Use the Chamber to build your knowledge
Knowledge is power. That statement makes sense coming from the President of Augustana College, and it also makes sense for doing good business, too. Membership in the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce arms you with knowledge to help you be better informed for your own business and customers.
Championing business causes is perhaps one of the most underrated benefits of Chamber membership. Talking about meetings and briefings and tax code isn’t nearly as celebratory as a ribbon cutting, but we believe strong advocacy for business is essential to maintain our healthy business climate.
In the last three months alone, the Chamber has offered opportunities for our members and volunteers to learn more about healthcare reform, the City’s proposed sign ordinance changes, and funding for the state’s highways and bridges. Chamber staff attends meetings like these — and more — to stay on top of issues throughout the year. When necessary, we hold briefings
We’re there to be the eyes, ears and voice of the business community. We’re there so you don’t have to be. “
ROB OLIVER
for our members or share information via email or print publications to help educate our membership. We don’t always take positions on issues, but we always want people to be educated. We want to invite all parties to the table to develop solutions and to be informed.
Looking ahead to the 2013 Legislative Session, you can attend Legislative Coffees to hear from our Sioux Falls area legislators, attend a one-day trip to the state’s capital to see the legislature in action and get a regular e-bulletin from our lobbyist team tracking bills and issues during the session. If you have a question about a piece of legislation or want to know the status of a bill as it works its way through the process, the Chamber is there to serve as your resource.
I’ve heard more than one member acknowledge that they don’t have the time or the ability to travel to Pierre to track a bill important to their industry or business but that they’re able to stay informed because of the Chamber.
It’s not just in Pierre that we represent Sioux Falls area business — we attend every Minnehaha County Commission, Sioux Falls City Council and Sioux Falls School board meeting. We are there so our local elected officials can also be held accountable. We’re there to be the eyes, ears and voice of the business community. We’re there so you don’t have to be.
We know you care about your business and the business community at-large.

ROB OLIVER 2012-13 Chair of the Board
We know you’re busy, too. I encourage you to take advantage of the ways the Chamber shares information with you — either by attending some of those upcoming events to interact with elected officials or by reading our publications. Use this issue of Chamber News to become familiar with the newlyelected legislators and how you can contact them. We all want to continue to build a better Sioux Falls — remember that the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce is on your side. And that is powerful.

Winter Wonderland celebrates 10 years
Mayor Mike Huether officially flipped the switch to light up Falls Park on Nov. 16, followed by fireworks in celebration of the 10th Annual Winter Wonderland at Falls Park. The event attracts people to the city’s namesake each year during the holiday season.
Decorated in thousands of beautiful holiday lights, garland and lighted displays, Falls Park hosted thousands of people who enjoyed cookies, hot chocolate, horsedrawn wagon rides, ice sculptures, music, a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a look at Santa’s two live reindeer and a few zoo ani-
mals at this year’s kick-off event. The trolley also provided a free ride from downtown Sioux Falls to the park.
The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau would like to thank the following kick-off event co-sponsors: ClickRain, Identity Marketing, Monarch Sales, Panther Graphics, and Quality Inn & Suites. The CVB would also like to acknowledge the following businesses for their in-kind contributions to Winter Wonderland: Holiday Inn City Centre, Hy-Vee, the Sioux Falls Convention Center/Global Spectrum, Ovations Food Service, the Sioux Falls Arena/

SMG, Sioux Area Metro, Sioux Falls TwoWay Radio, the Sioux Falls media, and United Rental. Special recognition goes to the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Department and the Sioux Falls Police Department for their outstanding efforts in making Winter Wonderland a great success!
Falls Park will continue to “light up” nightly through Jan. 6, 2013. The Visitor Information Center will be open daily. See the ad on page 5 for specific hours during that time.

Fireworks light up the 10th Annual Winter Wonderland kick-off event at Falls Park, which drew several thousand visitors.

CVB promotes city in advance of national hosting
The Sioux Falls CVB traveled to Jacksonville, Fla. Oct. 28-31 to attend the 2012 Small Market Meetings Conference (SMMC) for the second year. The CVB is partnering with the Sioux Falls Convention Center and the Sioux Falls Sheraton Hotel to host SMMC Oct. 6-8, 2013, with overflow rooms being held at the Springhill Suites by Marriott.
At this year’s conference, the CVB staffed a booth on the Marketplace floor, conducted one-on-one pre-scheduled appointments with meeting professionals and sponsored the closing luncheon at the conference to pre-promote for next year’s conference in Sioux Falls. The Small Market Meetings Conference is the only organization in the travel industry dedicated to the growing niche of meetings looking at smaller markets.
“Sioux Falls is thrilled to have the opportunity to host Small Market Meetings! We will guarantee a highly professional and supportive CVB working to make 2013 one

