Charity Tonight, we are very proud to support the amazing work of Kidz Horizon Appeal. Established in 2004, Kidz Horizon Appeal is a charitable organization that attends specifically to the medical needs of the most vulnerable in society – the needy children with chronic illnesses.
The Kidz Horizon Appeal is made up of like-minded friends from various industries who have come together to volunteer their time and resources to help the less fortunate children who are ill, by raising funds and volunteering towards the KKH Health Fund.
Since it started, the Appeal has adopted the KKH Health Fund (KKHHF) and almost a million dollars is raised annually to help children with chronic illnesses, including cancer.
The Kidz Horizon Appeal was being conferred the President’s Social Service Award – Informal Group in October 2009 for relieving needy patients of their worries over medical expenses. We are thrilled that your purchases tonight will go in part to support this incredible organization and its important work.
Into its 19th successful year, the Appeal has been able to raise over $15 million to help more than 1,500 needy patients alleviate the financial burden for their families and allowed them to concentrate on helping their loved ones get better.

President’s Message I am delighted to warmly welcome each of you to this night of “Hollywood Glamour” at the 87th George Washington Ball. Over the years, the American community has gathered around the time of our first President’s birthday to celebrate the principles of our founders - equality, liberty, justice, rights and opportunity – and, of course, to share in the pursuit of happiness.

We hope you’ll join us. It has been three years since we hosted the 86th George Washington Ball, the longest gap between balls since the 1940s. Reviving this tradition and creating such a complex and appealing event would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of the resourceful and tireless GWB Organizing Committee, led by Chairperson Valerie Brandt in her eighth time organizing the committee’s impressive work. Our outstanding AAS staff too has done heroic work on the preparations, led by energetic Events Manger, Sabrina Lim, under the direction of our peerless General Manager, Melinda Murphy. A huge vote of gratitude to them all.
Tonight, we are here also to celebrate our diversity and inclusiveness, and to demonstrate our generosity toward those in need. I am confident there has never been a more glamorous or more generous gathering in the 106-year history of the American Association of Singapore. Our charity beneficiary this evening is Kidz Horizon Appeal, which in its 18 years has raised funds to help with the treatment and medical support of needy children suffering from cancer, HIV and other chronic and debilitating illnesses. We are proud to support this respected and effective Singapore charity.
