In the Realms of the Unreal The Research and Design of the Language Campus for teenager immigration from China to Germany

THE BANANA CASE What is Banana case? The name of my project banana case comes from a typical Chinese joke. For a long time, we called the oversea Chinese banana. Though they have the same yellow skin as us, in order to adjust to the new society around them. They transform themselves similar to western people, white people. (The joke is rude, but tells directly the dilemma of immigration-Identity transition. I use this joke only to add the impression at the same time also as a symbol of my project. It’s nothing about discriminate or try to defined people by color :-) There is a magic invention from Japan used to keep the banana fresh called banana case. I used this as the title of my project, trying to design relax and comfortable cases for my young bananas in the realms of the unreal world for them.

Why Banana case? Immigration from developing countries to developed countries has already become the hotspot issue all over the world. In this indeterminate changing, I take the sample of teenager. In my opinion, they are the sample we should be consider about. According to the special language and society condition of Germany and based on the background of myself. I decide to design a Language Campus for the Chinese teenager immigration (10 to 18 years old).settle down in Germany.

How I build the banana case? I began with the research of two countries in completely different history process. The first overlap point I found was in medieval, both countries suffered from natural disasters and tried to escape from the reality by dreaming in new kinds of literature. In Europe, it presented by dream poetry. The master is Geoffrey Chaucer who is well known as the father of England literature. And in China it developed to dream opera. “Peony Pavilion” is one of the master piece of this period. I used a mater piece of literature „Peony pavilion “as the structure of my project. I abstracted my project to 4 separate exercises. They’re 1.Journey 2. Nightmare 3. Seek 4.Reproduce. I tried to present my idea and also my design in the dynamic process in order to prove the brief of our studio “On the Move”.

RESEARCH STRUCTURE & BACKGROUND

The Banana Survey

In order to have a directly, clear and real knowledge of my teenager Banana, I design the question paper (which I give a nick name of my survey: Banana Survey) to connect these five actors: School, Local people, Germany, Positive banana, negative banana and other as and I abstract them to the following five questions:

From the diagram you can tell there are 25 girls, 25 boys a, I try to choose the sample from every age around 10 to 18. By the statistical analysis of the survey I found the primary society parts they feel problems to adjust to the Germany society (D3): The way of thinking: 44%

Q1: When did you come to Germany? How old were you at that time?

Education problem: 40%

Q2: In your opinions, what’s the differences between German and China?

Hobby: 28%

Q3: What did you do actively to adjust Germany life?

Food: 24%

Q4: What did you do passively to adjust Germany life, or is there something you still refuse to change?

Shopping: 24% Drug or drink problem: 20%

Q5: Do you have some advises for the language school or the foundation? The survey was last for 6 months from 09.2014 to 03.2015.I use the popular social website (Facebook and Renren) and mobile social software (WhatsApp and Weichat) to collect the results. I sent in total 100 question papers by messages and emails and finally got 87 back. To make my survey more reasonable I did a shaker test to pick out the sample with the following conditions:

Keep distance/ social problem 20% Keyword of the impression of German: rigid, independent, lonely. Life speed: 12% Awareness of sex: 10% And also another diagram of the common advises they give to the language campus (D4):

• Age between 10-18,when they came to Germany Flexible course for different level language learner 60% • Came to Germany after 2003 and already be here for at least 6 consecutive months.

Have more activities at weekend that also have local Germen to take part in 50%

• Finished the paper

SITE STORY

I chose the site in Kreuzburg, Berlin. And the location of the site is 13.44, 52.5, 13.46, 52.49 I’m familiar with this area. This part may be the most multi-culture area of Berlin. People of this area are really from all over the world. People here are friendly and for the other side as an area that becoming more and more popular but not yet. The cost of life here is still cheaper than other place. There are also a lot of international schools located here. In the buildings which I used to work in had the one of the most famous street painting--- Cuvry Brache. And I selected the block just in front of it as my design site. One really interesting thing happened during the process of my project. The

site used to be the shelter of the homeless guys before the government sold the site to a Muchen investment company. At the end of last year the police men and government officers came to clean up all the homeless because the company decided to put a really luxury high-rise shopping and residential building called “Cuvryhöfe” here, with the structure completely cover the famous painting. The only way for you to enjoy the “street painting” is to go in to the mall or you paid. The artist blu response by blacking the painting on the day 11th, Dec, 2014.

