Em 2018, o Art Cycles acolhe luzazul, de Miguel Soares. Resultado da residência artística realizada no âmbito do mecenato da sonae, o artista, pioneiro em arte digital, traz ao Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea uma proposta perturbadora.

Por coincidência, no ano em que se cumprem dois séculos sobre a publicação de Frankenstein, de Mary Shelley, Miguel Soares atualiza uma das questões centrais do romance, referente ao poder da ciência e aos seus limites éticos. Misturando fotografia, vídeo e tecnologias digitais, Miguel Soares propõe-nos um percurso sobre o nosso passado, presente e futuro com o mundo das máquinas que criámos e havemos de criar, e levanta-nos uma questão: substituída a mão de obra humana pelo gesto mais certeiro e monótono do robô, o poder da máquina veio aliviar o esforço humano; mas, e se as crescentes potencialidades da inteligência artificial ameaçarem o que cremos ter de único? Mais: e se essas construções binárias passarem a ter consciência e iniciarem, no processo, a exigência à simetria dos seus deveres, reivindicando direitos?

A ficção vem há muito abrindo caminho a estas inquietações. Recentemente, a série televisiva Westworld colocou a hipótese de o sofrimento conseguir, eventualmente, espoletar processos mais complexos de memória (mesmo na artificial) e de rebelião contra uma ordem imposta unilateralmente pelos humanos aos seus complexos joguetes. Porém, sem precisar de criar um parque temático para abordar essas questões, Miguel Soares traz a pergunta para o quotidiano e arrisca uma possibilidade diversa. E se, sobretudo, ultrapassado o medo, o futuro construído em diálogo se revelar um lugar melhor para todos? É essa utopia, em poética e poderosa contramão com as comuns visões distópicas, que se nos abre agora, na proposta inspiradora de luzazul.

In 2018, Art Cycles is pleased to present luzazul, by Miguel Soares. A result of the artist residency carried out under sonae sponsorship, the artist, a pioneer in digital art, brings to the National Museum of Contemporary Art a disconcerting proposal. Coincidentally, in the year that marks two centuries since the publication of Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, Miguel Soares modernises one of the central themes in the novel, with respect to the power of science and its ethical boundaries. Combining photography, video and digital technology, Miguel Soares proposes an itinerary through our past, present and future with the world of machines that we have created and will create, and raises the question: once the human workforce has been substituted by the more accurate and uniform movement of robots, the power of machines will have relieved human effort; but what if the growing capacities of artificial intelligence begin to threaten what we believe makes us unique? Moreover: what if these binary constructions acquire a conscience and, in the process, start to demand equal responsibilities and rights?

For a long time, fiction has been clearing the way for these concerns. Recently, the television series Westworld formulated the hypothesis that suffering will eventually trigger more complex processes of memory (even in artificial intelligence) and rebellion against an order unilaterally imposed by humans on their complex toys. Without needing to create a theme park to address these issues, Miguel Soares brings this question into everyday life and raises a different possibility. What if, once we overcome our fears, the future constructed through dialogue turns out to be a better place for everybody? It is this utopia, in poetic and powerful opposition to the common dystopian visions, that constitutes luzazul’s inspiring proposal.

We would like to extend our recognition and gratitude to Miguel Soares and Sonae. In exhibitions, as in visions of the future, construction through dialogue is always more fruitful.

Porque o futuro é real Palíndromos, robôs e as três idades do homem Because the future is real Palindromes, robots and the three ages of man

A de l a ide Ging a Luzazul é um palíndromo composto por duas palavras, Luz e Azul, que, juntas, se podem ler tanto da direita para a esquerda como da esquerda para a direita. A escolha destas duas palavras prende-se com a luz da tecnologia que domina o mundo de hoje e o conceito de espelho, metonímia de amplitude em desenvolvimento contínuo, presentes neste trabalho de Miguel Soares. Este projecto é o culminar de um percurso artístico dedicado à reflexão e à conceptualização do mundo real versus virtual, e vem na senda de outros trabalhos como 2048, de 2016, mas também da série Palindrome, de 2007. A problematização de assuntos extemporâneos que ainda não entraram na preocupação da sociedade em geral, nomeadamente a questão do imparável desenvolvimento da Inteligência Artificial e da presença crescente dos robôs na sociedade, levou Miguel Soares a assumir, uma vez mais, uma posição vanguardista, ao antecipar-se na interpretação artística dessa realidade.

