Making it count On Day 1!

Anticipation filled the air as the sun shined down on a new school year on August 14, 2023. Swarmed by both a sense of excitement and nervousness, students held their breath, awaiting to see what this new year would bring their way. However, students soon realised that there was little need for any apprehension, having the tools needed to take on the journey ahead — all thanks to the collective efforts of SSM’s administration, level heads, teaching and non-teaching staff.

Over the summer, advisors filled the rooms with unique decorations: inspiring quotes, fun photos, informative materials — establishing a comfortable learning environment for the new year. A comprehensive threesession orientation was also held to acquaint teachers with the student handbook. Lesson plans were also organised, alongside lively ice-breaking activities for the first day of school.

Training sessions were then held — enabling teachers to craft effective learning activities and materials for their upcoming classes. The ultimate goal was to create a productive classroom that would ignite students' desire to learn as soon as they enter.

“My classroom should be a place where my students could learn and feel safe while having fun,” Primary 5 advisor, Teacher Jennifer, states.

Beyond positive student-teacher relationships, forging strong bonds within the faculty was equally as important to a successful year! They engaged in a range of fun team-building activities, creating new relationships and developing old ones along the way.

One of the games played was “Catch the Tail” wherein the person with the “tail” must dodge the other members, who aim to steal it.

Teacher Jaya, the new advisor of Secondary 3A, fondly recalls a delightful moment during the game; where one teacher was unaware of the rule to simply run and instead, inadvertently covered his tail.

Teachers may look tough in the classroom, but they are still humans who are also prone to challenges when it comes to interacting and socialising.”, emphasises Teacher Jocelyn, new teacher and IBDP 1's advisor. She aspires to fulfill the responsibilities of helping both the returning and the new students adapt to the IB Diploma Programme. “I hope all the students would easily adjust and surpass all the challenges ahead, but most importantly I hope that each one would feel accepted.”

Teacher Jennifer also shares her aspirations for her students, wishing to see them flourish into independent individuals, “I really hope that my students at the end of the school year will be able to become independent. Become an independent learner, do things on their own, and take responsibility for their work.”

The teachers play a pivotal role in guiding students on their academic journey, recognizing that it is not solely about reaching one's destination but the valuable lessons garnered along the way. With never ending support from their teachers and parents, the journey to the next stop may not be entirely seamless, but will surely push students to flourish into better individuals.

Pinoy Pride!

Jose Rizal once said, “Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan, hindi makakarating sa paroroonan.” (“He who does not embrace where they come from, will never reach his destination.”)

In commemoration of Araw ng Wika, Singapore School Manila prepared a myriad of cultural activities, last August 25, 2023. The SSM community came together, adorned in a diverse array of Filipino attire showcasing both modern and traditional costumes, with the aim of gaining a a deeper appreciation for Filipino culture.

Preschool students dove into the enchanting world of the story "Mabait na Kalabaw” (The Kind Buffalo), deepening their understanding of the Philippine’s national animal through a puppet show.

Lower Primary students also embarked on a literary adventure, joined by none other than the author of children’s book, “Super Maya”, — Ms. Bambi Rodriguez — herself. During this activity, Teacher Dorothy recalled the feeling of delight as she witnessed her students being immersed into the rich currents of the Filipino language.

As the day unfolded, Upper Primary students graced the stage with a display of talents, weaving together the threads of nursery rhymes and folk songs, more specifically “kundiman”. The spotlight then shone upon Teacher Anne and Teacher Julia’s melodic Kulintang performance, where they summoned the rhythms of the Mindanao percussion instrument.

With the expertise of Sir Darius, a Baybayin aficionado, students broadened their understanding of the ancient language, fostering a newfound appreciation for its wonders.

As a full Filipino IBDP 1 student, Azriel Valdepeñas shared his personal insights: highlighting the importance of learning this endangered writing script. He explained that unearthing Baybayin allows us to show off the rich culture of the Philippines with pride. Another Filipino student from Secondary 3B, Paige Garcia, commented that experiencing cultural activities with those who are of the same nationality is more than just an eye-opening experience. She further expounded that the feeling of celebrating it with her non-Filipino friends was especially significant to her as she was able to learn and share her knowledge at the same time.

In line with the event’s cultural preservation goal, Teacher Keizzer, mentioned the quote: “Tangkilikin ang sariling atin!” (“Enjoy our own”), promoting appreciation for local language, art, and customs. In addition to this, Teacher Dorothy expressed that exposing students to diverse activities enhances their cultural knowledge.

SSM’s Home Education Programme students also joined hands in a whirlwind of activities. Primary 1 to 3 students played traditional Filipino games such as ‘sipa’ and ‘piko’, and adorned themselves in colourful traditional attire.

