the toolbox, then you can take both hands and take the other singers in the choir 'by the hand' and together lift the music to new heights. The warm-up is an ideal space to strengthen the interaction between our singing technique, musicality, creativity and our ability to engage in meaningful musical communities that can create synergy, meaning and joy of singing.

PROGRESSION We have created a handbook that covers a wide range in terms of difficulty and accessibility. The chapters offer exercises that can be put together for a tailored warm-up program, and which in this way support the singers' individual and joint musical and vocal development based on easy-to-understand and effective physical exercises, catchy melodies, delicious sounds and fun musical activities. These exercises help to create new understandings, develop the singers' musical potential and strengthen the joy of singing and the unity of the group and choir. The book is written for those who work with singing and choral music, and we have gone to great lengths to make the exercises easily accessible, while backing them up with solid and proven theory and knowledge about the human voice and anatomy. In working with this book, we were happy to collaborate with Cathrine Sadolin and the Complete Vocal Institute regarding the description of singing technique. We have also consulted with other of our talented colleagues about the singer's body, and we have obtained the best exercises we know of.

THE CREATION OF THE BOOK The idea of writing a warm-up book has been bubbling between us for many years, and we are happy and proud that you now have the finished book in your hands. The book is written by Tine

Fris-Ronsfeld and Kristoffer Fynbo Thorning. Our collaboration is a dynamic ping pong, where ideas and thoughts are exchanged and developed in close cooperation. Many of the thoughts behind the book are based on experiences from our collaboration and musical experiences in the vocal group Postyr, in the choir Vocal Line and with the choir LYT (formerly Groovy Voices), as well as from our bachelor's, master's and soloist studies at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus and Aalborg (RAMA). Many of the ideas also come from our work as teachers, together and separately, at workshops, conventions, courses and longer teaching courses at colleges, music schools and talent schools in Denmark and abroad over the past 15 to 20 years. Tine always carries a sharpened pencil and scribbles educational thoughts and musical ideas in her notebooks, which she subsequently processes and finally structures and refines together with Kristoffer, who is always good for a new creative angle and a sharp eye for form and mediation. A special thanks to Line Groth, who has sparred with us in the initial phase of the project and contributed to the book by sharing her own exercises and the exercises she knows about. Through her network, Line has also helped us find authors, helped us apply for rights to several songs and exercises in the book, and in collaboration with Kristoffer recorded piano tracks for the book's exercises. We hope that this book will be an inspiration to many and that it can create musical development, positive social communities, and joy of singing. Enjoy! Tine and Kristoffer

PR EFAC E WE LOVE WARM-UP EXERCISES We love to sing and use our voice and body to express music. Over the past two decades, we have sung hundreds of concerts in choirs and vocal groups together and taught in most parts of the world. Warm-up exercises have therefore been a large part of our everyday musical lives in concert, before choir rehearsals and singing lessons, and when we have taught other singers and choir leaders. We found each other in the music and choir environment in Aarhus almost two decades ago and have subsequently experienced the joy of singing together and thereby developing our singing voices and musicality. Since then, we have been fortunate to travel as soloists, choir singers and teachers. During that time, we have experienced vastly different singing cultures, languages and teaching approaches and continuously gathered inspiration.

THE HEART AND THE TOOLBOX We have two hands. The first one, we use when we have musical problems that need to be solved. Then we reach into our toolbox and tackle analysis, technique and practice. There are many musical parameters that have to be balanced when singing vocal music, and it takes both time and concentration to get the details right. It is important and meaningful to refine the technique. However, working with all our tools must not become too one-sided, because then we risk that the music may work on paper, but that it will appear mechanical, lifeless and irrelevant to the listener. We must also remember to use the other hand: the hand that we put on the heart. With that hand, we connect to ourselves and explore what it is we sing about, why it is important to share this particular music with others, and what it is we want to illuminate and pass on. This process can be

intuitive or conscious or a combination, but either way, it is essential to the artistic expression. It is the hand on the heart that comes up with the ideas, with the meaning, the content and the sense of necessity and relevance. It is that hand that, so to speak, 'tells' the other hand which tools should be used to give shape to the ideas and bring them to life. If you try hard, you might be able to make music with only one hand - either the one or the other - but if you use both hands, you can really get things moving, accomplish something and create something significant and valuable that can make a difference for yourself and for others. When you have put your hand on your heart and dug deep into

I NT R O DU C TI ON ARE YOU WARM ENOUGH?