O azul é uma cor fria, associada à tranquilidade, à ordem e à harmonia, capaz de produzir um efeito de relaxamento, quase analgésico, ao mesmo tempo que nos mantém acordados. Pálido Ponto Azul, foi como Carl Sagan identificou o nosso planeta visto dos limites do sistema solar, em 1994, e azul é também a aparente cor do céu durante a maior parte dos dias, a cor sem pigmento da atmosfera que nos envolve, pelo que é, consequentemente, uma cor com que nos identificamos facilmente, que nos dá segurança e horizonte. Perguntava Clarice Lispector: «Azul será uma cor em si, ou uma questão de distância?»

Com a revolução tecnológica, a luz de espectro azul emitida pelos aparelhos electrónicos do nosso quotidiano – ecrãs de smartphones, computadores, iPads, televisões, etc. – passou a ter uma presença constante nas nossas vidas. Considerada a mais energética da luz visível para o ser humano, a radiação da luz azul, que domina o mundo actual, pode ser nociva para o ser humano, quando a exposição for excessiva, o que não acontece obviamente com os robôs, imunes a tal efeito.

Luzazul is a palindrome made up of two words, “Azul” [Blue] and “Luz” [Light], which, together, can be read either from right to left or from left to right. The choice of these two words relates to the light of the technology that dominates today’s world and the concept of a mirror, a metonym for amplitude in continuous development, which has a strong presence in Miguel Soares work. This project is the culmination of an artistic career dedicated to the reflection and conceptualisation of the real versus the virtual world, and is continuance of previous work such as 2048, from 2016, and the series Palindrome, from 2007. The problematisation of extemporaneous issues that have not yet become a concern for society in general, namely the question of the unstoppable evolution of Artificial Intelligence and the growing presence of robots in society, led Miguel Soares to once again assume an avant-garde position and to be a pioneer in the artistic interpretation of this reality.

Blue is a cold colour, associated with tranquillity, order and harmony. It can have a relaxing, almost analgesic effect, while also keeping us awake. Pale Blue Dot was how Carl Sagan identified our planet as seen from the limits of the solar system in 1994. Blue is also the apparent colour of the sky for most of the days, the pigmentless colour of the atmosphere surrounding us, and is therefore a colour with that we can easily identify with, one that gives us a sense of security and perspective. Clarice Lispector asked, “Is blue a colour itself, or a matter of distance?” With the technological revolution, the blue spectrum light emitted by our everyday electronic devices – the screens of smartphones, computers, iPads, televisions, etc. –, is now a constant presence in our lives. Considered to be the most energetic light visible to humans, excessive exposure to the radiation of the blue light that dominates today’s world can be damaging to humans, something that obviously does not happen with robots, which are immune to this effect.

Por outro lado, o conceito de palíndromo está ligado à ideia de imagem espelhada, consequentemente, de reflexo, sendo que o reflexo só é possível por meio da luz e o conceito de espelho está ligado a vários significados, como o conhecimento e a própria existência. Palíndromo ganha, neste projecto, o conceito inerente de abstracção e de extensão do real para outra dimensão inédita.

O princípio de espelho ou de reflexo confronta-nos com a imagem invertida e o prolongamento infinito em série de algo, criando uma dinâmica sequencial multiperspectívica que impõe novos considerandos. Segundo Lacan, o «estágio do espelho» traduz, precisamente, o modo como a imago é mediatária na relação do homem com o mundo: «A função do estágio do espelho revela-se […] como um caso particular da função da imago, que é estabelecer uma relação do organismo com sua realidade [...]»1. O reflexo do outro à sua semelhança é um estádio de consciência e desenvolvimento do ser humano, 1. On the other hand, the concept of palindrome is linked to the idea of a mirror image and therefore of reflection. Reflection is only possible through light and the concept of a mirror has various connotations, including knowledge and even existence.