And he left the following message in his blog, “In a way, it is a ‘fuck you’ gesture towards the city ‘as a silent protest to the excessive modern consumption concept.

Though it’s formally complex, could adjust to the city such as the embrace of density, compression, intelligent and shared infrastructures and also a careful integration of landscape and ecological system. But the problem is that the building can’t be complete independent from the urban system.

We have a huge background story of Rilao, who create it, how does it grow up, how does it work and what happened during all these process. For the movie project, we chose a very short period of our story, from people will be represent as data package to you may be delete as a data package.

TIMELINE OF THE WORLD OF RILAO

A long, long time ago…

2013 – RILAO is developed as a system to make sense of the ever-expanding, always-unorganized data generated and in turn bombarding the citizens of earth.

2065 – American government become the first country practice The Purge, in the process you updating your Rilao, some of the people will be delete by the government, but all of this is decorated as an ad to update your gene sequence.

2025 – RILAO is given its own intelligence, with the three laws of robotics as its core. It is able to start decision making to advance the human race to levels of technology and social philosophy never before seen. 2030 – RILAO begins its search for suitable worlds for human colonization

2065 – Almost all the countries start plan The Purge… 2066 – A group of resistance fighters cum hackers start an uprising and attempt to restore RILAO to its form glory by feeding it (and through association) the US government, false data, leading to their own downfall…and since now the plan MM completely failed…

2043 – Since RILAO created, in the past 30 years, there is no wars, no terrorisms, no criminals, everything is so beautiful. But there is also no creations, no handcrafts, and no designs.

Calligraphy written in the re-diagram of Hutong

With the recognition of the digitalized architecture as current trend or phenomenon and the traditional Chinese architecture methods don‘t work well in the city process, architects are easily confused in terms of the solutions of Hutong resketch.

My project and research aimed to develop a new available system for the Hutong reconstruction based on Chinese calligraphy on the other side I also tried to abstract a new kind of diagram style based on Calligraphy.

I began with the study of Chinese Calligraphy in many fields including 8 basic prototypes, drawing ways, power, directions and ink. The current Hutong system is similar to Chinese calligraphy in many ways such as limited prototypes and also the ways of development. I represent the Chinese calligraphy by the construction of the ways in Hutong.

For the first stage the element was composed just as ‘splashed ink‘. In other words, the particles are gradually emitted as diffusion of ink on paper. Second, by using the motion path, the emitting particles start to move along the certain path and follow the movement by the painter‘s hand and power.

In order to analysis the movements of Calligraphy, I chose one of the master piece of Caoshu. And the meaning of the writing means one of the famous place in Hutong. The work shows the atypical structure, the energy makes the canvas more dynamic. The drawing show the attempts made to find the flow of the force from the invisible environment in relation to the brush motion of Calligraphy.

Beyond the movement of the particles, the final form can be achieved through the process of delivering the energy. Thus, in the last stage, types of physical were given to deform the movement. In this study I tried to find the ways to represent the line into many various forms by controlling the magnitude, speed of the field and so on.

I presented the final result with a diagram of hutong in both image and structure.

The ink and calligraphy in China is refer as the art of emptiness and lines. The emptiness often occupies or covers more than half of the canvas, which becomes filled mainly with lines rather than planes, breathing between fengshui and yin-yang. The line is not static but dynamic, continuously rousing up vitality, as the‘ breathing and living entity in itself‘.

I try to resketch the profile of hutong by the basic 8 units of calligraphy. In my opinion the original Hutong is more like art and had its own rules and melody’s. The add parts of Hutong nowadays completely ignoring the rules of hutong and lack of planning.

In this stage we explore the relationship with the lines from last step and the space. The lines across the space can create the space or dissolve the space. We create the space based on the cellular automata rules to control the density. And we use the lines to redesign and reshape the space.

LUOFU PLAN The project is in the countryside of south China, though it‘s the economic developed area of China, the construction condition is still on the basic level.

According to the reality condition, we design a feedback system not only consider of the construction itself, with five main process. (Pre design, proposal, construction, achievement and feedback achievement. The owner, construction workers, tourists and manager are also parts of the process.

The basic aim of this project is to make a multi objective design and to set up a basic system for an optimization of project in the countryside of China. Because of the variables of the project we cannot control the final result, we can control every process and feed back to the design.

