-Time revenue is mostly derived from the sale of the property at 2780 Schurz Avenue, Bronx, NY. As forecasted by our actuarial studies, a negative gap continues to grow as our expenses exceed our traditional sources of income from Sisters’ salaries, Social Security and pensions, grants and more. In 2025, the Divine Compassion Community budgeted for a projected loss of $2.2 million. The one-time occurrence of the sale of the property mentioned above helped with the operating deficit for this year; however, it is not guaranteed to be enough to provide for the remaining Sisters, longterm. Additionally, as Sisters age, they require different levels of assisted care in appropriate living facilities. In 2025, twenty Sisters were living in some form of assisted care accommodation. We are very grateful to you, our loyal donors, for your faithful support and generosity. With your help, we can minimize the growing gap and continue to care for our Sisters as they age in mission and in community with other Sisters.

Jubilarians
The Sisters of the Divine Compassion joyfully celebrate five of our Sisters celebrating their 70th and 60th Jubilees. As certified teachers, administrators, counselors, therapists, spiritual advisors and more, our Sisters have shared their unique and personal gifts with children, teens, adults, families and communities at all levels of education, administration, health services and social service platforms.
70th Jubilarian
Sister Betty Ann Clifford (Formerly Sr. Mary Kenneth) The expression, “She is a child’s delight,” could aptly describe Sister Betty Ann Clifford, known to many as Sr. Mary Kenneth, as she celebrates her 70th Jubilee as a Sister of the Divine Compassion (RDC) this year. Originally introduced to the RDCs when she was a student at Preston High School in the Bronx, Sr. Betty Ann fondly remembers her days there, especially the love and support from the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, as well as the close friends she still has from that time. Sr. Betty Ann earned a Bachelor’s degree in education from Good Counsel College and a Master’s degree in education from Indiana University. Sister also holds certifications in education from Fairfield University, Kutztown University, College of New Rochelle and New York State. Sr. Betty Ann began her ministry in education, which she refers to as “a glorious gift in her life,” teaching second grade at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (OLMC) in Elmsford. Following OLMC, Sister taught first and fourth graders at St. Mary’s in Katonah. There she met, taught and remains friends with numerous students and their families from her time there. For Sr. Betty Ann, returning to Preston High School to teach was an incredible joy. While at Preston, Sister taught ninth graders and prepared juniors for the PSAT testing. During that time, Sr. Betty Ann also taught 5-year-olds at the Cardinal McCloskey Center, which later became Catholic Charities. For several years, Sister also served as the RDC Vocation Director, helping interested young people to consider joining the Sisters of the Divine Compassion. While living at St. Frances de Chantal, she began a community program for the elderly. After 10 years in her beloved Bronx community, Sr. Betty Ann transferred to Green Chimneys, a school in Brewster, NY, widely recognized as a worldwide leader in animal-assisted therapy and in educational activities for children with special needs. In addition to her wonderful years in the classroom, Sr. Betty Ann also spent summers in Harlem, New York, as a participant in Summer in the City, an Archdiocesan anti-poverty program for people in need. Working in Appalachia was another highlight in Sr. Betty Ann’s life. In the hollows of Williamsburg, Kentucky, Sr. Betty Ann, along with other Sisters and teens from our high schools, spent several summers interacting with the hardworking mountain people. Through daily prayer, planned lessons and a variety of organized activities, their goal was to enable the rural teens and children to realize that there could be a better life for them. Sr. Betty Ann is a talented guitar player and photographer. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching her students pop hits of the 1960s and 1970s, including the musical soundtrack from Sound of Music, one of her favorite movies.

Sr. Betty Ann is grateful to God for her family, her calling to religious life, and for the countless memories of “her children and their families” at Divine Compassion schools. Reflecting upon her entrance into the Convent, Sr. Betty Ann remembers thinking that she would know whether or not it was the right decision for her within a few weeks. That was 70 years ago. Sr. Betty Ann feels blessed and privileged to be a Sister of the Divine Compassion for seven decades.