In this project, palindrome acquires the inherent concept of abstraction and the extension of reality into a new dimension.

The principle of a mirror or of reflection presents us with an inverted image and the infinite extension of something in a series, creating a multiperspective sequential dynamic that imposes new considerations. According to Lacan, the “mirror stage” refers, precisely, to how the imago is a mediator in people’s relationship with the world: “The function of the mirror state thus turns out [...] to be a particular case of the function of imagos, which is to establish a relationship between an organism and its reality [...]”1. The reflection of the other to its likeness is a state of human consciousness and development, in which the “other” image-object, in spite of similarities, is not their reality, therefore it is necessary to understand the difference between the image of the other and the reality of the other. This is a fundamental issue when talking about robots, which are becoming increasingly more like human beings.

In The Essay as Form, Theodor Adorno develops a critical and self-reflective theory of modernity, exploring the failure of pre-established conventions, the elaboration of new epistemological narratives and the shift of traditional aesthetic paradigms. In luzazul, Miguel Soares expands on Adorno’s essay and presents a new dimension of alter-reality, which calls into question the identity of all that is pre-established and somewhat stagnant, based on principles of religion, myth and other means of transcendence. This is the basis Miguel Soares uses to introduce to us a generational world of machines, which drifts between reality and fiction and confronts us with the issue of the constant advance of technology, proposing an opening of perspectives and infinite ways of rethinking the world around us.

This theoretical foundation is combined with the experience of almost 30 years of artistic practice, resulting in a conceptually futuristic project of technical excellence in the field of 1. em que o «outro» imagem-objecto, apesar das semelhanças, não é o seu real, o que exige a necessidade de compreender a diferença entre a imagem do outro e a realidade do outro. Esta é uma demanda fundamental quando falamos de robôs que, cada vez mais, ganham a forma de seres humanos.

Em O Ensaio como Forma, Theodor Adorno desenvolve um pensamento auto-reflexivo e crítico da modernidade, explorando a falência das convenções preestabelecidas, a elaboração de novas narrativas epistemológicas e a mudança de paradigmas estéticos tradicionais. Miguel Soares distende, em luzazul, o ensaio adorniano e apresenta uma nova dimensão da alter-realidade que põe em causa a identidade do todo preestabelecido e semiestanque, assente em fundamentos religiosos, míticos e outros meios de transcendência. Esta é a base da qual parte Miguel Soares para nos introduzir num mundo geracional de máquinas, que deriva do real para o ficcional, e que nos confronta com a questão do constante avanço tecnológico, propondo uma abertura de perspectivas e de infinitas formas de repensar o mundo que nos envolve.

A esta fundamentação teórica junta-se a experiência de quase trinta anos de prática artística, de que resulta um projecto conceptualmente futurista e de excelência técnica no domínio do hiper-realismo digital. digital hyper-realism. A pioneer in digital arts, Miguel Soares became interested early on in new areas of artistic expression, leading him to distance himself from the traditional courses at the Lisbon Faculty of Fine Arts and opt instead for a degree in Equipment Design, after initial training in photography at Ar.Co. Since then, he has established a practice based on new media, video, photography and sound, progressively combined with the use of new technologies, like computers, the Internet, animation and 3d modelling. His command of technological tools and technical knowledge of three-dimensional forms, together with photographic and cinematographic language, allowed him to develop this project, made up of a set of still images with a digital composition, displayed on light boxes, and of moving images in 3d animation, with musical compositions, displayed on screens and as projections, with scenes illuminated by “real” photos. The exhibition, which is taking place at the mnac, is distributed across five rooms, alternating between photographs and videos. The exhibition follows a chronological order structured around three generations of robots: the first which is already part of our reality, a second that we are currently working towards and a third which is from a utopian order.

