FOREWORD
Dear Reader, The year 2019 was eventful as we continued to collaborate with our members, partners and the broader cancer community to jointly raise more awareness in the field of geriatric oncology on a global level and to accomplish greater results for better older cancer patient care. While our members worked with unfailing commitment in their respective institutions to better identify vulnerabilities that are not routinely captured in oncology treatments of older cancer patients, our activities offered numerous opportunities of collaboration to further improve clinical practices, where and when possible. The year 2019 at SIOG was marked by increased international cooperation guided by the SIOG code of ethics sensitive to national and regional priorities in geriatric oncology. With an increase in the ageing population worldwide, strengthening the capacity of human resources for health (HRH) for the benefit of older cancer patients has never been more important. Our leadership therefore ensured that SIOG championed the top priorities in geriatric oncology and related actions to advance clinical care and research in this area.

Our key opinion leader meetings and events brought together the leading experts in geriatric oncology from around the globe to stimulate the growth of scientific evidence in geriatric oncology across diverse multidisciplinary settings. The SIOG reputation is founded on the trust we have earned from the patients that our members treat around the world. We are proud to say that each one of our members is delivering the promise of the founding leaders of SIOG. For SIOG, to continue to play this role, we will ensure to meet the demands of our network and partners, contributing to solutions driven by the health agenda of country partners. Going forward, our efforts will follow our new strategic direction, as we embrace new opportunities of growth for SIOG as well as meet the challenges ahead of us. ANNUAL CONFERENCE The SIOG Annual Conference is one of the most highly demanded geriatric oncology conferences, offering a multidisciplinary platform for health professionals involved in the treatment of older cancer patients. Over the past 18 editions, SIOG has contributed to the progress in education, clinical practice and research for the benefit of the global ageing population with cancer.

Hosted at the prestigious International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG) on November 15-16, 2019, the theme of SIOG 2019 was integrative oncology – leaving no one behind. The SIOG 2019 Annual Conference in numbers : 420 delegates from 40 countries 15 scientific sessions with a total of 62 talks 61 faculty members from 19 countries 230 abstracts submissions 3’273 tweets and 5'671'000 impressions

REGIONAL MEETING SIOG regional meetings bring together representatives from health institutions, research centers, academics, civil society organisations as well as policy makers to support and facilitate education and training of health professionals in the area of geriatric oncology and to address practical questions about engaging with implementing organisations. The overall objectives of these meetings are to identify at the regional levels, where capacity strengthening efforts need to be concentrated and what can be improved through partnerships to catalyse such actions.
SIOG Asia Pacific (APAC) 2019 hosted on 15-18 May 2019 in Manila, Philippines, was a call to all countries in the region to scale up their commitments to improve the care and treatment of older cancer patients. The meeting was a joint effort between SIOG and SEAMEO TROPMED & Public Health Network.

The SIOG 2019 regional meeting in Southeast Asia took place under the official slogan “Achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) - formulating medical polices for older cancer patients”.
SIOG APAC 2019 Stakeholders’ Consultation Meeting discussed the SIOG Priorities Initiative for the strengthening of Human Resources for Health (HRH) in Geriatric Oncology. The Consultation Meeting carried two-pronged objectives: 1) To make recommendations for increased trained health workers and quality healthcare management at different levels of the health system, with due regard to the ageing population living with cancer, their diversities in culture, needs and expectations for whom these services are intended in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and 2) To make proposals for principles, and practice for the delivery and uptake of relevant health policies that are compatible with equitable and sustainable development and minimised economic burden of health with regard to the ageing population living with cancer.
"Advances in technology and treatment bring new hope, the current reality is a wide gap between what older people need and what the workforce can provide. POLICY MEETING SIOG continues to push the boundaries worldwide, for those in the ageing population that are afflicted by cancer, both scientifically and through policy thought leadership. Contributing to evidence-informed decision making, SIOG policy discussions aim to boost constructive commitments from countries for improved treatment and care of older cancer patients.