70th Jubilarian
Sister Jane Keegan (Formerly Sr. Mary de la Salle) With the help of God’s grace, Sister Jane Keegan celebrates her 70th Jubilee with deep gratitude, reflecting on a life of ministry shaped by experiences she could never have imagined or planned. For this native of the Bronx, the Sisters of the Divine Compassion have been a vital presence in her life since she attended grade school at St. Frances de Chantal, then Preston High School and eventually Good Counsel College where she graduated as an English major. Sr. Jane later earned a Master’s degree in Theology/Religious Education from Providence College. Sister also earned several postgraduate certifications in teaching, religious studies, film study, and human relations. Sr. Jane’s ministry began at St. Lawrence O’Toole in Brewster where she taught first grade for five years. Her transition from teaching first graders to high school seniors at Our Lady of Good Counsel Academy (GCA) was a shift Sr. Jane found both challenging and energizing. At GCA, her role expanded beyond the classroom to include serving as Head of the AV Department, teaching film study, directing plays, and for five summers, participating in Summer in the City, an Archdiocesan anti-poverty program in Harlem, NY, an experience that moved her deeply. After six years at GCA, Sr. Jane was re-assigned to John F. Kennedy High School in Somers, with its co-ed environment offering a completely different dynamic. Adapting quickly, Sr. Jane served as Head of the Religion Department and Director of the Drama Club. Sr. Jane fondly remembers all of the wonderful musical productions at both GCA and Kennedy, but especially treasures Camelot. After a decade at Kennedy, Sister Jane’s ministry took a new direction. She interned at William H. Sadlier Publishing Company, Inc. where Sister helped develop a study guide for religion textbooks. Following the internship, Sr. Jane found herself in uncharted waters, having been invited by the Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers to serve in a newly developed position as their Mission Education Coordinator. In that capacity, Sr. Jane traveled extensively, giving diocesan workshops and helping educators integrate social justice concepts into their existing curricula. Sister eventually returned to Sadlier, where she served as a copy editor for print and online publications. While there, Sr. Jane also launched an online newsletter for teachers. Recognizing her diverse experience, the Sisters of the Divine Compassion invited Sr. Jane to work for the RDC Community, first as a grant writer, and later in planning events. As the Associate Director of Development and External Relations, Sr. Jane played a key role in strengthening community engagement, creating enduring initiatives such as the RDC Golf Classic, the Mother Mary Veronica Legacy Society, and the Good Counsel College/College of White Plains annual Reunions. In addition, Sr. Jane initiated annual pilgrimages to foreign countries, guiding groups to destinations that included the Holy Land, Fatima, and Italy to name a few. She also served on the RDC Leadership Team. Even in retirement, Sr. Jane remains actively involved in community life. She helped launch Founders’ Day of Giving, the RDC’s first online fundraising campaign, is a Golf Classic Committee member, and contributes to several Advancement efforts. Sister is a member of the RDC Social Justice Board, and volunteers at Wartburg, where she lives. Sr. Jane enjoys spending time with family and friends, hosting patio parties, and playing Words with Friends online, though often losing games to her former students. Above all, Sister Jane is grateful to God for her vocation as a Sister of the Divine Compassion, not only for the wonderful experiences, but also for the incredible people she has had the privilege to know through her varied ministries.