Luzazul contains several important references. One of the most inspirational is the prophetic theory of the three ages of man, developed by Joachim of Fiore, an Italian abbot from the 12th century who founded the theory of the three Ages of History or of Man, based on the Holy Scriptures, corresponding

artística, o que o levou a afastar-se dos cursos tradicionais na Faculdade de Belas-Artes de Lisboa e a optar pela licenciatura em Design de Equipamento, após uma formação inicial em fotografia na escola Ar.Co. Desde então, tem estabelecido uma prática assente nos novos media, no vídeo, fotografia e som, em progressivo cruzamento com o uso das novas tecnologias, como o computador, a Internet, a animação e modelação 3d.

O domínio das ferramentas tecnológicas e o conhecimento técnico das formas tridimensionais, em comunhão com a linguagem fotográfica e cinematográfica, permitiu-lhe desenvolver este projecto composto por um conjunto de imagens fixas de composição digital, apresentadas em caixas de luz, e por imagens em movimento, de animação 3d com composições musicais, apresentados em ecrãs e em projecção, com cenas iluminadas por fotos «reais». A exposição, que tem lugar no espaço do mnac, distribui-se ao longo de cinco salas, alternando as fotografias e os vídeos. O percurso da exposição segue uma ordem cronológica que se estrutura em três gerações de robôs: a primeira já faz parte da nossa realidade, uma segunda é para onde se tenta actualmente avançar e a terceira é da ordem da utopia.

B e r nh a r d Se r e x h e The visualisation of information on all kinds of electronic screens has become the predominant cultural technique of our era. This is invariably associated with the rapidly increasing exposure to high-energy visible light, the blue light1, which is more and more superimposing exposure to natural light.

Short-wavelength radiation in the form of blue light emitting monitors accompanies us at every step and turn. Besides of its mostly ignored negative effect on our biological clock, and our well-being, blue light also stands as a metaphor for a new perception of the world, which is both the cause and the result of rapidly developing technologies.

Art opens the doors of perception. Thus luzazul, the palindrome title of this visionary exhibition by Miguel Soares, is merging the boundaries between starting new technologies and an anticipated near future society, in which the functions of man are expected to happily converge with those of the machine. To better understand the future, it might be worth to question the developments and narratives of the past: What, finally, is the origin of this eternal searching and longing of mankind to replace itself by machines? Is it the unwitting refusal to accept the biblical expulsion from paradise, or man’s immanent yearning for death as a redemption? Or is it the happy vision of ultimately overcoming human failure and imperfection by inventing the perfect machine as the superior alter ego of man?

As a matter of fact, the living and breathing likeness of the machine has at all times been at once an object of fascination and a vision of horror. Only the power of the gods can animate Pygmalion’s ivory statue of Galatea and deliver the despondent artist from the pangs of hopeless love.2 According to the Hellenistic writer Polybius (146 bc), the Spartan tyrant

Tal está invariavelmente associado ao rápido aumento da exposição à luz visível de alta energia, a luz azul1, que se sobrepõe cada vez mais à exposição à luz natural. A radiação de baixo comprimento de onda, sob a forma de monitores emissores de luz azul, acompanha-nos a todo o momento. Além de ter efeitos negativos, geralmente ignorados, no nosso relógio biológico e no nosso bem-estar, a luz azul funciona também como metáfora de uma nova percepção do mundo que é, ao mesmo tempo, a causa e o resultado de tecnologias em rápido desenvolvimento.

A arte abre as portas da percepção. luzazul, o palíndromo que dá título a esta exposição visionária de Miguel Soares, dissipa, assim, as fronteiras entre novas tecnologias emergentes e a antecipada sociedade dum futuro próximo, em que se espera que as funções do homem convirjam venturosamente com as da máquina.

