Welcome to the sixteenth season of Sinfonia Gulf Coast! Coming to you from a very successful, yet reimagined 2020-2021 season, Sinfonia continues to lead the way and provides the highest-caliber artistic and educational musical programming for YoU, our great patrons and community!

music & artistic director | sinfonia gulf coast chief executive officer | mattie kelly arts foundation The 2021-2022 season marks Demetrius Fuller’s sixteenth as Founding Music & Artistic Director of Florida’s Sinfonia Gulf Coast. Maestro Fuller has helped redefine the cultural and arts education landscape of Northwest Florida by offering inspiring and artistically high-caliber performances, exciting critics and patrons alike, as well as championing arts education and music in the schools by providing outreach opportunities to thousands of students. In November 2020, as the organization was completing its 25th anniversary, Fuller was appointed Chief Executive officer of the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation.

Known as a visionary and forward thinker, Fuller will work closely with the board of directors of MKAF and Sinfonia Gulf Coast to create a partnership that will transform the MKAF land in to the full cultural and performing and arts education facility envisioned by the late Destin matriarch Mattie Kelly.

A versatile conductor, Mr. Fuller has been chosen to work with some of the world’s most prestigious conductors and orchestras. Mr. Fuller is an award recipient from the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts, the Werner Foundation, and the International Music Foundation. Fuller trained at the prestigious University of Cincinnati CollegeConservatory of Music, receiving both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees.

As an accomplished clarinetist, Mr. Fuller has performed in the Dame Myra Hess Chamber Music Series, sponsored by the International Music Foundation and broadcast live on Chicago’s WFMT 98.7 FM. Festival appearances include the opera Theater of Lucca (Italy), David oistrakh (Estonia), Aspen, Cabrillo and Eastern Music Festival (USA). He has been invited to work with conductors Gustav Meier, Michael Tilson-Thomas, Charles Dutoit, Daniel Lewis, Marin Alsop, Neeme Järvi, Jorma Panula, and the late Robert Shaw. Fuller has been fortunate to present and collaborate with multiple icons in the music industry including Roberta Flack, Bernadette Peters, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Patti LuPone, Kristin Chenoweth, Vanessa Williams, Sharon Isbin, Chris Brubeck and Pink Martini, among others.

An advocate of contemporary music, Fuller has premiered, commissioned and/or collaborated with composers such as Augusta Read-Thomas, Dorothy Hindman, Thomas Schneller, Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, Joel Hoffman, Steven Winteregg, Tan Dun, giving the Southeastern U.S. premier of his Crouching Tiger Concerto and Chris Brubeck, presenting the Southeastern U.S. premier of both his violin concerto Spontaneous Combustion and symphonic tribute Ansel Adams: America, which was co-composed with his father, the late Dave Brubeck.

During the 2013-2014 season, Fuller lead the Southeast U.S. premier of Identity - Zhongshan Zhuang, co-composed by Victor Cheng and Michael Gordon Shapiro. In 2014, Fuller and Sinfonia co-commissioned and performed the U.S. premiere of Chris Brubeck and Guillaume Saint-James Brothers in Arts and the world premiere of Nico Muhly’s full orchestration of his electric violin concerto Seeing is Believing.

Abroad, Fuller was invited several times by Maestro Kurt Masur to conduct the l'orchestre Nationale de France (Paris) in a set of conductor readings. Fuller spent two seasons in 2005-06 as principal guest conductor and conducting pedagogue in Brazil at the Festival of the Mountains in Poços de Caldas, followed by his July 2007 invitation as one of two conductors selected world-wide to conduct the Iraqi National Symphony and three other Iraqi orchestras in a groundbreaking Unity Academy in Erbil, Northern Iraq sponsored by American Voices and the U.S. Department of State.

In Northwest Florida, Fuller serves as a Trustee of the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation. He is a past board member of Alaqua Animal Refuge, Cultural Arts Alliance, Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center, okaloosa Arts Alliance and is a past chair of the American Cancer Society’s Cattle Barons’ Ball and continues to serve as a grant panelist for the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. In 2009, New York City-based Musicians For Harmony appointed Maestro Fuller as one of three Artistic Advisors, an honor shared with musical luminaries Arnold Steinhardt of the renowned Guarneri String Quartet and violinist Cho-Liang Lin. sinfonia gulf coast | 25

It’s an industry that provides jobs, highlights the diversity of our communities and residents, creates connections to our history and heritage and reminds us that Florida is a special place to live and work.

The arts and cultural industry means business. The arts and cultural industry have an annual impact of $3 billion in the state of Florida, and arts and cultural experiences contribute to a better life for Floridians and visitors to the Sunshine State. With a $5 to $1 return on investment for state dollars, arts and culture are an excellent investment. Visitors to our state and residents alike make important contributions to our economy by supporting and consuming art and culture. And beyond the dollars and cents, the cultural industry makes for happier, healthier Floridians and visitors.

