How to enrol Autumn Term enrolment opens 11th July and there are three easy ways to enrol: • By phone on 01606 810020 / 810025 • In person at Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College (Term time only Monday – Friday, 9am – 3pm, except bank holidays) • Online by downloading and returning an enrolment form at www.sjd.ac.uk Course Fees: Please note that all courses must be booked in advance and paid for at the time of booking Short courses: (14 weeks or less) must be paid in full at the time of enrolment – you can pay either in person, by telephone or post, using cash, cheque, credit or debit card (excluding American Express and Diners Club) Long courses: (15 weeks or more) can be paid in full at the time of enrolment or as 50% at enrolment and 50% via a postdated cheque.

Fee remission You may be entitled to full or partial remission of course fees if • You are in receipt of full state benefits • You are an individual who has not reached GCSE level C or above in English and Maths and is enrolling on GCSE English or Maths courses.

There is no fee remission on dance, exercise, music, singing or Saturday classes. There is also no remission for examination fees.

Refunds: Refunds cannot be given if you withdraw within 2 weeks of the start of any course or once the course has started.

A non-refundable administration fee of £20 per course is incorporated into all fees and is charged to all students, including those who qualify for full remission of tuition fees.

Other information: Courses with fewer than the relevant minimum number of students may, at the discretion of the College, have the option of continuing, on payment of a supplementary fee.

The College cannot guarantee that the courses listed in this prospectus will run, or that they will be repeated in future programmes.

Fees may be subject to change because of government funding reviews, which can happen at any time. Current fees will always be confirmed at enrolment and updated on our website as soon as we are aware of any changes.

The entire College is a no-smoking area and therefore smoking is forbidden anywhere on the College site, including the Leisure Centre. Students and tutors who need to smoke should do so off the College grounds.

If we have to cancel a course because of low enrolment, a full refund will be given.

GCSE English and Maths are free to students who have not previously achieved a GCSE grade C in the subject they’re enrolling on.

Do you need to improve (or gain) a Maths qualification or want a better understanding of the challenge facing your children? We will cover the key content areas: Statistics and Probability, Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measures. The course is aimed at the Edexcel examination (Foundation level), with two papers to be taken in summer 2017. Please note that a scientific calculator will be useful.

An Introduction to Adobe Lightroom for Photographers

This course is designed for people who want to take the next step with their digital camera as a creative tool. Practical tasks are a key feature to reinforce the theory moving away from the auto button and looking at the aperture setting, shutter speed, ISO and white balance. Composition in portrait and landscape and night photography will also feature.

Additionally we look at the work of famous photographers past and present and what makes a ‘good’ photograph. Once confident with the camera, students will produce creative and exciting photographs.

This is a follow up 8 week course for those who have completed the first level. In this course you will learn the importance of correct focussing, exposure compensation, using filters and an area of the camera rarely used, ‘picture styles’. The rear LCD screen and the mysteries of the camera are comprehensively covered together with much more. With exercises and a final project your new found confidence and creative skills will be demonstrated.

Cake decorating is a very popular activity, firing the imagination and being very creative! Have you wondered how 3D flowers are made or how to make models from sugar paste? This course will show you how to create a teddy bears picnic, jungle animal cake toppers and sugar paste figures of your friends and family, also how to cover a larger cake in sugar paste to attach your favourite topper to. The skills required are easily developed and impressive results can be achieved.

Chinese Flower Painting Chinese flower painting and calligraphy date back 5000 years and involve bold, expressive strokes. This course will teach you the fundamentals of Chinese brush painting as well as the history, culture and philosophy behind it.

It will teach you the basic strokes, how to load your brush with colour and paint expressively with colours. It will teach you contemporary techniques in order to paint traditional Chinese/ Asian flowers – The Four Gentlemen (orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum, plum blossom),lily, tulip, bauhinia, magnolia and poppy.

Dressmaking – Onwards and Upwards Already a basic sewer? Can you use a sewing machine confidently and master basic patterns and dressmaking, but would like to go further with a more tailored finish? The aim of the course is to master more sewing techniques such as concealed zips, collars, sleeves, pleats and hand sewing hems. Come on the first evening with your pattern and fabric, ready to cut out, using a pattern with more advanced techniques for you! You will be given advice and help on your chosen garment as well as learning new techniques every week.

Textile Design Have you heard about free machine embroidery and Feltmaking and would love to have a go?

Even if you haven’t this course will teach you the skills you need to progress to 3D feltmaking using a resist, applique, water soluble fabrics and embellisher machine. New students will use wool fibres to produce felt which will be embellished with free machine stitching and made into panels, small bags etc.

Astronomy - an Introduction This is a beginners’ course aimed at people who want to know what they are looking at in the night sky. Most sessions will be held at a dark sky location in nearby Delamere Forest so that, whenever it is clear, we can get outside and observe the night sky. Please note Delamere sessions may run from 8pm to 10pm to make the most of a dark sky.

Understanding Financial Statements

Do you know the difference between an Income Statement and a Balance Sheet? How can these financial statements be understood and, what’s more, interpreted to enable you to get some sense of the financial health of a business? Royal Yachting Association Day Skipper Course No previous experience is necessary This course provides an initial appreciation of

the principles of seamanship, navigation and pilotage, meteorology, safety and passage planning including an introduction to electronic navigation. It is suitable for those who are considering taking up cruising (sail or motor), have a sportsboat or a day sail boat, or considering chartering in the UK or abroad. The course is a forerunner for the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course.