Para melhor compreender o futuro, talvez valha a pena questionar os desenvolvimentos e narrativas do passado: Qual é, afinal, a origem desta eterna busca e anseio da humanidade por se fazer substituir por máquinas? Será a recusa inconsciente em aceitar a expulsão bíblica do paraíso, ou o desejo, imanente ao homem, pela morte como redenção? Ou será a visão feliz de uma superação definitiva das falhas e imperfeições humanas, pela invenção da máquina perfeita, enquanto alter ego superior do homem?

Na verdade, a semelhança viva da máquina sempre foi, ao mesmo tempo, objecto de fascínio e visão de horror. Apenas o poder dos deuses consegue animar a estátua de Galateia esculpida por Pigmalião, e salvar o desencorajado artista da angústia do amor impossível.2 Segundo o escritor grego Políbio (146 a.C.), o tirano espartano Nábis (207-192 a.C.) possuía uma dama de ferro feita à imagem de Apega, sua bela mulher, em cujo peito de pregos

Nabis (207–192 bc) had an iron maiden made in the image of his beautiful wife Apega, against whose nail-bristling breast citizens that refused tribute were pressed until they relented or died in its embrace. The helpful Golem, formed by man from clay but exceeding him, collapses upon its alarmed creator when he erases the word of life from the creature’s brow and is buried beneath its weight. The singing and dancing automaton Olimpia lures her love-blind adorer to destruction.3 And finally, the most fascinating visions of modern technology warn us against the uncontrollability of unleashed machines, from the workers subjected to the assembly-line in Chaplin’s Modern Times (usa 1936), through hal 9000 in Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey 4, to the overpowering Matrix 5 which uses plugged-in human beings as cheap energy and simulates for them their brave new world only as a virtual illusion. In the post-industrial era, humanoid automata fuse with industrial robots into the omnipotent cyborg, with the claim to autonomy, intelligence and emotional life. The artificial human being created by Victor Frankenstein becomes a monster because he wants to show his creator how lonely he feels.6 The mechanical female body of the beguiling Kusanagi, in the Japanese anime Ghost in the Shell7, possesses a human brain that is manipulated by the almighty hacker Puppet Master. Since the human brain of the cyborg gives it an identity, it cannot be completely fused with its mechanical body.

And today, not at fiction at all, in the context of Saudi Arabia’s “Future Investment Initiative” in 2017, for the first time, the government of Saudi Arabia officially granted the citizenship to a humanoid female robot named Sophia.8 Celebrating the dawn of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which has happily been proclaimed at the 2016 Davos World Economic Forum as a clear consequence of the ongoing digitization, we are being allured by a very similar promise: the “merging of the boundaries between the physical, digital and biological spheres by means of artificial intelligence, robotics and the Internet of Things, by self-driving cars and new findings of biotechnolo-

Olímpia, o autómato que canta e dança, conduz à destruição o seu adorador, cegado pelo amor.3 E, finalmente, as mais fascinantes visões da tecnologia moderna advertem-nos para a incontrolabilidade das máquinas libertas, desde os trabalhadores submetidos à linha de montagem em Tempos Modernos, de Chaplin (eua, 1936), passando por hal 9000 em 2001: Uma Odisseia no Espaço 4, de Kubrick, até à opressiva Matrix 5, que usa seres humanos ligados à corrente como fonte de energia barata, e simula para estes o seu admirável mundo novo, apenas como ilusão virtual. Na era pós-industrial, autómatos humanóides fundem-se com robôs industriais para formar o ciborgue omnipotente, que reivindica a posse de autonomia, inteligência e vida emocional. O ser artificial criado por Victor Frankenstein torna-se um monstro por querer mostrar ao seu criador o quanto se sente só.6 O corpo mecânico feminino da atraente Kusanagi, no anime japonês Ghost in the Shell7, possui um cérebro humano que é manipulado pelo todo-poderoso hacker Puppet Master. Por o seu cérebro humano lhe conferir uma identidade, a ciborgue é incapaz de se fundir completamente com o seu corpo mecânico.