A CONVERSATION WITH THE CONDUCTOR Demetrius Fuller Weighs in on ‘Thrilling’ Season 16

By Zandra Wolfgram Sinfonia Gulf Coast’s 2021-2022 season lineup is big. As in big Broadway stars and singers, film cult classics, legendary bands, classical connections, blockbuster movies and more. Putting together a season that will thrill is an artform and Sinfonia Music & Artistic Director Demetrius Fuller has answered the call for the 16th time. We talked with the maestro to get the inside scoop on the upcoming season and here is what he had to say: ZW: You are kicking things off with a delicious nod to Broadway. Tell us why.

DF: September 14 we are featuring A Tribute to Broadway Featuring Shoshana Bean. We chose this date because it marks the official reopening of Broadway. We wanted to create a cabaretstyle evening and showcase a true artist who has a tie to Broadway. We have that in Shoshana Bean. From the Broadway perspective, her debut was as Shelly in the original revival cast of Hairspray, she was Idina Menzel’s replacement for Elphaba in Wicked, and most recently she was Jenna, the lead in Waitress. She's an amazing singer with No. 1 hits on Billboard, and she's been on TV and film across the gamut performing with the likes of Ariana Grande, David Foster and even Michael Jackson. Everyone says experiencing our intimate events at Seagar’s is kind of like bringing New York to our little area, so we wanted to keep that feel for sure.

ZW: Psycho in Concert (Oct. 23) is terrifying in a fabulous way. Tell us a bit about this classic thriller.

DF: We always try to make things relevant by tying in all aspects of culture, whether it's classical culture or pop culture. Everybody knows the Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho. This was a fun opportunity to stage a classic film and concert in the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village the week before Halloween. The famous shrill, spine-tingling sound in the film score is accomplished solely by strings, so we will be featuring Sinfonia’s string players performing live which will surely amplify the terrorizing moments that captivated movie buffs from the start.

ZW: November 13 you are featuring the Classical Mystery Tour a tribute to The Beatles.

Now, that’s a great way for everyone to “come together.” sinfonia gulf coast | 29

DF: Yes, in returning to the stage we wanted to keep the programming fun and light. Everybody loves The Beatles and it's literally the longest running tribute that has performed with a symphony.

They've sold millions of tickets worldwide and we’re happy to have them and have our orchestra perform with them.

ZW: December 10 we have Holiday Pops with Nicholas Rodriguez who is already a friend of Sinfonia stage.

DF: The holiday concert is such a family-friendly concert. We always try to have fun, familyfriendly artists perform. Nick has performed as a special guest artist at Crescendo! and he also did a Broadway concert with Morgan James, but he's never had his own concert with the orchestra. So, now that we know him, we know how amazing he is, it just seemed right to be able to feature him in his own performance. He’ll do holiday favorites, but also selections from the Great American Songbook and some pop songs — it will be a nice array of music.

ZW: January 8 we warm up winter with Time For Three. They are described as a classically trained garage band. That’s got our attention, tell us more.

DF: Yes, we are excited to bring back a few familiar faces. Time for Three (Charles Yang, Nicolas “Nick” Kendall and Ranaan Meyer) has performed at one of our Fourth of July Pops concerts and Nick Kendall has performed for our audience in the past. Grammy-nominated composer and jazz legend Chris Brubeck will return to the Sinfonia stage to perform the Southeast U.S. premier of his concerto entitled Travels in Time for Three, which he wrote for them. Mind you, all of them are from the top conservatories in the country, so beyond the concerto, it's going to be a big jam session, basically.

ZW: Exciting! And then we have a Classi-Palooza Classical Connections concert March 12 with two intriguing pieces.

DF: We get our taste of classical taste here in a riveting way. Igor Stravinsky wrote The Soldier’s Tale, which is basically a classic mini narrated theater piece set to music. It is very exciting, pointed, and theatrical music. And then, we have Mozart’s Symphony No. 29 in A Major on the opposite end of the spectrum, which is whimsical, joyful, and playful. Aaron King Vaughn is conducting, which is wonderful.

ZW: April 30 we go big and bold as always by capping this season with Raiders of the Lost Ark in Concert.

DF: So, this is John Williams’ epic score paired with the full showing of the famous adventure film. It comes alive even more because the soundtrack is removed and replaced with Sinfonia’s live orchestra. A bit of the back story is that the licensing for the Indiana Jones series, especially the Raiders of the Lost Ark is expiring at the end of April, so we just may be the last orchestra to perform this arrangement of the production. This is timely, because Disney has a new Indiana Jones movie featuring Harrison Ford coming out in May. So, audiences can gear up for that by watching our live concert.

ZW: Congratulations, maestro, on a truly thrilling lineup. So much to look forward to and, of course, tickets are on sale now at SinfoniaGulfCoast.org.

When you hear the hum of 3,700 grade school children clutching recorders and barely able to contain their excitement as a live Link Up concert is about to commence, it’s clear, after 15 years, educational outreach remains at the forefront of Sinfonia Gulf Coast’s mission.

Entertain. Educate. Inspire. These three simple words are a mandate for Northwest Florida’s only fully professional orchestra and its music and artistic director, maestro Demetrius Fuller.

And that includes young music makers.

She has sold out solo concerts around the globe, lent her voice to countless films and television shows, amassed millions of views on YouTube, and performed alongside Ariana Grande, David Foster, Postmodern Jukebox, Brian McKnight, and Michael Jackson.

