A warm welcome to dry bulk’s annual global summit

Welcome to the inaugural Geneva Dry - we could not be happier that you’ve decided to spend the next couple of days with us for what we sincerely hope will be a highly topical, interactive and entertaining summit.

Each of the founders of Geneva Dry has been in the maritime events space for around a quarter of a century and we’re all agreed there are way, way too many shipping events around the world. You could probably find some envelope-opening occasion or three on Christmas Day!

However, when you look at industry verticals dry bulk is not well served. What I mean by this is look at other shipping segments - if you attend just one container event that’d be TPM in Long Beach, likewise for cruise that’d be Seatrade in Miami and for LNG there’s Gastech. These three bring every rung of their respective supply chains together. Up until now dry bulk did not have a similar must-attend event.

Why Geneva?

Landlocked Geneva could lay claim to being shipping’s most important city, yet it goes about its business with little fanfare. It’s important to keep in mind, Geneva is the world’s biggest commodities trading hub. But beyond all thatand this is important - it’s a very nice place to visit - a destination people we talk to say they’re excited to be visiting - and over on page 43 we’ll give you some places you really must try and visit this week.

Confirmed speakers from trading houses, miners, shipowners and a wide variety of service providers from around the world will hopefully ensure the next two days prove useful and worth your time.

And we’ve made sure that as with any top event there’s no shortage of networking opportunities - from lunches, to all-day coffee breaks, evening cocktail parties and the fact that we have an official drink, LVX Geneva Dry Gin (more of which on page 47).

This is our first Geneva Dry and we are very keen to always be improving our offering, so if there’s something you’d like to see in the next edition - April 28 and 29, 2025 - please do reach out to me or any of the other organisers. We’re all ears as we set out to make this event THE annual summit for the global dry bulk industry.

The perfect ingredients for an industry get-together

Geneva Dry co-founder Subra V reckons he has identified the ideal recipe for a successful event over the next two days

Subra V

Welcome to the inaugural Geneva Dry - we cannot wait to put on a great show for you and are very excited by what will unfold over the next couple of days.

As you might have noticed we have an official drink at the event - and we’re indebted to LVX Spirits as well as our two evening cocktail sponsors - Arrow and SSY - for their involvement in providing some social lubrication to networking proceedings.

In keeping with this theme I thought I might provide a cocktail recipe of sorts into what I see - after 25+ years in the events business - as the ideal ingredients to make for a perfect event, something that requires your attention as much as us organisers to ensure the best results.

First and foremost, any industry gathering needs a very healthy dash of interaction. At Geneva Dry, you won’t see a power point, you won’t see a set speech. What you will see is me and my colleagues hopefully running around the conference room with microphones as those from the floor contribute as much to debate as our esteemed panellists. Genuinely, what we want from you, dear delegate, are your own thoughts, comments, insights, and questions from what you’ve been hearing on stage. Raise a hand at any time and we’ll be alongside with a mike.

An extra shot or three of interaction comes from the foyer where you picked up this magazine. Here there’ll be all day coffee and tea served, a chance to meet and greet throughout the conference, while LVX is on hand with gin tasting - yes, you heard that right, gin tasting!

Another key ingredient is ambience and I hope you’ll agree that the Hotel President Wilson offers that in abundance, while we will try our utmost to foster a friendly, fun atmosphere in which to enjoy and make the most of the next couple of days.

Peer networking is something we take to heart dearly. We want bonds to be made, competitors to fraternise even if it's once a year, to make Geneva Dry the occasion where the dry bulk supply chain meets, greets, and takes a breath outside the daily work routine.

Any good cocktail I think requires just three key ingredients - so for my third and final one, I’d add a healthy slice of topicality. The content you will swig down on Thursday and Friday has been carefully curated with speakers who represent decision-makers, well-organised segments representing the core in dry bulk shipping thoughts and market insights.

Just like in the conference hall over the next two days if there is anything you think we can do better, anything you’d like to see added - or sieved out - from the show, do please get in touch with me.