E chegados aos nossos dias, bem além do mundo da ficção, vemos o governo da Arábia Saudita, no contexto da Future Investment Initiative de 2017, conceder oficialmente, pela primeira vez, a cidadania a um robô humanóide, de aparência feminina, chamado Sophia.8 Ao celebrarmos o início da Quarta Revolução Industrial, alegremente proclamada no Fórum Económico Mundial de Davos 2016 como uma clara consequência do processo de digitalização em curso, estamos a ser seduzidos por uma promessa muito semelhante: a partir da «dissipação das fronteiras entre as esferas física, digital e biológica, por meio da inteligência artificial, da robótica e da Internet das Coisas, dos carros autoguiados e das novas descobertas da biotecnologia», espera-se que seja

gy” is expected to “redefine human being”.9 And also this is not pure phantasy. Notable success has already been achieved through the replacement of human intelligence by algorithmic systems; the long since set in train electronic connection of consumers and their devices in the Internet of Things as the main instrument of the coming economy bases, principally on the deployment of intelligent control algorithms. In having access to the behaviour patterns, which at any moment are provided by ourselves in the form of our digital data as consumers, these algorithms are being coded to control us as prosumers by a direct feedback with behaviour-guiding impulses we are receiving in sync. In this field, the promised “merging of the boundaries” has long taken root. And it is precisely at this interface that our understanding of being human will be redefined. The great allurement of the popular new revolution may consist in finally giving up the humanistic ideal of a self-determined life. By contrast, it seems that machines are striving for autonomy.

Foi já alcançado um sucesso notável, através da substituição da inteligência humana por sistemas algorítmicos: a conexão electrónica, há muito posta em marcha, dos consumidores e seus aparelhos na Internet das Coisas, enquanto instrumento principal das futuras bases económicas, sobretudo na implementação de algoritmos de controlo inteligentes. Ao acederem aos padrões de comportamento que nós próprios fornecemos, a todo o momento, sob a forma dos nossos dados digitais como consumidores, estes algoritmos são codificados para nos controlar enquanto prossumidores, através dum feedback directo com impulsos orientadores de comportamento que recebemos em sincronização. Neste âmbito, a prometida «dissipação das fronteiras» há muito que está enraizada. E é precisamente nesta interface que a nossa compreensão de ser humano irá ser redefinida. O principal fascínio da popular nova revolução poderá consistir no nosso abandono definitivo do ideal humanista de uma vida autodeterminada. Por contraste, as máquinas parecem estar empenhadas em alcançar autonomia.

In the synopsis for luzazul, Miguel Soares recalls the vision of 12th century Italian theologian Joachim of Fiore that only in the third age, the age of the Holy Spirit, mankind would reach total freedom. Soares combines and updates this medieval foresight of a coming new age with the present-day hypothesis of the imminent Technological Singularity. As the next step of sociobiological evolution, this era, anticipated to begin in 2040-50 as the inevitable consequence of an intelligence explosion, is expected to lead to a major evolutionary transition that merges technology, biology, and society.10 As art consciously deals with society, so the complete oeuvre of Miguel Soares is since the early 1990s impregnated with merging the boundaries of present and future. In his brilliantly animated video fiction 204811, we are invited to enter the post-singularity world. Amidst streams of countless self-driving vehicles magically hovering towards unknown destinations, nameless humanoid mannequins – perhaps the last representatives of the human race – are devoutly stretching out their arms towards bright skies for receiving their daily supplies, which are reliably being delivered by myriads of humming drones. The world machine is permanently taking care and nourishing these remaining de-humanised humans without any calling. Nothing is missing, no residues are left, the air is clean forever, no body suffers, no one complains. This world is steeped in pure blue light. It has become indiscernible because what we still call the “world” in our days has transmuted into an infallible omnipresent machine, the ultimate matrix as an inner world without exterior borders.