Sister Anne Kniphuisen As Sr. Anne Kniphuisen celebrates her 70th Jubilee this year, she gives thanks for a ministry enriched by the children she taught and the people she met who became her extended family. Raised in Queens, New York, Sr. Anne attended St. Mary’s Elementary School in Flushing. When it was time for high school, Sister chose Preston in the Bronx – a decision she continues to cherish. Inspired by the joy, warmth and devotion of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, Sister decided to enter the Convent following graduation. Sister earned her Bachelors degree in English/Education at Good Counsel College and her Master’s degree in education from St. Bonaventure University. Sr. Anne also holds certifications in education from Fairfield University, Western Connecticut University and New York State. Sr. Anne’s ministry in elementary education spans five decades! Following Sister’s initial assignment teaching third and fourth grades at Our Lady of Sorrows in White Plains, Sister taught first grade at Sacred Heart, St. Lawrence O’Toole and St. John the Evangelist in Mahopac, N.Y. Sister also taught kindergarten and music at St. Francis Xavier. For forty years, Sr. Anne served as first-grade teacher and later as Assistant Principal at St. John’s in Mahopac, nurturing three generations of students. Sister helped prepare second graders for their First Holy Communion, seventh graders for Confirmation and provided one-on-one religious education to children with special needs. Sr. Anne oversaw the glee club and school plays, and if that was not enough, Sister managed the after-school program and the CCD religious education curriculum. To those who attended St. John’s, Sr. Anne was—and remains—family. Alongside Sr. Judith Henchey (RIP), she was a cornerstone of the community, supporting children and their families through life’s joys and challenges with unwavering faith and love. Among her favorite memories of St. John’s are the Christmas plays, the glee club concerts, dances, St. Patrick’s Day parades, CYO, first Friday Masses, and the annual May Crowning Liturgy and Ceremony. Sr. Anne’s greatest pleasures include spending time with family and friends at the beach, Thanksgiving dinner with the Tierneys, a good game of scrabble with her Sisters, and the sweet treat of an ice cold Pepsi and Boston cream donut. Reflecting on her 70 years as a Sister of the Divine Compassion, Sr. Anne smiles thinking of all the fun she has had. She is grateful for her life as an RDC and the wonderful and close friends that continue to share their love and families with her. She prays that she has spread the same joy she first experienced when she met the Sisters of the Divine Compassion as a teenager.

60th Jubilarian Sister M. Doretta Cornell A ministry defined by peace, love, and justice, Sister Doretta celebrates her 60th Jubilee this year. Hailing from the Bronx, New York, Sister attended St. Frances of Rome Elementary School and St. Barnabas High School. Sr. Doretta earned her Bachelor’s degree in English from Good Counsel College, her Master’s in American Literature from Fordham University and a Doctorate in Modern Literature from University of Missouri-Columbia. Sr. Doretta also holds professional certifications in teaching, training and social change workshops. Sister began her ministry in high school education at Good Counsel Academy and Preston High Schools. After six years of teaching in high school, Sr. Doretta transitioned to higher education as an adjunct instructor, professor and faculty leader at the University of Missouri-Columbia, College of New Rochelle, Good Counsel College, College of White Plains and Pace University. While at Pace, Sister chaired the Faculty Council of the Arts & Sciences and served on the Sisters of the Divine Compassion’s Leadership Team for eight years. Always engaged in social justice issues, Sr. Doretta earned certifications in Nonviolent Action for Change and Creating a Culture of Peace trainings. Sister volunteered with the United Nation’s Partnership for Global Justice, leading workshops on Creating a Culture of Peace and serving as the editor of their newsletter. In 2017, the United Nations Non-Governmental Organization (UN NGO) honored Sr. Doretta with the Peace and Justice Award for her passion, dedication and perseverance in creating a more just and peaceful world. In particular, Sister was recognized for her longstanding advocacy for the environment. When the Sisters of the Divine Compassion began to expand their ministries outside of education, Sr. Doretta joined and eventually chaired the RDC Community’s Social Justice Board. Sister continues in that role today. In 2009, Sr. Doretta was trained as a Green Faith Fellow. This program prepares lay and ordained leaders from diverse faith traditions for religiously based environmental leadership. Throughout the years, Sr. Doretta’s love of literature has remained strong. After attending a workshop in poetry, Sister started to write extensively, both in prose and poetry. Sister led several workshops in poetry at the Greenburgh Library and was an active member of the Poetry Caravan. Established in 2003, the Poetry Caravan is a volunteer organization that brings original poetry readings and workshops to community venues like senior centers, libraries, and hospitals. As a “poetry on the road” initiative, it serves to make poetry accessible to diverse, often underserved audiences. Now retired and living at Wartburg with 20 of our Sisters, Sr. Doretta enjoys spending time with her nieces and nephews and their families, and remains dedicated to advocating on behalf of underserved populations and the environment.