Shoshana is a veteran of the Broadway stage having made her debut in the original cast of Hairspray, starring as the very first replacement for Elphaba in Wicked and most recently as Jenna in Waitress. PROgRAM NOTES Bernard Herrmann (1911 -1975) Psycho Projected Born in New York City in 1911, Bernard Herrmann began his career as a composer and conductor in the late 1920s. Early associations with Charles Ives, Percy Grainger, Philip James and Aaron Copland’s Young Composers Group were the drivers of his musical development. In 1934 he began a long association with CBS Radio. The experimental bent of CBS programming greatly encouraged his development as a musician. He excelled at incidental music for both poetry readings (La belle dame sans merci, A Shropshire Lad) and for radio dramas by Orson Welles (Mercury Theatre of the Air), Norman Corwin (Columbia Presents Corwin) and Irving Reis (Columbia Workshop).

Herrmann honed his conducting skills in many novel programs of his own devising for the CBS Symphony Orchestra, and served as its principal conductor from 1943-1950. Ready access to this orchestra – and the many world-class soloists who performed with it – elicited a steady stream of concert music from him, including his Nocturne and Scherzo (1936), a Symphony (1939-41), and a song cycle on Nicholas Breton’s The Fantasticks (194143). He also wrote a dramatic cantata on Melville’s Moby Dick (1937-38), and an opera on Bronte’s Wuthering Heights (1943-51).

Herrmann’s collaboration with Orson Welles on the notorious War of the Worlds broadcast of Halloween 1938 provoked the spectacular opening of film careers for both men, beginning with Citizen Kane in 1941, and followed by The Magnificent Ambersons in 1942. A long association with 20th Century-Fox (Jane Eyre, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, The Day the Earth Stood Still) ensued before his decadelong association with Alfred Hitchcock began in 1954 with The Trouble with Harry, followed by The Man Who Knew Too Much and Vertigo. By the late 1960s the influence of his work with Hitchcock and Welles led, in turn, to important work with François Truffaut (Fahrenheit 451, The Bride Wore Black); Brian DePalma (Sisters, Obsession) and Martin Scorcese (Taxi Driver).

Years of chronic, heavy smoking conspired to ruin his health just as a new generation of film makers turned to him: he died at the Sheraton Universal Hotel on Christmas Eve 1975, just hours after the last

recording session of Scorcese’s film.

The music for Psycho is unique in Hollywood film music. Scored only for strings, it mixes the austere simplicity of his later style (ostinatos, sequential sequences of closely-voiced chords, mosaic forms) with freely atonal counterpoint borrowed from his Sinfonietta for Strings (1935-36). He felt the sound of strings alone mirrored the film’s black-andwhite cinematography. Written in the first two months of 1960, his score is comprised of 50 minutes of music – nearly all of which was used – amounting to less than half the film’s total running time.

It is not uncommon for Herrmann’s films to involve less music than would be the case for other composers of his time; he was very conscious of the dramatic impact music had – while just as conscious of how music could detract from the drama of a scene. This is an important part of his success in working with Hitchcock, though – ironically – the composer and the director disagreed over just this issue while working at several sequences in Psycho.

Hitchcock’s original conception of the famed shower scene was that it should be unscored; Herrmann disagreed, but didn’t tell Hitchcock what he had in mind. Hitchcock was on vacation while the music was recorded in mid-March, so Herrmann was able to surprise Hitchcock while dubbing the final mix of the soundtrack. When Herrmann played the sequence with his famous murder music, Hitchcock immediately agreed that it was exactly right.

There was another instance, however, where Herrmann’s original idea was not followed. He intended for the scene, where Norman (Anthony Perkins) sinks Marion’s (Janet Leigh) car in the swamp, to be scored with a short movement from his Sinfonietta for Strings – a hushed atonal counterpoint called “Interlude” – while the preceding scene, where Norman puts his final touches on the cleaning of the cabin where she was killed, had music very similar to that heard in the scene just before it, where Norman mops the bathroom of Marion’s blood. Instead, the music for the swamp scene was not used as intended: it is heard while Norman puts the final touches on the cabin, replacing the music originally written for that scene. The scene at the swamp then played without music... with a different – though compelling – effectiveness. Another important disagreement emerged over the music heard when Norman corners Lila (Vera Miles) in the Psycho Program Notes cont. on Pg. 55 sinfonia gulf coast | 53

Psycho Program Notes cont. cellar of the house. Herrmann originally planned to use the last of the variations from his Sinfonietta – a cathartic, harrowing tumult of dissonance. Hitchcock immediately rejected it, insisting that the murder music was perfect for this moment, just as it had been for the other stabbings in the film. A compromise was reached: the murder music begins with Norman’s appearance, but soon gives way to the music originally written for the scene as Mother’s face is seen in what seems to be maniacal laughter...

The present presentation of the score is intended to be played while the film is projected, but with one novel twist: the aforementioned concepts Herrmann had, but which went unused, have been restored! It will now be possible to judge Herrmann’s original concepts for these important scenes in what has become the most famous work of his career – and, perhaps, the most famous work of film music by any composer. ~ Christopher Husted

Founded in Tallahassee, Florida, Carriola Quartet is a dynamic and evolving ensemble. This quartet features violinists Madeline Miller and Katie Taylor, violist Megumi Terry, and cellist Erica Kremer.