WITH OR WITHOUT

Warm-up exercises are games and exercises that warm up the body, voice, heart and brain and bring people of all ages closer together through singing, music and movement. In this book, we have collected exercises and thoughts on how the warm-up can be both a greenhouse for faellesskab (see page 10) and the joy of singing and a playful learning space for musical and vocal development.

Some singers insist that they cannot sing unless they are warmed up. Others, on the other hand, insist that they do not need to warm up at all - that the voice just works by itself - that it is just as warm as the rest of the body: 37 degrees! Is it possible that both experiences are true? Yes, indeed it is.

WARMING UP There are many good reasons to warm up before you start singing. The warm-up helps us wake up our body and voice, helps us to create presence of mind and helps us to connect with the people we are together with and gives us a sharper mental focus. At the same time, the warm-up will establish a mental confidence in the specific musical and social context we are part of, and therefore helps to create better conditions for us to get into an optimal state for learning, namely 'flow'. The warm-up reminds us of what we already master musically and vocally, both individually and as a group, and thus gives us a starting point from which we can take the next learning steps. In choirs, the warm-up helps to support and develop the individual singer's musical abilities and singing skills, while also helping to establish and consolidate a musical faellesskab (see page 10). The warm-up can motivate and inspire us and help to support the joy of singing and the desire to express ourselves musically as an individual in a group or in a choir.

8

Some people have a good general muscular tone and good singing technique habits, which means that they may not feel a great need to warm up physically before singing, especially in their young years. For them, the warm-up can be both a nice way to connect socially and focus mentally and also be a learning space, where they can fill up the toolbox with useful knowledge for those days when they don't feel on top or where they are challenged to take the next learning step. Other people have weaker muscle tone and less vocally trained voices. For them, it will often be an advantage to have a physical warm-up that can balance the body, and a vocal warm-up that can remind them of good habits and build on their singing technique.

M USCLE TONE

Our muscles have a 'baseline tension,' or muscle tone, which is the tension that is constantly present in the muscles - both when we are active and at rest.

OUT OF THE HEAD AND INTO THE BODY The exercises in this book are based on singing, music and movement and are set, as far as possible, in a playful and imaginative framework that helps the participants to mentally get out of their heads and into their bodies. In the good warm-up, we tune into each other and forget for a while where we came from and where we are going next, while each singer connects with their bodies and feels welcomed and appreciated in the group here and now.

WI TH THI S BOOK YOU CAN: strengthen singing and musical skills enhance and inspire the joy of singing strengthen and develop a sense of faellesskab (see page 10)

Faellesskab (see page 10), personal development, presence, self-esteem, creativity and musicality are strengthened when we put ourselves and each other in play with warm-up exercises as a playful framework. Physicality and social interaction are a natural part of many of the exercises. But central to all the warm-up exercises in the book is working with the individual's voice and musicality in interaction with the other members of the group. We would like to strengthen the individual's musical and singing skills while also strengthening the group's ability to sing together in a dynamic and sonorous vocal balance, where singers, like birds in a flock, intuitively respond to each other in mutual respect and confidence of themselves and the other singers. The exercises therefore aim both to strengthen the singers' musical and vocal awareness and skills and to strengthen the bonds between the singers in a way that supports the quality of life, the joy of singing and moments of sheer happiness.

I NT R O DU C TI ON WHAT IS FAELLESSKAB? In Denmark we have a number of special words that are not possible to translate into other languages. The word and phenomenon 'faellesskab' is really important to understand Danish culture and thereby also the cultural foundation on which this book is founded. In English the words community, unity, social environment, co-create, togetherness, belong, love, family, friendship, safety, fun, cooperation, purpose, trust, respect, connection, have in common, wholeness, synergy, tribe, team-feeling, all contribute to the understanding of the Danish word 'faellesskab' without getting af concise grasp of the feeling. The word 'Faellesskab' has a complex meaning and it carries both

a noun and a verb inside. It is a thing and also something you do. 'Faelles' means to share or to have in common. 'Skab' directly translates into 'closet', but it functions more like the 'ship' in the English words friendship and relationship. Be it 'Closet' or 'ship', it describes something that can contain, carry or hold something that we put inside it. Memories, history, culture, dreams, love. But 'skab' also has another meaning: 'At skabe' means 'to create' and put together with 'faelles' then you are creating something together. 'Faellesskab' covers something that we share, something that we have in common and we create the faellesskab'together, meaning that everyone contributes to it in one way or the other. We will use the word 'faellesskab' throughout the book, when we mention or refer to the concept of community, unity and togetherness.