Royal Yachting Association Coastal/ Offshore Theory Course An advanced course ideal for candidates for the Coastal Skipper practical course and Yachtmaster® Offshore exam. It has some provision for revising the Day Skipper shore based course and covers more advanced skills in offshore and coastal navigation by day and night, pilotage, collision avoidance, meteorology and an introduction to electronic navigation. Students will be expected to do some homework and should possess an RYA Day Skipper Theory certificate or the equivalent.

NEW Bring your own cajon or use one of ours The cajon (pronounced ‘ca-hon’) is a South American instrument that’s affordable, accessible and a great rhythmic accompaniment to acoustic music. Learn to read music – beginners Learn the basics of music reading! Have you ever wondered what all the squiggles mean?

This is the class to teach you. We will learn note values, time signatures, note names and key signatures. Our aim will be to complete the ABRSM Grade 1 theory of music syllabus with the option of taking the exam at the end.

Extras - ABRSM book must be purchased prior to the start of the class, taking the final exam is

Photograph Restoration Basic computing skills required Create the ideal Christmas gift for a parent or grandparent by restoring that creased and damaged photograph you found in the loft.

Digital Photography for Beginners Part 1 (Part 2– 3/12/16) This introductory course is for students who are new to computers or have basic computing skills. They will be guided through the basics of digital camera use and given information about the settings they offer such as auto, landscape, portrait and sports mode. Students will learn how to take, upload, and manipulate photographs using basic editing software.

Once confident students will produce exciting photographs and create gift ideas.

Photoshop - an Introduction

- all materials included Make your Christmas look fabulous by creating sophisticated three dimensional decorations from beautiful papers. Using paper folding techniques and step by step instructions, you can create bells, trees, wreaths, snowflakes, poinsettias, and kusudama flowers. These are both stunning and stylish and will ensure your decorations stand out from the rest!

Getting the best from your D.S.L.R. Camera – Beginners - This course is only suitable for those with a Digital Single Lens Reflex camera.

This course is an opportunity to explore your DSLR camera and have fun putting what you learn into practice. Appreciate how to get the best from your photography, master your camera controls and be creative with composition, exposure, depth of field, and what makes a good photograph. Using architecture, landscapes and interiors you will discover imaginative ways to construct an image.

Mindfulness for health and wellbeing: an introductory workshop This workshop aims to increase our awareness so that we can make a choice to respond to life’s ups and downs rather than reacting on autopilot. Mindfulness can help us to feel more calm and relaxed and to manage stressful situations or chronic pain, allowing us to live life more fully and access greater health and wellbeing. All activities are optional and can be done while sitting in a chair. Please bring a yoga mat, blanket and cushion.

Paediatric First-Aid - Certificated by Sir John Deane’s College.

This course covers everything you need to know on helping a sick, injured or ill child, prior to the arrival of the emergency services.

The course will cover the following subjects and more: checking for signs of breathing, checking for injuries on a casualty, recovery position, childhood illnesses, burns, infant and child resuscitation, choking & bleeds and shock management.

Tangling for Mindfulness Described as ‘Yoga for the brain’ tangling has become increasingly popular as a method of art meditation. Zentangling is the production of beautiful and unique artwork by focussing on one line at a time. It can be enjoyed by all ages, and at any level of art ability. In the morning, the course considers the benefits of the practice; some forms to use; adapting forms with shading; shadows and auras. In the afternoon, we bring the forms together to create unique artwork tiles that students can take away.

Watercolours – Autumn Landscapes - A list of materials required will be provided on enrolment In this session we will use painting techniques to capture the effect of autumn trees in the landscape. We will explore colour and what colours work well together for dramatic effects.

We will experiment with different media added to our watercolours to produce colours and textures. The tutor will provide images to work from but you are also welcome to bring your own images.

Digital Photography Part 2- the next steps - (Part 1 – 26/11/2016) Students will be guided through the basics of digital camera use and the special features they offer. Students will learn to take, upload, and manipulate photographs, move away from the auto button and look at features such as the Macro button, (A) Aperture setting and (S) shutter speed. Once confident at using these you will experiment with light and composition and editing to produce exciting photographs.

Emergency First Aid - 1 Day Appointed Person Course - Certificated by Sir John Deane’s College.

This introductory course will enable you to act as an appointed person within the work place and is also for those who would like some knowledge of First Aid. The modules included in the course are: responsibilities of a first aider, basic life saving techniques, care of the unconscious casualty, cardio pulmonary resuscitation, management of bleeding and reporting, recording and management of incidents.

Introduction to Documentary Photography

NEW This course is designed to guide you through the concept of documentary photography.

Whether you plan to photograph a wedding, a family party or an annual public event. You will be shown how to plan and build a story board that will help you clarify what it is you are trying to photograph. You will learn the basics of your cameras creative controls and study good composition. Provided your camera can be manually operated in creative mode ie. Aperture, Speed, ISO etc and is not a film camera then it will be suitable for the course. A Bridge or D.S.L.R. camera is ideal.
