Coal balls are concretions, specifically permineralized peat stages of coal, formed during the process of conversion of peat to coal. Thus, they preserve the original peat fabric of the coal at various stages of that conversion, providing insights into the taphonomic processes involved in the formation of peat during the late Paleozoic. Coal balls have been prized by paleobotanists because they entomb the various organs of the original peat-swamp plants preserved anatomically, thus carrying more information about the plants from peat-swamp environments of this time period than any other form of fossil preservation. They also permit insights into the paleoecology of the individual plants and the communities they composed. We discuss in detail the methods involved in paleoecological analyses.