With a passion for community engagement, Carriola Quartet has performed original, interactive concerts in public and private schools, college classes, and community spaces around the North Florida region. The ensemble also performs often at Florida State University, where all four members are students; three are graduate assistants pursuing graduate degrees in music performance, while one is an accomplished senior performance major.

Carriola Quartet is currently the String Quartet-in-Residence for Sinfonia Gulf Coast, and all members perform regularly with other regional orchestras. They also own private studios and teach at Timberlane Arts and Dance Academy, Christ Classical Academy, Javacya Conservatory for the Arts, and Thomasville Road Arts Academy. sinfonia gulf coast | 55

Jim Owen (John Lennon) Rhythm Guitar/Piano/Vocals

Jim Owen was born and raised in Huntington Beach, California. He gained rich musical experience from his father, who played music from the classics for him on the piano, and from his extensive library of recordings by the great classical artists. Jim began studying the piano at age six, and won honors in various piano performance competitions throughout his teenage years. He was eight years old when he first heard The Beatles, and promptly decided to take up the study of the guitar. His first professional performance as a Beatle tribute artist was at 16. Then, at age 18, he began touring internationally with various Beatles tribute

It has long been Jim’s dream to share with the public live performances of some of the greatest music ever written and recorded, so in 1996, Owen began working on his idea for a new Beatles tribute show with orchestra. Classical Mystery Tour was the result.

Tony Kishman (Paul McCartney) (Bass Guitar, Piano, Vocals) Singer-songwriter Tony Kishman was born in Tucson, Arizona where he began his musical career in the early 1970s. Although he had been

playing guitar for a number of years, it was not until age 19 that Tony started performing seriously.

Kishman's early influences included Wishbone Ash, Bad Company and Peter Frampton.

Between 1973 and 1978, he played guitar in the group Cheap Trix, a cover band performing Top 40 as well as originals. Starting in 1979, Kishman played bass and guitar for six years as Paul McCartney in both the national and international tours of Beatlemania. He then went on to perform in Legends in Concert and produced shows that ran in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. He joined the classic supergroup Wishbone Ash for a tour of Europe and the recording of the group's 18th album.

Joe Bithorn (George Harrison) Lead Guitar/Vocals Joe Bithorn grew up in Manhattan and Long Island where he was exposed to a variety of music including jazz, Latin, classical and more. By age 3, his musical father taught the children how to sing harmony. He was profoundly influenced by the experiences he had at Carnegie Hall through his Mom who worked with the Festival Casals.

Thanks to The Beatles appearance on Ed Sullivan, Joe took a strong interest in the guitar.

Early influences include the band Cream, and Joe developed the ability to learn guitar parts by ear by age 14. By age 16, Joe was so proficient that he was recruited for studio sessions.

While in high school, Joe and his brother formed The Bithorn Brothers Band, performing the early music of the Allman Brothers Band. Joe heard about an audition for Beatlemania, and was hired for the touring production as George. After

touring with the show in North America, Joe joined RAIN in 1983 and has been touring the world ever since.

Chris Camilleri (Ringo Starr) Drums/Vocals Born and raised on Long Island, New York, Chris Camilleri had a convenient drum teacher; his dad. He started listening to Beatles records at a young age, and for many years played drums and sang along to the recordings. Gradually Chris gravitated to progressive rock bands, but retained a fondness for The Beatles and eventually formed the internationally-renowned Beatles cover band Liverpool, which still reunites to perform at the Fests For Beatles Fans (formerly Beatlefest). Chris has played drums for a variety of touring artists, including Peter Noone (of Herman’s Hermits fame), Badfinger, Micky Dolenz, Joe Walsh, and other Beatles-era bands. He became a good friend and musical associate to Harry Nilsson (who was a contemporary and close friend to all the individual Beatles). In addition to The Beatles, his musical influences include Jethro Tull, Genesis, ELP, and David Bowie. When not playing music, Chris has an active commercial and voice-over career. Chris is a D’Addario musical products artist.

Grammy-nominated composer Chris Brubeck continues to distinguish himself as an innovative performer and composer. An award-winning composer, he is clearly tuned into the pulse of contemporary music and no stranger to the Sinfonia stage. Earning praise from NPR, NBC, The Wall Street Journal, and the Chicago Sun-Times to name a few, the band has become renowned for their charismatic and

Having graced the stages of Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and The Royal Albert hall, their inimitable and mutable style fits equally well in an intimate club setting, like Joe’s Pub in New York, or Yoshi’s in San Francisco. In 2016, Time For Three was featured on the famed “Night of the Proms” tour, sharing the stage with such artists as Chaka Khan and Ronan Keating, playing arenas throughout several European countries. The trio has collaborated with artists as diverse as Ben Folds, Branford Marsalis, Joshua Bell, Aoife O’Donovan, Natasha Bedingfield, and Arlo Guthrie, and have premiered original works—written for the band from composers Chris Brubeck and Pulitzer Prize-winners Jennifer Higdon and William Bolcom. An upcoming commission project includes a work by Pulitzer Prize winning composer, Kevin Puts. They’ve appeared on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars, and won an Emmy for “Time For Three In Concert,” produced by PBS. Yet for all their accolades and diverse experiences, the irrepressible band constantly hungers for new ones. In 2020, the band partnered with cellist and composer Ben Sollee to put together the soundtrack to the new Focus Features' film Land, starring and directed by Robin Wright.