Give us your thoughts, comments, insights, and questions

The ideal location for a global showcase

Florence Schürch, secrétaire générale of SUISSENÉGOCE, welcomes delegates to our inaugural event

On behalf of SUISSENÉGOCE, the Commodity Merchants Association, I extend a warm welcome to all delegates attending the inaugural Geneva Dry event. We are delighted to see taking place in Geneva such a gathering of industry leaders coming together to explore the future of dry bulk shipping.

Established in 2006, SUISSENÉGOCE represents the interests of companies active in commodity trading, shipping, trade finance, insurance, law firms, and affiliated services within the Swiss commodity sector.

Switzerland is one of the world's leading centers for commodity trading, combining expertise and innovation with its numerous universities, including a master’s degree in commodity trading, so it is only natural that the Geneva Dry shipping conference should be held in Switzerland.

The Geneva Dry event, much like our work at SUISSENÉGOCE, is grounded in the belief that exchange among peers and communication are key to navigating the complexities of our sector. This event offers a unique opportunity for stakeholders across the dry bulk supply chain to discuss critical challenges, share innovations, and explore potential collaborations that could lead to sustainable growth and efficiency in the industry.

We are gathered here not just to discuss the future of dry bulk shipping but to shape it through our shared knowledge and collaboration. Geneva Dry addresses crucial issues such as sustainability, digitalisation, and the evolving roles within our industry, aiming to foster a future where efficiency, transparency, and sustainability are at the forefront.

As you join us at Geneva Dry, you are also invited to delve into the latest insights from the commodity world through our annual publication, the Commodities Magazine. This year, we are thrilled to present the untold story of everyday commodities. This edition shines a light on essential commodities like wheat, coffee, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and copper. Our magazine serves as a crucial platform for raising awareness about the commodity trading industry’s vital role in everyone’s daily life.

As we commence this exciting event, I encourage you to engage fully with your peers, participate in the discussions, and explore the innovative solutions presented. The connections you make here could form the basis of lasting partnerships and breakthroughs in the commodity sector.

On behalf of SUISSENÉGOCE, I am confident that Geneva Dry will mark a significant step forward for our industry, driven by our collective efforts to innovate and collaborate. We are proud to contribute to this event’s success and look forward to the advancements it will inspire in the commodity trading and shipping sectors.

Wishing you an insightful and productive experience at Geneva Dry.

Tech discussion points

Ahead of Geneva Dry’s Day One spent covering all things digital, we canvassed top names on the key themes the industry is grappling with this year

The shipping industry stands on the “threshold of a transformative era”, blending digital and human intelligence prowess in aid of optimal management, says Captain HS Swaminathan, co-CEO of shipmanagement at Synergy Marine Group.

“The rise of digital continues to be a powerful tool for our industry, from using it to plan more efficient routes to creating decarbonisation plans,” says René Kofod-Olsen, the CEO of V.Group.

Thomas Zanzinger, CEO of Ocean Technologies Group (OTG), reckons that now is a time when a lot of emerging technologies start to accelerate at an exponential rate.

“Connectivity is the number one enabler of real time data exchange,” Zanzinger says. “The growth in and predictions around the number of owners that are planning to roll out low Earth orbit satellites (LEO) in the short term, will lead to

significant opportunities in terms of how the world fleet operates.”

Peter Schellenberger, the founder of Novamaxis, a shipping consultancy, believes that the disruption of communication improvements through LEO satellite providers and their adoptions by all major shipowners and managers around the world will bring about a raft of new services and products, which, he says, will finally provide similar conditions to onshore, assisting communications, crew welfare and health and improved vessel operations.

This year, the maritime industry is set to witness an even more pronounced surge in data usage onboard. Inmarsat Maritime witnessed a 31% surge in data usage by commercial maritime vessels in the first half of 2023, on top of a 56% increase from 2021 to 2022, and this trend will continue to move upwards, according to Marco Cristoforo Camporeale, a senior

director at the company.