In his own words, with this animation Soares felt the need “to show a more ‘positive’ and less dystopic view of the future, (but) the end result is more a fake positive future”.12 Comparing it to the expected beneficial effects of the already stated Fourth Industrial Revolution, Soares’ vision can also be understood as a lucid enhancement of Paul Valery’s early vision of perpetual “home delivery of Sensory Reality”, even a century after its publication.13 In Soares’ vison of a fake brave new 10. “Thus the first ultraintelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever make, provided that the machine is docile enough to tell us how to keep it under control.” I. Soares combina e actualiza esta previsão medieval da chegada de uma nova era com a hipótese actual de uma Singularidade Tecnológica iminente. Entre torrentes de incontáveis carros autoguiados pairando magicamente em direcção a destinos desconhecidos, anónimos manequins humanóides – talvez os últimos representantes da raça humana – estendem devotadamente os braços em direcção ao céu radiante, a fim de receberem as provisões diárias, que lhes são eficazmente entregues por uma miríade de drones sussurrantes. A máquina do mundo cuida e alimenta permanentemente estes restantes humanos desumanizados e sem qualquer ocupação. Nada falta, não sobram quaisquer resíduos, o ar está sempre limpo, ninguém sofre, ninguém se queixa. Este mundo acha-se mergulhado em pura luz azul. Esta tornou-se indiscernível, pois o que ainda chamamos de «mundo» nos nossos dias transformou-se numa infalível máquina omnipresente, a derradeira matriz enquanto mundo interior sem fronteiras exteriores.

Nas suas próprias palavras, Soares afirma que sentiu necessidade de, através desta animação, «mostrar uma visão do futuro mais “positiva” e menos distópica, (mas) o resultado final é mais um falso futuro positivo».12 Contraposta aos esperados efeitos benéficos da já referida Quarta Revolução Industrial, a obra de Soares pode também ser entendida como um aperfeiçoamento lúcido, um 10. «Desta forma, a primeira máquina ultra-inteligente é a última invenção que o homem necessitará de fabricar, desde que a máquina seja suficientemente dócil para nos dizer como a mantermos sob controlo» [tradução nossa]. AG You are from a generation of artists which emerged at the end

anos 1980 e que ganha atenção durante os anos 1990. A tua primeira individual tem lugar na Galeria Monumental, em 1991, e nela introduzes imagens de uma figura emblemática da época, a personagem Spok da série Star Trek. Na individual que realizaste na Galeria no ano seguinte, apresentas uma exposição de dípticos com imagens de interiores de casas e de escritórios, e imagens de carros voadores e outras experiências tecnológicas ligadas à aviação e ao espaço. Quando e porquê surgiu este teu interesse pelo universo da ficção científica e dos desafios tecnológicos?

MS Eu creio que é um interesse geracional, comum a quem nasceu perto de 1970. Houve uma verdadeira explosão de livros, séries, filmes e discos na década de 1970 sobre estes temas. Tem que ver também com os meus interesses pelo design.

Nessa altura já tinha optado por design de equipamento, pelo retrofuturismo, minimalismo, etc.

Your first solo exhibition was at the Galeria Monumental, in 1991, and in it you used images of an emblematic figure of the period, the character Spok from the Star Trek series. In the solo exhibition you produced in the Galeria the following year, you displayed diptychs with images of home and office interiors, and images of flying cars and other technological experiences linked to aviation and space. When and why did your interest in the world of science fiction and technological challenges first come about?

MS I think that it’s a generational interest, shared by people born around 1970. There was a real explosion in books, series, films and records in the 1970s about these themes. It also had a lot to do with my interests in design (at that point I had already opted for equipment design), retrofuturism, minimalism, etc.

AG Your first public shows, in 1989, were in the field of photogra-

AG As tuas primeiras apresentações públicas, em 1989, foram no

domínio da fotografia, que foi também a tua primeira área de formação, no liceu e depois na Escola Ar.Co, em 1988. Tinhas à data o objectivo de seguir a vertente da fotografia no âmbito da expressão artística?

