INTRO Hello people! The tuning of wideframe Vespa models has recently become even more popular. Most of the old ladies with the charismatic motorcycle-style handlebars are kept mothballed in the garage with the rest of the collection or used for very rare outings to the immediate vicinity. Their ancient engines cannot really be trusted, especially over longer distances. Another problem is the paltry 2-3hp, a guarantee that you will be hopelessly underpowered for modern traffic conditions. A group of tireless tuners and spirited engineers have got together around the 'Faro Basso' models in a search for satisfactory solutions. They have been busy optimising the porting on original cylinders, swapping pistons and experimenting with various carburettor set ups, etc... There are two basic types of original Wideframe motor : One has a single transfer port, the other has two. The type with one transfer port (externally identifiable by the horizontal exhaust manifold) provides hardly any possibilities for tuning ; A POLINI CP19 carburettor kit, performance air filter, a CNC machined cylinder head and an electronic ignition. The increase in power can however still be noticed. An alternative is presented by organising a used two-port engine (â‚Ź250-300) and retiring the one-port type . The two-port engine (externally identifiable by the vertically positioned exhaust manifold) provides much more scope for effective motor tuning. With the addition of the suitable components the two-port type can be made to produce between 10 and 14hp, combined with up to 15Nm of torque. This makes the scooter perfectly adequate for keeping up with the demands of modern traffic and even manage a mountain-pass or three! A number of Wideframe tuning parts are now available over-the-counter and are relatively simple to fit. Performance aluminium cylinders from PINASCO with 160cc, reinforced crankshafts from SERIE PRO by STOFFI, carburettor kits based on the POLINI CP type carburettor, race exhausts from SIP, maintenance-free 12V ignition systems, taller gearing kits, improved clutch types and suspension parts open up as yet unexplored horizons for all Vespa Wideframe fans! The inclusion of these components enable the creation of an everyday runabout scooter with the unmistakeable style of the 50's Vespa models with the headlamp on the front mudguard. As a bonus these features have been conceived to enable their removal with no trace

that they were ever fitted or modification to the rare original parts. Entry-level tuning is provided in the form of a race exhaust. Plug & Play mounted, they can deliver an increase in performance from both original and tuning cylinders. Phase two would involve the original carburettor, air-filter and manifold be replaced by a version of the POLINI CP carburettor kit. Cubic capacity can only be beaten by more cubic capacity and a more noticeable boost in power output can be realised with the addition of a modern aluminium tuning cylinder by PINASCO. With a stroke of 57mm and a 60mm bore this kit realises a cubic capacity of 160cc and a total of five transfer ports ensure a sufficient supply of fresh fuel mixture to the combustion chamber. The newly-configured cylinder head type provides the suitable compression. To translate this extra power into real-life road-speed a suitable primary-drive cog and/or a taller transmission kit from PINASCO can be included in the gearbox set up. The original ignition is easily replaced by a modern maintenance-free 12V electronic type, eliminating ignition problems and providing useably bright lighting!

Licence-built models The models produced under licence from PIAGGIO by ACMA, Hoffman, Motovespa, Allstate and Douglas were equipped with the same motor as the Italian originals. The only difference can be found in that the licence models were built with the one-port motors for longer than the PIAGGIO scooters. From 1953, the Pontedera produced VM models were provided with the new two-port motors, the licence models first benefiting from the update in 1955. Douglas Vespas however remained equipped with the one-port type. All 150cc Wideframe models include a two-port motor as standard.