FAELLESSKAB, JOY OF SINGING AND PLAYFUL LEARNING We consider singing as a form of expression and as a way of socializing. Building a trusting relationship and a positive sense of faellesskab is essential if the music is to flourish and faellesskab is to be meaningful. For us, the path to a joyful singing experience at all levels is paved by the feeling of 'faellesskab' combined with a playful approach. Games and playing are not just nonsense. It is a very special phenomenon that we, as teachers and artists, take very seriously. It is the source of immersion, learning and creativity. Not just for children, but for everyone. Games and playing, are not driven by the hope of wealth and fame or the fear of punishment or consequences. It carries its purpose in its own right and is inherently boundless with its own sense of time, place and perception of who we are and who we can become. It takes place within a specific framework, is driven by imagination and brings no fear and no mistakes - just new starting

points for somersaults, high jumps and unexpected turns. In our view, playing and games are a prerequisite for creativity and innovation. The deep concentration, motivation and openness that can be achieved through this, is the most open approach we can create to absorb new knowledge and develop new musical and singing skills.

CONFIDENCE AND FAELLESSKAB If inconfidence creeps in, the nature of playing changes or stops altogether. We simply lose the joy of singing. It is extremely important for both play and music that a mutual trust and respect is created in the group. In some groups, the participants already know each other for better or worse. In other contexts, a degree of uncertainty can be detected in the meeting between people. Some participants may be hesitant to throw themselves into the music, while others are bubbling over with enthusiasm and eagerness to get started. Still others may have their thoughts somewhere else entirely, and this may make them tired, edgy or unfocused. The warm-up can be the social space where we set the framework and strengthen our faellesskab. We set the scene for the playful game we are about to start and give everyone in the group an opportunity to arrive physically, mentally and socially and to 'tune in' with the others through a musical handshake, eye contact, smiles and harmony. The good warm-up can help prepare and anticipate some of the musical and vocal challenges to be addressed later, providing a shared and more informal learning space. In this way, we can prepare and practice some musical sub-elements in a safe environment, so that we can use them as stepping stones in challenging passages later in the programme. The warm-up can thus be the starting point for both social bonding, playful learning and joy of singing.

THE GOOD WARM -UP

creates and supports a healthy and inspiring faellesskab that gives us the desire to express ourselves musically and creates a space to be who we are, in mutual respect for each other. creates common ground, presence and focus. awakens our body and voice. reminds us of what we have already mastered vocally and musically. creates space for contemplation, creativity, play and selfforgetfulness. creates a safe learning space where we are inspired and invited to develop new musical and vocal skills one step at a time. anticipates challenges and serves as a common reference for the singers in the further rehearsal process. creates contagious energy, synergy and joy of singing or as we call it: SINGERGY.

I NT R O DU C TI ON SINGERGY Some would say that the purpose of music is music itself. However, in order for a group of musicians to perform at the highest level, they need to be able to function socially together, and therefore team building and strengthening collaboration is essential to musical work. Others would say that they use music as a means to achieve a goal, such as wellbeing, team-spirit or and the joy of singing. We are interested in the interaction between the goal and the means. We have experienced that an incredibly strong synergy - or 'singergy', as we call it - can arise, when we let the two views on music play together. When we are alternately, and sometimes simultaneously, driven by both music and faellesskab. One moment we are motivated by the thought of singing a concert, and we practice so we can excel in the performance. The next moment we are driven by the joy of being together with people we feel connected to, and we practice because we want to be part of the 'game' and because we feel responsible and would like to contribute to the faellesskab. We can illustrate this with two straight lines, each pointing to a different goal. If we put them together, they will form a twisted spiral that, like a tornado, lifts us up to new heights and creates singergy. We can also think of the lines as a DNA strand, where the middle of the strand contains our identity as a group - who we are, and what we share that connects us. The lines between the two strings are our collective knowledge, experience and skills, which together form a ladder that we can climb, one step at a time. What awaits us at the end of this spiral? Maybe it's just more of the same that we've already experienced on the way there, more music and faellesskab. Or maybe it's the pure joy of playing music and singing, and a sense of happiness fueled by a great common energy. A place we want to explore ourselves and share with others.