MS No liceu tive ainda algumas dúvidas sobre se deveria seguir arquitectura, pois nas artes é muito difícil viver do trabalho artístico, sobretudo quando não se quer pintar ou desenhar.

As primeiras exposições, que nem aparecem no cv, foram colectivas de desenho, pintura e fotografia. Em 1988 concorria a muitos concursos de fotografia, e publicava desenhos e fotografias no dn Jovem, onde ganhava meia dúzia de livros por mês, que eram os prémios de oferta. Também trabalhava em desenho técnico para um atelier de arquitectura.

AG Desde então tens vindo a explorar outras vertentes da criação

artística como o vídeo, projectos de instalação, a música, a anima-

MS At secondary school I still had some doubts about whether I should pursue architecture, because in the arts it’s very difficult to live off your work, especially when you don’t paint or draw. My first exhibitions, which aren’t even on my cv, were collective ones of drawing, painting and photography. In 1988, I entered numerous photography contests, and had drawings and photographs published in dn Jovem, where I won half a dozen books a month: the prizes that were on offer. I also worked in technical drawing for an architecture studio.

AG Since then you have explored other aspects of artistic creation

like video, installations, music and 3d animation. How do you view photography now in the field of the arts and what is the importance of this medium in your work?

ção 3d. Como encaras actualmente a fotografia no campo das artes e qual a importância deste media no teu trabalho?

MS A fotografia tem uma importância e presença constantes na minha vida desde pequeno, ela pode ser usada com muitas finalidades. Para mim o aparecimento da fotografia digital foi maravilhoso porque reduziu muito os custos de tirar fotografias, desde os armários necessários para os dossiês com negativos, aos custos de revelação, etc. Hoje em dia qualquer pessoa pode tirar muitas fotografias sem problema. E se tirar muitas, algumas serão, de certeza, muito boas.

AG Foste pioneiro a usar as linguagens digitais na criação artística e um dos primeiros artistas da tua geração a ser representado por uma galeria. Ficaste com a Monumental durante onze anos. Como avalias a reacção do meio e do mercado ao teu trabalho durante essa primeira década?

MS Tive a sorte de entrar para uma das galerias mais interessantes daquela época quando tinha 20 anos. Enquanto esperava um ano para entrar para a Faculdade, como uma grande parte dos meus colegas naquele tempo, inscrevi-me num atelier de desenho na Monumental com o Manuel San Payo e, ao mesmo tempo, no Ar.Co. E as fotografias que eu trazia quando chegava do Ar.Co despertaram o interesse do Álvaro Rosendo e do Manuel. Daí ter começado a expor lá em 1991. As exposições correram sempre muito bem em termos de recepção crítica e de público. Nessa altura era normal aparecerem quatro ou cinco críticas à exposição nos melhores jornais, mas não se vendia praticamente nada. E olhando agora para trás,

MS Photography has been important to me and a constant

presence in my life since I was little. It can have various purposes. For me, the invention of digital photography was wonderful because it greatly reduced the costs of taking pictures, from the cupboards needed to store files of negatives, to those of developing, etc. Nowadays anyone can take lots of photographs without any problems. And if they take a lot, then some of them will certainly be very good.

AG You were a pioneer in the use of digital languages in artistic

creation and one of the first artists of your generation to be represented by a gallery. You were with the Monumental for 11 years.

How do you view the reaction of the art world and the market to your work during this first decade?

MS I was lucky to get into one of the most interesting galleries of that period when I was 20 years old. While I waited a year before starting university, like most of my friends at the time, I enrolled in a drawing course at the Monumental with Manuel San Payo and, at the same time, in Ar.Co. The photographs I brought with me when I came back from Ar.Co caught the attention of Álvaro Rosendo and Manuel. So I started to exhibit there in 1991. The exhibitions were always very well received by the critics and the public. At the time it was normal for 4 or 5 reviews of an exhibition to appear in the best newspapers, but I sold hardly anything. Looking back now, I think that during those 11 years I was doing things which were more and more difficult to sell.