Sister M. Cecile Larizza Principal at Our Lady of Sorrows School (OLS) in White Plains for 41 years, Sister M. Cecile Larizza celebrates her 60th Jubilee as a Sister of the Divine Compassion this year. A lifelong Westchester County resident, Sr. Cecile attended St. Thomas Elementary School in Pleasantville and St. Mary’s High School, in Katonah. After high school she attended junior college at Elizabeth Seton in Yonkers, where she graduated with an Associate degree in music. Sister later earned her Bachelor’s degree in music and elementary education from Good Counsel College and her Master’s degree in reading and education from the College of New Rochelle. Additionally, Sr. Ceil holds certifications in school administration from Manhattan College and New York State. Sr. Ceil’s ministry in education began at OLS in 1970. She was not only the first grade teacher, but taught music to all eight grades as well. A talented musician who plays several instruments, Sister also prepared students to sing at Mass, and accompanied them on guitar. Sister was moderator of the glee club and music director of the school plays. After eight years at OLS, Sister also took on the responsibilities of Assistant Principal and served in that position for seven years before accepting the role of Principal at OLS in 1985. Now serving three generations of families, children currently attending OLS are the grandchildren of some of Sr. Ceil’s original first grade students. After four decades at the helm, Sr. Ceil is proud of the strong and innovative academic curriculum that continues at OLS, but equally prioritizes the development of each student’s character, educating and graduating students that are good people with a strong work ethic. In addition to being a dedicated educator and school administrator, Sr. Ceil is a talented athlete. Sister played second base and centerfield for the Nun Better softball team for several years. An avid golfer, Sr. Ceil is a member of the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association and the Women’s Tri-County Golf Association. Sister won the Club Championship at Westchester Hills Golf Club for several years. If that is not enough, Sr. Ceil is also a talented seamstress. Taught by Sr. Mary Marcella in the Convent, Sr. Ceil made all the habits for her group, eventually expanding her expertise to making all kinds of costumes for the school plays, as well as Halloween. Sr. Ceil continues to enjoy golf and spending time with friends and family. Reflecting on the last six decades as a Religious of the Divine Compassion, Sr. Ceil shares, “The most rewarding thing in my 60 years as an RDC has been the opportunity to bring God’s compassion to the numerous lives I’ve had the privilege to touch - families, friends and most especially the children.”

In Memoriam
We remember with love each of these women, our Sisters and friends, who passed away in 2025. We celebrate their lives and the example they offered to the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, their families, friends, students and the whole world. They each embraced the call to live compassionate lives. May they rest in the arms of the loving God they so faithfully served.
Sister Lucille Coldrick, RDC (Formerly Sr. Mary Compassio) October 29, 1936 – July 3, 2025
Sister Lucille Coldrick, a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion for nearly 66 years, died peacefully on July 3, 2025 at St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Sr. Lucille was born in New York City on October 29, 1936. She entered the Sisters of the Divine Compassion on September 3, 1959 and made final vows on March 30, 1967. Sr. Lucille earned her Bachelor’s degree in History from Good Counsel College in 1958 and her Master’s degree from Fordham University in 1967. She began her ministry as history teacher at Good Counsel Academy and remained in that position until 1976. During that time, Sr. Lucille was also the Director of Novices, responsible for the formation of new Sisters. Sr. Lucille began a nine-month Apostolic Religious Communities (ARC) program headquartered in Rome, Italy in 1976. While in Europe, Sister visited Greece, France, Austria, Israel and what was then the USSR. Her letters home are a rich combination of the sociology, politics and theology of the places she traveled, several brief biographies of some of the people she encountered, and travel brochure-worthy descriptions of the sights, sounds, smells and feel of it all. After Sr. Lucille’s return to the U.S., she was an adjunct professor and administrator at Pace University and served on three Congregational Leadership Teams. Sr. Lucille was admired for her standards of excellence and professionalism as an educator and administrator. Under Sister’s leadership as principal of Our Lady of Good Counsel Academy High School (1978-1985) and Preston High School (1991-2008), both high schools were well-known for their academic excellence and the spirit of compassion that permeated each one. Sr. Lucille was gracious, pleasant and unfailingly polite. She had the gift of providing her undivided attention to whomever she was speaking with in any given situation. While “outdoorsy” might not come to mind when describing Sr. Lucille, she once listed her interests as “running, cycling and aerobic dancing.” Over the years the running, cycling and aerobics did fall by the wayside, but her love of reading, music, the ballet and especially her love of the opera endured. Sr. Lucille loved the Sisters of the Divine Compassion. In her application for entrance into the Congregation, she wrote about being drawn to the Spirit of the Divine Compassion, as she witnessed it among the Sisters and her conviction that she was being called to live it. In a conversation a few years ago about the Congregational name, she remarked, “After all these years, it still takes my breath away!” For Sr. Lucille and those that knew her, it was a lived reality.