MUSIC SS MUSICASASA AMEAN MEAN

FLOW When we play music or sing together, we follow the same tempo and form and become part of the same atmosphere in a shared soundscape. Building a piece of music is similar in many ways to building a machine. Each part of most music making and playing and singing together, has a specific function and is an important mechanic cog in the music machinery. In order to function, everyone must understand their own role and be able to perform their task, but also work together crosswise as a unit or a well-maintained machine. Music and singing require us to be on the same wavelength, and through this we establish contact, cooperation and faellesskab. When the music is right, we can get into a state where we feel equally excited, calm and focused. We have a feeling that 'it's lit up', 'it's going like a breeze', 'we’re forgetting time' and that 'we can hardly stop ourselves again'. We are in flow! Flow can be described as being in the optimal state for learning, creative development and innovation. This is where our learning becomes easy as in a game, and where we feel the deep concentration, strong motivation and a sense of happiness that comes from experiencing that FLOW what we are doing right The theory of flow was formulated now is deeply meaningful. by the Hungarian-born American The state of flow can psychologist Mihaly Csikszentoccur when the difficulty mihalyi in his book 'Flow - The of the activity we are Psychology of Optimal immersed in is matching Experience' , read more our skills. DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY

If you work 1-to-1 with a student, you can relatively easily adapt the exercises so that they match the student's skills and needs for challenge. If you work with choirs or teams with several people present at the same time, adaptation immediately becomes more difficult. Everyone in the group comes with their own prerequisites, and it can therefore be difficult to get into the flow if everyone in the group is given exactly the same task. Some will think it's absolutely perfect, others will think it's too difficult, and others will get bored and start coming up with good ideas about how we usually do it, how we could also do it, or how others should do the exercise or game. This problem has been taken into account in the design of this book, as many of the exercises have a naturally built-in progression and can be performed at several levels at the same time, thus enabling as many people as possible to experience being in flow.

STEP 1 BREAKING THE ICE

HARMONY AND UNIFICATION We have found that using icebreakers and warm-up exercises, we can train the ability to get into flow. This creates a solid foundation for musical development and makes it easier to find the feeling of flow in other contexts where we have to learn something new or to be creative. This applies regardless of whether you are young or old, professional or amateur. That is why our book starts with a chapter of icebreakers that can help to lift the participants into the flow and establish a playful learning space from which the rest of the warmup, lesson or choir rehearsal can build. It is when we sing that most people experience the musical flow at its best. In singing together, we meet ourselves and each other through a musical connection and feel that we are part of something bigger. In a combination of text, melody and rhythm, we can get in touch with an undercurrent of emotions that connects us with the other singers in the choir. The result is a sense of harmony and unity. This is one of the reasons why singing is particularly effective in bringing us closer together.

STEP 2 BODY, BREATHING AND SUPPORT

STEP 3 AWAKENING AND TRAINING THE VOICE

THE FIVE STEPS A good warm-up can take many different forms and structures, but it always helps to give the singers a good introduction to the social and musical space and this helps to create psychological security and focus. We have good experience in dividing our warm-ups into five steps. That's why the Warm-up book is divided into five sections, each marked with a color to make it easy to navigate around the book.

STEP 4 SINGERGY = SING + SYNERGY + ENERGY

STEP 5 FOCUS WARMING UP - A HANDBOOK ON CHOIR WARM-UP, VOICE TRAINING AND SINGING TOGETHER - BY TINE FRIS-RONSFELD AND KRISTOFFER FYNBO THORNING

15

I NT R O DU C TI ON - CONTINUED STEP 1 - BREAKING THE ICE Choral singing is based on cooperation, and cooperation is based on trust. Therefore, we believe it is absolutely essential that the warm-up contains exercises or icebreakers that help build trust and faellesskab and at the same time establish focus and help the group enter a creative flow together. Sometimes we need help to have both our head and the heart (see page 3) with us before starting a choir rehearsal. In these playful warm-ups, all group members get the opportunity to welcome and introduce themselves to each other, make eye contact, learn names, shake hands and create a pleasant atmosphere. They help to highlight the importance of each individual group member, while at the same time shedding light on the group's differences and points of similarity.

STEP 2 - BODY, BREATHING AND SUPPORT The voice is part of our body, and therefore our posture, breathing and support system have a great influence on the timbre and functionality of our voice. This is the reason why it is essential to cover the physical work in the warm-up. It can either be an opportunity to remember the good habits we already have, or to optimize some of what we are already learned, but it can also be an opportunity to learn something completely new. When we work with physical exercises, breathing and the support system, it also helps us to energize and create presence and concentration in the group.