RACING CYLINDER PINASCO „FAROBASSO LAMELLARE” 160CC The presentation of the ‚Faro Basso Lamellare’ performance cylinder, by PINASCO, makes a ‚plug & play‘ race cylinder for wheezy vintage wideframe models a reality at last! Its 166cc is made possible by a stroke of 57mm and a bore diameter of 60mm, which is kept supplied with adequate amounts of fresh fuel charge by a total of five transfer ports. Its newly developed cylinder head, included with the kit, provides the suitable compression. The kit includes a 4-petal reed valve and manifold. We suggest to use the PINASCO or SERIE PRO carburettor kit. This cylinder kit is compatible with all Vespa wideframe models with an original capacity of either 125 or 150cc. The 125cc motor, with a stroke of just 54mm, will require a crankshaft conversion to provide the necessary 57mm of stroke used by this cylinder kit. Due to the increased performance of this cylinder we strongly recommend the inclusion of a tuning type crankshaft, such as those produced by PINASCO, SIP Performance or DRT, for both 125cc and 150cc models.

TUNING CRANKCASE

CRANKCASE PINASCO SLAVE / SUPER SLAVE These ‚Super‘ and ‚Super Slave‘ engine casings for the Vespa Fenderlight models enable PINASCO to clone an extinct motor with many modern features, such as Vespa PX cylinder compatibility. The design of these brand-new casings includes numerous advantages over that of the originals. The most obvious is the generously dimensioned reed valve inlet located directly over the crankshaft. The gasket surface area around the transfer port openings is larger than the original version and the greater volume of the castings surrounding the cylinder base gasket area offers enough potential for more extensive porting modifications. These engine casings are available as either a ‚Slave‘ version with three cylinder mounting studs, or the ‚Super Slave‘ type with four studs. The three-stud ‚Super‘ casings allow the standard and race cylinders that were compatible with the original Fenderlight engine casings to be fitted.

The ‚Super Slave‘ casings can be equipped with any Vespa PX 125 two-port cylinders. The PINASCO ‚Slave‘ represents an excellent replacement for damaged or worn original engine casings and also provides a good basis for further tuning measures. These engine casings from PINASCO also require their 60mm stroke crankshaft (#26081890) and they are compatible with all Vespa PX type clutches. RACING CYLINDER CC CORSA 160CC C.C.Corsa of Reggio Emilia in Italy produce the finest Faro Basso tuning components for all fenderlight Vespa engines equipped with a three cylinder holding stud system. This kit has a reed valve inlet, a modern cylinder head with an effective squish-band and a piston that has proven its enduring qualities in countless APRILIA race motors. This performance cylinder should be combined with a 57mm stroke crankshaft from the Vespa GS and 150cc models. Our SIP Performance #45142400 provides the perfect solution. Alternatively the fitting of a 60/61mm stroke crankshaft, such as the #45089100, enables a capacity increase to 172cc. This conversion requires the use of custom fabricated cylinder base plate spacers and the cylinder head should be machined to match. The six transfer ports have an up-to-date layout combined with a large cross-sectional area, which is kept minimal at the base openings to enable plug and play fitting, without extra material having to be welded to the engine casings. There is now a plug&play method to boost the power output of Vespa wideframe models, the SIP ‚Faro Basso‘ racing cylinder!

A 131cc SERIE PRO racing cylinder by BOLLAG Motors - the basis is provided by a cast-iron cylinder with 3-transfer ports, equipped with a high-end piston from GRANDSPORT and a CNC machined cylinder head.

The basis was provided by a 3-port, cast-iron cylinder with the third transfer-port being sealed off by a gasket spacer. This port is then activated by a third piston port window. A newly configured CNC cylinder head, with an ‚O‘-ring, ensures the raised compression can be safely maintained and is centralised by groove on the cylinder. This cylinder fits all 125/150cc wideframe 2 port motors without crankcase modification. The 54mm stroke crankshaft included with the 125cc models will require replacement with a 57mm stroke crankshaft. Due to the increased power output, whether 125 or 150cc motors, we recommend its combination with performance-orientated crankshaft, such as those produced by PINASCO, STOFFI or TAMENI.

