No princípio seriam uns quantos desenhos mesmo só de modelo nu, talvez mesmo só a carvão, sem disfarce da vontade de um olhar zombeteiro e de través sobre as muitas contemporâneas academias e os seus curadores sempre tão zelosos de categorias e exclusões.

Mas depois, e em verdade, como sempre me interessou tão pouco aquilo que os outros dizem ou fazem, nem sequer é interessante questionar ou estar contra, e sendo assim, então a mim os meus desenhos e a cada um, eu incluído, o inferno possível.

28 desenhos feitos velozmente, sem arrependimentos ou regressos, o olhar a direito, cinco noites e um dia com mais horas do que habitualmente e Kurt Weil e também o Requiem da criança de Salzburg, morta antes do tempo, acho eu.

As linhas do corpo como as da régua e do compasso, as manchas das tintas diversas como as colagens e os cortes sobre o papel, os dedos como o lápis ou os pincéis, tudo como se pudesse continuar a haver sempre uma primeira vez, como na primeira vez, o mesmo rigor do olhar de dentro que vê o desenho chegar e espraiar-se antes de o papel imaculado vir a sabê-lo.

Já passa do meio do dia e enquanto escrevo estas linhas a ramagem das oliveiras, alta sobre a minha cabeça, rumoreja suavemente com a brisa que vem do sul, do mar ali ao fundo, e pressenti agora que também estes desenhos vêm assim de um qualquer lugar como este, de horas quietas.

quiet hours

In the beginning they were supposed to be a few drawings, probably no more than nude studies, perhaps simply done with charcoal, openly displaying a mocking, lopsided view of the many contemporary academies and their curators, ever so zealous of their categories and exclusions.

But then, the fact is that I was always so little interested in what other people do or say that I found no interest in questioning or opposing such things; this being so, then let me have my drawings and let each one, myself included, have their own possible hell.

28 drawings done quickly, without regrets or backtracking, gazing straight ahead, five nights and one day with more hours than usual and Kurt Weil and the Requiem for the Salzburg child, who died before its time, I think.

The lines of the body are like the lines made by ruler and compass, the paint blotches as varied as paper collages and cut-outs, fingers are used like pencils or brushes, everything as if there could always be a first time, just like the first time, the same precise inner gaze that sees the drawing approach and unfold itself even before the immaculate paper becomes aware of it.

It is already past noon, and as I write these lines the olive-tree branches high above my head murmur softly in the breeze that blows from the south, from the sea in the distance, and suddenly I sense that these drawings, too, come from some place like this one, a place of quiet hours.