Policy Meeting of the SIOG Top Priorities Initiative November 14th, 2019 at the United Nations, in Geneva Switzerland
Aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, the World Health Organisation’s strategic policy goals, and the forthcoming Decade of Healthy Ageing starting in October 2020, International Federation on Ageing (IFA) and SIOG jointly hosted a meeting at the United Nations in Geneva. The objective of this meeting was to perform a multi-stakeholder review on the progress towards achieving UHC 2030 focusing mainly on the development and preparation of health professionals for the ageing population with cancer. Leaders and experts engaged in high-level discussions on cancer control, non-communicable and lifestyle disease programmes, role of research as well as policies that address older cancer patients.

ADVOCACY Clearly articulated policies on cancer in ageing is lacking in many contexts. This most likely challenges countries to effectively translate research outputs and knowledge into healthcare practices, which address not only health issues of the older cancer patients but also their access to treatment, equity and financial protection.
SIOG Top Priorities Initiative A landmark multi-stakeholder SIOG consultation for the ageing population with cancer BACKGROUND
After nearly a decade of the publication of the SIOG 10 Priorities Initiative, 2019 was the year for SIOG to discuss the scientific evidence and highlight the challenges and lessons learnt in the field of geriatric oncology.
METHOD
SIOG conducted a multi-stakeholder consultation on reviewing the priorities in geriatric oncology. It brought together key stakeholders to take stock of developments in geriatric oncology, to assess theses achievements and to provide new action-oriented set of recommendations for improved care and treatment of older cancer patients.
OUTCOMES
The international consultations fostered a spirit of closer collaborations between various stakeholders and across countries and it gave an impetus for the coherent implementation of trainings, as well as educational and advocacy programmes for Cancer in the Ageing within the framework of the objectives of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) 2030, a priority work programme of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The goal of SIOG Education is to integrate geriatric oncology in the curricula of medical and nursing education. In 2019 SIOG’s international multidisciplinary faculty provided specialised and comprehensive clinical updates, continuing education, trainings and courses to professionals from 22 different countries. The 2019 SIOG Advanced Course in Geriatric Oncology was hosted in Europe (Italy) in partnership with Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and in South-East Asia (Philippines) in partnership with SEAMEO TROPMED & Public Health Network.

‘We are excited to bring the highly regarded SIOG Advanced Course in Geriatric Oncology to Asia for the first time – and doubly excited that we are doing it in the Philippines. We hope that this would be the start of a national Training of Trainers effort to get clinicians more informed on the complexities of treating older patients with cancer’. Practical resources for the integration of geriatric evaluation into oncology decision-making and guidelines. The year was marked with a series of educational collaborations between SIOG members working closely through regional initiatives and activities in order to facilitate benchmarking and the exchange of good practices within and across regions for improved patient outcome. With the continued efforts of SIOG members to encourage integrated approaches of collaboration between oncologist and geriatricians, an annual interdisciplinary workshop was launched in Geneva. It was conducted on the topic of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments across different contexts and clinical settings. The organising faculty members have successufly provided the propelling force for the creation of an intensive educational experience in geriatric oncology welcoming participants from across disciplines, international teams and institutions.

The SIOG National Representatives (NRs) Commitee is one of strategic bodies of SIOG, with an important role in linking SIOG’s core with members, institutions and experts around the globe. In 2019, SIOG’s National Representatives enhanced the society's reach in more than 80 countries by linking the core activities of SIOG with renowned experts and institutions treating older cancer patients. The creation of the SIOG UK Group marked the begining of a bold step towards the expansion of SIOG's contextualised commitments in the field of geriatric oncology.

SIOG boasts a multi-disciplinary faculty of over 300 geriatric oncology experts covering numerous cancer-related areas for older patients. SIOG's Journal of Geriatric Oncology, and our collaborations with international cancer educational organisations allow us to produce scientific and educational resources, guidelines and tools that help strengthen the geriatric oncology workforce development. Our constantly updated scientific resources cover a full spectrum of relevant topics. SIOG education handbooks on geriatric oncology and online elearning modules are tailored closely to the needs of national and regional contexts.