The film first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 31, 2021.

With a collection of new songs, the band has teamed up with GRAMMY-winning songwriter Liz Rose and GRAMMY-winning producer Femke Weidema for new recordings released through Warner Music.

rammy-nominated composer Chris Brubeck continues to distinguish himself as a multi-faceted performer and creative force. An award-winning writer, he is clearly tuned into the pulse of contemporary music. The respected music critic for The Chicago Tribune, John von Rhein calls Chris: “a composer with a real flair for lyrical melody—a 21st Century Lenny Bernstein.”

Chris has created an impressive body of symphonic work while maintaining a demanding touring and recording schedule with his two groups: the Brubeck Brothers Quartet (with brother Dan on drums), and Triple Play, an acoustic trio featuring Chris on piano, bass and trombone along with guitarist Joel Brown and harmonica player extraordinaire Peter Madcat Ruth. Additionally, Chris performs as a soloist playing his trombone concertos with orchestras and has served as Artist in Residence with orchestras and colleges in America, coaching, lecturing, and performing with students and faculty.

Chris is a much sought-after composer, and has been commissioned to write many innovative works. Pas de Deux, Concerto for Violin, Cello & Orchestra, written for Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson was co-commissioned by the Classical Tahoe Orchestra, which presented the world premiere of the piece under the baton of Maestro Joel Revzen. Chris's recent compositions include concertos for

Chris's highly acclaimed Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra, has been played by many of the top bass trombonists in the world (including former Boston Symphony bass trombonist and now Arizona resident Douglas Yeo) and was recorded with Chris as soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra. Joel Revzen conducted Chris and the LSO at Abbey Road Studios resulting in the release of the popular cd, Bach to Brubeck on Koch International Classics. In addition to the dozens of jazz recordings Chris has made, he is also very proud of the two CDs he recorded with Frederica von Stade, Across Your Dreams and Convergence (which features River of Song).

Chris and his father, Dave Brubeck, co-wrote Ansel Adams: America, an exciting orchestral piece which features 101 of Ansel Adams’ majestic images projected above the orchestra. In 2013, Ansel Adams: America was a Grammy finalist for Best Instrumental Composition.

Chris is an advocate for arts education and serves on the advisory board of Norwalk Youth Symphony and Classical Tahoe, and is on the honorary board for the Tennessee Arts Academy. He is also a founding director of Brubeck Living Legacy, a non profit founded by the Brubeck family to honor and continue the legacy of his parents, Dave and Iola Brubeck.

PROgRAM NOTES Chris Brubeck (1952 -) Fanfare for a Friend: In Honor of Maestro Peter Jaffe Peter Jaffe is a marvelous musician and despite his abundant knowledge of Classical music, he has an expansive appreciation and knowledge of many musical genres. His enthusiasm for music is infectious and we have enjoyed many joyful collaborations over the years with The Stockton Symphony Orchestra. I initially met Maestro Jaffe through my father, Dave Brubeck, who told me that Peter was an extremely talented and cheerful conductor whose company I would really enjoy. As with many things, my father was right in his assessment!

I was very deeply honored that the Stockton Symphony Board thought of me as a composer when the idea of saluting Maestro Jaffe with a new piece came up.

Little themes for this musical tribute immediately began to dance in my head. Since Peter was a great friend of both me and my father, my first musical thought was to employ a compositional technique that my father had grown fond of in his later years. He liked to look for the inherent rhythm in someone's name and use that as the "rhythmic cell" for the piece. For example An-ge-la Lans-bur-y implies two triplets and a 6/8 time signature. Whereas Peter Jaf-fe implies a four note figure. Therefore this piece starts off with a series of orchestral pyramid chords proclaiming "Pe-ter Jaf-fe, Pe-ter Jaf-fe." Since the Board asked me to compose a work that would celebrate his 20 years as the Stockton Symphony music director and conductor, I thought I'd start with the feeling of a Fanfare and an orchestral salute. Peter's tastes are vast and eclectic so as an inside joke I threw in a fleeting Bach-like passage before quickly returning to the musical language of the opening.

In several key places throughout this composition I also insert a stabbing chord (one of Peter's favorites which is a collection of notes that are harmonically both major and minor chords sounding simultaneously.) This kind of chord was used in a revolutionary way by Stravinsky in the Classical world and

by Dave Brubeck as a modern Jazz innovation.

Also, there is a fugue-like section that is again based on the "Peter Jaffe" rhythmic cell. With another "inside" nod, it starts on my instrument, the bass trombone, and the theme is tossed around the orchestra in fugue-like imitation. After a couple of minutes of continuing this playful repartee the tuba, contra bassoon, cellos and basses play the Jaffe theme at half speed as the upper voices go rolling along at their original clip. I know this is the kind of internal musical architecture that Peter really enjoys.