CONVERTING A VESPA 125 VM2 TO 166CC My Vespa 125 VM2 is great fun to own and ride! There are a couple of things though that have always been annoying : For example, bad to zero lighting performance, doubtful reliability and naturally the (lack of) power from the almost sixty year-old engine. Regrettably, all too often the more powerful Rally was chosen for jaunts to the local 'Biergarten’, due to its doubtless reputation of faithful service. Recently, the possibilities available to me to update the 'Fender Light' have become more affordable and that's enough of an impulse for me to get started on the tuning project for my beauty with the motorcycle-style handlebars! To start with an appraisal of its current state : Ancient tyres, rusty wheels, original pogo-stick style shock absorbers, brakes hardly worth the title, a headlight with the strength of a cemetery candle and awkwardly-routed control-cables. Much patience is required to coax the old lady into life, the motor wheezes and coughs its way up through the rev-range while billowing smoke from the

exhaust, the clutch-action is audibly industrial and the overall performance - let’s say - underwhelming in its predictability. At about a speed of 60 kph acceleration is over and is screaming and wailing in protest at the torture. A stint on the dyno' reveals the naked truth : 2,5hp at the rear wheel, 5Nm of torque. It would hardly pull the skin off a rice pudding...All in all the conversion took about fifteen hours for the two of us...Thanks to Jesco! Once completed it was like riding a completely different scooter! Shock absorbers that work, steady straight-line performance, solid braking power, smooth cable operation, a beaming bright headlamp! The motor fires up first kick and impresses with a plateau-like 15Nm of torque and a 12.5hp peak-power output! 100 kph are now easily reached and maintainable and more importantly, there is enough life in the old girl to be able to accelerate away from the lights like the rest of the traffic! My vintage lady will now be accompanying me a lot more often to the 'Biergarten’ in future...Ralf (SIP) We have made a video documenting the work undertaken during this conversion. TUNING CYLINDER HEADS & PISTONS

CYLINDER HEAD SERIE PRO 'IL NASO'

This SIP conversion cylinder head represents an economical first step on the road to tuning any wideframe model. The modified combustion chamber and a higher compression result in more performance. Aluminium / CNC machined. This cylinder head can only be used in combination with a 150cc piston (#75008000) produced by GRAND SPORT. Incl. an 'O' ring gasket for improved sealing. Motors with 150cc can be fitted with this cylinder head without any further modification. Models that are fitted with the 125cc cylinders will require these to be re-bored and honed to a diameter of 57mm.

This 'Il Naso' cylinder head, produced by Nagy Blechroller, suitable for all 125cc wideframe motors fitted with a deflector piston system. Due to the re-profiled combustion area of this cylinder head and its higher compression ratio of 1:8 it can improve the acceleration and increase the top speed produced by the motor.

Mounting Tip : The timing of the ignition will require adjustment : 20° for non-modified cylinders, 18°-19° for modified cylinders, Flytech, Vespatronic : 23°-24° @ 2500-3000 rpm

This CNC milled cylinder head can be 'Plug & Play' mounted to the original cylinder without adjusting the jetting of the carburettor! We recommend a POLINI carburettor and a B7HS spark-plug.

TUNING CRANKSHAFT & ACCESSORIES If an older Vespa engine has been neglected for a while the crankshaft is seized or the disc valve is rusty, the bearing and oil shaft seal seats are often distorted, the con rod bearings worn along with the woodruff key and seat. These defects make the replacement of the crankshaft necessary when reconditioning the engine. If the engine rebuild also involves tuning the crankshaft bearings will also require updating.

DRT have a crankshaft available with either 57 or 60 mm stroke that provides an ideal basis to give Faro Basso, and similar Vespa models, a little more performance. The increased stroke provided by the 60mm con rod version can easily be compensated with the use of a 1,5mm gasket at either the base or the head of the cylinder.

Our new range of SIP crankshafts are all 100% ‚Made in Italy‘ and easily satisfy the above listed requirements. We have paid special attention to provide the highest quality crankshafts, equipped with time-proven construction details. These crankshafts are manufactured including a pin-roller bearing for the small end of the con rod, assuring a vast improvement over the original factory solution. This enables the piston to withstand the extra load of the higher revs that a tuned motor makes possible. With the inclusion of a 57mm stroke cylinder (PINASCO, SIP, Bollag) a crankshaft from the 150cc models will always be required, that include con rod bearings. These are perfect for any engine rebuild, along with any mild tuning projects.