“Ship operators are realising they can use enhanced speed capabilities for vessel operational improvements in ways we have not seen before,” says Camporeale. “This trend toward the concept of a floating office will accelerate with implementation of cloud-based applications and streamlined data transfer between vessels and onshore facilities.”

The maritime tech landscape is witnessing a consolidation as start-up software companies begin to merge to achieve global scale in digitalisation.

“We will see larger incumbent organisations, like class societies, to partake in joint ventures or acquire these start-ups, amplifying their capabilities and scaling up industrywide digital transformation,”

Camporeale predicts, suggesting that this trend indicates a broader shift towards holistic solutions preferred by shipowners and managers. Imagine a ship

Artificial intelligence

The trend most people surveyed are keen to highlight relates to artificial intelligence (AI), something that is clearly going to be one of the hottest topics in maritime tech this year and an important plank of discussion at Geneva Dry.

“These technologies promise a seamless, personalised customer experience, automating tasks beyond booking services reliant on manual documentation,” says Jeremy Nixon, the CEO of Japanese containerline Ocean Network Express.

Setting the scene for the endless possibilities afforded by AI adoption, Vikrant Gusain, the CEO of Dubai-based Dockendale Ship Management, muses, “Imagine a ship where ChatGPT becomes a virtual crewmember, continuously analysing vast datasets, weather patterns, traffic patterns, and navigational hazards. This AI companion not only enhances real-time decision-making but also serves as a tireless assistant, offering insights, suggestions, and predictions that empower the crew to navigate with unparalleled precision.”

“Even though AI is still at a relatively nascent stage in shipping, all stakeholders – ranging from shipmanagers, financiers, shipowners to classification societies – they all find AI technologies to help them create

The trend toward the concept of a floating office will accelerate

more efficiency in the supply chain,” says Gautam Chelleram, the chairman of KC Maritime.

“In shipping we have produced more and more data but have rarely managed to really capitalise on its potential,” points out Zanzinger from OTG. “Very quickly we will start to see AI powering data analytics and being an enabler to data-based decision making.”

Grigoris Lamprou, CEO of Procureship, a Greek online marketplace, reckons that this year shipowners and managers will increasingly turn to data to inform their decision making capabilities, particularly when it comes to costs.

Enhanced use of AI and big data in predictive maintenance, route optimisation, and cargo management can improve operational efficiency and reduce costs, according to Arthur English, the CEO of Norwegian owner, G2 Ocean.

Robots running ships

Autonomous shipping, while steadily progressing, will be concentrated in selected countries, according to Inmarsat Maritime’s Camporeale, who tells delegates to keep an eye out for developments in Japan in particular where plans are underway for fully autonomous cargo

ships operating by 2025 through a consortium of stakeholders including class, shipyards and operators.

Danilo Fumarola, the CEO of Monaco shipowner Gestion Maritime, reckons robotics will find large applications in two main areas; safety and energy efficiency. Cargo operations, cargo hold cleaning, and cargo ventilation will be some of the examples where robotics will have roles to play.

Enhanced use of blockchain technology is expected by G2 Ocean’s English, who also thinks that electronic bills of lading – with or without use of blockchain – will have a major uptake in 2024 due to recent legislation.

Many people polled for this survey see increased deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for real-time monitoring of cargo conditions, vessel performance, and environmental factors to improve decision-making processes.

“While all these technologies have been in development for some time, a combination of maturing technologies, regulatory changes, environmental pressures, and evolving industry needs could make 2024 a significant year for widespread adoption within our sector,” concludes English from G2 Ocean.

Dry bulk’s long tail cause for concern in meeting green goals

Chambers, co-founder of Geneva Dry, ponders the problems the fragmented dry bulk industry faces in reaching new IMO environmental targets

Here's a stat that makes shipping’s green ambitions hard to reconcile with reality. The average shipowner owns just 4.5 ships. Alright, I’ll grant you, half a ship is no use to anyone, but, regardless, having less than five ships to your name is not much in terms of financial muscle to bring about the ambitious changes agreed last July at the landmark 80th gathering of the Marine Environment Protection Committee at the International Maritime Organization.