The research processing includes pre survey and pro survey. The main respondents are the construction workers and the tourists. In the countryside of China, construction workers are more like construction craftsmen they are not professional or really educated but they have a lot of experience that they under the space and the feature of the material. The tourists are the main users of the project. We did the survey before and after the construction and try to represent their behavior mode with time geography to assist the design.

Demonstration is also an important part of the project, feedback design and variance fix.

The project is still going on until the year of 2017.

SUBSTITUTE SOLUTION FOR THE CURRENT CONDITION IN CHINA

What could a young-generation Architect do during the high speed Modernization of China ?

Thousands of years, traditional Chinese have their tendency of experience overwhelming standards formulated by western industries. Even though architects themselves are performing an international practice as skyscraper and high-rise buildings surprise citizens year by year, construction workers in countryside or other less developed parts of China still follow the walking path of our ancestors.

We used to adopt technical method --- code writing as a logical way to express our consideration about traditional Chinese architecture under the circumstance of parameterization. However, the attempt failed. New ideas and buildings rise up in this field, but the concept of “parameterization” itself has been proved to be a fake proposition.

Therefore, we decided to start this project with sincere respect to those experienced construction teams instead of critical thinking. And we marked every member a proper label such as decision maker, constructer, visitor and expert. By taking this method, we shed more lights on participants, making sure that every useful feedback could be taken care during the reconstruction process in this project.

For example in the project platform plaza, according to the advice of construction workers, we use the traditional “layer stone wall” that has almost extinct in China instead of the normal brick wall. And in the project lychee garden, we use stone texture feature to replace the manual pattern before. And there are more.

Consequently, the progress we achieved shows that we cannot jump directly into the modern Industrial system without the traditional Chinese construction craftsmen, or use design formulas to quantize the tastes of tourists. We cannot construct a pure rationalism while ignore the context at the same time. Therefore, we build a logic research system to understand our construction workers and share their unique experience. We also use time geography theory to represent the behavior modes of the tourists. What we intend is to call demonstration feedback our design. We’re not “revolutionist”, we are professional “fixer” with own points of view.

Those are my answers to the question of how young Chinese architects act during the process of China’s modernization.

Worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Largest 3D-Printed Architectural Pavilion

Natural structures are analyzed and understood as hierarchies of very simple components organized into constructs from the smallest arrangement of material, through successive subassemblies to the most complex â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the whole organism or body. Properties and performances emerge that are Human occupancy, in particular proximity and time lapse, will be the parameters that will define multispectral requirements. These requirements transfer to the phenotype, described by softwarecontrolled parameters.

The basic aim of this project is to design a flexible dividable 3d-Printed structure as the customer require. And we also work on a system that will act as structure and fit the feature of the material at the same time. The development of these systems will originate from the definition of their simplest constituents integrating manufacturing constraints and assembly logic in parametric components.

The research processing includes experimentation and to know the feature of the material in order to build a stand able structure. We use silkworm, vault and many other parametric tools to help our design. This new combine knowledge will be applied in the design of structure system and unit. We set up a 2 week workshop during this process also to teach the basic knowledge of form founding and 3D-printing.

Consequently, the system also includes the development of parametric, by using this kind of new techniques we can get the feedback and improve data during the process.

Public space is not all based on urban planning, the original thing inside of the topic is civilization and group memory.

QIN

-MAX WEBER flexible Interactive Square Design

Qin is an interactive square mainly design for the local citizens. The site located in the historical building areas of the city Qingdao. And the surrounding is very crowd. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s also one of the sea nearby site and the natural condition (the wind direction and the sun direction) is really different from summer to winter. The main aim of this project is to take full use of the underground space and also the natural condition of this area. So I start with the study of flexible system. I used diagrid as my study object and main focus on density structure, connected, porosity and grid itself, also of this kind of physical feature project to a really natural condition in this situation. According to the study I design a shell system based on 9 prototype.

The building is an organism for system study experiences of diagrid knowledge and beauty.

I happened to read that it‘s already 300 years passed since china came from China to Europe. I‘m wondering what happened in Europe from the past 300 years, what s changed and what‘s kept.

I flop my mind to four areas: The history of china in Europe, Crazy thinker that hadn't been accept in his time age, The fashion capital

and the politic center. I research the first area as a timeline and the other 3 as time points. What's happen nowadays? What's already happened in the past? Did the history a loop? Are we repeat ourselves some how?

I tried to describe all of my mind movie with photos abstraction. I used nowadays time points cities photos to picture the old one and the old one to picture the newest.