STEP 3 - WAKING UP AND TRAINING OF THE VOICE It's nice to get in touch with our own voice before we dive into the work with vocal harmony and blending. Some of the exercises that you will encounter in this chapter are a sort of check-in for the voice. We get the opportunity to ask ourselves how our own voice actually feels today. Am I on top of my game? Or rusty? Other exercises give the singers an opportunity to remember how different voice functions

16

are sung in a healthy way and give the group the opportunity to practice certain singing techniques, techniques that they can or will use later in the choir rehearsal for a particular song or arrangement, and which are helping to support their individual development as singers.

STEP 4 - SINGERGY = SING + SYNERGY + ENERGY It is wonderful to feel the rush and energy that arises when we sing together. In this section, we're going to unfold our ears and start working with choral timbre and harmonies as the voices interplay with each other. The exercises in this section will allow you to achieve many different things at the same time. We call it 'singergy' when we sing together and experience the synergy that occurs between the rhythm, the phrasing of the melody, the harmony, the feeling, the energy and the joy of singing, This section is filled with harmonized melodies of various kinds that practice our musical skills while helping to gather the energy in the group. Here there is an obvious opportunity to focus on phrasing, timbre and dynamics, and it is often in this part of the warm-up where the shoulders drop, smiles spread, energy condenses, the brain tunes in and the hearts begin to beat in time with each other. The singers are now well on their way into a musical flow filled with the joy of singing, immersion and a strong sense of team-feelingfaelleskab. These exercises can be used as a solid foundation for the rest of the choir rehearsal.

STEP 5 - FOCUS If there is time and desire, you can extend the warm-up by focusing on various musical parameters that help prepare the singers for specific musical challenges. These can be skills that will also come into play later in the rehearsal, or which help to strengthen the singer's own musicality and musical ability over time. The exercises

can be placed at the end of the warm-up, building a bridge to the first part of the actual choir rehearsal, or as a completely new work phase in direct extension of the warm-up. Sometimes it will also make sense to insert a focus exercise as a prelude to the sight-reading exercises, and other times you may choose to place the focus exercises after the break, thus creating renewed concentration and immersion in the second half of the rehearsal. We have divided this section of the book into five focus areas: Rhythm, groove and timing Intonation Blend, timbre and phrasing Input and output Performance This classification is strongly inspired by The Real Group and RAMA Vocal Center and their work with choral methodology and 'The Intelligent Choir'. The list of focus points is not exhaustive and one could also have chosen to focus on, for example, dubbing, improvisation, concert design or interaction with technology such as microphones, effects and loops.

OTHER PUBLICATIONS

In 2014, the two of us, Tine and Kristoffer, founded the micropublishing company Postyr Experience, which has now changed its name to Singergy Publishing I/S. It started with a long talk over coffee in a café in Aarhus, about how nice it would be to have a collection of icebreaker exercises for our everyday life as music teachers and workshop leaders. Since then, we have produced more than 10 different publications in 4 different languages.

ICEBREAKERS - A Practical Approach to Group Dynamics (English)

In parallel with our other work and activities, we publish and manage the various book publications ourselves. They all have a clear focus on dissemination, accessibility and faellesskab and deal in one way or another with learning and finding the flow through music, singing and movement.

BRYD ISEN - En legende tilgang til fællesskab (Danish)

The books are aimed at anyone teaching music and anyone working with groups. These might include music teachers, singing teachers and choir leaders, and others working in the creative and performing arts, such as dancers and actors. But it could also be a wider group of primary and secondary school teachers who need brain-breaks and good vibes in their classrooms, and sports coaches, social workers and integration workers who need to create a strong faellesskab based on safety, trust and curiosity. This can also be managers and team builders who focus on creating workplaces where there is team spirit, psychological safety and job satisfaction in everyday life and in times of change and the development of new ideas and concepts.

LES BRISE GLACE - Creativité et dynamiques de groupe dans les pratiques artistiques (French) - A collaboration with Cepravoi

'Warming Up' is published by Singergy Publishing and supported by Korsangernes Fællesråd, Brandbjerg Højskole and Statens Kunstfond, and the publisher collaborates on other publications with the French choral organization Cepravoi and the Irish choral organization Sing Ireland.