Shipping’s long tail is going to be a very serious stumbling block to achieving decarbonisation goals, and it is something exercising the minds of regulators, NGOs and service providers alike.

While the container and gas shipping sectors are comparatively consolidated giving them access to greater capital for the green transition, the dry bulk and tanker segments remain hugely fragmented and it is these myriad one-, two-, three-ship strong companies around the world that will cause the biggest headaches for the industry as a whole to meet the now much tighter environmental goals pencilled in for 2030, 2040 and 2050.

Smaller fleets may mean fewer opportunities to trial new technologies, less data, smaller technical departments, and less financial scope to tolerate reduced

earnings or additional downtime in the name of R&D.

A recent survey of the owners of more than 14,000 ships, conducted by the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation and Boston Consulting Group, found that only 27% of those polled had a solid decarbonisation road map in place. The survey also found that owners of fewer than 20 ships were dominated by conservatives (55%), followers (42%) and just 3% were deemed frontrunners when it comes to decarbonisation.

Unequal access to decarbonisation exists between the larger, more established, and the smaller owners, ultimately impacting access to asset investments and fuel offtakes within a structurally fragmented ecosystem.

The long tail witnessed in the dry bulk and tanker trades – combined

with their tramp characteristics – is something that is exercising regulators and think tanks around the world.

This subject is also forming the core of Geneva Dry’s hour-long decarbonisation session scheduled for 11.30am on Friday, a panel which features Matthieu de Tugny, the president of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, who neatly summed up the long tail dilemma our industry faces in a recent article for Splash in which he noted: “A good credibility test for any decarbonisation strategy for global shipping is whether it works in practice for the owner of one, two or three ships.”

Ultimately, in my humble opinion, regulators will need to use much more stick than carrot to ensure the tail does not whip shipping’s green targets.

A good credibility test for any decarbonisation strategy for global shipping is whether it works in practice for the owner of one or two ships

Some useful tips to help you cruise around this gorgeous city

It's not for nothing that we’ve sandwiched our event between Labour Day and a weekend. You, lucky delegate, have the chance to extend your stay and see more of this wonderful city and its surrounding area.

Right in front of you right now spouting 140 m up into the air, using 500 litres of water per second at 200 kmh is the Jet d’eau, a true icon of Geneva. You can actually walk right up to the gigantic water fountain via a mobile footbridge which can turn into a staircase when boats pass underneath.

If you head out of the hotel, turn right, walk along the lake’s shore for 15 minutes and take a bridge just after the Four Seasons, that’ll bring you to the Old Town. From Place du Rhône to Place de Neuve, you will be enchanted by this utterly charming slice of Switzerland. Visit

CITY GUIDE 43

Your gastronomic guide

This Swiss city caters for every taste

You don’t have to walk far for culinary delights in this Swiss city.

Located within this hotel, the Bayview's kitchens shine thanks to the talent of Danny Khezar, who revisits with elegance and gourmet flair the classics of French cuisine, under the mentorship of the wellknown chef Michel Roth.

Among other French eateries we recommend, Le Comptoir Canaille, in the heart of Jonction, which takes inspiration from Lyon’s traditional restaurants, while for a fine Italian experience head out to Plainpalais and to Seppia, a very welcoming Sicilian bistro.

On a similar water vibe, the Bateau-Lavoir on the Quai des Lavandières, not far from the banking sector and the Place de Bel-Air, is a floating coffee shop, which is moored along the Rhone, enjoying a unique architecture and a very exceptional situation. The Bateau-Lavoir has become a real Geneva institution where every day three seasonal dishes of the day are served, based on fresh and local products. In the evening, tapas and traditional Swiss dishes are served: rösti, fondues or Valais sausages.