New crankshaft bearings, oil seals and woodruff keys are essential when replacing the crankshaft. Fresh gaskets and flywheel/clutch fixing nuts should also be renewed. It is also helpful to have the correct crankshaft de/mounting tools (#27338000, #21071000, #18119000).

TUNING RACING EXHAUSTS In a very short time, the SIP Road developed into the most wanted touring exhaust system of all. It is also mounted on most of our SIP Vespas, whether long-distance tourers or torque-orientated town-centre sprinters. The SIP Road range now includes a version for models with a mudguard-mounted headlight and the GS, so that they can be used everyday on longer tours. All SIP Road exhaust types for the Vespa 125 VM/VN/150 VL/VB1T/VGL1T models provide noticeably more torque along with a considerable boost in power. They enable a ride comfort and easier gear selection which is often lacking with these vintage scooters. The sound of the SIP Road is decent and not too obtrusive, ideal for both urban adventure and the odd touring safari! The high quality of their production is not only evident in the multi-segment expansion chamber section but also the high precision of the welds and

a reinforced bolt-connection for the manifold. These exhausts are constructed in the factory and not converted from the cut-open carcass of an existing exhaust type. It took us quite a while making the SIP Road compatible with the wideframe models. They now fit perfectly and are delivered with a special bracket that enables all Vespa PX exhausts to be successfully attached to the wideframe Vespas (the manifold must be modified after all). The SIP Road Sport is produced to resemble the style of the 'SITO Sport' exhaust systems available in the 60s. They are coated either red or black with chromed end-pipes with the special PX exhaust adaptor bracket included in the delivery. Get a real buzz from your wideframe by combining the SIP Road with a PINASCO cylinder, a Flytech ignition, a suitable crankshaft and a POLINI CP carburettor kit! Do not forget a suitable suspension upgrade with a pair of SIP Performance shock absorbers.

TUNING IGNITION SIP PERFORMANCE SIP have managed to gain the assistance of a major European producer, VAPE, to manufacture these high-end ignition systems for our beloved Vespas. The materials, production and construction of the SIP PERFORMANCE ignition systems are of the highest quality. The laser-cut logo is a good indication of the overall clean and efficient manufacture of the components of this kit. The electrical functions are representative of state of the art modern technology. Due to the eight coils included on the stator-plate enough power is created at tickover revs to already fully illuminate the Vespas lighting. The CDI module is available as a ‚Road‘ version with a static ignition point, similar to the original item, or a ‚Sport‘ version that includes a variable ignition point which advances at low revs. This increases the available torque - especially at the lower end - and the ignition point is then gradually retarded as the rpm rises into the power-band. This also helps reduce the combustion temperature while simultaneously providing an increased rev-range.

The pick-up on the stator-plate is split into two and arranged on top of another instead of next to each other as with the original design. This eliminates the possibility of false positioning during the initial set up due to the sloppy manufacturing tolerances included on many Vespa engine casings, crankshafts, stator-plates and flywheels. The exact ignition point is clearly marked with a precise line on both the flywheel and stator-plate, which allows ignition adjustment without stroboscopic lamp. All you need to do is find out the top dead center (TDC). One of the most major advances achieved is the production of the fly/fanwheel unit as a single component, avoiding a riveted inner mounting-cone and an uneven rotation. This greatly reduces engine vibration while also noticeably extending the working life of the flywheel side crankshaft bearing. The original fanwheel is used. Further CNC fanwheels are available in the accessories range. Do not forget to order a new spark plug and spark plug cap!

