SMITH SQUARE HALL Smith Square Hall, in the heart of London’s Westminster, is an inspiring artistic space, an architectural icon, and a witness to an extraordinary history. Built in the early eighteenth century to an acclaimed design by Thomas Archer, the Hall – long known as St John’s Smith Square – was a gathering place for both the local community and powerbrokers in Parliament. It survived lighting strikes and a bombing
by the suffragettes, before being destroyed on the last night of the Blitz. An enlightened group of locals rebuilt the Hall to its original design in the 1960s, and it began a new chapter as a dedicated concert hall. Since its re-opening concert, given by Dame Joan Sutherland in 1969, it has been welcoming musicians and music lovers attracted by its acoustics and rich musical heritage.
ABOUT US
In 2021, the Hall merged with the orchestra then known as Southbank Sinfonia, now Sinfonia Smith Square. The Sinfonia regenerates each year, placing the world’s most promising early career musicians alongside the Hall’s rich programme of guest artists. Rooted in its community, Smith Square Hall’s Relay programme inspires people of all generations with the joy of music.
Over the coming years an ambitious restoration project, Doors Open, will breathe new life into Smith Square Hall, safeguarding the Baroque architecture for future generations, and revitalising it as a home for extraordinary artistic experiences and for our local community.
SINFONIA SMITH SQUARE Sinfonia Smith Square is a pioneering musical programme that defines the future of orchestral music. Every year since 2002, 34 leading earlycareer instrumentalists from around the world are handpicked to form an orchestra. In 2026-27, the cohort brings perspectives from 15 different nationalities as it unites at its London home, Smith Square Hall.
These musicians collaborate with leading artists from across the industry to create a vibrant year-long concert programme. Supported by best-in-field artist development training, the focus of the Sinfonia’s work is to create brilliant artistic experiences for audiences today, while fostering the talent, ideas and ambition of its musicians, empowering them to shape not only their own careers but also the wider orchestral music scene.
ABOUT US
Through the Relay programme, the Sinfonia gives back to its local community, bringing joy and inspiration through music to people of all generations. Ongoing collaborations with The Royal Ballet and Opera, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields – among others – provide invaluable mentorship and experience for the Sinfonia’s musicians. A rich roster of guest artists, conductors and directors
bring artistic inspiration, including Natalie Clein, Alena Baeva, François Leleux, Richard Egarr and Tom Morris. The 700 alumni from the Sinfonia’s 24-year history are testament to the programme’s impact. They can be found worldwide in leading orchestras and chamber ensembles, as inspiring music educators, and pioneering their own entrepreneurial musical ventures.

24 – 31 OCT 2026 SMITH SQUARE HALL
London Festival of Baroque Music is proudly sponsored by
B
I look forward to welcoming you to this year’s London Festival of Baroque Music at Smith Square Hall. Our 2026 season, titled ‘Refractions’, invites you to experience the brilliance of the Baroque era through a lens of transformation, coloured both by the passage of time and the unique perspectives of the performers themselves. From the intimate relationships of solo recitals featuring Purcell and Dowland to the grand, almost architectural splendour of Bach’s choral and orchestral masterpieces, I have no doubt our world-class artists will reveal hidden facets and some surprising revelations! I was so happy to see such full houses for last year’s Festival – it underlines my faith in it being the vital way in which we experience this period of musical ‘history’. I hope you will join us again to be part of seeing and hearing the Baroque anew. Iestyn Davies Artistic Adviser, London Festival of Baroque Music

DOORS OPEN TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH MUSIC 300 years of Smith Square Hall With a 300-year legacy, our home, Smith Square Hall, stands in the heart of Westminster as a centre of history and culture. Since 1969 it has enjoyed a new phase of life: restored from a post-WWII ruin to a much-loved concert hall for classical music and more. Sadly, the building is now on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register and is in urgent need of repair and renewal to make it fit-for-purpose for 21st century audiences. We need to restore the stonework and repair the fabric of the building, including the roof. Internally, we need to make the building more comfortable for our audiences and performers, improve audience sightlines and experience in the main hall, and improve accessibility throughout. ‘Doors Open’ Capital Project Our Doors Open renovation project will save and restore our beautiful Grade I listed building, and enable a bold new artistic vision within its walls, bringing inspiration and opportunity to the audiences and musicians of today, and the many generations yet to walk through our doors. We have secured a development grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and appointed a team of professional consultants to help us develop our project.
Working with renowned arts and culture architects, Burrell Foley Fischer, we secured planning and listed building consent to repair and improve the building in March 2026. Our capital campaign to raise the funding is also proceeding well and we anticipate starting works on site in late 2027. Through our Doors Open project, we will deliver a refreshed hall with new flexible staging and removable raked seating, and world-class facilities for our artists and audiences, including improved audience comfort, sound, and lighting. We will also provide a restored and redesigned crypt, including a new versatile learning studio, which will be able to accommodate a class of 30 school children, a new artists’ well-being hub, a welcoming cafe, and improved access, physically and culturally, to all. Our plans have sustainability and environmental impacts woven throughout, installing renewable energy technologies in the building and other improvements, aiming to reduce our carbon emissions by 50% through the project. If you’d like to learn more or talk to us about the project, please contact our Chief Executive, Rosie Fraser: rosie@sinfoniasmithsquare.org.uk