The middle of the piece has a romantic theme which I wrote as a salute to Peter's lovely wife, Jane. As they say "behind every great man, there is a great woman," and Jane

and Peter enjoy a terrific partnership. Between them they are a four-legged, two-brained walking encyclopedia of musical knowledge and over the years I have called them many times seeking answers. They actually admire creative and skillfully played rock music as well; so I introduced a Blues Shuffle/ Boogie Woogie ostinato (Pe-ter Jaf-fe, Peter Jaf-fe in a repeating 6/8 feel) near the end of the piece which "Rock and Rolls" along while the brass interjects the Stravinsky chord above it. Echoing Classical structures, there is a recapitulation of the introduction, only this time compressed to build more energy towards the ending.

Peter Jaffe is such an energetic conductor that there was no doubt in my mind that this piece written in his honor had to include a compelling finale.

I hope you enjoy listening to this piece as much as I enjoyed writing it. I have played with many great orchestras and conductors all over the world. I want you to know that in my opinion the citizens of Stockton are extremely fortunate and blessed to have a man of Peter Jaffe's abilities and character leading one of the most important organizations in their community for the last 20 years. This is my sincere musical tribute to a marvelous musician, great friend and innovative thinker with a very big heart. I think the ideas expressed in this piece beat the heck out of me giving a long speech praising his many achievements. Bravo Maestro Jaffe! May your days continue to be filled with joyful music!

Chris Brubeck (1952 -) Travels in Time for Three A few years ago, I took the train to Philadelphia from Connecticut and stayed at Ranaan Meyer's house (Tf3's bass player) where, along with the other guys, we played and bounced ideas off of each other over the next 3 days.

The first jam session started off with the group reading a sketch I had written on the train ride on the way to Philadelphia. That theme turned out to have the staying power to be the main theme that, in the final composition, ties the four movements together.

As we tossed ideas back and forth while improvising on the jazzy "train" theme, we fell into playing the theme in a "classical" manner. This central idea is clearly expressed in the final version of the first movement. It sounds as if the group was instantaneously transported into the Baroque era with the orchestra following along in this contrasting style. This reflected the fact that both the group and I have tremendously eclectic tastes. We love all kinds of music from Funk to Classical -- we embrace it all. 1700's to the 21st Century it almost seems like the trio were musical "time travelers." These factors inspired the title...

"Travels in Time For Three."

On my second day in Philadelphia, we started jamming in some odd time signatures. Soon a country fiddle was playing in 4/4 over the odd-metered bass line. This crazy confluence of genres was the foundation of the second movement.

Since we had taped our jamming, I referred back to it for inspiration as I began to develop and compose "sketches."

The fiddle melodies dance over a 4-bar rhythmic pattern group consisting of one bar of 4/4, one bar of 3/4, one bar of 4/4, one bar of 5/4. There is a quick change in style and suddenly the rhythmic foundation becomes a Funk pattern in 9/4 time. To mix things up, Ranaan plays a country fiddle-style solo on double bass which is actually in "good old" 4/4 time for a while. Whatever time signature is being played, the music is always swinging whether in an Irish "folky" way, or in an innovative odd-metered funky stew.

The third Movement, by total contrast, is marked "Adagio Pensivo" and is dominated by the string section of the orchestra. This movement, led by Nick & Nikki, emphasizes harmonic exploration, with many "webs" of melodic suspensions extending through the opening passage. This sets the table for a double bass solo in the highest expressive range of the instrument. At the emotional climax of the movement, the main theme is restated and reharmonized in an expansive way. The musical arc of this Movement is completed with a return to the opening motif and a quiet resolution.

In the last movement, "Clouseau's Mardi Gras", I made the note "Misterioso Burlesco" in the score as this movement takes the audience on a humorous ride from a sneaky Mancini-influenced opening, to a Cajun fiddle/Mardi Gras Funk parade, to a Gospel Funk Country groove in 7/4, complete with blazing fiddles matching the intensity of rock and roll.

After individual cadenzas, the entire piece climaxes into a fast 7/8 version of the original theme. This serves as a vehicle to propel the celebratory music to an exciting conclusion.

This concerto was tailor-made for Time for Three, and I'm happy I was able to create a vehicle for them that showcases their remarkable talents and spirit and thrills audiences all over the world. I think you'll enjoy taking this musical journey with them.

PROgRAM NOTES William Grant Still (1895 - 1978) Danzas De Panama 1. Tamborito 2. Mejorana 3. Punto 4. Cumbia y Congo Danzas De Panama dates from 1948 and are based on a collection of Panamanian folk tunes which were collected

by Elizabeth Waldo in the 1920's. Although there are only four dances presented, each movement has at least two and sometimes three separate dances within it. The opening movement Tamborito immediately captures the listener's attention with the instrumentalists percussively striking the sides of their instruments, creating the rhythm for this highly chromatic introduction which immediately leads to a sadder and slower dance that is also quite chromatic. For the rest of the movement, Still ingeniously juxtaposes these two dances, one after the other seamlessly. When the faster dance returns, it is in two sections, the first fast and up-beat the second more melancholy and sounding like a close relative of the tango.