Creativity surged in the hearts of Primary 4 to 6 students, crafting their own books in pure Tagalog, and enlightening their taste buds with scrumptious Filipino snacks, such as ‘halo-halo’ and ‘puto’. Meanwhile, the Secondary to Preuniversity students created their own flavourful journey, cooking up traditional Filipino dishes and capturing its essence through the cameras.

With the help of the heartfelt insights of guest speakers and range of enriching activities, students fostered a deeper sense of belonging and love for the country. From the language to its cuisine — Filipino culture remains a multifaceted wonder for all to enjoy!

Small Acts, BIG IMPACT! By: Charly Lam

In an unrelenting society where apathy is the norm, acts of graciousness are the new weapons in our arsenal!

Singapore School Manila armoured up and prepared for this year’s Random Acts of Kindness, held from August 23, 2023 to September 25, 2023.

The first week started off in a flash with Kind Hearts Bingo! Students were encouraged to fill all boxes with their kind acts, big or small. Small acts of kindness include simply holding the door open for someone, or helping a friend out with schoolwork!

Meanwhile, a big act would mean collecting clothes to donate to charity. This activity was paired with Gratitude Letters, wherein senders would write special letters to someone they’d like to express appreciation towards.

Aiden Bonzo of S1A recounted his deed of giving his cousin books, saying he recalled him being extremely thankful. “He doesn’t have a lot of books, so when I gave them to him, he was very appreciative of the gesture – I think this will impact him by still being constantly aware that kindness is present in the world.”

Acts of kindness are, at their barest essential, selfless; carried out without expecting anything in return. Despite this, it doesn’t necessarily mean the giver gains nothing. “Whenever I see someone smile or witness people being kind, it makes me happy and gives me the motivation to help!”, S3B’s Ysabella Khor proclaimed eagerly.

Following the month-long event, a consideration materialises as to how kindness is extremely pertinent in this age; wherein social media heavily influences this current generation.

The Internet can be inherently negative, with establishments of societal norms, bashers hiding behind their screens and more. Hence, why kindness is needed – as a tool to counteract such hatred. Through utilisation, kindness can promote happier communities where individuals feel heard and appreciated.

Lastly, Edward Cabangon from IBDP 2 gives his advice on being compassionate:

“My advice to my fellow kindness practitioners is to simply not expect anything – kindness is something unconditional. If you carry out an act expecting to get something in return, it’d be better to work on that mindset. By approaching it from a different angle and to continue practising kindness, you must first understand its root.”

Even small acts have profound effects on others, so let us challenge ourselves to make practising kindness a daily occurrence in order to sustain a positive environment all around!

Forging Towards A

BRIGHTER FUTURE Growth — an essential part of life that is not merely achieved in solidarity. No matter how big or small, one cannot grow to be successful without the help of those around. With that in mind, Singapore School Manila hosted a day-long event with teachers from Singaporean Primary Schools including Ai Tong, Boon Lay Gardens, Alexandra, and Westwood; alongside St Patrick’s, Kranji, Kent Ridge, Koh Chuan Presbyterian, Hai Sing Catholic School, Holy Innocents’ High School, Whitley, Guangyang, and Beatty Secondary Schools — hoping to further develop its education systems for the betterment of its students.

Arriving on the morning of September 13th 2023, teachers were given a warm welcome from SSM’s Student Council, Bayanihan.

They spent their first few hours getting to know the school’s vision and mission, alongside its approaches to teaching. Amidst all the school’s features, they were exceptionally impressed by one special inclusion, one that is highly-favored by students. “They were really surprised with the no homework policy,” Teacher Marla, who managed the visit, shared. The policy ultimately highlighted SSM’s value for their students’ well-being, wanting to give them the liberty to enjoy quality time with their families away from academics.

Teachers then explored the campus, led by SSM’s cheerful tour guides — the Primary 6 Class Officers! They ventured into the Primary classrooms, admiring the interactions between students whilst observing the systematic methods of the teachers. And though such visits may be uncommon, they hold an important role in the development of education.

“It’s really important to learn from others, through exposure and experience. Growth won’t happen alone therefore in order for us to grow as a school, we need to be open to the perspectives of others,” explains Teacher Marla.

One Leap

The tour soon came to an end with visiting teachers bidding farewell to the SSM staff, snipping quick photographs to encapsulate the joyous moment. Despite the short stay, numerous doors were opened nonetheless, paving the way for a brighter future for education!

CLOSER

Beyond academics, Singapore School Manila aims to provide its students with the right resources needed to strive towards their dreams, regardless of how big they may be.

On August 29, 2023, the Philippines’ first prima ballerina, Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, held a special Ballet exhibition for aspiring dancers. Students delved into the origin and history of ballet alongside a brief introduction to the dance’s fundamental movements.