TUNING IGNITION & ACCESSORIES IGNITION PINASCO 'FLYTECH' With their newly developed variable Flytech igntion PINASCO can now offer a further alternative to the classics provided by VESPATRONIC, PARMAKT, etc. This ignition possesses a pre-set curve that helps support the performance of the motor throughout the whole rev range. The main innovative feature of the PINASCO ignition is the flywheel unit. The noticeably wider design of the magnets are surrounded by a sturdy, protective steel ring. It also has the function of stabilising the magnets in case of a crankshaft stub breakage. The centrifugal mass of the flywheel is enhanced by the shrink–fit steel ring which is positioned further from its axis due to its greater diameter. This causes increased inertia and helps prevent damage to the motor being caused by over-revving. The fanwheel, made from a hard Nylon material, features an optimised fin design that is able to deliver 20% more air for perfect cooling of the cylinder. The ignition is equipped with a 6V voltage regulator. If necessary it can be replaced with a 12V voltage regulator (#25350021). IGNITION VESPATRONIC It is quite obvious that the advantages which variable ignition provide to racing scooters will also be a welcome improvement to the engines of earlier models. Therefore Max and Tino have developed a range of VESPATRONIC ignition kits to suit vintage Vespas. The main advantage is that they are completely electronic and easy to install. These ignition systems are virtually maintenance. Another advantage is that the ignition point varies according to the RPM of the motor. More power in the lower end of the rev-range combined with lower combustion temperatures are advantages to every cylinder. Machines equipped with a 6V electrical system will benefit especially in the lights department from the extra power available. An ideal supply of electrical current, improved torque in lower revs coupled with more stability in the higher end of the rev range: a definite improvement for all original motors. TUNING CLUTCH & GEAR BOX The combination of the clutch cog and the primary-drive cog provides the primary transmission ratio of this Vespa. It is solidly riveted to the input shaft and is directly connected to the secondary transmission. The more power produced by a motor, the taller the gear ratios should be. This enables the additional performance to be translated into a higher road-speed. This primary-drive cog is compatible with all

Vespa PX clutches and the original clutch can no longer be used. If you wish to include a PX clutch a CNC machined clutch gasket-surface spacer (#17650000) will also be required. The cogs are available with either 64 or 65 cog teeth. The smaller the number of cog teeth (64/65), the taller the transmission ratio will be.

INPUT SHAFT ASSEMBLY 4-GEAR

CLUTCH KIT SIP 'COSA 2'

This set of output shaft gear cogs ‚DRT 807‘ comprises of cogs with 13-13-17-21 teeth respectively and is part of a four-speed gearbox upgrade. This kit enables the original three-speed gearbox included with the Vespa 125 VM/VN/150 VL/VB1 to be upgraded to a four-speed type for an improved exploitation of any extra power available and also a higher maximum speed! This conversion requires mechanical knowledge to be properly and safely installed. The original output shaft from the VB1M engine can still be used, along with the input shaft. The gear selector and cruciform from the GS 150 should be used to replace the VB1M items. The corresponding gear cog sizes and their possible combination possibilities are listed at our webshop. With use of the original first gear, the rest of the gear cogs originate from the Vespa PX Lusso models engine. The first and fourth gear cogs will require slight modification however, with the first gear having its centre section machined to fit and the fourth requires narrowing. The suitable DRT gear cogs can be used as well of course. DRT also produce high quality primary drive cogs with 65 or 67 teeth, which have the effect of altering the overall gear ratio. This are fully compatible with otherwise original gearbox set ups.

Now the advantages of a modern 'COSA 2' clutch type can also be enjoyed by the riders of vintage wideframe models. We use the SIP 'COSA 2' clutch as a basis. Due to the higher pressure and the greater friction increased power can be transmitted. The laser-cut precision build of the clutch basket helps prevent sticking, slipping and jerky acceleration while also requiring little pressure for operation. These clutches are also suited for both standard and tuned engines. This SIP clutch kit includes a SIP 'COSA 2 clutch and all necessary mounting extras such as a gasket surface spacer, a pushrod, a pressure plate, etc. They are available with either a 23 or 24 toothed drive cog.