The movement ends surprisingly on a soft glissando. Next comes Mejorana which sounds like a carefree Panamanian waltz. The forceful middle section is a somewhat ominous dance in two. The slowish third movement, Punto, has a gentle and very familiar Mexican sound to it. It is the kind of thing one hears in the movies when Mexican cowboys return to their hacienda at the end of a day's work. The middle section in 6/8 is in the minor and more robust. The last movement, Cumbia y Congo begins again with a percussive hand-pounding to a high-spirited and fast dance. At first it sounds purely African but very quickly a heavy dose of Latin melody is added to the mix. The coda is brilliant and exciting.

William Grant Still was one of the most important African American composers of the 20th century. Although classical music was his first love, he also wrote for radio and television. Still's orchestral works have been widely performed, at least in the United States, but his chamber music is not well known. He was sent to college by his mother to study medicine but in the end studied composition with Edgar Varese at Oberlin and later with George Chadwick at the New England Conservatory.

L’histoire du Soldat was first performed in 1918. It was indeed a great success and was supposed to go on an extravagant tour around the world, but it was cancelled due to a flu epidemic (sound familiar?). The Soldier's Tale is a Faustian tale of a soldier who makes a sneaky deal with the Devil! I believe Jane Vial Jaffe tells the short story best…

“Organized as a series of tableaux, the action takes place during the dance and mime scenes, which the narration connects. Part One begins with a jaunty introductory march as the Soldier heads home on leave The Soldier’s March. In Scene One, the Soldier stops to rest by a brook and plays a fiddle tune Little Tunes Beside the Brook, based on a Russian street song fashioned into one of Stravinsky’s signature ostinatos (repeating patterns).

The Devil, disguised as an old man with a butterfly net, sneaks up on the Soldier and convinces him to trade his fiddle for a magic book that foretells the future. When the Devil finds he can’t play the fiddle, he tempts the Soldier with images of luxury to come home and teach him. After three days, the Devil magically whisks the Soldier back to his home village.

A reprise of the Soldier’s March introduces Scene Two, in which the Soldier comes to the eerie realization that he has been gone three years, not three days—even his mother thinks he’s a ghost, and his fiancée is now married with two children. He berates himself and wonders what to do Pastorale. The Devil, now dressed as a cattle merchant, reappears to remind the Soldier that he can make a fortune by using the magic book Closing Music.

Scene Three begins as the Soldier, having accumulated great wealth but finding it meaningless, throws the book aside. Disguised as an old woman, the Devil sells him back his fiddle, but the Soldier can’t make it sound and hurls it into the wings. To a reprise of Little Tunes Beside the Brook, he tears the book into pieces.

A modified reprise of the Soldier’s March opens Part Two as the Soldier trudges along aimlessly. He finds himself in another country, where a king has promised his daughter’s hand in marriage to anyone who can cure her illness. Arriving at the palace—accompanied by the Royal March, replete with Spanish flavor—the Soldier meets the Devil, dressed as a virtuoso violinist. While waiting to see the Princess, the Soldier purposely loses his money to the Devil in a card game (Scene Five), all the while plying him with drink until he falls unconscious. The Soldier recovers his fiddle and plays the triumphant Little Concert over the Devil’s insensible form.

In the Princess’s chamber, the Soldier plays three dances—Tango, Waltz, and Ragtime—to which she dances as she is restored to health (Scene Six). The Devil enters undisguised, and the Soldier makes him dance to exhaustion The Devil’s Dance. The Soldier and the sinfonia gulf coast | 87

Princess drag him off, then embrace to the music of the Little Chorale, based on that most famous of Lutheran chorales, “A Mighty Fortress.” The Devil interrupts with a dire warning in The Devil’s Song that the Soldier must not cross the border to his native village or he will be reclaimed—much like Orpheus. The Great Chorale, accompanying the Narrator’s moralizing, completes Stravinsky’s “Mighty Fortress” parody, which imparts a sense of mock grandness with its delightful sprinkling of dissonance.

Eventually the Soldier and the Princess decide to visit his native village. As they cross the border, the Devil, again in possession of the fiddle, repossesses the Soldier, who follows him unresisting as the Triumphal March of the Devil resounds.”

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) Symphony No. 29 in A major K. 201 1. Allegro moderato 2. Andante 3. Minuetto: Allegretto - Trio 4. Allegro con spirito Symphony No. 29 is a fine specimen of gallant writing: well bred, charming, polite and faithful to the Viennese classical model. Its light-hearted charm and elegance intends a work which is truly meant to entertain and delight. For this purpose, Mozart chose to score the work modestly. Aside from the basic string component, only a pair of oboes and pair of horns are required. The economy of means in no way limits or impedes its symphonic character.

The first movement, allegro moderato, begins softly introducing the first main theme immediately. The tune is catchy, marked by an octave drop and pulsing repeated notes. That opening idea rises sequentially by step, as if making certain that we do not miss the point. Horns and oboes later join with an expanded repetition. A lyrical second theme is sung by the violins. The very small development (approximately thirty measures) follows before a standard, literal recapitulation with a coda finishes the movement.