Parents and students were able to learn a simple routine presented by guest performers, getting a small glimpse into the opportunities that lay ahead.

Not long after, on September 8th, students started their own journeys as in-training ballerinas, signing up for the newly opened Ballet Club. “My long-term goal is to become a professional ballerina in the future.” shares Primary 6A student, Lianne Gabhrielle. Many students shared similar excitements, driven by passion to excel in a foreign field.

“As long as you work hard, you can surpass your expectations,” Teacher Eva, the ballet instructor, states.

She further encouraged students to push themselves through tough times, promising to lead by example and guide them through it — hoping to see them shine under bright theater lights in the near future.

Galactic Spirits

Soar to New Heights

Much like different stars that twinkle in the galactic sky, Spirit Week at Singapore School Manila, held from September 11 to 15 2023, illuminated the campus with vibrant styles, fostering a celebration of harmony and diversity.

On Mismatched Monday, students dressed in combinations that transformed the hallways into an abstract gallery. From striped socks, chequered shirts, to mismatched shoes — students embraced the uniqueness of it all. Hannah Syquia from IBDP 1, wearing assorted garments, explains, "My own 'earth-shattering' style was shown by going further than what others are comfortable with. Why be subtle when you can stand out!"

With a week full of excitement — take a look at some of the most memorable costumes from the SSM community!

Mismatched Monday Evan Bonzo, P4-A Mox Reyes, P3-A

Timeless Tuesday took us back in time, highlighting the wonders of our parents' most treasured moments. Renee Lim from IBDP 1 personified two generations in one costume, attempting to strike a balance between her mother's elegance and her personal style.

Cowboys, cowgirls, and sheriffs donning their lassos and badges rode their horses to the dusty trails of Wild West Wednesday.

Some went all out as outlaws and bandits wandering the old town roads, while others chose to join the Wild West showdown in the classic shirt and jeans combination.

Students channelled their inner TV personas, ranging from cartoons to comedy characters on TV Thursday’s extravaganza.

Many collaborated, showing up in matching stylish outfits inspired by favourite iconic TV shows.

Finally, Futuristic Friday shared a glimpse of the unlimited possibilities of the future. As students strolled the hallways, proudly displaying metallic fabrics, holographic accessories, and alien-inspired costumes, the message was clear: the future belongs to those who imagine in unconventional ways.

"Dressing up serves not only as a means of selfexpression but also as a powerful symbol of being a role model, inspiring those in our school community to celebrate and embrace SSM’s rich diversity," emphasises Christian Kawsek, Bayanihan Student Council President and IBDP 2 student.

This year’s Spirit Week reminded us that we are all stars in a huge galaxy, each with a unique look but a shared brilliance.

In Tune With Victory By: Shayla Aguilar

The stage, in any corner of the world, is where you find how dedication and passion lead to the most profound expressions of the human spirit.

At merely sixteen years old, SSM’s IBDP 2 student, Juana Tiaoqui, experienced the peak of musical expression through her participation at the 2023 Golden Gate International Choral Festival, culminating in her debut performance in Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Growing up with a love and appreciation for music, Juana always dreamed of venturing out to share her talent with the world. She began her singing journey at the age of three, continuing to blossom as the years passed, joining the Young Voices of the Philippines (YVP) – a renowned children’s choir — at only eleven years old. Since then, she has ceaselessly dedicated herself to honing her musical gifts, not merely for the purpose of personal enrichment but also as an act of selfless service.

Last July 2023, the choir was put to the test during the International Choral Festival In San Francisco. A week full of concerts, competitions, and cultural exchanges left Juana with various anecdotes, becoming a testament to her great appreciation for the meticulous preparations that underpinned it all.

“It just goes to show how much work went into everything and that no matter what happens, we always have to be prepared to perform our best,” she explained, nothing short of moving, reminding us of the enduring power of dedication and resilience. Their efforts bore fruit with the team not only placing first, but achieving a clean sweep of awards across all categories.

Following the victory, Juana, alongside YVP, made their historic debut at Carnegie Hall, an aspirational destination for the world’s finest artists. They had the privilege of premiering an exquisite four-movement piece for treble voices, the Missa Virtutum (Mass of Virtues), as their debut performance.

“It was something really touching; I almost cried while singing because everything was about to pay off,” Juana recalled nostalgically, vividly reminded of her tireless efforts.

Training started earlier this year; “it was nothing short of rigorous,” as she described it, with three days a week, sometimes even more, being spent practising and perfecting musical numbers. “There were times, I had to look at biology notes and musical notes at the same time," she shared, recalling the struggle of balancing choir activities with academics.

Despite the challenges, it was the time and effort put in that propelled her towards excellence.