For a “chalet” atmosphere, go to Les Pâquis at the Hôtel Edelweiss, with its uniquely decorated

Swiss specialities are a must during your stay in Geneva. To taste them, head to Le Gruyérien, a Swiss institution par excellence, or to Buvette des Bains des Pâquis for its famous fondue and its breathtaking views of Lake Geneva. The Bains des Pâquis has been a public pool since 1890, 18 years after its creation, and has remained in the city’s and the people’s hands ever since. There is also a sauna, hammam and Turkish baths as well as spaces for women only.

restaurant, or to the Auberge de Savièse for its traditional raclette. In the Old Town, don't miss the Restaurant des Armures. A few steps from the Grand Théâtre and the Parc des Bastions, you can taste the inimitable emincé de veau à la Zürichoise and its home-made rösti, in the warm and freshly renovated setting of the Cave ValaisanneChalet Suisse

For lovers of Asian cuisine, Na Village is a guaranteed get-awayfrom-it-all Thai experience in the

district of Saint-Jean, close to the Cornavin railway station and close to the river Rhone, featuring a true exotic and traditional garden, a river and small ponds as well as wooden cabins creating an enchanting setting and a timeless break for sampling traditional Thai food.

Tsé Fung, meanwhile, is the first Chinese Michelin-starred restaurant in Switzerland taking diners back to 1930s Shanghai. With its spellbinding decoration, it offers an idyllic setting in the heart of La Réserve.

And for a drink?

Once again, for those who are keen to keep things very local, this hotel has plenty of options for a nice drink in a stunning setting. Take the Pool Bar, for instance, featuring a lovely terrasse and chic views while the Glow Bar, just a few paces from where you picked up this magazine, caters to every taste - and will also be playing host to our own drinks and lunches today and tomorrow.

Heading out to party? We recommend the Jonction quartier - it’s lively, and features many fun bars. La Jonquille is a pub with craft beers and gigs while nearby Casa Tiki has superlative cocktails as well as some very decent fusion cuisine.

As well as the normal tea and coffee, delegates can enjoy something a bit different at Geneva Dry. We are delighted to welcome an official drinks sponsor, something you might not see at A N Other shipping event.

LVX Geneva Dry Gin has a table at the event just outside the conference hall and is offering gin tasting, as well as coming up with specific cocktails for the two evening cocktail receptions.

LVX Spirits was born in 2019, the brainchild of Quentin Verne, a young financier who fell in love with gin during his time in London and decided to dedicate himself full time to the gin-distillation process.

LVX Geneva Dry Gin is made

from Swiss grain alcohol and nine high quality botanicals sourced in Switzerland and around the world, asserting itself with floral and spicy notes.

The nose is bright and aromatic. On the palate, angelica and juniper flavours first stand out, balanced by the elderflower that provides this gin with its distinct sweetness and rounded mouthfeel. The finish is long and delicately peppery, attesting to its traditional London Dry distillation process.

Commented Grant Rowles, commercial director at Geneva Dry, “As with all our events, we’re always looking to make the delegate experience enjoyable and different.”

Today LVX is one of Geneva’s

best-loved homegrown spirits brands, with a young and growing team. Its official HQ and playground is La Distillerie Bar Lab, where the company combines its boutique gin distillery with a sleek yet friendly bar.

Want to know more about gin and distillation? Come join one of LVX’s Gin Lab Experiences.

This fun workshop takes place in the company’s distillation lab, where all LVX Spirits are born. You’ll learn about gin and its history, create your own recipe from a wide range of botanicals, try your hand at distillation in the company’s individual copper stills, and take home your precious bottle of gin with a bespoke label.

Down the Hatch

Legs, the Bow Thruster, Fine to Port, Off Hire, Three Sheets and OpX were some of the nautically themed drinks ideas that came forward, with Geneva Dry reserving special praise for James Turner’s Scrubber Discharge and Sal Mercogliano’s Down the Hatch, while also admiring the simplicity of Greg March’s Geneva Dry with a Splash of tonic.