of the best conferences ever. We look forward to welcoming everyone to our beautiful community in 2013,” said Sioux Falls CVB Executive Director Teri Schmidt.
Past SMMC host cities have included Shreveport, La. and Little Rock, Ark. For additional information contact the Sioux Falls CVB at (605) 336-1620 or go to www.VisitSiouxFalls.com/SMMC2013.
Sioux Falls CVB attends Rejuvenate Marketplace
The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) was among 1,200 faith-based meeting planners and suppliers that attended the 5th Annual Rejuvenate Marketplace in Columbus, Ohio Oct. 22-24.
Rejuvenate is a reverse tradeshow offering prescheduled one-on-one appointments with religious meeting planners over a two day marketplace. This is the second year the CVB attended the show and so far has produced seven RFPs (requests for proposal) for future business for Sioux Falls.
The CVB was included in the October/November issue of Rejuvenate Meeting Inspiration magazine, the official conference book for the event, by purchasing the
Program & Schedule tab in the conference book. The advertisement was the only featured tab in the book. With this purchase the CVB was also allowed to put an informational piece in the registration bags for meeting planners. The CVB created a “What’s New” sheet that highlighted Sioux Falls, including the new Denny Sanford PREMIER Events Center, the River Greenway Project, St. Joseph Cathedral restoration and hotel updates and renovations. This extra exposure for the CVB gave the planners an opportunity to read what was happening in Sioux Falls prior to their oneon-one meetings and reach the planners that may not have requested a meeting with Sioux Falls.
The 2013 Governor’s Conference on Tourism is scheduled for Jan. 16-17, 2013 in Pierre. The tourism conference will feature wo great keynote speakers for conference attendees. These two sessions with Maxine Shapiro and Stuart “Twitchy” EllisMyers will have you ready to get back to work, implementing tactics for success in 2013 Tourism Conference registration now open!

Using the Legislative Guide How to contact your legislators
The center pages of this issue of Chamber News include the contact information for Sioux Falls area legislators and what they feel to be the challenges for the 2013 session. Sioux Falls is included in all or part of seven districts (9-15); districts 6, 16 and 25 have also been included because they are in the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Save this legislative guide and use it during the session to contact Sioux Falls area legislators. You can also reach legislators in Pierre. To leave a message for a Senator, call (605)
773-3821. To leave a message for a member of the House of Representatives, call (605) 773-3851.
Another great resource is the Legislative Research Council (LRC) website: http://legis.state.sd.us/. You can use this site to search bills by number, subject or the member who introduced the bill. You can also track committees and floor activities and find existing laws. The LRC site also contains contact information for every member of South Dakota’s House and Senate.
Advocacy: a membership benefit
Your Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce sends a lobbyist to Pierre to advocate for business interests — a great benefit of your Chamber membership. The Chamber also hires a contract lobbyist to assist in these efforts. The South Dakota Legislative Session is only 38 days in duration, so it is imperative to be prepared. For your information, below is the process the Chamber uses to determine the 2013 Legislative Platform and Policy Statements.
In order to determine its legislative platform, the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce surveys its members about issues affecting business. The survey results, staff research and direction from the Chamber’s Issues Management Council help decide the direction the Chamber will pursue when lobbying at the legislative session. Recommendations are given to the Board of Directors to approve. The 2013 Legislative Platform will be on the Dec. 19, 2012 Board of Directors meeting agenda. Once approved, it can be found at www.siouxfallschamber.com under the Advocacy button.
In order to formulate a platform and policies to help guide staff and lobbyists during the session, each year the Chamber meets with several committees: the Tax Council, Business Transportation Committee, and Issues Management Council. These commit -
tees each consist of 20 or so volunteer business leaders. Working with the staff, they help craft the platform and policies, which are then adopted by the Chamber’s Board of Directors. These positions are then communicated to the Chamber membership and legislators. In addition to input from the committees and the Board, the Chamber also asks for input from officials from the City Sioux Falls, Minnehaha and Lincoln counties, the Sioux Falls School District, and local legislators on issues important to them.
Throughout the legislative session, members will regularly receive the electronic publication Legislative Lookout , which provides insight from lobbyists about issues being studied by the legislators. All Chamber members and employees can receive this e-publication at no charge.
For more information about the issues survey or the legislative session, contact the Public Affairs & Communications Department:
Bob O’Connell, Public Affairs & Communications Director and Lobbyist, 373.2004
Nikki Gronli, Graphics & Communications Specialist, 373.2022
Amy Smolik, Marketing & Communications Manager, 373.2054
Sara Weber, Public Affairs & Research Manager, 373.2006
The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce asked legislators in Districts 6, 9-16 and 25 to submit contact information and their goals for the 88th Legislative Session; these are their responses.
The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce also tracks bills and communicates pertinent information to members via the electronic bulletin Legislative Lookout. Legislative Lookout is designed to provide quick insight into the latest legislative developments in Pierre. The bulletin is filled with specific issues of interest to the Sioux Falls community, such as school aid
funding and regional tourism. Legislative Lookout also focuses on general business issues of importance to South Dakotans, including transportation, tax policy, economic development and the state budget. As a Chamber member, you can sign up for this free bulletin by contacting (605) 336-1620 or sweber@siouxfalls.com and providing your email address.
Chamber members who have specific legislative questions can contact lobbyist and Public Affairs & Communications Director Bob O’Connell at (605) 336-1620 or roconnell@siouxfalls.com.