An elegant Andante concerns itself with a delicate theme spun by muted violins. Edward Downs commented, “It is full of eighteenth century clichés and turns that were used a hundred times before and after by other composers, but here they are so spontaneous and lovely that each phrase bears repeating and repeating. And still the movement seems too short.” The form is tri-partite with the opening theme returning in the last part with increased violin embroidery.

The third movement is a minuet. However, Mozart now moves to a slightly more aggressive style than polite convention would have expected. Neal Zaslaw has astutely characterized the music as more symphonic than dancelike.

The fourth movement recalls the first theme of the

first movement with its distinctive octave-drop profile.

Another theme is typically galant, filled with decorative trills and grace notes. Mozart creates an informal fun-loving atmosphere (complete with hunting calls), spending more time on the development than in the first movement, thereby adding more weight to this final section. Overall, the music remains elegant and cheerful until the close.

A symphonic silence after Symphony 29 led to a significant change when Mozart returned to the genre: a much broader canvas, scope and emotion would infuse the later works. Symphony No. 29 summarized a world and a style which was young and fresh, but not quite different from the maturity and content of Mozart’s future style. ©

Aaron King Vaughn

ased in Florida, Aaron King Vaughn is the assistant conductor of Sinfonia Gulf Coast and Music Director for the Sinfonia Youth Orchestras. Notably, Vaughn is also completing his second year as a Chicago Sinfonietta Project Inclusion Freeman Conducting Fellow. Vaughn is a passionate advocate for underrepresented composers, community building, and music education. Over the past year Vaughn has participated in many virtual lectures and masterclasses with Mei-Ann Chen, Marin Alsop, Teddy Abrams, Joann Fallata, Glenn Dictorow, Alex Kerr, and many more. In the summer of 2021 Vaughn competed in the International Lliria City of Music conducting competition and placed in the Semifinals round.

He has been invited to the PRISMA Conducting Fellowship, the International Institute for Conductors, and was an assistant conductor finalist for the National Repertory Orchestra. Vaughn gained extensive experience working with collegiate orchestras while earning his Masters in Orchestral Conducting (2017 - 2019) at The Florida State University College of Music, under the direction of Alexander Jiménez. Working with Youth Orchestras has been a monumental part of Vaughn’s development as he has worked with Tallahassee Youth Orchestras, Sarasota Youth Orchestras, and Sinfonia Youth Orchestras.

Vaughn is also an experienced teacher and held the position of Orchestra Director at Manatee High School from 2015 - 2017. As an active violinist Vaughn has played principal positions with Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, Bradenton Symphony Orchestra, Panama City Symphony Orchestra, and Sinfonia Gulf Coast. He uses a process that combines both pen and ink, plus digital illustration to make his unique and stylized works of art. Inspired by artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Yoshitaka Amano, and Erte- Lindblad works to create intricate images that engage the viewer into style and detail. The year is 1936, and professor of archeology and “obtainer of rare antiquities” Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is tasked by U.S. Army Intelligence to recover the legendary Ark of the Covenant before it falls into the hands of the Nazis. Indy’s quest takes him to Nepal and Egypt, reuniting him with an old friend (John Rhys-Davies), an old foe (Paul Freeman), and an ex-flame (Karen Allen) who falls somewhere in between. A NOTE FROM THE COMPOSER In creating the character Indiana Jones, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg introduced an enduring and much loved figure into the pantheon of fictional movie heroes. Raiders of the Lost Ark was illuminated by the superb comedyaction performance of Harrison Ford and enlivened by the spirited direction of Steven Spielberg.

Speaking for myself, I must say that the experience of composing the music for this film, and for the subsequent installments in the series, was a very happy one, and offered me a wild and truly joyous ride.

I’m especially delighted that the magnificent Sinfonia Gulf Coast has agreed to perform the music this evening in a live presentation of the movie.

I know I speak for everyone connected with the making of the Raiders in saying that we are greatly honored by this event… and I hope that tonight’s audience will experience some measure of the joy and fun we did when making the film nearly thirty-five years ago.

John Williams n a career spanning more than five decades, John Williams has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and for the concert stage, and he remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices. He has composed the music for more than one hundred films, including all nine Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, Memoirs of a Geisha, Home Alone and The Book Thief. His 45-year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Saving Private Ryan, Lincoln, The BFG and The Post. Mr. Williams has composed themes for four Olympic Games. He served as music director of the Boston Pops Orchestra for fourteen seasons and remains their Laureate Conductor. He has composed numerous works for the concert stage including two symphonies, and concertos commissioned by many of America’s most

Mr. Williams has received five Academy Awards and 52 Oscar nominations (making him the second-most nominated person in the history of the Oscars), seven British Academy Awards, twenty-five Grammys, four Golden Globes, and five Emmys. In 2003, he received the Olympic Order (the IOC’s highest honor) for his contributions to the Olympic movement. In 2004, he received the Kennedy Center Honors, and in 2009 he received the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists by the U.S. Government. In 2016 he received the 44th Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute – the first time a composer was honored with this award.