“If I didn’t give it my all, then what would all of the time I spent on it be for?“ Juana’s musical odyssey is not just her own but a source of inspiration for all who dare to follow their dreams, nurturing their talents and giving their all, knowing that the rewards are not just fulfilling but truly touching.

Staff’s Summer Snapshots

Ever wondered what the Singapore School Manila staff are up to over the break? Contrary to the ideal summer plans of many that involve relaxing by the beach, they roll up their sleeves, hard at work to support and revamp the school community for another year ahead!

From tidying the halls and empty classrooms after school hours — SSM’s staff play a vital role in the well-being of the community. One of the key contributors to a successful year that tends to be overlooked by many would be the environment, and knowing its significance, staff continue to put in great effort into maintaining a clean conducive campus for all. But more than tidiness and organisation, they remain another form of support for students, always ready to lend a helping hand when needed the most.

Ate Ria

Often seen hard at work tidying the crowded halls, Ate Ria, a member of the maintenance staff, is a familiar face to all! She spent her summer dedicatedly organising the school’s amenities and painting away at the walls alongside the other staff members. "I really enjoy my time at SSM," she shares fondly, highlighting the degree of care and attention put into their preparations.

Despite the brisk months filled with a variety of tasks, it was deemed a great experience nonetheless. Not only does her work keep the school looking clean and presentable — but it most importantly ensures a conducive and pleasant environment that positively affects students’ mental well-being, creating a more comfortable and focused atmosphere for learning.

Kuya Henry Similarly, Kuya Henry tackled a range of responsibilities, including the demanding job of replacing the broken vinyl flooring and patching up leaks around the school. “The biggest problem during the summer was that the power had stopped working, and we had to fix it,” he stated, sharing the huge issue that required urgent attention. However, amidst the complications, there were moments that made it all worthwhile.

Kuya Jimmy Kuya Jimmy particularly reminisces his cheerful interactions with students along the bright halls of the campus, describing the children of SSM to be very friendly, talkative, and memorable. For him, there is no place quite like the vibrant school campus — where the promise of a new academic year brings hope and opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of these young, eager learners. Regardless of the challenges he may have faced and will continue to face, he continues to work tirelessly each day with a smile on his face, knowing he is able to keep the student body safe and happy through the work he puts in.

Through each newly unveiled experience, we begin to see the vital role they play on campus, fostering meaningful connections with the community all whilst keeping everyone safe from harm. We sincerely thank the staff for their continuous hard work, we are truly grateful to have you!

A World From

RESTORING THE ASHES

“There’s nothing I can do about it.” — a common misconception amongst society. In small and large scale situations, the detriment of feeling insignificant overshadows the notion that even the smallest actions count.

One of the biggest issues have been the wildfires, which have surged in the last decade, driven by the rise and magnification of climate change.

And as we find ourselves only halfway through the year, the world is ablaze with countless regions grappling with the wrath of wildfires.

Picture this: Greece, the cradle of civilization, experienced 28 wildfires in a single scorching July. And Kazakhstan, a vast expanse of untamed beauty, witnessed one of its largest wildfires in recent memory, leaving numerous lives in ashes.

Countless of these stories make headlines, trend on social media, and capture our attention but where is the action?

We have seen at least 20 more of these severe and widely reported wildfires throughout the year, and numbers will continue to climb until we all commit to making a change.

The widespread news of Hawaii "burning" unravelled a clear connection between the wildfires’ ferocity and the drought and dryness experienced within Maui at the time. What was once a paradise of lush greenery, had been stripped bare, a stark reminder of climate change’s relentless grip. “We were made aware in advance by the National Weather Service that we were in a red flag situation — so that's dry conditions for a long time, so the fuel, the trees and everything, was dry," according to the commander general of the Hawaii National Guard, Maj. Gen. Kenneth Hara, during a briefing on the response to Wildfires.

Yet, even as the embers smouldered, there’s a resilient spirit ready to combat the aftermath.

With hard work and dedication, we can work towards minimising the damage and charting a path to recovery.

Although monetary donations can help rebuild what was lost, there are also other available ways for students like us to help. The influence of the vast internet can easily generate more support for global movements such as the fights against climate change. A more active way to help, even across the globe, is by focusing on improving the environment. Remember to conserve water and energy, cut down the emission of greenhouse gases, and contribute to plant life around your area.

With all that these communities are going through: people suffering after losing loved ones to the fire, being devastated by businesses getting lost in the wreckage; missing childhood homes hidden under complete sheets of ash– why are we not making any moves to stop this?

We should not just chase after justice for the sake of it. What truly matters is our ability as people to show compassion and a real dedication to doing all that we can to help others. Never let the feeling of being too weak, or too small block our way toward a future where we finally face adversity on the frontlines as one united whole.
