Sioux Falls getting ready to host extension agents in 2015 The Sioux Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) will be traveling to Mobile, Ala., to pre-promote for the National Association of County Agricultural Agents (NACAA) Annual Meeting and Professional Improvement Conference, which will be held in Sioux Falls July 12-16, 2015.

The CVB attended the 96th Annual Meeting in Overland Park, Kan., where they showcased Sioux Falls and were unanimously awarded the 2015 Annual Meeting.

The 2015 convention will be the 100th year anniversary of the association and the CVB expects to surpass previous attendance records for the event because of the centennial celebration.

The NACAA is a professional organization geared toward extension educators and other professionals who work in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and natural resources, 4-H youth development, community development, administration, aquaculture and Sea Grant, and related disciplines.

CVB sales team returns from Washington, D.C. sales blitz The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) traveled to Washington, D.C. in June to conduct their annual D.C. Sales Blitz. The sales team prescheduled 32 appointments for the duration of the fourday blitz. Staff met with a record number of meeting planners by conducting oneon-one appointments and group meetings with 39 individuals, as well as two sit-down meetings with South Dakota Senators Johnson and Thune.

The sales team will work with local South Dakota organizations and associations to connect with the appropriate local business leaders in effort to get Sioux Falls in the bid process for future events.

The annual sales blitz is designed to interact with national meeting planners, introducing them to the idea of booking a convention, meeting or event in Sioux Falls.

Washington, D.C. is the nation’s top location for organizations and associations.

Swim event to bring more than 500 athletes to Sioux Falls Sioux Falls Snowfox will be hosting their 2014 Independence Invitational on July 10-13 at Frank Olsen Park in Sioux Falls. There will be 15 to 20 teams competing in the event.

Teams from Winnipeg and Ontario, Canada will be in attendance as well as teams from Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, and teams from around South Dakota.

The American Legion is the largest veterans organization in the U.S. with more than 3 million members. The South Dakota Department of the American Legion was organized simultaneously with the national organization.

Sioux Falls to host American Legion 100th Anniversary Convention

The American Legion Department of South Dakota selected Sioux Falls as their Centennial Celebration host city. The South Dakota State Convention will be held in Sioux Falls June 6-9, 2019.

Legion posts from across South Dakota will gather for the centennial celebration which is expected to be the largest annual convention in South Dakota history.

Approximately 300 attendees are expected for the 2019 State Convention, which is expected to generate more than $314,000 in estimated economic impact to the city. The convention will be held at the Sioux Falls Convention Center and Sheraton Sioux Falls hotel.

The National Centennial Convention will be held in 2018 in Minneapolis, kicking off a 15-month celebration of the American Legion. Minneapolis was also the host city of the first convention in 1919,

Legionnaires participate in many community activities such as parades, memorials and dedications. Sioux Falls is home to American Legion Post 15. The official activities and interests of the American Legion are in four areas: rehabilitation, including all aid to veterans; Americanism; child welfare; and national security. One of the Americanism programs with South Dakota roots is American Legion baseball, now a nationwide program. It was conceived at the South Dakota State Convention in Milbank in 1925.

Transportation conference to be held in Sioux Falls for the first time The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce that the South Dakota Department of Transportation has selected Sioux Falls as host for the 2015 State Airports Conference in March.

This is the first time the two-day event will be held in Sioux Falls.

The swim competition will have more than 500 athletes competing over the course of the invitational. Olympian Ed Moses will be at the event July 10 and July 11. In the 2000 Olympics, Moses was a Gold medalist on the 4X100 meter medley relay team as well as a Silver medalist in the 100 meter breaststroke. He will be doing a showcase swim on July 10 and and signing autographs the morning of July 11.

More than 100 attendees will be coming to Sioux Falls, where they will be gathering downtown at the Holiday Inn City Centre. More information will be announced at a later date.

Prior to working for the Skyforce, she worked at Lifetime Fitness and OSR Physical Therapy. Talcott will also serve as the Manager of the Force Dancers.

Joe Millar was hired as the Media/Public Relations Director for the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Millar graduated from the University of South Dakota in 2013 with a degree in Sports Management. Millar will serve as the liaison between the local and national media and the Skyforce. Prior to joining the front office staff, he served as a Business Operations Intern during the 2013-14 Skyforce season.

New state laws go into effect July 1 When the Chamber of Commerce is in Pierre to advocate on behalf of business, the work always boils down to specific bills and our then efforts to kill them, fix them or support them.

Some bills are bad ideas that simply need to be defeated, while resisting the temptation to try to fix a bad bill. Some bills are good ideas, but need some work to assuage various interests. Some bills simply need to be passed.

Typically, bills passed during session go into effect July 1, with the exception of those with emergency clauses on them.

Thus as the state’s new fiscal year begins, new laws are coming on the books. Below are a few of the more significant new laws from the 2014 session.

HB 1013 (Good Earth State Park) – This bill increased the authorized funding for the development of a visitor center at South Dakota’s new state park based on a donation from the Robert and Rita Elmen Foundation.

HB 1045 (Revise Unemployment Rates) – This bill revises unemployment rates for wages paid after Jan. 1, 2015 and is projected to save employers some $11 million per year.

HB 1070 (Sunset Large Project Tax Refund Program) – This bill both eliminated the prior incentive program that provided excise tax refunds for large programs and directed the nearly $19 million balance of the fund to the Building South Dakota Fund.

HB 1142 (Technical Institutes) – This legislation could have far-reaching effects as it specifically permits funding for technical institutes by local governments (i.e. cities, counties, school districts). In addition, it presents the potential for a new governance structure for the state’s technical institutes. Finally, it established a technical institute equipment fund and transferred $1.5 million into the fund plus appropriated $250,000 for building maintenance.

HB 1175 – (USD Research Park at University Center) – This bill appropriated $1 million for planning and infrastructure to support the development of the Research Park in northwest Sioux Falls on University Center land.

The General Bill also included funding to freeze tuition and mandatory fees oncampus at South Dakota universities and provided a $5 per credit hour tuition buydown for state’s technical institutes.

HB 1200 and HB 1201 (Bank Franchise Tax) – These two bills revised the apportionment formula and changed the way net operating losses are carried forward.

The main meeting space of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce has a new name — the Betty J. Ordal Conference Center. Previously, the room was referred to as the Conference Center.

This recognition was approved by the Chamber’s Board of Directors at the June 25 Board meeting, which was also Ordal’s last day of work after 48 years of service to the Chamber. Ordal held a number of positions at the Chamber, most recently Membership Services Director.

The resolution approving the name change was part of a full day of activities celebrating Ordal’s legacy at the Chamber.

Chamber’s advocacy efforts include Issue Briefs

One of the many benefits of Chamber membership is the advocacy work the Chamber conducts on behalf of the business community.

When issues arise that affect business, your Chamber responds by communicating in a variety of ways — one of which is through the development of issue briefs.

These briefs, usually two- to three-pages in length, are designed to be a clear, concise and objective way to better understand an issue.