We lovingly remember our faithful RDC Associates who passed away in 2025.
Rose Falco Mary Goveia May they rest in the arms of our loving God. 24

Sister returned to full time study in 1985, earning a Master’s of Science degree from St. John’s University and Pace University in Math and Computer Science, respectively. She also received a Graduate Fellowship in Computer Science from Pace University. From 1998 to 2002, Sister Pat worked in higher education at Pace University and at Dominican College in Blauvelt, NY. When Sr. Pat had the opportunity to take a well-earned retirement in 2002, she opted instead to place her considerable math and computer skills at the service of the Divine Compassion Congregation in the finance office, where she served as Assistant Director of Finance. She retired only when she was unable to make the trip from the Bronx to White Plains, NY. Sr. Pat was an avid reader, talented seamstress and a loyal New York Yankees fan. Sister’s gift to her Sisters, friends and colleagues was an unassuming presence that was deeply appreciated. She was a woman of few words who spoke from experience and wisdom.
Sister Patricia Smith, RDC (Formerly, Sr. Mary Campion) August 30, 1936 – September 7, 2025
Sister Patricia Smith, a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion for 70 years, died peacefully at Cabrini Nursing Home on September 7, 2025. Sr. Pat, known as Treesh to just about everyone, was born in New York on August 30, 1936 to Thomas and Florence Smith. Sister entered the Sisters of the Divine Compassion on September 3, 1955 and made final vows on April 18, 1963. Sr. Pat earned her Bachelor’s degree in History from Good Counsel College in 1962 and her Master’s degree in Gerontology from the College of New Rochelle in 1996. This year marked Sr. Pat’s 70th year in religious life. Her ministry in elementary education spanned more than 30 years. Warmly remembered as Sr. Mary Campion by her former students, Sister taught second through eighth grade children at St. Frances de Chantal in the Bronx for 23 years, as well as Blessed Sacrament in Manhattan, Our Lady of Sorrows in White Plains, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Elmsford and St. Joseph’s in Croton Falls. During her summers, Sr. Pat often volunteered at the Dwelling Place, a women’s shelter in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City. She was also active in Summer in the City, an Archdiocesan anti-poverty program in the 1960s, which provided enrichment opportunities for youth in Harlem. In 1991, Treesh became the first Senior Services Coordinator at the RDC Motherhouse, Good Counsel, a role she held until her retirement. It was in this position that all her prior ministerial experience came together in a presence that held patience, humor, attentiveness, tenderness, and honesty. Throughout her life, Sr. Pat enjoyed singing. She directed glee clubs at each school where she taught. Her soaring soprano always enhanced the Sisters’ choir. She was also part of the Sisters’ group that cut its very own vinyl record, still enjoyed by the RDC Staff ! In life and in her ministries, Sr. Pat remained, as she put it “a F.R.O.G. – Fully Reliant on God!”