GEARBOX KIT 4-GEAR PINASCO

CLUTCH DRT RACE

An increasing number of vintage Vespa riders wish to boost the power output of their original motors. This PINASCO 4-speed gearbox upgrade kit for wideframe models allows you to provide four gears to the engine instead of the original three. This enables closer ratios between the gears, helping the vintage motor better exploit the usable power available to manage hills or a passenger. The 4th gear included has the same gear ratio as the original third gear found in the standard VN and VM gearbox types. A taller overall ratio can be achieved by also fitting a primary drive kit with a higher than standard gear ratio. This set up minimises the gaps between the individual ratios more than with the three-speed type. The motor no longer drops the optimal power band area and is fully capable of being fitted with a taller overall gear ratio. Gear ratios : 1st gear – 52/13, 2nd gear – 52/18, 3rd gear – 47/23, 4th gear – 43/27. The engine casings will require slight internal modification around the crankcase area in order to fully accept this gear kit. The roller bearings for the input shaft are provided by the 21 used in the PX 125-200 engine. To complete the conversion a selector box from the Vespa GS 150 (VS3, VS4, VS5) is also necessary. The kit includes a drive shaft, gear cogs, cruciform, selector rod, input shaft axle, counter shaft and full English language instructions.

SIP Scootershop got together with Denis Innocente at DRT and took on solving problems models produced between 1946 and 1957. The original clutch units are no longer available for these models. The only chance, up till then, to obtain replacement was on the used market. We have now developed and produced a new version of this clutch type with many 'state of the art' updates which guarantee a comfortably ideal light clutch action, even with increased performance motor set ups. The precision CNC milled components and the newly developed clutch base plate ensure an optimal transfer of power. The smaller bush, with the needles is replaced with a thicker and larger bronze bush without needles. Overhauling your motor and replacement is made much easier. VESPA WIDEFRAME AUDAX

Fenderlight Vespa feeling: after the „Trofeo della Baviera“ last year, our customer Frank Henkel now held his 2nd Faro Basso Vespa tour, this time in the picturesque area around Garmisch-Partenkirchen, less than 80km away from the SIP headquarters. The tour was planned as „Audax“, actually a cycling style of a uniform ride. In the Vespa scene, a modification has prevailed in which one has a fixed start time to return 6.5 hours later, trying to meet the personal time again as near as possible. Between these two measuring points, Frank once again planned a wonderful tour over small roads through the mountains, which made a lot of fun with the old Vespas. The road book, which each participant received, was perfect and such a „scavenger hunt for adults“ is just big fun.

WIDEFRAME STORY

About 80 Wideframe Vespas met at 8:30am at the Eibsee at the valley station of the new impressive gondola on the Zugspitze and there was breakfast, a lovingly hand-sewn goodie bag with a nice T-shirt and much more for everyone. The tour led from the Eibsee to Garmisch and Mittenwald to the picturesque village KrĂźn, the place with the typical Upper Bavarian historic wallpainting that already impressed Barack Obama at the G7 summit. Next we rode along the deep blue Walchensee over a village called VorderriĂ&#x; into the beautiful Engvalley high up to about 1200 meters altitude, where the checkpoint was placed. Somewhat below, directly at the brook, the pilots were able to fortify themselves with snacks and drinks and of course to discuss the experiences. Here in the so called Ahornboden are thousands of partly over 600 years old, gnarled maple trees scattered across the valley - an impressive backdrop. Partly via private toll roads to Mittenwald, Leutasch and back via Garmisch to the Eibsee. What a Ride! Full report, many pictures and videos can be found here:

One of the main aims in designing the SIP performance shock absorber was to provide optimal damping during the rebound phase. The rebound damping ensures a clean and even shock absorber expansion at a controllable rate. This causes, for example during braking, the front end of the scooter to recover softly and remain controllable without acting like a pogo stick! Shock bushes are made out of polyurethane rubber. These shock absorbers are available with two separate grades of stiffness : 60 PSI: for comfortable riding or race track useage 100 PSI: for XXL guys or lots of luggage. The stiffer the damper the higher the PSI rating (the quicker the rebound). Another important factor is the choice of spring. We recommend springs with at least a 25-33% increase in stiffness.

State-of-the-art adjustable aluminium CNC SIP Performance shock absorber. Technical refinements such a a 14.0mm thick rise bar, hardened materials provide additional stability in the suspension. Continuously variable spring preload and adjustable rebound damping. Mounting hint for Vespa V15-33/VM/VN1T ->06000: The SIP Performance shock absorber can also be fitted with the Vespa models with separate spring / shock absorbers. Therefor the upper shock absorber seating (#20008990) of the Vespa 125 VN1T 06001-> VN2T / ACMA 2 ° / 150 VL / VB1 / VD / VGL1 / GS models must be mounted.

SHOCK ABSORBER SEATING Shock absorber seating, produced by SERIE PRO by BOLLAG Motors. This adapter enables the use of all rear shock absorbers available for the Vespa PX range of scooters in combination with Vespa wideframe models. The kit includes a CNC machined bracket produced using a tough aluminium alloy that can be attached to the swing-arm assembly. This includes a rubber bush and a pressed tube for the M10 bolt as part of its design. A M10 bolt, nut and washer are also included as part of the kit.

The new SIP tubeless rim, allows you to use tyres without a tube. In case of a puncture a sudden air leak will be prevented, the air pressure will decrease slowly. Blown tubes will be a thing of the past. So will valve tear offs or punctures due to tubes beeing trapped between the rims during assembly.

The SIP tubeless rim combines the advantages of a classic cast rim with a high production accuracy and quality. The design is a tubeless double hump rim. This hump prevents the tyre from slipping into the rim well in case of a puncture. The rim rotation is very precise and the surface finish is perfect. The valve is included and already mounted.

CABLE SET SIP PERFORMANCE Occasionally only a relatively small impulse can have a great effect, which is especially true of the technology involved in tuning vintage Vespas. The fact that control cables play an essential role in their overall function is no big secret. Hardly another form of transport includes such long and awkwardly-routed control cables in its design as a classic Vespa or Lambretta scooter. This can quickly lead to vague feedback from the various connected components and stiff operation. When correctly set up these problems can be minimised, although more modern scooter types remain a lot more user-friendly to the rider. Due to the longer service intervals sometimes involved, extensive research has been carried out in the quest for improved control cables and a number of manufacturers are currently producing types with updated performance characteristics. SIP decided to take on the challenge by starting from scratch with a completely fresh and modern design. These SIP Performance control cables were conceived to be stateof-the-art, introducing a new level of operational control, riding dynamics and handling to any vintage scooter type. To satisfy these high requirements we first carried out extensive research and testing to establish our possibilities within the constraints of current vehicle construction technology. We then adapted the results to the conditions presented by vintage metal-bodied scooters.

REQUIREMENTS:

Following the introduction of our all-new cables we were positively surprised at the revolutionary progress achieved over the cable kits currently on the market by others. The SIP Performance control cables completely exceed our initial aims and increase the performance of an ageing brake drum system enormously, which in turn increases rider safety immensely. The gears can now be precisely selected every time, with shorter travel required. The clutch becomes much easier to dose exactly while requiring less force at the handlebar lever. The throttle cable can now glide along easily and exactly, especially useful while closing the throttle operation grip. The improved operation of often neglected components by this set of cables provide a minor advantage which has a huge knock-on effect with much improved safety, rider-friendliness and ultimately, the maximum riding enjoyment that can be attained from every vintage geared scooter. Torsion resistant / PE lining / pre-lengthened/ welded ends A simple update that noticeably improves the operation of vintage scooters. Do not forget to order new cable-nipples and adjustment bolts. All cable types, apart from those lined with PTFE, require regular lubrication.

Rust-free stainless steel cable inners. Welded cable-inner ends. All outer cables lined with a PE material. 7 x 7 single-strands for the throttle cable-inners, extremely flexible even when sharply bent. 19 single-strands for the clutch, brake and gear control cable-inners for increased durability. Gear control cables are pre-stretched to ensure precise operation with a rounded profile. Clutch and both brake cables are pre-lubricated.

Sei Giorni replica “Heritage” is not a commodity, you either have it or you do not. Vespa scooters have a glorious history, mostly due to a few particularly attractive models. The Vespa Sei Giorni factory specials represent both the myth and legend of sporting scooters. The Sei Giorni (six days) trial rally took place in the early fifties and PIAGGIO were victorious with their ‚PIAGGIO Squadra Corse‘ racing team, defeating all potential rivals. These ‚Ufficiale Piaggio‘ were all factory race machines, produced a mighty 7 PS from their 125cc motors and are now known as the Vespa Sei Giorni models.They are considered as the ultimate goal of any serious Vespa collector or museum, with only ten to fifteen examples still in existence worldwide. If such a Vespa becomes available then only at prices around €150,000! Our sales assistant, Olli, decided to realise his personal scooter dream and build himself a road-going replica of the legendary Sei Giorni Vespa models.

“It all began with the purchase of an original Sei Giorni fuel tank from 1953. I bought it from my friend and mentor Robin Davy, who no longer needed it. I was always fascinated by the Sei Giorni Vespa models but ownership is difficult, mostly due to their price and rarity. This inspired me to build a replica model, identical to the original factory Vespa models. The project kicked off early in 2009. After a couple of months, I discovered a Vespa Messerschmitt T2, providing an initial basis. It proved ideal due to its external control cables, a similarly slender frame spar along with the typically bulbous sidepanels. Then the panel beating stage was reached, legshield remodelling, sidepanel modification and attachment, along with numerous other details had to be taken care of. The modified V30 steering column, with its trailing-link suspension, required a lot of attention to detail. The adaptation and narrowing of the steering assembly, complete with a quick-action throttle, was especially time-consuming.My main incentive in this project was to include as many original components as possible and managed to organise an original

single-seat, footboard strips, horn, rear light, headlight and various original fixings for my replica Vespa.The Sei Giorni models profile is dominated by the fuel tank and the special wheels, which were especially difficult to source. They have the model-exclusive dimensions of a 10” brake drum combined with an 8” wheel rim! As I intended to use this scooter as an everyday runabout and commuter the engine had to look as original as possible but still provide decent road performance. An ideal solution was provided in the form of a GS 150 engine fitted with a 172cc Quattrini aluminium cylinder combined with an external Polini CP carburettor. The four-speed gearbox and the motors 20PS ensure a sporty riding experience! The paintwork required a few artistic tricks for additional authenticity. My Sei Giorni is inspired by an almost seventy year old Vespa, it posed a real challenge to provide the aesthetic icing on the cake. Emery paper, numerous slightly different shaded layers of paint and acids came to use and the result was truly astonishing! Dream realised and now the result of my efforts will be parked in front of our SIP store this summer, as my daily ride!”

contact & directions How to find us: We are very conveniently located in the industrial estate 'Frauenwald' in Landsberg am Lech. For those arriving on the A96 motorway, we recommend to take the exit Landsberg Nord and drive into town. At the first intersection turn right until the next traffic light, turn right and go straight. Shortly after the highway bridge at Audi/Mercedes, turn left and continue straight through the round-about. Approximately 300m further we are on the right side. When travelling on the motorway-like B17 exit Igling is recommended. Follow the signs 'Industriegebiet Frauenwald'. About the Franz-Kollmann-Straße, which merges into the Fahrenheit-Straße and then in the Celsius-Straße turn right at the company Vissmann into Emmy-Noether-Straße. After about 200 meters you will find us on the left side.
